MEC graduate, Raya Al Abri, won the first prize in the
Shot put and Javelin competitions that were held
during the Second Oman Athletics Forum for the
Disabled at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Boshar.

The MEC IEEE Student Branch received the IEEE
Regional Exemplary Student Branch Award on 11th
March 2018. The branch was one among the 42
winning IEEE student branches from Region 8 (Africa, Europe and the Middle East).
Zahra Al Mehdi, a staff member of MEC, was
honored by the Photographic society of Oman.
She won the first place in contributions to the
services of the photographic community. The
event was held at the Photographic society of
Oman on 8th March 2018.
MEC’s student, Hitaf Al Balushi, got the first
international title in photography, Artist
FIAP, on the 11th of March 2018.
MEC’s student, Fatma Jamil Al Naamani, won
the Best Youth Medal, was ranked 6th and
earned an Honorable Mention in the German
International DVF-Photocup 2018 competition
in Germany.
Noor Al Busaidi, a student of MEC, won the Best
Youth Medal, was ranked 5th and also earned an
Honorable Mention in the German International
DVF-Photocup 2018 competition in Germany.
H.E. Dr. Hamad Mohammed Al- Dhawiani, Chairman,
National Records and Archives Authority (NRAA),
Sultanate of Oman approved the Middle East College
(MEC)’s Archives Management System on Thursday,
the 26th April, 2018. The event was held at the
Student Hub, MEC campus, Knowledge Oasis Muscat
(KOM). The signing ceremony was attended by Dr.
Abdullah Saif Al Sabahi, Chairman, MEC, and other dignitaries from NRAA, MEC management and staff.

The International Office organizes Korean Day 2018
The International Office organized the Korean Day as part
of the MEC Winter School on Wednesday, 7th February,
2018 at the MEC Student Hub. The event showcased
Korean culture and traditions such as traditional dances, and Korean food stalls.
MEC’s students won the Best Drama Show prize
in the 7th AFAQ Theater Festival that was held
at the Higher College of Technology (HCT) from
6th to 9th May 2018. The students also bagged
four other prizes in the festival which included
awards for the Best Décor, Best First Actor, Best
Second Actor and Best Director. Teams from
various higher education institutions of the
Sultanate and Qatar competed in the AFAQ Theater Festival which is held annually.
Department of Civil Engineering organizes ‘Meet
and Greet’ event
The Department of Civil Engineering organized the
‘Meet and Greet’ event for Fall 2017 on Thursday, 8
February 2018 at the MEC Student Hub. The event was
attended by eminent guests including industry experts
from various organizations like the Royal Court, Haya
Water, Department of Projects at Sultan Qaboos
University, Engineering Innovation Design and
Consultancy and Engineering Health & Safety – Larsen
& Toubro (Oman) LLC. Diploma and Bachelors level
students and academic staff also participated in the
event. The event brought together academics and
industry experts for networking, exchanging ideas, and identifying areas of collaboration.

Department of Electronics and Communication
Engineering organized the Electronics Project
Exhibition - Fall 2017 on the 7th of February 2018
at the Student Hub. The event was attended by
the Diploma and Bachelor's projects' students
and MEC's staff. It provided a platform for the
students to showcase their projects and
encourage them to hone their technical talents
and communications skills.
MEC organizes ‘Day out with the Dean’ for
the Academic Year 2017-2018
MEC organized a Day out with the Dean event on
the 10 February, 2018 at Al Sawadi beach, North
Al Batinah region. The event was attended by Dr.
Kiran G. R., the Dean, top management members,
MEC staff, and students. It included many
activities and competitions in different sports and
educational fields. The event aimed to provide
opportunities for students and staff to interact in
an informal environment. MEC organizes the ‘Day
out with the Dean’ event once every academic
year.
Badminton Competition (Doubles) for MEC
staff concludes
The Activities Office organized a Badminton
Competition (doubles) for MEC staff on 21
February, 2018 at the Sports Hall, MEC Student
Hub. Eight teams consisting of 16 staff competed
in the competition. Ameer and Mohammed Arif
were the winning team and Gladwin George and
Mohammed Rashid were the runner up team.
MEC celebrates Teacher’s Day
MEC celebrated Teacher’s Day at the MEC Plaza
on Sunday, 25 February, 2018. MEC staff actively
participated in the event. It included different fun
activities and wound up with a group photo
session.

