Apple Fest Entertainment!Last Pitch of the Climb

Performances at random in the park Saturday & Sunday Look for them under the gazebo.

Last Pitch of the Climb is a musi-cal performance ensemble which grew out of a class offered at Summit Charter Collegiate Academy. Now 7 years ago the original group began to do perfor-mances built around a theme of wilder-ness areas, endangered species and his-torical places. Along with their original song the group performs Blues, Country Western and Old Cowboy selections.

Over the past 7 years the group has performed over 400 shows includ-ing major concerts at the Lone Pine Film History Museum, Death Valley, Sequoia National Park and River Park ‘Music on the Mall’ in Fresno. The group performed about 50 shows per year including school assemblies, retire-ment homes, County Fairs, Food Fests and City Park Music Festivals.

Over the years the group has done 4 major CD Albums, 7 Music Videos and numerous single CD’s.

Pies & tarts made by Springville Women’s Club are just part of the yummy apple treats created every year for the Springville Apple Festival.

Apple pies and apple tarts are homemade and sold at our booth in the Springville Park close to the gazebo. The pies and tarts are made, baked, and sold by the members of our club. This is one of two fund raisers we have for our club. The second being our food booth at the rodeo each year on the last weekend in April. Our club uses our funds raised by these two fund raisers to support the youth of our local community. We help out with different projects, field trips, and scholarships at Springville Uni-fied School. We have supported Springville Little League in the past. We sponsor an annual Easter Egg Hunt, and co-sponsor a Christmas Party with the Springville Lions Club. We give college scholarships to two (2) graduation high school students, that at-tended Springville School sometime between K - 8th grade. We have funded Springville School’s “Character Counts” program for the past few years. We host a “Staff Appreciation” luncheon each March for the staff at Springville School. Every December we donate to the Porterville Developmental Center for them to pur-chase Christmas gifts for their clients. Along with all of the above mentioned sponsorships, we meet the third (3rd) Tuesday of each month and have a lot of fun meetings from our annual soup sup-per meeting in January, a Valentine gift exchange in February, appreciation dinner in either May or June, to a field trip to Balch Park Pack Station every July. We top the year off with a Christ-mas Dinner and gift exchange every December. Any women living in the Springville area is welcome to join us and expect to experi-ence good fellowship, eats, and FUN, FUN, FUN!!! Contact the Springville Women’s Club, P.O. Box 541, Springville

Apple Burrito ‘s VFW Post 9499

In the early 1990’s (1991-92) at a Springville VFW Post 9499 meeting, it was discussed that the Post did not have an apple related product to connect them to Springville’s Ap-ple Festival. The Post participated up to that point with portable snow-cone and popcorn machines in which fifty-cents got you a VFW product to enjoy. Members Perry Pattersen, Walt Braddy and Don Smith gathered at Don’s home to discuss and develop a quality apple product worthy of the festival.

Don vaguely had something in mind and had materials of different types to experi-ment with and to test. The goal was to pro-duce something that had good presentation and taste, while providing a method for it to be made and sold with a volunteer (VFW) staff. The end result from this product re-search session was the apple burrito.

The first year the apple burrito was introduced at the Apple Festival re-sulted in a lot of the product being consumed by VFW members because it went unsold. Input from Post mem-bers began to fine tune the now “Famous VFW Apple Burritos” recipe. Even the name was a process that was researched and developed and the original name has been lost in memory.

The “Famous VFW Apple Burrito” is now a very successful product and represents the Post’s biggest fund raiser. The Post mandate is to support Veterans, Widows of Veterans and Children of Veterans. The Springville

VFW Post 9499 does that by funding a Porterville Commu-nity College endow-ment for qualified Veterans, donating to the Veterans home, disaster relief when needed, and the VFW blood donation ac-count. The Post also

supports local schools with the VFW National Essay Contest and scholarship monies to the graduation class at Springville School. They continue to look for ways to benefit Veterans and our local community.

The Post is small in numbers, but big in community goals.

