Wish you all a Happy andProsperous Deepawali

Greetings to all! Hope you all had a very good Dasara festival celebrations.

Based on the feedback received from members and non membersupporters, Janaranjani 2009 program was well received by people whoattended the function. As you may have known, we also produced a videoof the function and the first batch of DVD copies printed, have all beensold out within a couple of days. Due to better than expected gatereceipts, our business sponsors and member donors, we have come outwell ahead of our budget projections for Janaranjani function. This is avery pleasing outcome from your committees perspective.

The membership of our association has increased this year and yourcommittee is in the process of compiling the membership lists of both lifeand annual members. Maintaining an accurate list of all financial membersof the organisation at all times is a requirement of AssociationsIncorporation Act of Victoria. We plan to have these membership lists inan auditable form in the near future.

As you are aware, your TAAI committee is working on plans to implementa new TAAI website in year 2010. There is a good amount of planning thatis taking place currently to enable us to move forward on this activity. Ihope to write to you soon to give you some detail on how we go about

    undertaking this fairly challenging task.

I am pleased to share with you all that TAAI has received a sum of $1500.00as grant from National Australia Bank (NAB). Our sincere thanks toRamakrishna Raju Indukuri for all his efforts in obtaining the amount underthe Employee Community Grant.

    Cheers!

xqssLi Page 7 of 34Janaran ani A reviewTAAI has celebrated its winter function Janaranjani at the Renaissance theatre, Kew,Victoria, on 6th September 2009 with the fullest vigour shown by the committeemembers along with the highest member family participation from our community which

has not been seen the past 5 to 6 years. Full credit must go to the committee membersfor their untiring efforts in bringing the community together and making the function agrand success. The large attendance and overwhelming response to this function fromalmost all suburbs in Melbourne is a proper endorsement to the programmes undertakenby the committee. It is unfortunate that some of our community members have missedout in securing entry tickets to this programme even after stretching seating of thetheatre much beyond its capacity.

The program consisted of nearly 13 production items, 10 karaoke songs, a few wordsfrom TAAI committee members and programme sponsors and of course, an address bythe guest of honour Mr. George Lekasis, Chairperson of the Victorian MulticulturalCommission. The programme had started on time at 2 PM and finished at 7.15 PM asscheduled.

The program opened with a classical dance for the song Maa Telugu TallikiMallepoodanda, a befitting tribute to our Telugu Talli. Following that one group of theyoungest participants in the programme brought our Indian festivals into the theatrewith their appropriate costumes, cheerful smiles and background music of SheikMoulana Sahibs Nadaswaram. Another young group paraded in fancy dresses.

The program consistedof nearly 13 production

items, 10 karaoke songs,a few words from TAAI

    committee members andprogramme sponsors and

of course, an address bythe guest of honour Mr.

    George Lekasis,Chairperson of the

    Victorian MulticulturalCommission.

This years Janaranjani function was dominated by a number of dance items where theparticipation was from very young, the youths, to the adults. The Dhim Ta Dare, amusical dance performance by young girls and boys in aqua blue colour uniform, hadattracted the attention of audience with their rhythmic steps. The dance for the songNachave Nizam Pori was performed very well by energetic young boys and girls from

the western suburbs. Another group of young boys from south-eastern suburbs havedone the Lets do it dance with a lot of formations and fast paced steps. Similarly alarge group of young girls performed a simple but very effective graceful dance forChudarandamma song describing young Krishna leelalu; the girls brought richness tothe stage with their traditional long silk skirts in vibrant colours. Another group of youngearly teenage girls performed a dance with quick moves on I want to swing like a birdwhich is a mix of a few film songs, choreographed by themselves. The Bangarukodipettalu Mix 1 and 2 were well articulated productions with a combination of filmsong bits performed by a group of young ladies. The dances were well supported bygraceful, rhythmic, and synchronised moves which entertained the crowd very well.

Members of the Telugu Ladies club group presented a nice piece of Kolatamproduction mixing the classical and folk steps in colourful costumes.

The largest group performance item (about 32 participants) in Janaranjani was theMillennium Medleys - A collection of old film song bits to new ones representingdifferent decades from 1950s to 2000; the dances were performed sequentially and inquick succession by group of adults and youth. This piece of production had completelystolen the show and flabbergasted the audience, inviting them to guess the next song.

The karaoke songs were slotted in between the production items and well-received bythe audience. The MCs did their job well to up-keep the tempo and entertained theaudience with some subtle jokes. It was a good gesture on Indya foods to providerefreshments during the half way break of the programme and Amba bazaar to providesome take away free-bees.