Spring 2018 batch of students attend
Orientation Programme
MEC conducted an Orientation Programme for
the new batch of students of Spring 2018, on
26 and 27 February. The event gave the
students a brief preview of the educational
experience and campus life at MEC by
introducing them to the different services
offered by offices and departments, the rules
and regulations of the college, and the various
extra-curricular activities organized on
campus.
MEC Winter School 2018 experience concludes
MEC hosted a student delegation consisting of 17
students from Hanyang University, South Korea in
the period from 14 January to 8 February as part of
MEC Winter School 2018. The International Office
concluded the 2018 session of MEC Winter School by
organizing a farewell party on 8 February, 2018 at the
Student Hub. The event was attended by Dr. Kiran G.
R., the Dean, Dr. Saleh Al Shaaibi, Associate Dean –
External Relations and Community Outreach, MEC
staff and students, and the Korean student
delegation.
MEC participates in the Pakistani School Career
Expo 2018 and As Seeb International School
exhibition
MEC participated in the Pakistani School Career
Advisory Exhibition held at the Pakistani School,
Muscat on 18 February, 2018. The participation
raised the MEC brand awareness amongst the
students and provided the required career guidance
for the students. In addition, MEC participated in the
As Seeb International School Exhibition, Muscat on
Sunday, the 18th of February 2018. The participation
increased the institution’s brand awareness, programmes, and services amongst the students.

MEC organized a Cricket Tournament for MEC
staff on 1st March 2018 at the Sports Hall,
Student Hub, KOM. Dr. Vishal Dattana, Mr.
Syed Imran Ali Kazmi, Mr. Jitendra Pandey, Mr.
Raza Hasan, Mr. Mohammed Arif Kundu Kavil
and Mr. Mohammed Rashid were announced

Breda University, The Netherlands, on 5th
March 2018 at the Student Hub, KOM, under
the patronage of Eng. Abdulrahman Salim Al

Award event on 12th March 2018 at MEC’s
Student Hub. The event is organized on an
annual basis to enhance and increase the
innovative practices adopted by MEC members.

Communication Engineering conducts a site
visit
Department of Electronics and Communication
Engineering organized a visit to South Al
Maabelah High School for girls as part of
community engagement activities of the
department on 15th March 2018. The visit
included a brief introduction about MEC and
the Electronics & Telecommunication
Engineering and Electronics and
Instrumentation programmes. Furthermore,
the faculties demonstrated the basic electronic
components and held a competition for the
students in connecting electronic circuits. In
addition, the students met the Lego robot and
tried to use their mobile phones to control it.
MEC hosts ‘Upgrade’ Workshop
MEC hosted a workshop organized by
‘Upgrade’ on the topic ‘Transforming a
Graduation Project to a Start-up’, on 12th
March 2018 at MEC’s Student Hub.

Week from 18th to 20th March 2018, at the
Student Hub. The event was held under the
auspices of H.H. Sayyida Basma Al Said and

SAC organizes COMEC II
The Student Advisory Council (SAC) at MEC organized
the 2nd “COMEC” event, the Second Comic Festival in
MEC, on 22nd March 2018 at the Student Hub. The
event provided MEC students an opportunity to
showcase and enhance their talent in different areas
like designing, gaming, singing, drawing, music and fashion to name a few.

Dr. Smitha Nair addresses a seminar on
“Interdisciplinary research collaboration in Bioinformatics”
Dr. Smitha Sunil Kumaran Nair, Head of
Postgraduate Studies, addressed a seminar
on “Interdisciplinary research collaboration in
Bioinformatics” organized by the Department
of Biology, SQU, on 22nd March 2018. Dr
Smitha familiarized the participants with the
significance of bioinformatics’ problems in
the era of Big data and Artificial Intelligence.
Furthermore, she focused on exploring the
possibility of research collaboration across
the institutions. Faculty members, Masters’
students, Ph. D and Post-doctoral scholars of
the department, attended the seminar.
Department of Civil Engineering organized a
site visit
The students and faculty of the Innovation in
Construction module in the Civil Engineering
programme organized a site visit to
Innovation Hub on Wheels, KOM, on 23rd
March 2018. The visit helped the students to
understand more about the modern
construction materials and sustainable
construction methods and materials.
Centre for Postgraduate Studies visits PDO
The Centre for Postgraduate Studies
conducted an industry visit to Petroleum
Development Oman (PDO) on 25th March
2018. The visit was attended by the Master of
Science in Information Technology (MSc. IT)
students. The visit provided the students with
awareness of the practical learning of
Enterprise Resource Planning in a real-life
environment.
Placement and Entrepreneurship Office
organizes a workshop on ‘Self Preparation
and Work Ethics’
The Placement and Entrepreneurship Office
at MEC organized a workshop titled ‘Self
preparation and Work Ethics on 27th March
2018 at the Student Hub. The workshop was
presented by Eng Ali Issa Shamas, CEO,
Dhofar Energy Company, and was attended
by the MEC’s students and staff.