A Long Tradtion of Volunteering

Porterville Scout Troop 132 has gained some new recruits since last year and their role at the Apple Festival has expanded as well. “Look for the boys in the lime green shirts.” Per Matt Moore, Scout Master, “the shirts are the color of smashed grass-hoppers!” If that doesn’t paint a picture what will? Matt and Committee Chair, Rick Dunn, supervise a troop of 21 boys ranging in age from 11 to 18. You will find them scattered from the Rodeo Grounds to Se-quoia Dawn, keeping the food courts clean and stocking the cleaning stations and portable restrooms. The boys are working hard to raise money to attend a Youth

Leadership Conference and past camping trips included the Florida Sea Base High Ad-venture Campout. Of course I asked “what’s a High Adventure Campout?” In the Florida trip, participants are dropped off on an island with “limited food” and must fill in for the 7 days they are there. In other trips, the scouts have canoed from Eli, Montana into Canada and climbed Mt. Whitney. It seems scouting of-fers a lot of challenges and a chance to see quite a bit of this country. Don’t miss Scout Troop 132’s Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, the day before the Veterans’ Pa-rade in Porterville. For more in-formation about scouting, give Matt a call at 559-539-3000.

9Springville Apple Festival 2013

The Springville Boy Scout Troop #137 is proud to partici-pate in the Springville Apple Festival year after year. Their booth is located in the Spring-ville Memorial Park right next to the Springville Mountain Lions Booth. According to Scoutmas-ter, Dave Matthews, the “Troop” sells; caramel apples, all soda flavors, water, Gatorade and cot-ton candy in their booth.

The Springville Boy Scout Troop #137 is a small but very active troop. This year, the “troop” has four Boy Scouts that are seniors in high school and have just completed all of their scouting requirements to become Eagle Scouts including their Eagle Scout projects. These four young men became official

Eagle Scouts during the month of September of this year.

The “Troop” is pleased with the projects that they have been able to complete so far for this year, namely; a complete exteri-or restoration to the Springville Church of the Nazarene, located directly across the street from Springville Union School. They repaired the stucco and repaint-ed the entire church building which also included the sanding and repainting of their church signs. In additional, they put in a handicapped sidewalk to assist the disabled. Another project the “Troop” did this year was restor-ing all the picnic benches in the Balch Park campground which is located in the Sequoia Nation-al Forest just above Springville.

This included welding, wood re-placement, sanding and repaint-ing of approximately 35 tables. And finally, the “Troop” com-pleted a pit BBQ made of river rock with a huge crank up grill

located on the grounds of Lake Success which is 8 miles east of Porterville traveling along scenic Highway 190 towards the little town of Springville.

pating in the Springville Apple Festival since its inception in 1980, and has been in the same location as it is at this Festival, in the Springville Memorial Park.

Lions’ club members serve up their annual traditional break-fast starting at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday of the Fes-tival. The breakfast menu con-sists of pancakes, sausage along with applesauce and a beverage. Guests enjoy eating their break-fast while visiting with family, friends, neighbors and new ac-quaintances in the food court also located in the Springville Memorial Park.

Lunch preparations begin around 10:30 a.m. on both Sat-urday and Sunday. The Lions’ lunch menu offers two choices; their famous barbequed tri-tip cole slaw burritos, served with chili beans and corn on the cob or their barbequed chicken wings served with chili beans and corn on the cob.

Maintaining a booth year after year at the Springville Apple Fes-tival helps the Springville Moun-tain Lions raise additional funds to invest back in to our commu-nity by supporting local youth activities such as school events, boys and girls scout troops and add-ons for Springville youth at the Porterville Fair, plus scholar-ships for local Springville youth graduates.

The Springville Mountain Lions Club expresses their gratitude to all the attendees of the Spring-ville Apple Festival who help in their fund-raising efforts by hav-ing their breakfast and lunch meals at their booth year after year.

Welcome and enjoy this year’s Springville Apple Festival.

Springville’s Patton House serves as headquarters for the Springville Community Club, sponsors of the Springville Apple Festival.

