This past Winter quarter was the busiest in our history. We also anticipate a very heavy Spring quarter. Traditionally, Spring is the busiest season for our Electronic Data Archive. The Archive continues to grow and change rapidly. Be- cause the College of Arts and Sciences has helped us replace our aging, Y2K-noncompliant Unix machine with a more modern NT server (Thank you, Deans Hodge and Bernstein!), we will be redesigning and moving the archive to this new machine. We will im- prove access to the data and hope to provide entry right to the office desk- tops of our most active users. This Newsletter is there- fore an Archive Special. We are sending unsolic- ited copies to many fac- ulty and administrators. We are asking for your input on ways we can improve the Archive. We have listed the titles of our present collection in this issue to make sure that the faculty at the UW who might use the data are familiar with its components. It is frustrating that we had 45 gi- gabytes of data from the CSSCR Data Archive on our Web Page two years before the UW even had a Web Page, yet many people still do not know of our 26- year-old Archive! Included in this Newsletter is a small questionnaire about the Archive that we would appreciate if you would fill out and return to us. Thanks! We are also pleased to announce that the Student TechFee Committee has awarded us another $114,000 grant. We will be installing the new comput- ers as soon as we can make all the arrangements and purchases. Thank you, Student TechFee Committee! We are replacing our existing printers this quarter with faster, more dependable printers and putting a charg- ing mechanism in place. The print costs last quarter were four times larger than usual. We hope to dupli- cate the Husky Card readers that the U-Wired sites have implemented. This will allow us to offer color printing for the first time. We will be charging for all printing at CSSCR after these readers are in place. The last thing we want to do is increase the costs of being a student here at the UW, but we have no choice. Once the central sites started charging we had a dramatic increase in people who just dropped in to get a free copy of their file printed. From the Director

Welcome to Spring Quarter! This past Winter quarter was the busiest in our history. We also anticipate a very heavy Spring quarter. Traditionally, Spring is the busiest season for our Electronic Data Archive. The Archive continues to grow and change rapidly. Be-cause the College of Arts and Sciences has helped us replace our aging, Y2K-noncompliant Unix machine with a more modern NT server (Thank you, Deans Hodge and Bernstein!), we will be redesigning and moving the archive to this new machine. We will im-prove access to the data and hope to provide entry right to the office desk-tops of our most active users.

This Newsletter is there-fore an Archive Special. We are sending unsolic-ited copies to many fac-ulty and administrators. We are asking for your input on ways we can improve the Archive. We have listed the titles of our present collection in this issue to make sure that the faculty at the UW who might use the data are familiar with its components. It is frustrating that we had 45 gi-gabytes of data from the CSSCR Data Archive on our Web Page two years before the UW even had a Web Page, yet many people still do not know of our 26-year-old Archive!

Included in this Newsletter is a small questionnaire about the Archive that we would appreciate if you would fill out and return to us. Thanks!

We are also pleased to announce that the Student TechFee Committee has awarded us another $114,000 grant. We will be installing the new comput-ers as soon as we can make all the arrangements and purchases. Thank you, Student TechFee Committee!

We are replacing our existing printers this quarter with faster, more dependable printers and putting a charg-ing mechanism in place. The print costs last quarter were four times larger than usual. We hope to dupli-cate the Husky Card readers that the U-Wired sites have implemented. This will allow us to offer color printing for the first time. Beginning Stata

Stata is a statistical package on almost all computer plat-forms including PC, Mac, and Unix. In this class, we will discuss the user interface and how a beginner can start to use it. We'll look at: importing and exporting data, syntax commands, graphics plotting and regression analysis.Instructor: Kyongwook ChoiDate: Monday, April 12Lecture: 1:00

Place: Savery 149

Introduction to SAS

tWe will talk about SAS (Statistical Analysis System) for Windows and the SAS procedures DATA and PROC. A demonstration of the Display Manager System will in-clude temporary data sets, importing external raw data files, SAS data files using the DATA step, and how to print data, draw plots and run regressions.Instructor: Jaechul ChangDate: Monday, April 12Time: 10:00

Beginning Mapping (focus on ArcView)

Learn how to map geographic data using Excel (simple) and Arcview (more advanced). This course will introduce you to geocoded data, thematic mapping, copying and pasting maps to your documents, managing files, and how to decide which software to use. It will emphasize a quick-start, hands-on approach to making a map with Arc-view. You should have a basic understanding of Excel. Students will create a map during the class.Instructor: Deron FergusonDate: Monday, April 19Lecture: 12:30

Introduction to MATLAB

MATLAB is an interactive system whose basic data ele-ment is an array that does not require dimensioning. This allows you to solve many technical computing problems, especially those with matrix and vector formulations. This class will cover basic operations of MATLAB and vector/matrix algebra using MATLAB.Also, I will introduce MATLAB graphing and program-ming. Basic knowledge of linear algebra is required for the class.Instructor: Yi-Chi ChenDate: Tuesday, April 20Time: 1:30

The CSSCR Data ArchiveThe data archive at CSSCR includes a large collection of machine-readable files for more than 1000 domestic and interna-tional studies related to social sciences and humanities. We also keep extensive holdings of Economic Time Series and U.S. Census Data. Most of our data come either from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) of which UW is a member, or federal and state government agencies. We share a subscription with the Business School to the on-line information service Datastream. We also offer access to the Haver Analytics Databases for US and foreign economic sta-tistics. Our data are primarily available to UW faculty and students. Some Census data are available to anyone. The data at CSSCR are maintained in different formats and media. Each data set is composed of a series of different types of files including data files, SPSS or SAS data definition statements, codebooks and data dictionaries. Most data files are kept in ASCII format, some are also available in SPSS or SAS format. The CSSCR consultants can offer help in converting data files into a specific format you prefer and provide consulting in using statistical software. The majority of our data information is accessible through our CenterÕs home page from the UW computer network at: http://augustus.csscr.augustus.washington.edu/archive1.html. Our web archive is divided into 3 categories: ICPSR resourc-es, Census resources and a list of CDROM based data. You can search data information by index of study titles, read and print the abstract of each ICPSR study, and can save downloadable data or documents to your PC or disks. Some of our data are stored on tape or CDROM, which you can get access by contacting the Data Archivist (Ning Gu, Archivist, phone: 543-8110, email: [email protected]). The Archivist can also provide assistance in transferring data and data extraction from large files. The Archivist can help you in identifying data files that meet your research or educational needs, whether the data is part of the CSSCR archive or available elsewhere. If you are not sure of what data is available, the Archivist can show you how to search the CSSCR on-line archive to locate data files and documentation. For each data set in our archive, a printed code-book is maintained in our main office. It contains detailed information about the data such as a full description of the study, sampling methods, technical information about the data structure, list of variables, variable descriptions, and the text of the questionnaire and possible responses.

On the following pages you will find the lists of studies/data on our archive.