Over all, the packed audience had immensely enjoyed the programme and will be sureto remember that good evening for a good while.

    Rama Rao Munuganti

xqssLi Page 22 of 34 - Science and Spirituality

The Mind of a Mystic Sri. Nithyananda Swami is a trim, healthy looking young man with dark,shoulder-length hair. Handsome and polite, possessing an open manner and a wealth ofcuriosity, he could be any ordinary American college student. The difference is thatordinary American college students do not wear orange robes and turbans, have notexperienced spiritual enlightenment and are not regarded as a teacher, healer and mysticby millions of people in all corners of the world.

A mystic? The term is not a bad fit for Swami, as he is known. Mystics, popular culturetells us, have direct communion with God. Through means not understood or measurable, mystics are thought to have access to ultimate realities or truths. Picture a mystic andyoull probably picture someone full of bliss, someone gifted with lofty thoughts andinsights the rest of us do not possess. The very presence of a mystic is thought to bringpeace and healing to others.

Thats an apt description of Swami, a 27-year-old from South India. He is approached bythousands of people a year seeking relief from diseases and ailments that conventionalmedical approaches have not cured. Swamis background lends him the air of a mystic, too.He left his home as a teen, visited ashrams across India, immersed himself in philosophy, read extensively and mastered the art of meditation.

When Swami passed through Oklahoma City recently as one stop in his world travels, I askedhim if he would let me use some of modern medicines newest technology to peer into hisbrain while he meditated. My goal: to understand, measure and demystify what happensduring the mystic phenomena. Swami, who believes that meditation has a scientific basis, happily agreed.

The procedures Swami went through were administered by some of Oklahoma Citys finest

and most experienced physicians, Neuro psychologists and researchers: Drs. Fordyce, Ruweand Higgins of the Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Centre Neuropsychology Department and Dr.Chacko of the PET Centre of Oklahoma. These doctors were using technology they use withpatients on a routine basis. When they look at images obtained by their technology, theyknow whats normal and whats not.

The results from testing Swami? Decidedly not normal.

    Imaging Brain Activity

Our first look into Swamis brain was achieved with the help of a Positron EmissionTomography (PET) device. Unlike traditional diagnostic techniques that produce images ofthe bodys structure or anatomy, such as X-rays, CT scans or MRI, PET produces images ofthe function of the brain through the metabolic activity of cells. An analog of glucose is

attached to a radioactive PET tracer. The PET scanner then images the metabolically activebrain areas at any given time.

In the case of Swami, the drug was intended to identify highly active areas of the brain inan alert and conscious state, in the early stages of meditation and during deep meditation.

The results of the PET scan tests were stunning. To begin with, the activity in the frontallobes of Swamis brain were significantly heightened, even in early meditation stages. Thelevel of activity was higher than would be seen in the average human brain under anyconditions. The frontal lobes are associated with the functions of intelligence, attention, wisdom and judgement.

When we then asked Swami to go into the deepest meditation state, there were two moreremarkable findings.

First, the dominant hemisphere of Swamis brain was more than 90 percent shut down. Itwas as if Swamis brain had packed up and gone on vacation. It was quiet and still, completely at peace and Swami had made it so at will.

A second amazing aspect of Swamis deep meditation was that the lower portion of his

  • 8/14/2019 Sravanti Sept 2009

    23/34

xqssLi Page 23 of 34mesial frontal areas lighted up in a very significant way. This area roughly correspondsto the reputed location of the mystical Third Eye.

Associated with both cosmic and inner knowledge and thought to be a place of clarityand peace, the Third Eye is considered by many to be the seat of the soul. Were weseeing an indication that deep meditation can open an area of the brain responsible for

communicating with the divine, looking deep into the mysteries of self or creation? Ibelieve the PET scan revealed what I call the brains D-spot. Whether you considerthe D in D-spot to stand for delight, the divine or even dopamine, the chemicalthrough which our bodies experience pleasure, initial indications are that meditationcan stimulate it.

    Measuring Brainwaves

The second procedure we used to look into Swamis brain is known as QuantitativeElectroencephalography, or QEEG. QEEG measures electrical patterns in the brain, patternscommonly referred to as brainwaves.

There are four bandwidths of brainwaves, each different in speed and each associated with

a different state of mind. For instance, beta brainwaves are small and fast and linked withan awake, alert state of mind. Alpha brainwaves are slower and larger and are connected tofeelings of well-being. Theta waves represent a state of consciousness between that is closeto sleep, a stage in which there is a sense of calmness and serenity without active thought.