The Patton House Gift & Thrift Shop is the little jewel of Spring-ville. The house was built in the late 19th century for Alonso and Annette Belle Patton whose pic-tures are found over the archway when you enter the door. It was later acquired by others who first rented it and eventually sold it to the Springville Community Club in the late 1970’s. Under the Club’s ownership, the Patton House has served the community for more than three decades as a gift and thrift shop with proceeds return-ing to the community in the form of scholarships, sponsorships, and other monetary donations.

The Patton House Gift & Thrift Shop receives donated items of clothing, small appliances, kitchen items, bedding, linens, and home décor which are sold at amazingly low prices. “We are our own best customers” is a sentiment nearly every volunteer cashier has shared over the years. The shop is staffed entirely by volunteers from the Community Club.

In the gift shop, visitors can buy unique homemade knitted items like baby cowboy boots, afghans, aprons, little girls’ dresses and sweaters, handmade purses and other items. The store is a wonder-ful way for local crafters to market their creations. The Patton House also features locally produced foods like Armstrong Olives, Eagle Olive Oil, BeeKeepers Daughter local honey, apple jams, jellies, syrups and granola and assorted nuts. It also boasts a wide selection of greet-ing cards and you will find soaps, lotions, knick knacks, yard art, and the list goes on.

Stop by anytime. The Patton House is open 363 days a year, clos-ing only on Christmas and Thanks-giving. Hours are from 10 AM to 4PM and the phone number is 559-539-3993.

Concerts in the Park History The Springville Concerts in the Park was the brainchild of Dot-tie Hammond, a member of the Springville Apple Festival Commit-tee. During one of the Apple Festival Committee meetings,in the begin-ning of 2000, Dottie convinced the Committee to put together a series of concerts for the community to en-joy. Dottie was willing to arrange for several groups of musical entertain-ers to come to the park and play for the enjoyment of the community, the Committee agreed and SPRING-VILLE CONCERTS IN THE PARK began.

During the first year of Concerts in the Park, Dottie and her fam-ily moved to the Coast due to Dot-tie’s health. There was a need for a spokesperson to cover the remain-ing concerts, Phyllis Taylor stepped

up to the challenge and has been the Concerts organizer and hostess ever since.

In the spirit of true community

involvement the Springville Apple Festival Committee was willing to fund the expense of the bands with the Springville Community Club sponsoring the Concerts by covering the insurance needs of the venture. It was felt that these two groups would be showing their apprecia-tion to the community for all it has done to support them. This was a

trial venture that has continued for 15 years!!!!

Typically the Concert series runs every other Friday evening from the last Friday evening in May to the first Friday in September. A series of eight concerts every year. The Concerts run from 7:00 until 9:00 in the evening. The Concerts are FREE to attend. Donations are ac-cepted to help with the cost of the event. Attendees are encouraged to bring a comfortable chair or blanket and enjoy the music.

On several occasions local groups in Springville surprise such as; the Springville Fire Department passes out free popcorn, and the Spring-ville Church of the Nazarene has on many a concert night served free ice cream and root beer floats to the public.

The Springville Chamber of Com-merce supports the Concerts series by providing flyers and posters for the event and also publishes on the back of theProgram the many events scheduled in Springville during the year.

On one particularly hot summer night (about 110 degrees) it was felt that the Concert needed to be can-celled but Springville would not let that happen. They showed up any-way. The Springville Inn stepped up and offered to let us have the concert in their patio where misters were able to keep the band more comfort-able, and there was even dancing in the parking lot of the Springville Inn!!!!. Concerts has never tried to cancel another event-Springville LOVES their Concerts

Cub Scout Pack 137Sponsored by the Springville Mountain Lions, Scout Pack 137 has been active in Springville for over 50 years. The pack is run by volunteers, including parents of current and former scouts. The new Cubmaster, Elijah Youssefi, is a former scout

himself, and brings enthusiasm and new skills to the pack. Cub Scout Pack 137 provides many exciting opportunities and experiences for its young members, who range in age from 7 to 12. Throughout the year, the boys work on developing skills in leadership, citizenship, sportsmanship, outdoorsmanship, fitness, and craftsmanship. During the past year, the boys have taken ice skating lessons, watched little league hockey, gone bowling, gone fishing, gone camping with other scouting families, gone on nature hikes, gone to Mcdermont’s Field House, and attended summer

