Over the past month in Paramus and Newington, we have launched the DAYFORCE WALLET! It is a new way

to get paid, a pay on-demand system. It is free to Team Members (must be 18+). You

can access 50% of your net earnings before our tradi-tional payday. You get a debit card (through Master-card) and can see your net earnings each day after you punch out for the day. Emergencies happen and you will be able to have money on your card within seconds. See your local HR to find out when your store will have this option available! “The Dayforce Wallet is good for me because if

I need gas or groceries in the middle of the week, I don’t have to stress and wait for

payday. I can move money onto my card after any shift.” — Miguel L., Paramus Deli

“I would recommend the Dayforce Wallet to anyone! It helps make payday easier. I

can see all my earnings at the end of the day, and it puts the money in my account whenever

I need it.” — Jeremy C., Paramus Deli

Curbside Pickup Success

We won’t forget 2020

anytime soon! For the past

eight years, I have been a wedding planner so when the pandemic hit, I knew that industry and my work were going to be changed completely. I was so grateful to be able to come back to work at Stew’s, certain that there would be a department or area in the store that would be in need of some help. After talking with my dad and Chris, they

thought the new Curbside Pickup program would be a good spot for me. We have learned a whole new meaning of Customer Service, and have been able to truly help people through an incredibly dif-ficult time. We have been lucky enough to form a little community here in Danbury, and really have had a chance to get to

know our customers. The success of Curbside Pickup has been a FULL TEAM EF-FORT, and I wanted to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to Chris, Hunter and An-drew, who have all been so involved on the “behind

the scenes” end of things, and to our incredible team of shoppers: Kevin, Lisa, Troy, Riva, Shannon, Ben, Grace and Brendan. None of this could have been done without your hard

work and dedication to making this a success. I am very excited to see what’s to come in 2021, and I know that the cus-tomers are thrilled to have this service made avail-able to them!

W e have so many great Team Members who are willing to go above and beyond when asked to help out. Here are a

couple of examples: Some of our VIP customers email their wine and beer

requests to us and ask us to help them “restock their cellars.” Often these are very big orders. We had one such order recently and Chavi jumped in to help put it together without anyone asking him to do so — the order was huge—it filled a U-boat! That’s teamwork.

Jon and Chris jumped at the chance to help with a team training video, and let me tell you, they are im-pressive — we have two great public speakers here! Thanks guys for helping out.

A positive “can do” attitude goes far. These guys are rock stars and they deserve to be praised!

The Gift of Giving!By Anthony W., East Meadow Front End

Our store manager, Jessica H., received a request from a girl scout named Hannah asking for a food donation. Her goal was

to collect 4,000 pounds of food to help families in need fight hunger. Hannah was ecstatic to hear that we would donate a

pallet of grocery items, including Stew Leonard’s seltzer, tomato sauce and snacks. Since we gave Hannah so much, she will make sure it goes to families in need!

Chelsea ... New HR Specialist

June 2021 Stew’s News 5

By Elaine B., Danbury HR

Congratulations to Chelsea — she has been promoted to HR Specialist in Danbury. Chelsea began working as a

cashier in 2004 during breaks from college. We quickly saw that she had the ability to

take on additional responsibility and Chelsea was pro-moted to Customer Service — once again, during her college breaks.

As soon as Chelsea gradu-ated from UCONN in Storrs with a bachelor’s in Human Development and Family Studies, she applied for an open position in Human Re-sources as HR Assistant. Her great work ethic and desire to learn sealed the position for her. Chelsea has grown so much in this role that she took on the role of HR Coordinator in 2008.

In addition to her out-standing work in HR, Chelsea is a real team player helping out in Catering, Front End and Garden Center during the busy times. In her free time, she loves being with her daughter, Avery, son, Arlo, and of course, Nick, her husband, whom she met here at Stew’s! As you can imagine, with two young children they are kept very busy!

I see many more opportunities ahead for Chelsea. We are all very

proud of her growth here in Danbury.

My name is KELLY ARENA and I have just

joined the team as Stew’s assistant. I’m

looking forward to meeting everyone, but also wanted to share a little bit about myself.

