For 30 years GRDC has been dedicated to sustaining and improving Grandmont Rosedale. We have renovated and resold more than 115 previously vacant homes, and renovated seven commercial buildings. GRDC has provided home repair loans and grants to more than 150 homeowners. GRDC created the Vacant Property Task Force and the Crime Prevention Task Force,

resident-led initiatives that maintain abandoned homes, and spread the word about crime prevention strategies in cooperation with local police. GRDC has repurposed over 16 vacant lots, and renovated seven neighborhood parks and school playgrounds. GRDC opened the Grand River WorkPlace, the first neighborhood co-working space in Detroit, and this year GRDC

celebrates the 15th year of our Northwest Detroit Farmers’ Market. These many and various initiatives have been funded and directed by Grandmont Rosedale residents and our funders. GRDC’s Crime Prevention Task Force knows that a terrific way to increase awareness of crime prevention strategies while also letting our seniors know that they are valued members of the community is to throw them a party! More than 100 seniors attended the December Senior Luncheon where

they shared a delicious lunch, did some chair yoga, even hustled a little, and, most importantly, got to know other people in their community. Engagement with their community not only makes seniors safer, it makes them and their communities healthier. Plans for a spring senior luncheon are underway.

More than 300 attended the 13th Annual Grandmont Rosedale Neighborhood Open House on May 5. Attendees toured 10 homes, learned about the many

community amenities, and received information on home loan options and tax abatement. This annual event is a terrific opportunity for Grandmont Rosedale to show off its beautiful homes, growing business community, many neighborhood organizations, and our dedication to our community. This collaborative event involved volunteer residents,

business owners, and sponsors: GRDC, Robinson Realty and Management Group, Fifth Third Bank, Huntington Bank, and PNC Bank. The visitors and potential home buyers were warmly welcomed by the Grandmont Rosedale community who invited visitors to think of Grandmont Rosedale as “A Place Where You Belong.”

Grandmont Rosedale Celebrates Detroit Partnership Day

GRDC and MSU Collaborate for Resident Journalism

GRDC Partners with Develop Detroit to Renovate Vacant Homes

In partnership with Develop Detroit, GRDC renovated two formerly vacant houses into beautiful, move-in ready homes. Both homes are in communities neighboring Grandmont Rosedale. The renovations to these homes included everything from the reconstruction of interior walls that were damaged from years of exposure to rain and snow in one, to the installation of quartz kitchen counters in the other. This collaboration is the first of its kind for GRDC, but hopefully not the last. The Grandmont Rosedale community is strengthened when the communities around it stabilize, and GRDC is happy to work with other organizations to this end. 17353 Fielding

On Saturday, April 13 dozens of Grandmont Rosedale resident volunteers joined dozens of University of Michigan student-volunteers at

GRDC and Michigan State University’s Journalism Department were awarded a Knights Foundation Grant to offer training to Detroit residents who want to capture the stories of their neighborhood in professional quality video. This exciting opportunity offers residents from Detroit communities five weeks of professional instruction at various community hubs throughout Detroit, with a showcase at the end of training. The residents’ community organization will be able to keep the equipment (smartphone grip and microphone), so that they and others will be able to continue to document their neighborhood stories. This initiative enables residents of Detroit communities to tell their own stories, in their own way. These classes will also foster communication among Detroit communities, building a stronger Detroit.

several locations throughout Grandmont Rosedale to rake, sweep, pick up litter, and spread mulch. Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood associations register specific sites, such as parks or alleys that could use some extra attention and UM students and residents are then given the supplies to get to work. DP Day is about more than beautification, though. The annual event is a great opportunity for Grandmont Rosedale to show off its dedication to community to people who may come from far outside Grandmont Rosedale. For the UM students, it’s a terrific chance to see community dedication in action.

With the objective to make Grandmont Rosedale more walkable and bikeable, as well as slowing traffic, changes to Grand River will include more crosswalks and bike lanes. According to GRDC Executive Director, Sherita Smith, working with Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has been “great. They have been very responsive to community input.” MDOT has met with residents and business owners several times to hear their input about the changes they would like to see along Grand River. Several Community Meetings designed specifically to address the concerns of the businesses along Grand River were held at the Grand River WorkPlace.

GRANDMONT ROSEDALE TO BE SITE OF DESIGN COMPETITION WINNER

Grandmont Rosedale will be a site of the Design Core Detroit Detroit City of Design Competition winner. This international competition for designers

in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Creative Cities Network invites design solutions for Detroit neighborhoods that address safety and walkability. “Having one of the winning installations here will be another impactful piece toward our vision for restoring Grand River,” says Sherita.

Mixed Use Development Project Coming in 2020

GRDC acquired the IHOP building, 19505 Grand River, and the accompanying parking lot and is moving into the pre-development phase of building a mixed-use development that will include both commercial and residential opportunities. The IHOP building will be torn down and a 2 -3 story sustainable

building will be built. This mixed-use building is in response to the community need for more commercial space and an option for apartment living. This exciting development will be a welcome, long awaited improvement to the Grandmont Rosedale community.