Springville’s Cub Scoutscub scout day camp in Porterville. A central part of the scouts’ mission is to be good citizens, and the boys regularly engage in service projects such as canned food drives, Public Lands Day cleanups, letter-writing to service members, trash cleanup, and beautifying public spaces (such as Springville Park and the Veteran’s Memorial Building grounds). The Apple Festival provides the scouts with an opportunity to earn money to pay for outings, as well as to pay for the badges and belt loops that the scouts proudly wear to signify their achievements. Please come by and visit Cub Scout Pack 137’s booth, where they will be selling sliced Bear Creek Orchard apples with caramel dipping sauce, as well as soft drinks and water. Help our boys earn money so that they can continue to do good works in the community, and have exciting new experiences that help them grow into well-rounded, confident, and responsible citizens!

Christmas in The Park December 6th about 5;00 pm

Springville Volunteer Fire Company The Springville Volunteer Fire Company (SVFC) originated in 1944 with a few local residents who saw a need for fire protection in and around our community.

Today the “Company” has grown to approximately 14 active mem-bers that respond to alarms.

SVFC is not only a fire service,

Each year, in the month of December the residents of Springville gather together in the “Park” while the “Springville Volunteer Fire Company” lights up the evergreen tree usher-ing in the Christmas season. Also during this celebration the “Company” has a Memorial Tree in which residents remem-

they also provide medical services as well. They have a very skilled team of qualified EMT’s that help assist ambulance crews on medical incidents.

On an average, Springville Vol-unteer Fire Company, Station #22, responds to 500-600 calls a year, both fire and EMS. (Emergency Medical Service)

If you are interested in joining the Springville Volunteer Fire Com-pany, stop by Springville’s local fire station any day of the week and the staff there will be glad to answer your questions and put you in con-tact with the proper personnel.

Each year at Apple Festival time, Smokey the Bear visits the Spring-ville Volunteer Fire Company at

the Tulare County Fire Station #22 - Springville where he greets the young and the old and is eager to have his picture taken and gives out red fire hats. In addition, the vol-unteers and staff are ready, willing and able to attend to any medical emergencies that arise during the Festival and preform their normal duties when duty calls.

ber: fallen soldiers, friends, loved ones and past residents with their names being men-tioned and a candle lit on their behalf. During the month of November the “Company” collects food from the commu-nity to distribute to the needy residents of Springville to make their Thanksgiving and Christ-mas celebration a little brighter.

.....Family Town Margaret Blackwell - Family Town

It’s all about the kids ! Family Town has a combination of kids games, bounce house, and mechanical kiddy rides. “Most of the games I created myself” Margaret shared. They are similar to what you might find at a fair: ring toss, dime toss, skee ball, apple toss, and go pick (instead of go fish), and apple darts with soft darts. Unlike fairs, though, every child wins something.

Margaret buys all the prizes and arranges for a company to provide the rides. “I don’t do this for money…the tickets I sell cover some of the cost of prizes.”

Why does she do it? “It’s a fun weekend once everything is set up, and I get positive comments from parents who tell me they appreciate that there is something for the kids.”

There is lot’s of action in “Family Town” including games and kid’s rides!

The Springville Apple Festival is pleased to have the Baby Café with us for a third year. The Baby Café is located at Sequoia Dawn near Family Town and gives nursing moms a quiet, comfortable, private place to care for their infants and overheated, excited toddlers. The Baby Café is sponsored by the Tulare County Breast Feeding Coalition and the LaLeche League. Moms will find fans, changing stations, and comfortable accommodations for breastfeeding infants and caring for toddlers. The Baby Café also provides educational materials on breastfeeding and health issues concerning infants and small children.

15th annual Fat Tire Classic

Beck says “You’re ‘gonna’ LOVE the downhills.” The course runs through the Sequoia Ranch with a “particularly breathtak-ing descent through Dead Cow Gulch named for the perfect intact skeleton of a cow.”

