SPRING WORLDS 2016

Git R Done Softball travels to St. George, Utah/Mesquite, Nevada ready to strap on our gear and face our collective competition! We face unusual weather as we arrive at our destinations, but fortunately the games were able to be played on a cool, blustery day on Tuesday with improved weather on our last 2 days. Our 60’s Team had great weather and enjoyed the beauty of St George. All of our Teams are pumped and ready to play, looking forward to solid competition which Senior Softball is known for.

Now on to the Games

The Git–R–Done 60’s Thanks to all for a very good tournament! We finished the first day as the #3 seed and was one run short of going into the Sunday championship games. We would like to have gone a little further, but hit well, had gorgeous weather and a lot of fun. Best of all, every team now knows that Git-R-Done comes to play. We had been 1-1 with this team over the last year or so. Gary, Ed and Eddie led the charge with 4 for 4

performances while Jano and Anthony hit a boomer each. Our defense was solid, especially the outfield and Jerry's pitching. Scrap Iron: Lost 10-14 We continued our roll with a 9-0 start. Craig, Dave and Jerry were each 3 for 3. Then inexplicably we shut down our offense and gave the game away. Seeding: Two teams finished 2-0 for the day and became the #1 and #2 seeds. Lots of teams were 1-1, but we earned the #3 slot for the next day. Fierce Fire Arms: Lost 14-22 We scored 12 runs in the first 3 innings with Craig, Dave, Gary, Eddie and Steve pounding out 3 hits each. Then, we shut down the offense again, scoring 2 in the final three innings. We had several defensive miscues that this team capitalized on, but they also hit very well the whole game and earned the win. Texas Thunder: Won 15-14 We were also 1-1 with this team over the last year, so we knew they would be tough. Dave was 4 for 4, and Larry and Ronnie 3 for 3 each. Jano hit a HR, Eddie and Brad hit Triples and Ronnie hit a HR and Triple. Family: Won 23-13 Finally, our offense came alive for the entire game. Gary, Eddie, Ed, Steve and Ronnie had 3 hits each. Gary had a Triple and 6 RBI, Eddie a Double and Triple and Ronnie another HR. Jaxx: Lost 14-15 Jaxx had gone undefeated Friday and was 4-1 overall at this point. They jumped out to a 7-2 lead but we came back with a nickel and then see-sawed the rest of the game. Jano was 4 for 4 with 2 Doubles. Craig, Gary, Dennis and Ronnie each had 3 hits, but Gary had a Triple and HR. We were down by four in seventh but we had the hammer. We had the tying run on base with 1 out and this time, we just didn't come through. Overall: We finished a very respectable 3-3 against 6 different teams. We played well and continue to improve. Thanks again to all. Now, let's get ready for Vegas! At this time, I show the following playing, but as always, let me know ASAP if anything changes, thanks! Anthony (Fri/Sun), Brad (Sat), Craig, Dave?, Dennis, Eddie, Ed, Gary, Jano, Jerry, Larry, Mark, Rob, Ronnie, Steve Ronnie

The Git–R–Done 75’s

We played in some strange weather such as wind with dust and blowing, rain, snow on the surrounding mountains, and very cold. First day saw a high of 43 degrees, day two a high of 47, and finally the last

Page 3: SPRING WORLDS - Git R Done Softballgitrdonesoftball.org/Gazettes/Spring_Worlds_2016.pdfplay. BTW, I won 5 of the 6 coin tosses, lol. Our goal is to hit .600 as a team and we hit .674!