MEC Participated in Earth Hour 2018
As part of its continuous contributions to build
up a better environment and help in making the
world a sustainable place for future generations
to come, MEC participated in the Earth Hour on
24th March 2018 from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. All
the lights were switched off in the college
campus. The event created a better awareness
between MEC community members and the
Omani community, highlighting the importance
of every environment related action taken and
its consequences on the environment and the earth.
MEC and KOM organize the Career and
Training Opportunities Fair 2018
MEC and KOM jointly organized a Career and
Training Opportunities Fair for the year 2018.
The event was held at MEC’s Student Hub,
KOM, on Monday, 26th March 2018, under the
patronage of H. E. Sheikh Ahmed bin
Mohammed bin Nasser Al Nadabi, Under-
secretary for Civil Service Affairs, Ministry of
Civil Service. Hilal bin Hamad Al Hasani, Chief
Executive Officer of the Public Establishment
for Industrial Estates (PEIE) and Nasser Al
Malki, Acting Director General of Knowledge
Oasis Muscat were also present on the
occasion. The event brought together
teaching faculty and industrial experts
facilitating strengthening of their relationship
and collaboration, to provide workshops ,
lectures, training opportunities and industry
visits for students.
The 8th Business Meet concludes
The Department of Management Studies (DMS)
and the Business Society at MEC organized its
8th Business Meet on 28th March 2018 at the
MEC Student Hub, Knowledge Oasis Muscat
(KOM). The event was held under the auspices
of Warith Al Kharusi, Executive Director, Al
Safwa Group & Partners and attended by
distinguished guests and MEC faculty.

Rovers’ clans on the 28th of March 2018 at

The 1st MEC TESOL Conference concludes
The Center for Foundation Studies and the
Centre for Academic Writing, MEC jointly
organized the 1st MEC TESOL Conference on
29th March 2018, at the MEC Student Hub.
The theme of the conference was: English in
Changing Local and International Contexts.
Over 21 educational institutions from Oman
and other countries participated in the
conference. The conference brought
together English Language Teaching (ELT)
practitioners, researchers, and curriculum
developers and provided them with a
platform to share their best practices.
Visit to Al-Hasan bin Hashim School
Within the community outreach strategy of
MEC, Dr Said Almaawali, Assistant Professor,
Department of Civil Engineering, conducted a
visit on 26 March 2018 to Al-Hasan bin Hashim
School (Classes 11 and 12), Al-Mubailah – Al
Seeb, Muscat to share knowledge with the
students and to prepare them to enter the
world of higher education. A presentation was
made on higher education, especially in the
field of Civil Engineering. The programmes
offered by Department of Civil Engineering at
MEC were also briefly introduced in the
presentation.
Palestine’s Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman,
H.E. Ambassador Ahmed Abbas Ramadhan visited
MEC on 4th April 2018.
Mr. Mohammed Jamil Hilal, Cultural Attaché, Embassy of the
Kingdom of Bahrain, in Oman visited MEC on 12th April 2018.