In a days time, most people will experience all four types of brainwaves. Theprogression from one bandwidth to another, though, is not so easily in their control. From Swamis QEEG, though, we can see that he has complete control over hisbrainwaves. When in deep meditation, his brain smoothly shifted from one state toanother, like a talented pianist playing the scales. There was no hesitation and noretreating, just continuous, fluid shifts from one type of brainwave to the next. Becausethe QEEG represents the five brainwave bandwidths as colours, it was as we werewatching Swami float from colour to colour within a rainbow.

    As brain researchcontinues on a

    widespread basis, andas we appropriately

    bring the phenomena of

mysticism into therealm of science forfurther study, we are

taking strides on a pathof hope and health

ConclusionsThe brain is the bodys most complex organ, containing more than 100 billion neurons, each of them in chemical and electrical conversation with up to 10,000 other neurons. Its sheer capacity to process information is astonishing.

Are there techniques we can learn and teach that will bring balance and peace intopeoples lives?

Can we invoke a healing response or accelerate healing through specific training? Canwe learn techniques that will allow us to control pain or alter the course of a disease?

Can we learn to activate what I call our D-spot, thus putting us in instant connection todelight or the divine?

The results from our study of Swami are new pages in our worlds growing book ofresearch on the brain. There continue to be indications that the human mind may beable to choose to heal the body. Were now looking at the possibility of people learningand acquiring these healing capabilities, an event of immense benefit for humankind. The potential for altering the rates and progression of many diseases heart disease, cancer, arthritis, alcoholism and many others is beginning to look achievable.

Swami is a bridge between the invisible, ancient world of mysticism and the modern, visible world of science and discovery. As brain research continues on a widespreadbasis, and as we appropriately bring the phenomena of mysticism into the realm ofscience for further study, we are taking strides on a path of hope and health.

The 20t of July 2009 marked the 40t anniversary of the firstmanned moon landing. The launch was manned by threeastronauts: Neil Armstrong as commander, Michael Collins as

command module Pilot and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. as lunar modulepilot. The space craft they manned was named Apollo 11. Thelunar module was named Eagle as it was the national bird of theUnited States. The command module was named Columbia fromthe traditional name of the United States in songs or poetry.

The launch occurred on the 16 of July 1969 at 13:32. Peoplecrowded highways and beaches close to the launch sight andmillions also watched on T.V as the Apollo 11 mission began. The spacecraft (shown on right) went into the orbit of the Earth12 minutes after the launch and then completed one and a halforbits. The craft then pushed itself out of Earths orbit andtowards the moon.

they realized thatthey were passinglandmarks on the

surface four secondsbefore they weresupposed to

On the 19th of July Apollo 11 entered into a lunar orbit aroundthe moon. The spacecraft completed thirty one orbits. Whilethis was happening, the crew observed their proposed landing spot: the southern Sea ofTranquility. This spot was chosen as it was relatively flat and smooth.

thThe lunar module (shown below) separated itself from the command module on the 20 ofJuly. Collins was left on the command module as Armstrong and Aldrin both flew towardsthe moon in the lunar module. As the men descended on the moon they realized that theywere passing landmarks on the surface four seconds before they were supposed to.Armstrong looked at computers landing target and saw that the lunar module would land

in a boulder strewn area. Armstrong took semi-automatic

control of the module and Aldrin called out altitude and velocitydata. The two men landed the module safely at 20:17 on the20th of July.

The two men then began to prepare to go onto the moonsurface. At 2:56 on July the 21st Armstrong made his descent onthe moons surface and spoke his famous line, Thats one smallstep for man, and one giant leap for mankind. Aldrin joinedhim and described the view as Magnificent Desolation. Theastronauts planted the United States flag on the moons surface.

Aldrin and Armstrong returned to the lunar module with film and two sample boxes of lunarsurface material. The Astronauts had a well earned seven hours of sleep knowing that they

had been the first humans to set foot on the moon. At 17:54 they lifted off and rejoinedCollins on the command module.

rdThe Astronauts made a television broadcast on the 23 of July. They then returned to Earthon the 24th of July.

The World grandly celebrated the 40 year anniversary. This mission has brought inspirationto many children and has given a greater insight of the moon. Moon landing is mankindsgreatest achievement.

    Sports Roundup

Once again we are at the end of another footy season and this year Geelong has wonanother grand final again with its opponent being St Kilda. This is 3rd time lucky for the Catsand a disappointing way to finish a year in which they dominated out rightly for the Saints. In cricket we have the Champions Trophy and the T20 Champions League to look forward to.In Formula1 there are only a few races to go and there are many more sports that will bestarting their seasons soon.