day saw a 39 degree at starting time. Also, the last day the field for the defenders was directly in the sun

which created a safety hazard to those trying to catch the ball. As players we need to hustle and encourage each other to do our best which will lead to wins. Errors happen but can be minimized to insure a different result. Focusing on that moment when you are on defense and knowing what to do with the ball before it is hit can limit the number of errors in a game. Also talking to one another about the next defensive play can keep your attention more focused. These games are not recreational games but at a higher level and more at stake for our team. We are a good team and can win these tournaments. Team highlights: Batting Averages: Gene Dick 0.750 Frank Hollier 0.688 Mike Wiemer 0.667 Curt Whitehead 0.667 Doubles: Rick Semany 3 Dennis Phistry 2 Bill Marsh 2 Triples: Mike Wiemer 2 Lonnie Arnold 1 Homeruns: Dennis Phistry 2 Runs batted-in: Bill Marsh 9 Dennis Phistry 8 Runs scored: Rick Semany 8 Mike Wiemer 7 Dennis Phistry 7 George Beardsley 7 The team’s batting average for six games was 0.594. The average runs scored per game was 11. The average run scored by the opposition per game was 17. Game 1: Magic Stuff 21 vs GRD 9

No runs scored for the first three innings and several errors made in the innings one thru three. Temperature was forty three degrees for a high during the games played on Tuesday.

Game 2: Fairway Ford 21 vs GRD 5 Only five runs scored in the third inning out of seven innings. Rain started in 5th inning to add to our problems. Game 3: Slammers 18 vs GRD 13 Dennis Phistry hit his first homerun of the tournament. Temperature for day was a high of forty seven degrees and we played three games on second day.

Page 4: SPRING WORLDS - Git R Done Softballgitrdonesoftball.org/Gazettes/Spring_Worlds_2016.pdfplay. BTW, I won 5 of the 6 coin tosses, lol. Our goal is to hit .600 as a team and we hit .674!

Game 4: Lighthouse 10 vs GRD 9 Improvement in hitting and defense but gave up three double plays. Game 5: Slammers 18 vs GRD 20 Team hit a whopping 0.655 to gain the win and good defense for five inning, only to see mistakes in the open inning but able to hang on for the win. Dennis hit his second homerun of the tournament. Game 6: Lighthouse 14 vs GRD 10 Conditions were unsafe for the defense with the sun in everyone’s eyes and ice on the field. Game time saw 39 degrees and warmed up slowly to make it bearable. We did not get the results we were hoping for but everyone deserves a round of applause for putting up with the early wake up calls to get to the park. A special thank you to our fans who withstood the harsh weather. We were not expecting winter with snow all around the mountains, wind blowing, rain, and cold weather. Next tournament is Southwest Championships in Las Vegas on April 19-21. See you there! Gene Dick, Manager and Co-Commissioner

The Git–R–Done 65’s We arrived in rainy, blustery, cold weather. Question was . . .Would we be able to play our games on Tuesday? Well, the weather held back it’s “roar” and we got our 2 games in! Vs Scrap Iron Red 70 AAA – Colorado We play a very good 70’s Team. They played solid ball. We on the other hand barely showed up! Despite having batting practice, we obviously left our bats at batting practice. We score a total of 2 runs in our “last” inning. A brutal game, to say the least! Not much to say, we just did not get into the game. We lose 12 to 2 >:) Vs The Zone 70 AAA – Utah We show up to this game winning 13 to 8. We played well on both sides of the “ball”. We hit, we played solid defense. You could say we needed this game badly. The middle of our line-up hitting was just outstanding. Johnny, Jonsey and Donny went 9 for 9! To add more star power, was Artie and Bill R, going 2 for 3 each. These 5 guys drove in 9 of our runs and scored 11 of our runs. When we get the rest of our line-up to play at this level and become consistent in our Offensive game, we will enjoy some Championships. We definitely have ability. So let’s build upon this game. We had 3 1000% batters; congrats to Johnny, Jonsey and Donny. Also 1 batter who had no Average; Dennis: 1 AB’s 1 Walk and 1 Sac! Vs California Oaks 70 AA Cal Oaks is a pretty good AA 70’s Team. However, against us they never got started. Kind of like our 1st game Tuesday morning. We spot them 5 runs, they only score 4 runs against us. We win the game 18 to 9. Nice to see our offense come together. Our goal is to score a minimum 18 runs per game. We finally achieve that goal! We had only 2 errors, so defensively we were on our game. Offensively, we had 27

Page 5: SPRING WORLDS - Git R Done Softballgitrdonesoftball.org/Gazettes/Spring_Worlds_2016.pdfplay. BTW, I won 5 of the 6 coin tosses, lol. Our goal is to hit .600 as a team and we hit .674!