The Department of Electronics and
Communication Engineering organized a
workshop on “Numbering the Pins of Digital
Gates in Digital Circuits” on 2nd April 2018. The
workshop was attended by students enrolled for
the Digital Electronics module and the faculty of
the department. Its objective was to help
students learn how to connect electronic circuits easily, in a trainer kit.
A site visit to Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM) – Eco
Structure was organized by the Department of Civil
Engineering on the 28th of March 2018. The visit
provided the students with knowledge about the
innovation in construction projects.
An educational site visit to Al Mazaya Residency, Al
Seeb, was organized by the Department of Civil
Engineering on 2nd April 2018. The visit provided
students with practical knowledge about the post-tensioning slab activity to be carried out.
MEC organized its 13th Orphans Day on 3rd April
2018 at the MEC Student Hub. The event was held
under the patronage of H. E. Mohammed bin
Sulaiman Al Kindi, Member, Al Shura Council. The
programme included various activities to bring a
smile and spread joy among the orphans. This
programme was one of the activities of the
Community Outreach Programme and initiatives
adopted by the college.
MEC’s academic departments organized the 8th
MEC Technical Gathering on the 4th of April 2018 at
the Student Hub. The event was attended by MEC
management, staff, and students. It provided a
platform for displaying various technical projects
set up by the students, motivating them to learn
more and enrich their technical knowledge. Two
competitions were held for the Electronics and
Communication Engineering students as part of the
event which included the Best Bachelor Project
Award ceremony for Fall 2017. A national level quiz
was also conducted along with various other
activities organized by the Department of Civil
Engineering, such as: how to use the Auto CAD skill in developing the drawings of a plan for a building.
MEC organized the 6th International Day on 5th
April 2018 at the MEC Student Hub. The event
presents a platform for MEC staff and students to
celebrate the cultural diversity of the college
where members of the MEC family, belonging to
different nationalities and cultural backgrounds
participate and share their cultures with each other.
The Centre for Postgraduate Studies organized a
workshop on “Seeds of Entrepreneurship”, on the
11th of April 2018, at the Student Hub. The
workshop was presented by Abdullah Hamed Al
Brashdi from SME Development Fund and attended
by MEC’s Postgraduate students and faculty. It
provided the students with the awareness, skill and
inspiration for entrepreneurial success in different areas of their profession.

The Department for Management Studies organized
a workshop on “Future Logistics – Challenges and
Opportunities” on 7th April 2018. The workshop was
presented by Mr. Nabil Salim Al Baimani, Executive
Chief, Oman Logistics Center – ASYAD. The attendees
included the department’s staff and students. The
objective of the workshop was to enhance students’ knowledge in the field of Logistics.
In line with the vision of the Sultanate to keep the
country clean, the Department of Computing, MEC,
conducted a Community Outreach initiative, on 7th
April 2018 by cleaning an area of the beach at Al
Seeb. Forty members from the department
participated in the initiative. This initiative was
conducted to increase awareness among the
department’s members, their families and friends
and give them a chance to make a contribution in
support of the community.
The Student Success Centre organized a workshop on
“Team Building” on 11th April 2018. The workshop
provided the students with guidance and the use of
proper techniques for building a team through
various interactive activities conducted during the workshop.
MEC organized a Blood Donation Camp on 10th and
11th April 2018 at the MEC Student Hub. The camp
was organised to develop in MEC staff and students, the spirit of helping others.
The Department of Civil Engineering organized
various workshops for the General Foundation
Programme (GFP) students from 8th to 12th April
2018. The workshops shared information about
Civil Engineering with the students.
Site visits to Al Khoudh Wadi were organized by the
Department of Civil Engineering on the 12th and 22nd
of April 2018. The visits helped to increase the
students’ knowledge about the geographical site as part of the desk study.

The MEC Library and Learning Resources Centre
organized the MEC Library Week from 8th to 12th April
2018 at the MEC Library. The event was conducted to
encourage students to read, search for information
and gain knowledge through the various learning
resources available and accessible to them in the
library, such as books, journals, magazines and online resources.
The Department of Electronics and Communication
Engineering organized a workshop titled
“Introduction to Arduino”, on 16th April 2018, which
was presented by Hamida Al Mamari, Lab
Technician, and attended by project students of the
department. It provided the students with
information on how to use the Arduino programme for their graduation projects.
MEC participated in the Global Higher Education
Exhibition (GHEDEX) that was held from 16th to 18th
April 2018 at the Oman Convention and Exhibition
Centre. The exhibition was inaugurated under the
auspices of H.H. Sayyida Dr. Mona bint Fahad AlSaid,
Assistant Vice Chancellor for International
Cooperation, Sultan Qaboos University. Other
eminent persons and dignitaries from the public and private sectors were also present on the occasion.
The Department of Civil Engineering organized an
educational site visit to Mall of Oman for full-time
and part-time Civil Engineering students on 4th and
17th of April 2018, respectively. The visit provided
the students with practical knowledge about the structural detailing, beam, column and flat slab.

