If your driveway orsidewalk is beginningto crumble, here aresome tips on making
the fix
Sooner or later most driveways and sidewalks will need repairs,
especially in spring. • “During the winter months, the freeze-thaw
cycles that can occur lift walkways and driveways and ice can form in ex-
pansion joints, actually pulling the material apart,” explained Lou Manfredini, Ace
Hardware’s national home expert. • Also to blame can be ice-melt products. •
“Particularly, rock salt can really break apart the top layer of concrete and cause
additional damage,” he said. • Fortunately, these common problems are not of-
ten serious and can usually be fixed relatively easily.
BY MELISSA ERICKSON
WHEN TO DIYFrom a do-it-yourself homeowner
point-of-view, the best way to deal withdriveway cracks is to avoid them in thefirst place. Seal your driveway once ayear. If you see cracks forming, fillthem immediately before the conditionworsens.Homeowners can fix smaller cracks
themselves, Manfredini said: “If thesurface is asphalt, cracks can either berepaired with a driveway tar in a caulktube or a pre-mixed concrete patch.”With either material, it’s important
to clean the cracks of any loose materi-al and ensure they are dry before ap-plying patching material. If you’re tackling the job yourself, be
sure to read any safety precautions onthe products you’re using. Some basic
tools you’re likely to need include gog-gles and gloves, a hammer, broom, wire brush, screwdriver, pointed trow-el and air compressor.
WHEN TO GET HELPWhen to call in a professional really
depends on your level of comfort,Manfredini said. “Cracks are easy. Holes can take a lit-
tle more work, but homeowners can dosome of this themselves. “The trick with patching holes is to
get enough material in there to standup to the abuse the surface receives. Itstarts with actually making the holebigger and deeper.”

WHO’S RESPONSIBLE?Well-maintained sidewalks bring
benefits to homeowners and neigh-borhoods, such as increased proper-ty values, reduced crime, enhancedsense of community and improvedhealth for people who walk. But when the sidewalk falls into dis-
repair, who is responsible? Whileeveryone uses your sidewalk, somecities assign responsibility for sidewalkupkeep to the adjacent homeowner. “It’s a local issue, and residents
should contact their local publicworks department,” said DougHecox, a public affairs officer withthe Federal Highway Administration. In many cities funding is available
to rebuild sidewalks, with the worstsidewalks receiving priority. Munic-ipalities sometimes offer to sharethe cost of sidewalk repair withhomeowners.Call your public works department
or city hall for information.Insurance companies like to limit
their liability in a lawsuit resultingfrom a damaged sidewalk, so theymay provide financial assistance.
Compost can improve soil struc-ture and texture and improve the
soil's capacity to hold water. Eco-conscious green-thumbers love com-post because it's all-natural, whilecost-conscious homeowners likecompost because they can improvetheir lawn and garden without spend-ing a dime. Adding compost im-proves soil fertility and can stimulatehealthy root development, enablinglawns and gardens to better with-stand potentially harsh weather, suchas summer heat waves or windy falland winter afternoons. Compost is effective because it provides food for mi-croorganisms that contribute to overall soil health. When these microorgan-isms are fed, they produce phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen. As a result, homeowners save money because they do not need to purchase potentiallycostly soil amendments to maintain healthy soil. When making compost, homeowners can use a host of ingredients they likely already have lyingaround the house. Dead houseplants, for instance, can be effective compostingredients as long as the plants were not thorny or riddled with disease.Homeowners with pet rabbits, or gerbils, or hamsters can even add these ani-mals' manure to their compost. When doing so, include the wood or paperbedding from the animal's crate. Another potentially valuable compost ingre-dient is vegetable scraps, such as carrot peelings, or even eggshells. Whenadding these items, be sure to bury them in the compost pile so they don't at-tract animals.

The winds and snowfalls of 2011may have left a swath of damagedroofs in their wake, even if there areno telltale signs of leakage on ahome’s interior walls and ceiling. Your roof could have a one-time
leak, caused strictly by the blowingsnow, says Tom Bollnow, senior di-rector of technical services for theNational Roofing Contractors Associ-ation in Rosemont, Ill. Other damagecould have been caused by icedamming, which occurs when snowmelts and ice builds up on the roof. The good news is, many repairs in
these cases are simple, such as seal-ing a damaged area, provided the
roofing shingles aren’t too old (morethan 15 or 20 years) and the damagehasn’t gone untended for too long.Bollnow recommends waiting un-
til spring to check for roof damage, when the threat of snow is over andthe ground is firmer. One way to help prevent winter
winds from wreaking havoc on yourroof is to properly maintain it be-fore a blizzard blows in. Bollnowsays maintenance should be donelate in the fall, after all the leavesand debris from trees has fallen.“Clean debris such as seedlings
and limbs from the roof and gut-ters. Make sure the downspouts areopen,” he says.
GET ON TOP OF
ROOF DAMAGE
If wind and snow hurt your home, spring is the time to check it out • Bollnow recommends keeping
good records of snow events. “It willhelp a lot because sometimes wecan’t see any damage right away,”he says.
• You might be able to check theroof by using a pair of binocularsfrom across the street. If you needto get on the roof, only do so if youare comfortable with a ladder; oth-erwise, Bollnow recommends hiringa professional roofer. Make sure theground is not wet and soggy, whichcould make the ladder slip.
• Check gutters and downspoutsfor ice damage.
• Look at the accessories, such asthe metal around the chimney andvent covers, to see if roofing shinglesare bunched up around them, a signthat water could be getting in, hesays.
• Look for worn and cracked roofingmaterials that show signs of buck-ling; they may need to be repairedor replaced, Bollnow says.
• Check corner areas on the roof, such as by dormers, the chimney, skylights and vents, for signs ofwear and loose materials. Theseareas will let water in the house ifdamaged, Bollnow says.
•If you have a roofer do the inspec-tion and/or provide the work, makesure he or she is licensed and has apermit in the community to dobusiness, that they are insured andhave references, according to NRCArecommendations. Bollnow saysyou might want to see if the compa-ny has an office building, althoughhe adds some good roofing con-tractors work out of their homes.

