When planning a home orchard the size of site, drainage, sun exposure, and types of fruit desired, need to be considered. Start out with a “wish” list of fruit trees and berry bushes that you want, and go from there. When figuring out spacing, always use the mature height and width of the plants in your calculations. This will provide optimum space as your orchard matures.

A site that is well drained with a full sun exposure is ideal for a home orchard. Espalier trees and colonnade trees are very useful for those with limited space. Because espalier apple trees are typically grafted, they can have several types of apples on the same tree making them self-pollinating. Colonnade apple trees grow tall and very narrow. These can be planted in a tight corner, or as columns marking the entrance to your orchard.

Choosing varieties that are self-pollinating (Blackgold Cherry, Peaches, Red Rome Apple, Italian Prune Plum, and Figs) and disease resistant (Contender peach), will also help conserve space and minimize the amount of maintenance needed. Periodically, you will have to spray your trees to mitigate or prevent insect and disease problems. Using products like Bonide Citrus Fruit & Nut Orchard Spray, Bonide Fruit Tree & Plant Guard, and Bonide Bon-Neem will treat a wide variety of insects and diseases.

My pond water looks like pea soup. What can I do?

This question may very well be the most frequently asked question that our pond department receives.

Green pond water is caused by a single celled free floating algae. While there are chemicals such as Algaefix, or a biologic like - Microbial Algae Clean that will provide a quick fix for this problem; ultimately, some of the best long term strategies for this problem include: sitting your pond in an area that will receive at least some shade. Make sure the pond water surface area is covered by at least 60% with pond plants. Watch your fish load. Over stocking the pond leads to excessive fish waste, which in turn leads to green pond water. Lastly, monitor the pond water quality; particularly for elevated levels of Nitrogen and Phosphate as these two are the most problematic. This issue can be easily resolved with frequent partial water changes.

The Importance of Honey Bees Honeybees pollinate one-third of the food that we eat, and a great percentage of the food that livestock eat. They are responsible for $30 Billion in crops every year. Among the crops that are bee pollinated are, almonds, apples, apricots, avocados, blueberries, cantaloupes, cashews, coffee...yes coffee, cranberries, cucumbers, eggplants, grapes, kiwis, mangoes, okra, peaches, pears, peppers, strawberries, tangerines, walnuts, and watermelons. Imagine what life would be like without all of those things and honey.

The Santa CauseYou did it again - Wow! Your generous spirit allowed the “2017 Santa Cause Campaign” to donate $15,131.00 to the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House. This money will supply a bedroom and food for families in need for a year. It will also fund a family room in the Saint Christopher Hospital for the year. From everyone at Feeney’s and the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House we send everyone who participated a warm and grateful thank you!

You too can create a pleasing landscape by following simple strategies of design. First, determine what your wants and needs are. Know your site. Is it sunny or is it shady (be sure to look at it several times a day in order to develop the most accurate profile), dry or wet? Is the soil largely clay based, or is it sandy?

Focus on a focal point and build your landscape around it, such as a sculpture or a unique tree or shrub. Remember to repeat some of the elements in the landscape, whether it is a certain color scheme, shape, texture, or plant combination. This repetition brings continuity to the landscape; thus pulling it all together.

Right plant, right place. Don’t try planting shade loving plants in the sun, or vice versa, or planting a naturally large growing plant, and thinking you can keep it small. This rarely works and it only causes

needless frustration for the gardener. Remember plants grow and plant accordingly. Allow for proper spacing. If you are concerned about the open space between plants, plant some annuals for temporary coverage until your plants mature.

Plant big to small. Large plants in the rear of the landscape followed by smaller shrubs, then perennials, then ground covers. Plant in mass for the greatest visual impact, and always plant in odd numbers as well. 1,3, 5, 7 You get the idea!

Last but not least, remember that developing a landscape takes time, and it is ever evolving. It typically is not a one day, or even a weekend project. Patience is the key. Enjoy your journey.

Spring is here and it’s time to start thinking about your container garden. If you’re looking to create a WOW factor, then a container with a lush colorful combination of thrillers, fillers, and spillers will guarantee to create impact.

Begin the design with the thriller, this is what creates the impact, the centerpiece. Select the tallest, most dramatic plant for your chosen container, this creates the framework for the other plants in the pot. Some of our favorites are banana plants, palms, cannas, elephant ears and fountain grass.

Fillers are just that, they add fullness and mass to the container. They should be half the size of the thriller, create contrast in leaf shape, color and texture. Think about using asparagus fern, coleus, petunias, impatiens, caladiums, coral bells. Just remember to use plants that like the same conditions; sun, shade, part shade and watering needs.

Lastly, the spillers cascading over and softening the pots edges. By placing these around the edge, these plants should have a trailing, vining or a cascading nature. Try sweet potato vine, lysimachia, licorice plant, scaevola or million bells. Your choices are not limited to one type of plant, the selection can range from annuals, tropicals, perennials and even shrubs.

Depending on the flowers you choose, you can create beautiful planters for sun or shade, in whatever color combinations you fancy and to complement any type of container.
