"We are face to face with our destiny and we must meet it with a high and resolute courage. For ours is the life of action; of vigorous performance of duty. Let us live in the harness, striving mightily. Let us run the risk of wearing out, rather than rusting out." Those are the words of Theodore Roosevelt, and they are words that certainly describe your Oregon Historical Society. From the opening of a beautiful new exhibit on the life and legacy of internationally renowned architect Pietro Belluschi to the long-awaited debut of Oregon Voices, our new and innovative permanent exhibit on modern Oregon history to the statewide tour of Joe Wiegand, the nation's leading re-creator of Theodore Roosevelt, the spring and summer of 2012 is certainly a "time of action and vigorous performance of duty." I invite all OHS members to attend our 2012 Annual Meeting, which will be held Saturday, May 12 at 11:30 a.m. at the Oregon Historical Society. You will hear an update on the many accomplishments of the past year and a preview of the exciting year ahead. And, of course, as reported on page 3, you will also hear from America's 26th president! With your continued support, I guarantee that this grand institution, now in its 114th year, will neither rust nor wear out — it will only get better!

Best regards,

Kerry TymchukExecutive Director

An Evening with "The Schonz"Tuesday, June 5, 2012As any true Oregonian knows, on June 5, 1977, the Portland Trail Blazers won their first and only NBA Championship. On the 35th anniversary of that championship, Blazer broadcasting legend Bill Schonely—aka "The Schonz"—will share his memories of that championship year, and of a remarkable broadcasting career that earned him a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Presentation begins at 7 PM. Free for members, $10 for non-members.

Oregon RoadshowThis May, the Oregon Historical Society and Wells Fargo are bringing our 26th president back to Oregon with Teddy Roosevelt’s Oregon Roadshow. Joe Wiegand, famed Teddy Roosevelt impersonator, will travel with Kerry Tymchuk and Wells Fargo History Museum Manager Steve Greenwood to schools and historical societies throughout the state. Teddy will return to Portland on the last day of the roadshow as the guest of honor at the Annual Meeting.

Joe Wiegand has been bringing Teddy to life for years with his unparalleled grasp of history and uncanny resemblance to our 26th president. His depth of knowledge and personal anecdotes about Roosevelt’s life make you feel that you are truly in the presence of the president himself.

Born in Italy, Pietro Belluschi (1899-1994) became known as the most important architect to have lived and worked in Oregon. He is recognized as a prominent contributor to a style known as Pacific Northwest Regionalism as well as for mastering modern design innovations. While his buildings and influence are found throughout the United States, many of his significant works are here in Oregon, including churches, homes, and office buildings. Belluschi was also known and respected as a philosopher, educator, collaborator, advisor, and mentor.

This exhibit shares, for the first time, an overview of Pietro Belluschi’s architectural contributions during his long career. It also features personal mementos from the Belluschi family collection, which illuminates his remarkable life.

The exhibit opens May 17, 2012.

Thursday, June 14, 7 PMAt the First Congregational Church

Acclaimed author, historian, and former Mark O. Hatfield Distinguished Historians Forum speaker, Douglas Brinkley, is making a return trip to Portland to share his latest book, Cronkite. Brinkley presents the definitive, revealing biography of renowned news anchor and American legend Walter Cronkite.

Drawing on letters, diaries, and other artifacts at the recently opened Cronkite Archive, Brinkley brings detail and depth to this very personal portrait. He interviewed nearly two hundred of Cronkite’s closest friends and colleagues. Using their voices to instill dignity and humanity into this study, Brinkley brings to life one of America’s most beloved and trusted public figures.

Suffrage Centennial IssueIn honor of this year's centennial of Oregon woman suffrage, the Oregon Historical Quarterly will publish a special issue on "Women and Citizenship" in Fall 2012. Guest edited by Dr. Kimberly Jensen, the issue will consider the ways women have advocated for full citizenship rights and how they have used those rights both before and after the 1912 victory.

Coming up in this summer's issue of the Oregon Historical Quarterly:The Summer 2012 issue will arrive in mailboxes in June, bringing readers stories ranging from a gruesome effect of the late-nineteenth-century agricultural crisis to the birth (in Astoria, Oregon) of India's first organized movement to overthrow British rule to a white man's lifelong commitment to fighting racism.

Join the 1940 US Census Project! The time has come! The 1940 US Census has finally been released to the public. Now you can find out what your grandparents were doing during a monumental time in history.

But before that can happen, the census has to be indexed—and you can help! The Oregon Historical Society has joined forces with genealogy societies and organizations around the country as part of the 1940 US Census Community Project. The initiative aims to publish a free, online, searchable name index of the census that will offer family history researchers and historians a rich data set for ongoing use.

If you would like to participate and join in indexing the Oregon portion of the 1940 US Census, go to https://the1940census.com/getting-started/ and register to participate with the Oregon Historical Society. You will be asked to download the indexing software, then simply select “Oregon Historical Society” on the profile screen when creating your account.
