Chess CLUB

SPRINGMAN SPRING 2017 Tuesdays 3-4pm

Sponsored by the Springman/Attea PTA.

Come back for another fun filled session of chess! Learn pins, forks, double attacks and checkmating

moves! Learn bughouse (team chess) and play for trophies in the class championship! Everyone can win a trophy if they participate in class. Learn thinking skills that help in school and in sports!

National Chess Champions Gauri and Arjun Manoj are back at Springman for the spring season of

chess club. They are Glenview residents and Glenbrook South High School alumni. They also coach Westbrook School in Glenview who won 1st place in the IL 2nd and 3rd grade State Chess Championship!

Parents: Why chess? Psychologist Howard Gardner says “The ability to anticipate chess moves and their consequences seems closely tied to strong imagery" and that good chess players have good spatial intelligence. He states that spatial intelligence (one of his eight intelligences that children need to develop) is critical for today’s environment because it is the basis of creativity in the working world. Chess will help map your child’s brain for math and science by teaching how to break problems down into steps, solve puzzles and win games! Chess also teaches logic and planning and how to peacefully resolve disputes.

Join us: say YES to creativity!

PARCC Testing April 10-25th

Ahhh, Spring! The sunshines longer, the air feels warmer, the flowers are blooming. All young people’s thoughts turn to…..PARCC testing, of course!! This assessment is the official standardized assessment legally required by the state of Illinois. PARCC results will be used by the state and the district to gauge student learning. The window for administering the evaluations to middle school students is April 10-25th.

At Springman we promote a positive perspective to the assessments. We encourage students to come prepared to do their very best. Please click on the link below for important tips to help your student with preparations for these important testing days.