Geelong has beaten Saint Kilda 80 to 68 in one of the most thrilling grand finals of all time. The game was very evenly matched and was only decided in the last 4 minutes with PaulChapman capping off an excellent game with a snap over his head to goal and give the Catsthe lead. The Saints were unable to goal after this and a point from Max Rooke of Geelongsealed the deal as Saint Kilda could not have won from there. Paul Chapman was awardedthe Norm Smith Medal for best player on ground after his 26 disposals and 3 goals were whatswung the game for Geelong. Hopefully the Saints will come back next year and end theirrun of horrid luck. For Geelong; 2 out of 3 is a lot better looking than 1 out of 3.

Now we must look forward to the transfers that will happen during the off season. Who willchange clubs and who will be dropped? Next year is set to look very different with a wholehost of senior players exiting the game this year. Shaun Burgoyne and Josh Gibson havealready stated that they wish to join Hawthorn. With the return of key players from longterm injuries, the Hawks will once again be a formidable force next year after this yearsdisastrous season. Clubs with new coaches such as North Melbourne and Richmond have

  • 8/14/2019 Sravanti Sept 2009

    27/34

xqssLi Page 27 of 34already cut the team lists down with many players dropped. Richmond has not renewed thecontracts of 10 of its players meaning they will also have to find new clubs. Whateverhappens this transfer season is set to be a very interesting one.

In the cricket, Australia has beaten England in their 7 match series 6-1. If they had won the

last match, they would have retained their ranking as the number 1 team in the world butwith this lost have dropped down to 3rd nd. After their 2 straight Ashes loss in England,Australia has lost the mantle as the best team in the world. That now belongs to SouthAfrica with India very close behind them. Experts are predicting a South African win in theupcoming Champions Trophy for One-day Internationals. They are after all in great form andare playing at home. Australia, India and Sri-Lanka are also in the running. The big talkingpoint of the cricket world right now is the upcoming T20 champions League to be played bythe best 2 teams from T20 leagues all around the world. The IPL, Australia and South Africawill be represented by 2 teams while England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand will berepresented by 1. The prize money for this tournament is in excess of $4 Million.

For Formula One, the season is almost finished and with only a few races to go JensonButton and Rubens Barrichello have had dream seasons with their Brawn team as they now

head a Brawn 1-2 list. Button is leading the driver standings with 80 pts while Barrichello is2nd rdwith 66. Red Bull Racing claims the next 2 sports with Sebastian Vettel 3 and MarkWebber 4th. In an unusual season in which none of the racing giants have a driver in the top4; it may come down to the line with Button fading and Vettel and Barrichello closing fast. The stand off between the governing body and the drivers seem to have subsided witheveryone set to participate in next years championship. An agreement between the two isvital if the sport wants to continue in the future.

Looking over to America, NBA is soon to start. After last years heroics and subsequentdefeat, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers will be looking forward to making up forlast years fall at the final hurdle. The Los Angeles Lakers are looking to back up their winlast year and Orlando will be looking to add to its grand total of 1 NBA championships afterlast years disappointing finals series.

In the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals will be looking to back up lastseasons efforts in which both teams made the Grand Final. Other teams such as New YorkGiants and New England Patriots will be aiming to live up to the exceptionally highstandards set by their dominance of previous years.

In short, once again we are looking at a summer full of sports from all corners of the globe.Luckily, we can watch most of this sport on One HD or Foxtel (if you have it).

How to clean smelly shoes caused by smelly feet? Our feet contain hundreds of thousands of sweat glands and sweat is nothing but saltand water. So what causes the smell? The smell is actually caused by bacteria thatfeed on sweat and grow in dark, warm, and moist places (eg shoes).Preventing is not always easy but by following few steps we can keep it undercheck.

Wash your feet more than one time a day and dry them thoroughly with atowel.

Wear only cotton socks because they absorb moisture better. Go barefoot and let your feet air-out as much as possible Put some tea leaves into a pair of stockings and stuff each into a shoe. Leave

for a day or two and the smell just vanishes. You can recycle the tea leavesa number of times. Tea has antibacterial properties and helps kill bacteria.

I tried this at home and it works - Soak your feet in tea decoction for 15 minuteseach day for a week. The tannic acid in the tea dries out your foot and helps reducethe amount of sweat and odour. You ma have to re eat this after few months.
