@jccbridgewater

Dear Members and Friends,

Now that we’ve all weathered the storms of winter, I’m thrilled to anticipate the hope and light of spring. At the Birnbaum JCC, we’re busier than ever and springtime will bring with it new and more classes, programs and events to inspire you and your family. Please go through these pages carefully and consider taking a class you’ve never taken, come to an event that will surely enrich you, think about spending time at our swim club this summer, talk to a staff person about how you can get more involved. Remember that in the middle of JCC is COMMUNITY, and you are an important part of this one! Camp Ruach is gearing up for a fabulous summer … if your child’s registration is not in yet, time is running out. And the Blaustein Early Childhood Center is in preparation for a very exciting fall that we’d like your pre-schooler to experience. We’ve bid farewell to Lauren Lippitt, the founding Director of our pre-school and we are welcoming Linda Weiss, a seasoned preschool educator and director, as our new Early Childhood Director. We look forward to new and innovative program developments for our early childhood families. Soon we will offer new full day child care for infants beginning at six weeks of age…stay tuned for details. If you’ve been in the building recently, you’ve seen and heard about Swim & Trim – our capital campaign to improve and expand our aquatics and fitness facilities. Many of our lay leaders are again paving the way with their generosity so that the entire community can benefit. To meet the needs of all of our swimmers all year round, a retractable dome will cover our out-door pool in the winter time and our Fitness Center will expand by another 1800 square feet. Now we need everyone who uses our facilities to step up and take part in this crucial next step in our growth. Every donation helps, and none is too small. I would be happy to answer any of your questions about giving opportunities and dedications --- please contact me at ext. 212 or by email at [email protected]. If you’ve noticed a shiny Nissan Altima at our front entrance, then you know about our annual BIG JCC CAR RAFFLE. This Raffle is a critical component of our annual fundraising for operations. If you are in the position to sell and/or purchase Raffle tickets, we still need your help. Membership dollars alone cannot sustain our operation and support the fine work that we do for vulnerable populations -- the elderly, the disabled, and those in need of financial assistance -- to access the services of the JCC. Please speak to anyone on staff about BIG JCC CAR RAFFLE tickets. The winning tickets will be drawn at our 10th Annual Golf Outing on June 20th. For those of you already registered and/or planning to participate, we look forward to seeing you. If you haven’t yet played in a JCC Outing…we hope you will join us this year for a fantastic day of golf with friends and business colleagues! If you are interested in playing – or if you can help us with a sponsorship or donation – please contact Debbie Golden at ext. 210 or e-mail [email protected]. With Passover quickly approaching, I’d like to close with the themes of this season --- freedom and renewal. For all of us at the JCC, leadership and staff alike, it is a privilege to participate in making the JCC your place to be. Enhanced quality of life, always striving for good health in body, mind and soul, lifelong freedom from day-to-day drudgery and the potential for personal renewal every day - these are the benefits of the Birnbaum JCC.

Pesach (15 Nisan), known as Passover in English, is a major Jewish Spring Festival, commemorating the Exodus from Egypt over 3,000 years ago. The ritual observance of this holiday centers around a special home service called the Seder (meaning “order”) and a festive meal, the prohibition of chametz (leaven), and the eating of matzah (an unleavened bread).

The JCC will be closed on Monday, May 30 for Memorial Day. The Pool Club will be open for Star Members.

The JCC will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, June 8 and 9 for Shavout.

Pool Rules and RegulationsFor everyone’s health and safety, and in order to maintain the cleanliness of the pools and deck areas, please remember the following when entering the Aquatics facility:1. Any person showing evidence of skin disease, sore or inflamed eyes, cold, nasal or ear discharges or any communicable

disease shall be refused admission.2. Persons with excessive sunburn, open blisters cuts or bandages shall be refused admission.3. No dogs, except Seeing Eye dogs or other animals shall be allowed in the pool, spa area, dressing rooms, or other parts of

the enclosure.4. No food or drink permitted in the pool area. This includes gum chewing.5. All persons shall shower before entering the water.6. Expectoration, roughness, rowdiness or other conduct affecting the safety and comfort of others shall not be permitted.7. Indoor bathing shall be prohibited during an electrical storm. The pool will reopen 30 minutes after the storm.8. Persons suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol shall be prohibited from entering the water.9. No smoking is permitted in the pool area.10. Swimmers must obey the lifeguards’ instructions.11. No diving is permitted unless under direct supervision.12. Children who are not toilet trained must wear swim diapers under their bathing

suit. Disposable diapers are not allowed in the pool13. Adult supervision is required in the water for all non-swimmers.14. Toys and floating devices permitted at the discretion of the Aquatic staff to

ensure a safe environment. Equipment for general member use (bubbles, barbells, kickboards, noodles) is located outside of the Aquatics office.