After a punishing winter of high wind and heavy snow, spring is agreat time to inspect key parts of yourhome inside and out. Find potentialproblems now, and you could get themunder control before April showers bringmore damage. “Winter intrudes on yourliving space,” says Don Vandervort, homeimprovement expert at HomeTips.com.He offered these tips for homeowners eager to get ready for warmer weatherand block more of nature’s unwanted advances.
Close up your furnaceand fireplace
When you’re reasonably sure you won’tneed them anymore, you can close offyour fireplace and put your furnace to rest.
For furnacesRemove the old filter, vacuum the filtercompartment, then replace with a newone. Vacuum dust from the outside ofthe furnace and its surroundings.
For wood-burning fireplacesmake sure any fire is completely out andthe ashes are cold. Clean the fireplaceand shut the damper. Well-fitted glassdoors in front of the fireplace can makea big difference in keeping the cool air inwhen you’re air-conditioning your home.
For gas-burning fireplacesUse caution. It is critical to leave thedamper at least partially open at alltimes because these fireplaces producecarbon monoxide. Consult your owner’smanual.

Clean and cut back vegetation from the house.Keep wood mulch away from the foundation because it can be an invitation to termites.
Remove storm windows and storm door panels, and put up the screens. If your screen has a smallhole, patch it. Replace screens with large holes.
DONE
Remove leaves and debris from gutters and down-spouts. Be sure gutters are attached to the house, and that downspouts drain away from the foundation.
Inspect caulking along windows. If it became dam-aged during the winter, scrape it out and replace it.
Before turning on your air conditioner, change itsfilter. Clean the outdoor compressor or have thecompressor professionally inspected and cleaned.
If you don’t already have one, spring is a fine timeto install a programmable thermostat. Your air conditioner use less energy.

The subdued palettes and simple choices of home decor associ-
ated with the struggling economy of the last few years is
changing, with homeowners beginning to opt for bright, de-
tailed and eco-friendly items instead of just plain and simple
home fashions. Designers predict spring trends of high-energy colors and
meticulously detailed accents in combination with classic neutrals that
freshen up rooms and bring them back to life — an in-home metaphor for
what we all anticipate on the economic front. Read on for expert thoughts
on how to take your home from drab to fab.
LIGHT & BRIGHTBold colors and natural materials are the look ofspring
Colorful details are becoming popularagain, says interior designer JoanKaufman. “Simple and clean lines arestill in,” Kaufman says. “They’re justnot plain anymore.”

Times are changing when it comesto interior design, and folks desire afresh look for their indoor land-scapes. “I am seeing that people are ready for
a change, ready for some energy andlife,” says interior designer Joan Kauf-man, project director of Interior Plan-ning in Naperville, Ill. “Everyone hasbeen hanging back, but now they areadding more details.” Kaufman’s clients are weaving this
detail throughout their designs by
adding trims to window treatmentsand upholstery pieces or placing con-trasting fabrics on the same item, like adining room chair. Finding simple ways to increase
detail beyond the clean and simplelines that have been popular for solong is a sure way to freshen up dat-ed decor. “Simple and clean lines are still in,”
Kaufman says. “They’re just not plainanymore.”

Natural and eco-friendly finds forthe home are still a top priority formany clients, says Kaufman, whocontinues to see more retailers offer“green” options, with many sellingthem exclusively. “Accessory furniture pieces made
from natural materials can be usedas focus pieces,” says Kaufman.
“These are a lot of fun, and peoplearen’t afraid to use them.” Look for foyer pieces or accent fur-
niture in natural fibers from one ofKaufman’s favorite wholesalers, Ibo-lili. She also recommends bringingnatural materials in with mirrorsand framing, to tie a look together.
Au natural
Furniture made from natural materials, such as these accent tablesfrom Ibolili, can be the focus of a room.

With budget still a major consider-ation for many, there are severalmethods that can be implemented tofreshen up a space for the yearahead. Kaufman recommends paint as the
quickest way to make a big impact. She then suggests adding new pil-lows, rugs or a well-chosen piece ofartwork. Sometimes, a room makeover in-
volves dealing with dated furniture
that cannot be replaced. When thishappens, Kaufman suggests custom-made slipcovers. “I have one client who has two
sets for her dining room chairs,”says Kaufmann. “She changes themout seasonally, or sometimes usesthem just at the ends of the table. She always has lots of fun with tablerunners or accessories that keep herroom looking fresh.”
Quick makeover
An affordable makeover in a dining room is a simple as a using anotherchair style at each end of the table, says interior designer Joan Kaufman.
When it comes to color, bright isall the rage. Kaufman has wit-nessed her clients trend towardchoosing spring greens, teals andaquas, even bright pinks and or-anges to intermix with the timelessneutrals of browns and grays. Add these pops of color through
pillows or throws, rugs or windowtreatments, even accessories to cat-apult your interior into 2011.