lectures on Property Surveys and Building
Pathology and on Management Systems in
Construction on 16th and 17th April 2018
respectively. The lectures was delivered by Eng.
Sami Elhaj Abdullah, Project Managing Expert at
Royal Court Affairs, Oman. He provided practical
knowledge and shared industry experience, giving updates to the students.
The Department of Civil Engineering organized a
guest lecture titled “Practical Awareness on HSE in
Civil Engineering Constructions Projects” on 18th
April 2018. The lecture was presented by Ranjit
Badole, PDO authorized HSE Trainer at 3D Training
Services, and attended by the department’s
students and staff. It provided the students with
practical knowledge on HSE in Civil Engineering projects.
The Department of Civil Engineering organized a
lecture on “HSE in Construction Industry and its
Implications on the Overall Project Cost”, on the
25th of April 2018. The lecture was delivered by Mr.
Suresh Athilkar and attended by Civil Engineering
students and faculty. The objective was to raise the
participants’ knowledge on evaluating pricing of
tender and the impact of health and safety, and risk on the project’s cost.

The Department of Civil Engineering organized a
community outreach programme on the 16th and
23rd of April 2018. It was a charity event
organized to handover all the collected amount
through the registration and the charity box as donation, to the orphans.
The Department of Civil Engineering organized a
guest lecture on the 25th April 2018. The lecture
was delivered by Eng. Suresh Athilkar and Eng.
Sivasankar Arunachalam and attended by the
department’s students and staff. It provided the
students with knowledge about health and
safety in construction projects.
The Career Services and Entrepreneurship Office and
Centre for Postgraduate Studies, in cooperation with
other Omani private and public institutions, organized
“Preparing for the Future” programme on 15th May
2018 at the MEC Student Hub. The programme
included various workshops to share experiences and
provide guidance to the students for preparing them for a better career path in the future.
H. E. Prof. Ahed Al Wahadni, Secretary General,
Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific
Research – Jordan, paid a visit to MEC on the 13th of May 2018.
The Alumni Office organized an Alumni Café at
the MEC Staff Lounge on 10th May 2018. The
event provided a platform for the alumni to
share their stories and enhance the relationship between them and MEC.
MEC in cooperation with the National Records and
Archives Authority organized the 1st International
Conference on Records and Archives from 25th to 26th
of April 2018 at the MEC Student Hub. The event was
held under the patronage of H. E. Dr. Abdullah bin
Mohammed Al Saidi, Minister of Legal Affairs, Oman,
and in the presence of H.E. Dr. Hamad Mohammed Al-
Dhawiani, Chairman, National Records and Archives
Authority (NRAA), Oman. Dr. Abdullah Saif Al Sabahi,
Chairman, MEC, and other dignitaries from different
private and public institutions were also present on the occasion.

A group consisting of nine students and two
faculty from MEC IEEE Student Branch visited
STOMO Power Plant on the 15th of May 2018. The
visit helped to raise awareness about the technical
and structural requirements necessary to monitor
and control electrical power generation and
achieve success in the energy industry.
The Centre for Postgraduate Studies organized a
‘Meet and greet’ event and Poster sessions from 29th
to 31st May 2018 at MEC. The event was attended by
distinguished guests from various fields. They
included, Abdullah Al Brashdi, Training Expert at SME
Development Fund, Shariefa Al Barami, Managing
Director of Oman Tech Fund, Eng. Magdi Bazara from
Schlumberger, and MEC staff and students. Students
got an opportunity to display their projects / posters
in the presence of industry representatives and
interacted with them to receive valuable feedback on their PG projects.
The International Office organized a workshop
titled ‘What is next after graduation?’ on 21st May
2018. The workshop was presented by MEC’s
international alumni and attended by the
international students and staff members. It
provided a platform for the alumni and present
students to share their knowledge and experience
about what can be expected after graduation and how to plan well for the next step in their life.
The Career Services and Entrepreneurship Office
organized TaMECon Competition on 17th May 2018.
The highlight of the competition was the discussion of
creative ideas presented by the participating
students, as it was contributory in developing the
entrepreneurial talent and skills in the students and
provide them with valuable guidance to overcome the
challenges and difficulties they might face when developing a business.