15. Running in the pool area is prohibited.16. Lap lanes are for lap swimming only.17. Children AGE 10 OR OLDER are welcome to use lanes for swimming, provided they can keep the pace of the lane and are

swimming laps.18. Proper swim attire is required.19. All hair shoulder length or longer must be tied back or a swim cap must be worn.20. The JCC is not responsible for the lost or theft of any personal belongings.21. During fire alarms all persons must exit the building, no one is allowed back into locker rooms.

Proper supervision is more than the lifeguards’ responsibility: Children ages 4 and younger MUST have an adult within arm’s length of them at all times. Children ages 7-11 are permitted in the pool provided that a parent remains in the pool area. Children ages 12 and up are permitted to be alone in the facility. Thank you for helping us keep our pools safe and secure.

How do I choose the right swim class/level?If you are unsure of a child's level, you can bring your swimmer in to be tested or contact the Aquatics Director for questions. An in-person evaluation will ensure that your child will be in the right class.  It only takes a few minutes for an instructor to evaluate a swimmer's level.  Call the Aquatics office for more information or to schedule an appointment to start your swimmer off with the right class this session.

Can I observe lessons? While we recognize that parents are as thrilled about the progress of their children as the students are, we respectfully ask that parents remain seated on the 6 foot side of the pool bleachers for the duration of your child’s lesson. Unless specified (such as a parent/child swim class) parents are not permitted in the water with their children as this is a distraction to the group as a whole. Thank you for your cooperation.

What is the make up policy?Group swim classes at the Bridgewater JCC enjoy a limited four students to one instructor ratio. Because of this ratio classes fill up quickly leaving not much option for a makeup class. In order to be considered for a make up class, a doctor’s note must be given to the Aquatics Office. The Aquatics Department cannot guarantee that a makeup class will be available, however every effort will be made to accommodate the need of the individual and that there is space in the class desired.

@jccbridgewater

• Aquatots I (Ages 6 months -18 months): A fun introduction to the water for infants beyond the bathtub! Song and activities help to develop basic arm and leg movements as well as learning to be comfortable getting their faces and bodies wet. Water safety and fun is also stressed. A swim diaper and rubber pants are required under the child’s swimsuit.

• Aquatots II (Ages 18 months to 3 years old): For those little swimmers who are already comfortable in the water! Songs and activities help infants and toddlers further gain confidence and practice their budding basic swimming skills. Starfish skills are introduced and children begin to work more with the instructor to get prepared to move to the next level of swimming and rely less on Mommy and Daddy’s help. A swim diaper and rubber pants are required under a child’s swimsuit.

• LittleStarfish(Ages2andahalf-3andahalf): This course is for those little ones who can’t wait to put their faces in the water and splash around but aren’t quite ready to leave Mommy and Daddy and move onto Starfish. This course will teach all of the Starfish skills with the comfort of their parents or adult friend in the water to help them explore the fun world of the pool. Emphasis will be placed on transitioning toddlers from parents to instructor and gaining confidence with their independence in the water.

• Starfish(PreschoolLevel1): There are no prerequisites for this course. The objective of Level 1 is to help children feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. In Level 1, elementary aquatic skills are taught, which children build on as they progress through the Preschool Aquatics and Learn-to-Swim levels. At this level, children also start developing good attitudes and safe practices around the water.

• Seaponies(PreschoolLevel2):Children entering this course must have a Preschool Aquatics Level 1 certificate or be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements from Level 1. The objectives of Level 2 are to build upon the skills learned in Level 1 and give children success with fundamental skills. Children learn to float on their back without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Children continue to explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes. Level 2 adds to the self-help and basic rescue skills begun in Level 1.