I started working in the Ice Cream department of the

Danbury store when I was 15.  From there I moved to the Garden Center for a year before working a season in the Hoedown and lastly, the Front End.  I went to the Newington store when it opened as Front End Supervisor and worked there for eight

years.  I left Stew’s in 2012 to work in Client Services and then as a Project Manager at a small technology firm.  When I heard of the opportunity to come back to Stew’s, I knew it was the right choice for me.  Both of my parents, Linda and Ed Arena, and my husband Irwin Paltoo, all work at Stew’s and it is a true “family

business.”  I love the culture and the values and am honored to be part of the team again!

I’m MOOoooving UpBy Azahria J., East Meadow Human Resources

Being a part of the Stew Leonard’s team has been an incredibly rewarding experience. From working in the Fish department to the Art department

then on to Human Resources, I can honestly say I never thought it would be me. But with the encouragement of my Fish team, Angie from Art, and Anthony who trusted me enough to take over his position, I took a chance. Going forward, I have gotten to see Stew Leonard’s on a deeper level thanks to Amy. With Amy’s help and guidance, I see the structure and effort it takes to run a successful company and how our Team Members are the foundation of that success. Since being in this new position, I have become familiar with most of the Team Members in our store and it’s great to know Human Resources will continue to be available to them. With that, I hope my Team Members and colleagues see just how grateful I am for their acceptance of me in this role and that I hope to continue to learn, grow and build relationships with them.

Tommy, it’s been a pleasure working with you for the past 14 years here in Danbury. You are very passionate about the business and I loved hearing all the stories you had about starting up the Christmas and Garden Shops. From you sleeping in your truck because you cared so much about having everything just right in the tree shop, to hauling trees across the parking lot, you did it all. Many departments and positions later you have definitely earned the right to take it easy now! Enjoy being with your beautiful family, Tommy, and of course I don’t need to mention being on the golf course! I’ll miss you, so don’t be a stranger! - Elaine B., Danbury HR

Welcoming New Team Members & New Customers

By Evelyn M., Yonkers Front End

When I started at Stew Leonard’s on Feb-ruary 14th, 2000, I felt so welcomed. I was treated with such respect. Looking

back, I see the importance of extending the same to our new Team Members and cus-

tomers. At any level that we are working, it’s important to bring a welcoming attitude: a good morning, have a great day, welcome to our team, if you need help I am here, don’t hesitate to ask if you have a question, a smile, etc. There are good seeds in the world and it is up to us to plant them! One day they will grow beautifully. Small things can make a big difference. You will be sur-prised how a small gesture makes a great impact in people’s lives.

Last week, I was walking in the store and a customer approached me. She said: “I have been looking for you to say thank you. Last year when the pandemic started, you were on a register and I was so distressed and fear-ful, but you looked into my eyes and said not to be afraid, everything will be ok. Just PRAY. Your words made a huge impact. They really helped me, I prayed, and it made me more secure that everything was going to be ok.” I smiled at her and told her to just keep hoping for the best that is coming. Then, she said these words that touched my heart: “NEVER UNDERESTIMATE WHAT YOU ARE DOING.” So I tell you the same — NEVER UNDERESTIMATE WHAT YOU ARE DOING. YOU ARE CHANGING PEOPLE’S LIVES FOR GOOD. I wish you always the best and hope from the bottom of my heart great things are coming ahead!

excellent customer service! She started working here in August of 2019. She loves to

socialize with the customers and build relationships with her co-workers. Besides the Front End, Olivia

has worked in Time & Attendance, Bakery, Deli, Kitchen, Pizza, Coffee and the Garden Shop! WOW! She was born in

Westchester, NY and currently attends WCSU. When she is not working, she enjoys hanging out with her friends and family,

playing Sims, crafting and shopping! Her most prized possessions are her two dogs, Mayah and Tank. If Olivia were to

win the lottery, she would pay off her student loans and help her family out! Her favorite memories working here are welcoming new customers to the store and helping them with whatever

they need! Keep up the good work, Olivia!

Hoopin’ it Up with

GMA Weekend More than two million viewers tuned in to catch Stew Jr. on

GMA Weekend in March!  Stew demonstrated how to make two fresh and

WORLD WIDE EXCHANGE in March to discuss what has changed here at Stew

Leonard’s as we reached the one year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stew talked about

how we’ve closed our self-service bars, installed two football

fields’ worth of plexiglass, and that sales of immunity-

boosting foods like citrus and garlic have skyrocketed.