hits, our best Team Offensive performance. We deserved to win and win we did! We had 3 batters

doing the 1000% dance! Top 3 in the line-up; congrats to Fred, Bob C and Ron. They led the way! Vs Last Call 70 AAA – California We play a very good team out of Northern California. We get off to a tough start. Last Call scores a Nickle. Pitching is off kilter and we commit an error. Just a difficult inning. Still we manage to score a nickel on our half inning so 5 to 5 after 1 inning! It turns out to be a spirited game, both Teams playing well. We fade in the end losing the game 20 to 14. Just couldn’t hang. This is where I received an RBI for the other team mistakenly walking in their 5th run! A bonehead play and worthy of a comedy routine! If I didn’t laugh at myself I would have cried. My only saving grace was we didn’t lose by 1 run. Still, despite everything, we stayed in the game! We had 4 1000% perfect B.A.’s. They are Fred, Bob C, Ron and Donny (his 2nd). So again if we can produce this kind of hitting throughout the line-up, guess what? We win! So keep at it guys. Vs The Zone 70 AAA – Utah Back to the Zone. We play The Zone for the 2nd time. Whomever wins this game moves on to Championship Day – Thursday. Getting to the 3rd Day is our 2nd Goal, but must be done to meet our 1st Goal; Winning the Championship. So we take the field against a known competitor, The Zone. Before we begin, JimmyMac asked me to remove him from our line-up, being the Team Player that he is, he just felt not up to playing this game. So with that, we are down to 11 players. We play very well getting key hits at the right time and as a Team we committed only 1 error! We play hard, winning the game 17 to 10! Fred and Ron continue to hit at a 1000% clip. So on we go to Thursday Day 3 . . . The Championship Day! Vs Sons of Pitches 70AAA – California This ends up being our swan song! We played pretty well but lose 17 to 14. Sons of Pitches hit well enough to beat us and although we played well enough defensively to win the game as always, this is a hitters game and we failed to hit enough to get the Victory. Give our competitors credit. They did play solid defense. Our stellar 1000% batters were Bob C, Dennis and Bill R. Ya’ll done good! A tough loss for us, but one we didn’t lose, they just won. Game Wrap-up: Despite our horrible 1st game, our team ended up with the #2 seed. Goes to show that our Team has potential. We overcame adversity and showed pride by our 2nd seed. In addition, several of you asked why we played against 70’s AAA Teams. I felt at this time, we would be more competitive against them rather than against the 65 AAA. Also, we played the 70’s straight-up instead of receiving 5 runs that we would have gotten if we played the 65’s. Of course, the 70’s played with 11 players against our 10 defensive players. This advantage of 11 players, no question, hurt our Offense. So now we all know how it will be when we begin to play in the 70’s Division. It does change the Offensive Game. Offensive Highlights: Bob C: Just an outstanding tourney, leading in B.A. 737 and OBP of .762. Really came through keeping us heading in the right Offensive direction.

Page 6: SPRING WORLDS - Git R Done Softballgitrdonesoftball.org/Gazettes/Spring_Worlds_2016.pdfplay. BTW, I won 5 of the 6 coin tosses, lol. Our goal is to hit .600 as a team and we hit .674!

Fred: At .700 B.A. and .727 OBP. Right up there with Bob. As our lead-off hitter, he did a great job of

getting us going. Ron: Swung the bat like he owned the ball, slamming at a .650 B.A. and .636 OBP. Well Done! Dennis: Also hit for a solid B.A. .667 and .667 OBP. Keeping a healthy offensive contribution to our team. Bill R: Hit very well at .632 on both B.A. and OBP. Pitching and doing the hitting thing! Jonsey: Right there with a B.A. .611. Jonsey led the team with a slugging % of .944. Well Done! Donny: Also at .611 B.A. and .632 OBP. Making a very good offensive contribution. Johnny and Artie: Over .500 B.A. The rest of us will join you Heavy Hitters in The SouthWestern!