The Department of Civil Engineering organized a
guest lecture on “Trending Procedures in the
Construction Industry” on the 23rd of May 2018.
The lecture was delivered by Al Khalil Sinawi and
attended by the students and staff of the
department. This was held to raise the attendees’
awareness and knowledge about the constructions field.
The Department of Civil Engineering organized
workshops on “Quantity Takeoff and Cost Estimate”
for both PG and UG students on 9th and 21st May
2018 respectively. The workshops helped to increase
the students’ knowledge and awareness about
quantity takeoff of building items using COSTX
Software.
An industry visit to Al Seeb, STP of Haya Water was
organized by the Department of Civil Engineering on
the 2nd of May 2018. The visit was attended by the
department’s students and faculty in cooperation
with the Eng. Ali Bharakad from Haya Water, Oman.
It provided the students with practical knowledge
about the waste water treatment process and methods.
Postgraduate (PG) Club at MEC organized a community outreach and a charity initiative named ‘Art with
Heart’ presented by Mr. Amit Chotrani, on Tuesday, 1st May 2018 at the MEC Campus. Students from the
different postgraduate programmes and staff members participated in the event. The event involved MEC
members in the community programmes at MEC and raised their awareness about the importance of
participating in helping and developing the society. The event provided a platform for the participants to
showcase their talents and skill in drawing and the art field. It is worth mentioning that the proceeds from
the workshop will be donated to a selected charity organization in the Sultanate.
A team of staff members from the Department of
Computing, conducted a workshop on 19th May
2018, titled “Early Learning Tools”, at the Indian
School Al Mabela. The staff team included
Dhanalakshmi Venugopal, Renjini Jose, Aparna
Agarwal and Dr. Jayakumari C. The workshop
imparted training to a group of school teachers on
early learning and teaching tools to improve the
quality of teaching and learning at the school. This
workshop was one of the community outreach initiatives taken by the department.
A group of students from the Department of Civil
Engineering, MEC, attended the National Symposium
on Engineering Final Year Projects (NSEFYP), on 2nd
May 2018. This is an annual symposium organized
by the College of Engineering and Architecture, University of Nizwa, Nizwa.

MEC organized its 8th Art, Culture and Photography
Summit titled ‘Blue’, from 30th April to 1st May 2018
at the MEC Student Hub, Knowledge Oasis Muscat
(KOM). The gathering brought together
photographers from about 47 educational
institutions from 5 different countries around the
world. Out of the 377 entries submitted by 188
photographers, 50 photographs were chosen for
display in the photography exhibition organized
during the gathering.
The MEC Leadership Development Programme
launched in June 2017 in coordination with MEC’s
academic partner, Coventry University (CU), UK,
concluded its first phase on the 14th of May 2018
at the Student Hub, MEC campus, Knowledge Oasis
Muscat (KOM). The programme, which lasted for a
year, targeted MEC’s top management and the
Heads and Assistant Heads of the academic and
administrative departments of the college. It
developed their leadership and problem-solving
skills, critical thinking, and other tale to make the
institution future-ready and help in achieving the
college’s vision to contribute in the development of a harmonious and sustainable world.
Middle East College (MEC) hosted a group of four
students from the British School Muscat (BSM) from
29th April to 1st May 2018, as part of their 3-day
training programme designed to develop their
personal and social skills. The programme gave the
students the opportunity to explore various
operations in a higher education institution, where
they gained valuable experience through hands-on
training in the systems and processes at various
academic support and professional services
departments in the college.

The KOM Community Cup 2018 was organised by Middle East College (MEC) from 20th May to 30th May
2018, at the Sports Hall, MEC Student Hub, Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM). A total of ten teams, including
Infoline, Ericsson, MEC Staff, MEC Students, Huawei A, Huawei B, ITA, AWASR, PEIE, and a team from the
Rusayl Industrial Area, participated in the championship. The teams represented different institutions and
companies located in KOM. The championship aimed at strengthening relationships and developing cooperation and a collaborative spirit between the participating institutions.