We ordered takeout the other

night from a family-owned restaurant called Layla’s Falafel in Fairfield. The woman work-ing behind the counter was so enthusiastic about the little business she was growing! We had a nice conversation about the restaurant industry and how it has changed over the last year with the pan-demic. When I got home, we couldn’t even wait to sit down so we ate right at the kitchen counter. The meal was so incredible — hot and fresh. When I asked Alesha how much every-

thing cost (she tends to order a lot!) she said, “I don’t know; didn’t you pay?” I said, “No, I thought you paid over the phone?” We looked at each other and laughed saying ... uh oh. I immediately called the restaurant to explain my-self and the owner picked up the phone. She said, “Andrew, I can’t believe you’re calling back to pay. I just assumed you were a goner! Thank you for your honesty. I’ll take a few things off the bill.” Now here’s the question…1) How many people call back to pay vs. how many people say Free Meal? 2) How many restaurants reward the customer a little some-thing for being honest?

A lix in Norwalk Receiv-

ing is amazing! He went above and be-yond to solve a BIG prob-lem here in Norwalk. After contractors finished working on Stew’s office, they had to find a way to bring four huge garbage cans of cement pieces down to the dumpster. The cans could not be

lifted because they were so heavy. Once we got into Receiving, I asked Alix if he could think of a way to make this easier for everyone. He said, “I will help you — follow me.” He loaded the garbage cans onto a pallet and brought them outside to the dumpster with the

Hyster. Not only did he bring them to the dump-ster, he then got up and unloaded the garbage cans

(by himself!) and even got into the dumpster to finish unloading. Won-derful teamwork.

Seems like an eternity since we have had blue skies, bright sunshine and a warm breeze. It really does change

your whole attitude. People are smiling and laughing, enjoying outdoor fun with their

families and loved ones and thinking about outdoor parties. People are starting to gather in smaller groups as they slowly start to get back to some kind of nor-malcy. That means they will be coming to Stew’s to pick up their favorite picnic foods! The Kitchen always has a variety of the best picnic salads, from our famous BLT pasta salad, pasta cruda and, of course, the all-time classics — potato, macaroni and coleslaw. Grab fried chicken and coleslaw with a dessert from Bethy’s Bak-ery and you have a complete, easy meal without all the fuss. You can enjoy the party, too! Don’t forget dips. They are made fresh daily — just as all of the prepared food in the gourmet case is. If you don’t feel like cooking and want something different, this is the case for you. Everything is super fresh, delicious and they follow the highest standard — “If you wouldn’t bring it home to your mother, don’t put it out for our customers!”

34 Stew’s News June 2021

By Bailey R., East Meadow Front End You know you’ve been wondering.

So after long, careful consider-

ation, using my vast knowledge of astrology,

the planets and Stew Leonard’s, I’ve come up with

what I am confident is the most accurate horoscope possible. So read on to see which of our most popular foods most align

with your personality!

Aries • March 21–April 19 Chocolate Drizzled Rice Cakes.

The erratic chocolate drizzle mimics the playful energy of an

Aries, the youngest of the zodiac.

Taurus • April 20–May 20 Chicken Burgers. Taurus is sturdy and dependable but

also tends to keep their feelings on the inside. Much

like the somewhat plain-looking chicken burger, the

best part of Taurus is on the inside.

Gemini • May 21–June 21 Lobster Rolls (twin pack).

Geminis are the twins of the zodiac, so it only makes sense

that the food that most aligns with them is so

delicious, we sell it in doubles!

Cancer •June 22–July 22 Cannoli Chips & Dip. Cancers

are one of the more creative signs, so the food

that aligns with them

best is a more fun twist on an otherwise

classic dessert.

Leo • July 23–August 22 Soft Serve Ice Cream. Leos are

confident in themselves and their identity. Our soft serve

ice cream is a staple of our store and it knows it. Why

mess with perfection?

Virgo • August 23–September 22

Fresh Mozzarella. Virgos tend to be perfectionists, and will

put hours into a project to achieve a result that meets

their standards. Our delicious mozzarella takes a little time to make, but the results are

always worth it.