The Git–R–Done 70’s We had a good run while it lasted. 11 WINS but unfortunately we just couldn’t get past The California Oaks. Bracketing rounds were great as the following shows; GAME # 1 LAST CALL(AAA) 17 vs GRD 21 Spotted 5 runs & WON by 4. EDDIE was 4 x 4. Jon led the team in RBI’s. Eddie & Bill led in Runs Scored As usual we did our damage in hitting the last two innings scoring TEN runs. COLD COLD COLD………….44 DEGREES AT GAME TIME GAME # 2 SCRAP IRON(AAA) 9 vs GRD 23 We were spotted 5 runs again, but we stayed on our hitting streak by scoring 5 runs in the first 2 innings & then 4 each in the next 2. Donnie, Bill, Eddie, and Mikey were all 3 x 3, Bill led the assault with 5 RBI’s while Donnie & Bill led in Runs Scored. A couple of our old Nemesis from Scrap Iron 65 days were present here but just not the same group or team. We are on a roll and feeling good about our potential to WIN this in the Elimination rounds. GAME # 3 THE ZONE(AAA) 16 vs GRD 24 Another WIN against a Triple A opponent. Yes, we were spotted 5 again, but earned our spot. All eyes are on us as the Team to be in this Division. We are feeling confident as our opponent in the Elimination Round, California Oaks hasn’t won a game yet. We are scheduled to play our FIRST Elimination round shortly. Our hitting is going great, defense is very good, Mikey & Ron led the charge in hitting with a 3 x 3 performance, Jimmy had a HOMER & 5 RBI’s, 7 players in double digits in scoring. Again, we scored 5 runs in each of the first 2 innings & 4 each in the last 2. STILL COLD…………DAMN COLD CHAMPIONSHIP GAME # 1 CALIFORNIA OAKS - 16 / GRD - 15 Not sure where this team came from…….They had not won 1 bracketing game nor had they HIT as they did in this game. 1st. inning we scored 4 as Visitors & they returned with 5. They got ahead in the next 2 innings but then we scored 5 & shut them down to stay TIED by the 5th. W were behind by 1 in the 7th. but just couldn’t ring the bell & lost by 1. Defense was very good on our part but they simply out hit us. We will be back tomorrow. CHAMPIONSHIP GAME # 2 CALIFORNIA OAKS - 18 / GRD - 17

Page 7: SPRING WORLDS - Git R Done Softballgitrdonesoftball.org/Gazettes/Spring_Worlds_2016.pdfplay. BTW, I won 5 of the 6 coin tosses, lol. Our goal is to hit .600 as a team and we hit .674!

READY TO PLAY & HUNGRY FOR A WIN SO WE CAN PLAY THE IF GAME……They WIN the toss so we are Visitors again. First inning they get 5. We keep chipping away & share winning innings so that we, GRD, go into the 7th. inning up by 4. We are feeling VERY confident we can win this game & the IF game, which is next. OUR DEFENSE has been very good with a couple of hiccups. Bottom of the seventh, we are still ahead by TWO, there are TWO outs & men on 2nd.(tying run) & 3rd. All we need is ONE out & the game is ours….. Outfielders are very deep, I had them come in & PLAY NORMAL depth, we intentionally WALK the next batter to LOAD the bases to ensure a FORCE play at all bases. The NEXT batter HAS NOT hit the ball out of the INFIELD all day……….. the second pitch he gets he HITS it 270 feet into Right Center field OVER OUR pulled-in outfield & ALL RUNS score, THUS WE LOST THE GAME AGAIN BY ONE RUN………. Guys, we did try our best but sometimes it ain’t enuff. But it was a good tournament for the team as a whole. We will continue to do well & we will WIN AGAIN. You all are a great group of men & ballplayers. I am proud to know you all & share the field with you. We have the privilege of submitting 4 players names to SSUSA for the ALL tournament team. Please provide me your selections as soon as possible. There were several players whose efforts earned the privilege to be nominated. There is one individual I strongly suggest ALL consider & that is Claude for his OUTSTANDING Pitching throughout the tournament. thanks guys for another great experience. Las Vegas & Southwest Championships next. jer