Want some thrills and chills? Just ask last year’s King and Queen of the Hill, Jeremiah Root and Sal Lyon what it’s like. The Fat Tire Classic Mountain Bike Race offers all the thrills you can take plus a kids’ race super-vised by the CHP.

Beck Henry introduced the Fat Tire Classic to the Apple Festival in 1999 and it has become the fea-tured event on Sundays with hun-dreds of participants. The course is a closed 8-mile loop through the scenic Sequoia Ranch Estates paralleling the Tule River.

Fat Tire Classic Director

Beck Henry

There are challenging climbs and “spectacular descents” says Beck. See the photo record on Spring-ville.ca.us – Fat Tire Classic. The race recognizes a number of categories from Expert-Sport to Beginners with bikes of all stripes including what Beck calls “Clydes-dales.” If you have a bike and a helmet and want to get a little exercise Sunday morning, just show up at 8 a.m. on Rio Vista to register. Reg-istration is $40 for adults but is free to kids 11 and under. Kids get trophies, lunch and raffle prizes (including a new bike for a lucky someone!) There are trophies for the adults along with a t-shirt, lunch and raffle prizes. Who will be the King and Queen of the Hill this year? Whoever it is will go home $100 richer. Lots of prizes, fresh air, and excitement – It’s all at the Springville Apple Festival.

Apple Run - Follows Cow Paths Along the Tule River

Alex Reed-KraseRace Director

Alex Reed-Krase is in his third year as the Apple Run Race Di-rector. “It’s a big job and one that requires hard-working, ded-icated volunteers” noted Alex.

Alex is excited about this year’s race. “The Apple Run is rare among 5K & 10K races,” he stat-ed. Most are held on flat ground with few if any elevation changes. “Springville’s Apple Run course follows cow paths, climbs a ma-jor hill, and winds its way along the Tule River.” Besides the 5K & 10K races, there is also a Kid’s Race and a 2-Mile Fast Walk.

The Apple Run has a number of dedicated volunteers. They “do a lot.” Nancy Bruce is one of those volunteers. “She gets the course ready – clearing weeds, marking the course, making and placing course signs for direction, and motivating the runners with fun signs,” Alex said. Rick Mitchell is the Time Keeper, a change from his 15-year stint as the Race Di-rector before Alex. School chil-dren make clay awards. Others help with refreshments, and so on.

What’s Alex’s favorite aspect of the Apple Run? “I like the com-munity service aspect. I always

The Apple Run started in 1981 the same year of the first apple festival.

Springville 4-H Club

The Springville 4-H has been a part of the Springville Apple Festival for many years now. The 4-H members come every year to do community service by keeping the grounds and the tables clean in the park food court. They also have a kettle corn booth that they sell kettle corn out of as a fund raiser for the club, The profits from the booth go directly back into the club for the 4-H members to help pay for State Leader-ship Conference, LCORT (which is a leadership camp), 4-H Camp, project needs, and enrollment. Without the support of our leaders, parents and our community we could not provide all these great op-portunities for the Springville 4-H members! Many Thanks to all of you that make this happen each year!

What is 4-H??? 4-H is more than Livestock… What projects do we offer well here are a few- archery, leather crafts, beef, rocketry, sheep, sewing, shooting sports and many more! So who can join Springville 4-H anyone! If you are 9 years old or in the 4th grade but not yet 19 you can join! Our meetings are at the Springville Memorial Building at 7:00 pm the 2nd Monday of every month, next meeting October 14th, 2013 & November 11th, 2013 Come join us and help celebrate the 100th year anniversary of 4-H! For more information call Don-359-9059, Cheryl-539-5325, Jennifer-539-5023 or Mary-539-1520.

A. B. Graham started a youth program in Clark County, Ohio, in 1902, which is considered the birth of 4-H in the United States. The first club was called “The Tomato Club” or the “Corn Growing Club”. T.A. Erickson of Douglas County, Minnesota, started local agricultural after-school clubs and fairs that same year. Jessie Field Shambaugh developed the clover pin with an H on each leaf in 1910, and by 1912 they were called 4-H clubs.

If you are into “Non Spray Apples” you will find them right here in Springville at our festival & also at the “Farmer’s Market”, and boy are they good!