Libra • September 23–October 23 7-Layer Dip. The symbol for Libras is the scale,

meaning they are very balanced and level-headed. A dip with distinct layers that complement each other is a perfect analogy for a Libra.

Scorpio • October 24–November 21 Margherita

Cauliflower Crust Pizza. Scorpios are magnetic and intriguing. Our margherita

cauliflower crust pizzas make you do a double-take because they’re like normal pizza…but

better.

Your Zodiac Sign & the Foods You Will Enjoy! Sagittarius • November 22–December 21 Fresh

Ground Coffee. Sagittarius is in-

dependent and self-sufficient.

Much like our fa-mous coffee, it

doesn’t need bells and whis-

tles to be great.

Capricorn • December 22–January 19 Powerhouse Salad. A healthy powerhouse

salad is supposed to make you feel better from

the inside out, much like the

way Capricorns are hardworking and constantly

bettering them-selves.

Aquarius • January 20–February 18 Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Loaves. Aquarius can

be guarded at times, but they’re also intelligent and

wise. On the outside it looks like a loaf of bread, but once

you cut into a buffalo chicken stuffed loaf, you see how

flavorful it actually is.

Pisces • February 19–March 20 Snowball Rolls.

Pisces are incredibly sensitive.

They’re soft, like a snowball roll, but also

more than meets the eye.

was so communicative and a pleasure to deal with. We’ll definitely be using curbside

She is a gem.”

“I was a customer service supervisor with a very large com-pany and know what good customer service is. We so often hear the negative and not the positive. Rose in the Fish de-partment is the BEST. She is kind, patient, honest and the

BEST cook. She has brought the Italian community to Stew Leonard’s with her mussels mari-nara. My husband is a true Italian

and can’t get enough of her cooking. We have been giving them to Ital-ians and non-Italians and they go crazy for this. They want to know

who the cook is. Rose certainly brings the customers to Stew

Leonard’s with whatever she makes. She gives the feeling she

knows you for years. What an asset to Stew Leonard’s! Rose deserves to be recognized. She is certainly

from the ‘heart.”

“I am guessing you are already aware of the amazing thing your Team Member, Silvy I., is doing outside of work hours, but

in case you are not, I could not go to sleep tonight without bringing it to your attention. I met her this week on the Vac-cine Angels Facebook page, a group of Connecticut citizens who are coming together to help others procure COVID vac-cine appointments. Silvy has found over 100 appointments for her co-workers already, and she is still going strong. I see her on this site in the late hours of the night, tirelessly seek-ing out appointments close to your store for her co-workers, and she does so in the most gracious and kind manner possi-ble. We first met when I found a cou-ple of appointments for her and we traded information, and she shared

that she was seeking these appoint-ments for her Team Members. Even-

tually I became curious and asked her where she worked, and when she told me I was absolutely moved to tears. I am a longtime Stew’s cus-tomer, and over the years so many Stew’s Team Members have shown me and my children extraordinary kindness. I was so honored to be

helping Silvy find appointments for this amazing group of people. And I am so happy to have met

Silvy, who clearly is an extraordinary human being. Silvy doesn’t know that I am writing this note, and I can tell from

the kind of person she is that she doesn’t expect any recogni-tion for her actions, but I just wanted to be sure that you were aware of the amazingly kind and generous work she is doing to make your store, and our community, a safer and

healthier place. I hope you will recognize her in some way to let her know how appreciated she is!”

“I wanted to tell you of my experience with Lesley D.  She conscientiously answered the phone, just after she had

gotten into the Kitchen. I told her that I tried three times to order Easter dinner online and the site wasn’t working.