• Dolphins(PreschoolLevel3): Children entering this course must have a Preschool Aquatics Level 2 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements from Level 2. The objective of Level 3 is to build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice. Children learn to effectively coordinate combined simultaneous arm and leg actions and alternating arm and leg actions. As in all levels, additional safety skills are learned.

• AdvancedDolphins(PreschoolLevel4): Children entering this course must have a Preschool Aquatics Level 3 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements from Level 3. This course is designed for students who can swim halfway across the pool but need work on coordination and endurance. Elementary backstroke and diving will also be introduced to students.

Youth Courses

• Level1(IntroductiontoWaterSkills): There are no prerequisites for this level. The objectives of Level 1 are to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help participants feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. In Level 1, participants learn elementary aquatic skills, which they will build on as they progress through the six Learn-to-Swim levels. At this level, participants begin developing good attitudes about swimming and water safety, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around the water.

• Level2(FundamentalAquaticSkills):Participants entering this course must have a Level 1 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 1. The objective of Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Participants learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants continue to explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes.

• Level3(StrokeDevelopment):Participants entering this course must have a Level 2 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 2. The objectives of Level 3 are for participants to learn the survival float, the elementary backstroke and to coordinate the front crawl. They are introduced to the scissors kick and the dolphin kick and build on the fundamentals of treading water. Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from the side of the pool (if the water is 9 feet deep or deeper).

• Level4(StrokeImprovement): Participants entering this course must have a Level 3 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 3. The objectives of Level 4 are to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. Participants improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances. Students also continue to build upon the scissors kick and dolphin kick by adding the arms for sidestroke and butterfly. The back crawl and the breaststroke are introduced in Level 4, as well as the basics of turning at a wall.

• Level5(StrokeRefinement): Participants entering this course must have a Level 4 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the course requirements in Level 4. The objectives of Level 5 are to coordinate and refine strokes. Participants refine their performance of all the strokes (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Flip turns on the front and back are also introduced.

• Level6(PersonalWaterSafety): Participants entering this course must have a Level 5 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 5. The objectives of Level 6 are to allow for swimmers to be comfortable and confident in the water, while increasing their endurance and their stroke efficiency. Swimmers will perfect breaststroke and butterfly as well as continue building all strokes and endurance. Flip turns will be introduced and diving will be expanded to proficiency.

PJ Library is Here!! And it's FREE!!!The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC and The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties are proud to offer this exciting program to our community! In cooperation with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, The PJ Library program enriches Judaic culture in your homes through early education literature

and music. Monthly mailings of books and music to families with children ages six months to eight years encourage the joy of learning about our Jewish heritage.

Music TogetherMusic Together classes are based on the belief that music is as much a basic life skill as walking and talking, and that children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence and pleasure in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning. By emphasizing actual music instead of passively receiving it from CDs or television. Integral to our program is the idea that young children respond best to music when surrounded by those with whom they have a close bond. Consequently, the active participation of parent and care givers is an essential part of the rich musical environment we create.

Classes are held Mondays, 10 am and Wednesdays 9:45 am and 6:30 pm

Why a Jewish preschool?

At the JCC, children of all faiths are embraced. The JCC proudly teaches Jewish values — such as charity, kindness, and repairing the world. In addition, children celebrate Jewish and Israeli culture through food, song and story. While the JCC is not a synagogue or religious institution, it proudly celebrates Jewish culture in a fun, inclusive way. The JCC’s emphasis on Jewish values contributes to our excellent track record in preparing children for kindergarten – and life.

Modern Jews Engage the New Testament: Enhancing Jewish Well-Being in a Christian Environment

"Jews, Jesus & 'Gospel Dynamics.” Despite the New Testament’s impact on Jewish history, virtually all Jews avoid learning its underlying “DYNAMICS” — thereby leaving Christian friends perplexed as to why Jews are wary of the “Good News.” Modern Jews Engage the New Testament is a ground-breaking, solution-oriented book by Rabbi and Professor Michael J. Cook, the only rabbi in America with a Full-Professorial Chair in New Testament. All religions come learn and enjoy Michael J. Cook as he leads Jews out of anxieties plaguing them throughout history and enlightens Christians to alternative ways of processing New Testament texts on Jews and Jesus, Paul, Judas, Pilate, Caiaphas, and others.