Edwards OrchardsSpringville, CA

Edwards Orchards began in 1992 when Mack Edwards planted approximately 500 apple trees on the 10 acre property. A peach seed was found several years later and Mack developed the peach tree obtaining a patent for the “Ambrosia peach in 1997. Both apple trees and peach trees grow on the Edwards Orchards property which covers approxi-mately 10 acres located on Upper Rio Vista Drive just above Springville.

Mack began selling not only the fruit at various farmers markets throughout the state but, also growing and selling the bare root trees as a side business. The opera-tion continues to this day, with his family working and picking the fruit for local mar-kets. Mack and his wife Joan remain on the property and supervise operations for their children, grand children and great grand-children.

Fruit at Edwards Orchards includes the Ambrosia peach, Divinity nectarine, Fuji, Mutsu, Gala, Golden delicious, Pink lady and White Astrican apples to name a few. Most of the fruit is either sold at the Spring-ville Farmers Market on Saturday’s from 8 am to 12 pm, or at the Apple Festival. The Springville market located in downtown Springville and has provided a great oppor-tunity for local growers in the area to sell produce and maintain a community atmo-sphere. We pride ourselves on being local and serving the Springville community as best we can. Special Orders can be made by contacting Ralph Edwards at (559) 539-1020 or at [email protected]. Please understand, we only pick our fruit when it is ripe and at its peak.

A familiar apple stand has been in existence in the little village of Springville, namely, Bear Creek Apple Stand, since the late 1970’s. Bear Creek Apple Stand is located on scenic High-way 190, just past “upper” Globe Drive, on the east side of the highway, where the “stand” sells several varieties of apples and one variety of pears.

Bear Creek Apple Stand is a family owned and operated “labor of love” business. Owner Dave “Sonny” Hunt, his wife, Maxine along with their son, son-in-law and other members of their family help manage the orchards and stand. To say that this is a “labor intensive” business is putting it mildly. From sun up to well past sundown, nearly 365 days a year there is always something to be done in the orchards: planting, pruning, thinning, weeding, watering, etc., then there’s the “by hand” harvesting time, and from there, it is off to market, in this case, the market is their Bear Creek Apple Stand.

“Sonny” bought his first apple orchard, east of Springville, on Bear Creek Road in 1967, be-cause of the influence of his friend, Bill Berry who owned and operated the Buckhorn orchard, while he was still working as a rural carrier for

the United States Postal Service (USPS) in Ex-eter. “Sonny” commuted between his two jobs until he retired in 1986 from the USPS and then devoted his full; attention, time and energy to his apple and pear orchards of which he still does to this very day.

Prior to selling from their “stand,” the Hunt’s sold directly from their orchards located on Bear Creek Road. They are not in the “shipping” business as they keep the selling of their pro-duce local and oh how Springvillians love their apples and pears, as do others, because people from out of the area drive for miles just to pur-chase their produce year after year. Many who attend the Springville Apple Festival stop and purchase the Hunt’s apples and pears before ever reaching the Festival or stop by the stand on their way home after the Festival. During the weekend of the Festival, Bear Creek Apple Stand is extremely busy as their little stand is jam packed with customers desiring to buy their apples and pears.

including books for its special col-lections, free books for children, and supplies and refreshments for the year round children’s reading pro-gram. In the past PALS has helped sponsor the library’s anniversary

festivities, supplied speakers for the open houses, sponsored Christmas programs for children and adults, visited Springville School classes to promote reading, and obtained presenters for the children’s six week special summer reading program.

PALS has been a significant part of the Apple Festival since PALS was formed three years ago. The book sale in front of Sequoia

Dawn where the Springville Library is housed is PALS’ most significant source of revenue. Hundreds of hardback books ($1 each), paper-backs (.50) and children’s books (.10) have reached the myriad of visitors to the festival who wish to go home with reading material that might include novels, cookbooks, how-to books, religious materials, arts and crafts and many more.

Pals invites you to drop into it’s spread of books to choose your favorite reading materials.

Hundreds & hundreds of books for your reading pleasure.