She had to get an order out but took my number and called me back within twelve

minutes. Next, she had me try the site while she was on the phone

with me. Again, it didn’t work. She then took it upon herself to create an account for me. She told me it

would be faster for her to address and resolve this issue right then,

thereby enabling me to access the site. Next, she entered my order, confirmed my choices, and sent me a confirmation! Wow! Lesley

explained that the site was new. It was easy to be patient after all her help and the information she provided. Her effort was above

Crowds at Stew Leonard’s are ramping up. Team Members are working hard

to provide the best environment and selec-tion for our customers. New summer items

are here on our floor such as Stew’s own lime and tan-gerine seltzer water. There’s even a new selection of French fries and pizza in our frozen food section. The Grocery team has had a good first quarter with some changes to the layout of our floor selection. The renovation of our pasta, oil and sauce wall has opened up the space for traffic while keeping the products in plain view for easy access. Team Members Josh, Randy and David E. have been a terrific help throughout all these changes. Our overnight worker, Vann, continues to keep the store neat and full for the following day. Newest Team Mem-ber, Rafi, has been an excellent addition. We are proud to have him on our team. Summer is a welcome sight for us here at Stew’s. I hope everyone is able to get out and enjoy the nice weather when it arrives and has a great summer.

Farmingdale’s Bakery introduced a new item — Stew’s Bettah Cheddah Bis-cuits last summer and it was an instant

cayenne pepper that really enhances their flavor and adds a spicy kick. These biscuits can be a nice replace-ment for a standard dinner roll, enjoyed for breakfast or as a quick snack. Recipe development was conducted by team leader, Deanna L., and me.

What a bright future Derrick has! He is the

perfect example of someone who works hard and

jumps at every promotion opportunity. Along with Joe

Vota, I feel confident with him running the Grocery

department in Farmingdale.   Congratulations, Derrick, on becoming this month’s

Editor’s Spotlight. — Stew Sr., Founder

I remember the day Dan Arthur told me, “Butch,

you’ve got to interview this

guy named Derrick; he looks

like a good one!” From the moment I saw him, I knew he

was going to be a real STEW’S GUY! It’s an honor to write

about Derrick as he has become such a great Manager and friend! His infectious smile and outgoing personality make

it fun to be around him. His two daughters, Alexis and

Deasha, are by far the apples of his eye! Derrick, I salute you

and congrats on being the Editor’s Spotlight, a well-

deserved honor! The only bad thing about Derrick is his

choice in sports teams! METS AND JETS SERIOUSLY???

— Butch C., East Meadow Grocery Manager

Derrick is a rock-star at Stew’s! He jumped headfirst onto our team as

we opened up Long Island and has been a major contributor ever since. Derrick has graduated from many of Stew’s manage-

ment training courses but, most importantly, is HIGHLY re-

spected by our Team Members. There isn’t a job that Derrick

would ask a Team Member to do that he wouldn’t do himself (even on his day off)! He also has two daughters and a great wife. The one thing that would make Der-

rick really happy is if the Jets crush it this season! The Editor’s Spotlight is shining on the right

person with Derrick. — Stew, CEO

Derrick is one of the hardest

working individuals that I know. He gives it 100 percent no matter what

he is doing and he always has a smile on his face. I am not only honored to call him

a co-worker but also a friend. Keep up the good

work, Derrick. I’m proud of you. — Jeff D., Director,

East Meadow

I am amazed how much energy and enthusiasm Derrick brings to his department. He

jumps in on department moves

and works alongside his team.

I am impressed that he always knows his sales numbers, especially the areas

where Farmingdale ranks #1 or #2 in the company. Farmingdale is

lucky to have Derrick on their team.

— Jake T., VP Stores

Derrick was highly recom-mended from the team he had pre-

viously worked with and it

quickly became obvious to us

that his exten-sive retail experi-ence would be a great addition to the Farmingdale team. I was fortunate to work with Derrick since the Farmingdale opening

observing him build his team and his department. He's al-

ways displayed a willingness to share his vast experience and the ability to get things ac-

complished. He has a passion for his job and is a fierce com-petitor always reviewing his

sales and looking for opportu-nity to improve. Derrick's per-sonality leads the managers

bullpen in morale and laughter. Although he started in Gro-cery, I'm confident that with

his abilities he will rise much further up the ladder.

— Joe V., Vice President, Farmingdale/East Meadow

When I first met Derrick on the training van to Yonkers, I knew

he was someone special. His pas-

sion for what he does comes through every day. He is always willing to jump in and help with

anything that is needed throughout the store. He is a

true leader. I am honored to not only be able to work with him

every day, but to call him a friend. Derrick’s future is

bright and I look forward to watching his continued suc-

cess. — Nancy S., Farmingdale Front End Manager

WOW Award 2019

One of the great-est pleasures when I went to

Farmingdale was to have the op-

portunity to meet and work with Derrick.

