We chose to retire in Gettysburg for many reasons: its semi-nal historic significance, proximity to our children and grand-children, a college town with many cultural offerings and thememories of meeting here 40 years ago as undergraduatecollege students. Healthy lifestyle options, like the town’swalkability, its health care system and the YWCA were alsomajor considerations. After more than three decades in a career with the YWCA’scounterpart, the YMCA, we have seen many not-for-profitcommunity centers all across the country. Gettysburg is amost fortunate town to have the caliber YW it does. The facili-ties are exceptionally well-maintained and amply equipped, and the staff members are courteous, friendly and helpful. We joined initially for the fitness center and wellness classes, and to meet and make friends in our new community. We also believe in the greater work and purpose of theYWCA, and support it with a charitable contribution. A centraltenet of the YW’s mission, that it serves all regardless of fi-nancial condition, makes the availability of YW services andprograms a great equalizer in our community. We revel in thewonderful melting pot the YW is, where folks of all ages, reli-gions, races and incomes are welcomed into an extendedfamily of people striving to improve their lives. The YW’s workis not merely transactional, but transformational.A great rhetorical question to ask is “What if we awoke onemorning and there was no YWCA in Gettysburg?” Thousands

of us would be without critically needed health, childcare, recreation and other vitally important services. Our communitywould be diminished and poorer in spirit. We purchased amembership for our own personal wellness and relationshipneeds, but we donate to the YWCA for the broader role itplays in making our region a better place to live – for every-one. We believe the Gettysburg YWCA is extremely worthy ofgenerous charitable support; we hope you will too.

Leslie Horneman

My fitness journey began on a bench in the hallway at the YWCA. I sat on that benchand watched my little girl do Zumba for at least six months, it may have been a year.I did nothing but sit in my own little world. All the instructors tried to get me in therewith her, but I was content with being that woman on the bench that many walked byand did not notice. There are defining moments in our lives, and what we do withthem is up to us. That moment came to me when Allison Kelley walked up to me andsaid “hey, your granddaughter is doing a great job in there!” Nothing but smiles forthis statement now, because now this "mom" can run in to town with Allison and backto the YW for a class. Another one of those moments was when I was hanging out atthe YW waiting for Zumba to start and the Rebert sisters were ready to take a HIITclass with the very talented AmyBeth Hodges. They once again questioned me,“Why are you on the bench? Come take this class with us.” You guessed it, I did andit pushed me that much further into a healthy lifestyle. I am sharing all this and beingso transparent because if you are at that place on a bench somewhere, or you havejust begun and may be feeling frustrated, I encourage you to not give up! I have ayoung one to whom I want to pass along an example of a healthy lifestyle. Mybiggest changing point and why I think this will stick is I finally realized there is no ar-rival date. I will never arrive! Sure there are goals along the way. The numbers onthe scale start looking better. The most important “ah ha” moment was learning it is alifestyle! I don't share for a “that a girl,” I share in case someone may be sitting onthat bench like I was and is not content with going unnoticed anymore. There is aconfidence and a jump in your step when you are feeling good and taking the time tocare for yourself. The benefits outweigh the cons, and I plan to be around and to nothave to say no to any activity my 10-year-old may want me to participate in. I havemade many new friends along this journey. It was a year in October since I got offthat bench.