Derrick is a very hard-working individual and super passionate

about his job. He takes his job to heart; he cares and always

looks for ways to help increase sales or better merchandising opportunities. Derrick is a peo-ple person, always with a great

full smile, exceptional customer service at all times, willing to help anyone no matter which department. I’m personally

lucky to have Derrick as a friend and we are so lucky to have Der-rick as part of the Stew’s fam-

ily. Derrick has passion from the heart and will have a great

future at Stew Leonard’s. — Cristian C., Yonkers VP

t took Einstein so long

to learn to speak (he

didn’t become fluent in

his parents suspected he

His teachers agreed: ac-

cording to legend, when

Einstein’s father asked

his schoolmaster which

profession young Albert

should adopt, the school-

master replied, “It doesn’t

matter; he’ll never make a

success of anything.”

Actually, though,

historians don’t know all

that much about his

childhood. The reason:

Einstein’s memory for

personal things was so

bad that even he couldn’t

remember what happened

to him as a kid. “You are

quite right,” he said when

a friend commented this

was hard to believe. “My

bad memory for personal

things is really quite

astounding.”

Interesting note: Even as

an adult, Einstein’s ge-

recognized. As late as

1910, more than five

years after he published

his famous papers on

statistical mechanics,

quantum mechanics, and

the special theory of rela-

tivity, he was still only an

associate professor at

the University of Zurich

salary wasn’t enough to

live on;

he was

forced

to supple-

ment his

income

with lecture fees and by

taking in student board-

7 A.M. ON THE MORNING OF DECEMBER

7, 1941, radar operators Joseph

Lockhart and George Elliott had just

finished their shift at a radar station on the

island of Oahu, Hawaii. But the truck that was

supposed to pick them up was late, so they

stayed at their consoles a few minutes longer,

and at 7:02 Elliott picked up the biggest blip

either man had ever seen. They tried to call the

control room, but according to John and Claire

Whitcomb in their book Oh Say Can You See, “The

line was dead—the men in the control room had

gone to breakfast.”

Elliott tried the regular phone circuit and got

through to Lieutenant Kermit Tyler, a pilot who was

the only person on duty. “There’s a large number of

planes coming in from the north, three degrees

east.” Lieutenant Tyler was unimpressed. Lockhart

got on the line and tried to convince the lieutenant

that it was important—he had never seen so many

planes on the screen. “Well, don’t worry about

it,” Tyler finally said. At 7:45 a.m. the

truck came, and the two

privates shut down the

station and left. At

7:55 a.m. the first

bombs fell on Pearl

Harbor.

hen I was studying at UCONN, I was majoring in Dairy Manufacturing. Each student had to take turns managing the university’s dairy plant. One morning during my turn to manage

the dairy, an entire tank load of milk from the farm was delivered and pumped into our huge holding tank.

The next morning when we started operations, we discovered that the holding tank was completely empty.

The valve at the bottom of the tank had been left open by one of the plant workers the night before.

The entire dairy supply of fresh milk which had been pumped into the top of the tank had flowed right out the open valve at the bottom of the tank and went down the drain.

I went running to Professor Dowd’s office in a panic; “Welcome to management, Mr. Leonard,” Professor Dowd said. “Don’t expect me to solve your problem. You are the plant manager this week. You have to handle it yourself and will be graded on your decision.”

The next day in class after discussing the problem and the financial loss to the university, Professor Dowd announced that there would be a quiz and that it would contain only one question…” What would you do if you were the plant manager when this happened?”

Everyone in the class (including me) agreed that the answer was easy… fire the plant employee who forgot to close the valve.

When Professor Dowd looked at our answers he said, “You all get a zero!”

Here’s the reason why. Instead of firing people, you as a good manager should sit down with him and have a serious talk. Explain the cost and the impact and together develop a checklist so that this will never happen again. Chances are the fellow who made the mistake feels worse than you do. In the end, you will end up with a more conscientious employee who will return your loyalty tenfold.

The point is…

WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED YOURSELF.