GRDC received grants from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the Ford Fund for Placemaking Projects for Grandmont Rosedale. These resident-lead beautification projects may involve the installation of benches at one of Grandmont Rosedale’s parks, some public art, planting flowers, or installing bollards at a vacant lot to prevent dumping. Over the next several months, keep your eye out for improvements to our neighborhoods, and let GRDC’s Community Engagement Manager Kitty Yarbrough know that you’d like to help out! This past year has seen a dedicated GRDC board member step down, and a couple of new, enthusiastic members step up. Marsha Bruhn joined the GRDC board in 2007 because she “considered GRDC such an asset to the neighborhoods and to the neighbors.” After 12 years of service to GRDC and the Grandmont Rosedale community, Marsha has stepped down. Marsha leaves the legacy of organizing the increasingly well-attended Neighborhood Open House. Her commitment

to community has made Grandmont Rosedale a welcoming place for new residents to call home.

New to the board are Desirae Tolbert and John Bry. Desirae looks forward to “offering a different

perspective – innovation, new thinking, and new angles,” and is interested in taking a look at how the public spaces in Grandmont Rosedale are used as well as developing mentorship programs to keep the community engagement sustainable for her son’s generation and beyond. John is “excited to be in on the ground floor as GRDC thinks about its 30th year.” He has a great deal of historic preservation experience to bring, and is looking forward to “helping GRDC with its strategic goals.” With such a committed team of community members, GRDC’s future indeed looks bright.

New Green Parking Lot and Rain Garden Coming to Grand River!

As part of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department’s Green Stormwater Infrastructure Plan, GRDC will be adding further green infrastructure to Grandmont Rosedale’s business community. GRDC, with support from Motor City Re-Store, DWSD, and the University of Detroit Mercy, will be resurfacing the parking lot and planting a rain garden at 19540 Grand River. The storm water run-off from the GRDC-owned buildings and Universal Liquor will be diverted to the rain garden rather than running to the sewer system. This is a welcome improvement for a greener, more sustainable commercial community.

Since May of 2018, GRDC has hosted Property Tax Exemption Application Workshops every second Wednesday from 10 am – 3 pm at the GRDC offices, 19800 Grand River. This Neighbor to Neighbor: PTE Workshop initiative is an effort to help keep families in their homes. Attendees receive free help completing the property tax exemption application. Funded by a grant from Quicken Loans, these workshops will run through December 2019. The next PTE Workshops will be on Wednesday, June 12. A New Shop Pops Up at the Grand River WorkPlace

Ongoing Programming at the Grand River WorkPlace Supports Small Business and Draws New Members

The First Grand River WorkPlace Member Breakfast, A Great Success!

Grand River WorkPlace members were treated to the first Member Breakfast last December. Economic Development Specialist BrieAnn Bell thought a breakfast would be a great way for the members to get to know one another and to perhaps share their expertise with one another. The WorkPlace is a busy place with members present at different times. According to BrieAnn, the breakfast “provided an opportunity for the members meet one another and to relax and enjoy a delicious breakfast catered by former WorkPlace member and Grandmont Rosedale business River Bistro.” Several members attended the breakfast and look forward to the next WorkPlace get together.

The new pop-up shop in the Grand River WorkPlace is Ariya’s Apparel and Accessories. Owner Akeya Muhammad offers “modern and modest ready-to-wear and custom-designed clothing for women.” There is a beautiful and wide selection of items, from handbags to dresses, skirts to jewelry, Ariya’s Apparel and Accessories “is stylish while staying modest.” Previously an online business, Akeya won a TechTown pitch contest last year and has been looking for a brick and mortar presence. Akeya believes that the Grand River WorkPlace, 19120 Grand River, is the perfect spot for her growing business. “This all happened in divine order, and I’m supposed to be here now,” she says. Economic

On a monthly basis, the Grand River WorkPlace offers small business owners a wide variety of support services. CEED Lending is at the WorkPlace offering loans to existing and new businesses, TechTown offers one-on-one counselling on legal matters pertaining to small business, SCORE Detroit offers one-on-one mentoring for small business owners, and FoodLab Detroit regularly offers

classes at the WorkPlace, as does ProsperUs Detroit who conducts their popular Boot Camp Entrepreneur Training course.

The 23 small businesses that are currently members at the WorkPlace take advantage of the convenience of the conference rooms, 24-hour access, available printing services and mailboxes, and the potential for collaboration with the other WorkPlace members. Norwest Gallery of Art Calls Grandmont Rosedale its Permanent Home

It would be hard to find someone more familiar with Grandmont Rosedale than BrieAnn Bell. BrieAnn grew up in Minock Park and currently lives in North Rosedale Park. From playing softball in the Rosedale Grandmont Little League, to carpooling to Detroit Open School with Grandmont Rosedale neighbors, you could say BrieAnn grew up understanding the value of community. BrieAnn is the perfect fit as GRDC’s new Economic Development Specialist.

BRIEANN’S ROLE AS THE WORKPLACE MANAGER

As the Economic Development Specialist, BrieAnn’s focus is on enhancing the commercial community in Grandmont Rosedale. The WorkPlace is not just an economical office space for new and growing businesses, it also offers numerous services and workshops that directly address the needs of small business. Fostering connections with small business owners who are looking for a vibrant community that will support their business is what BrieAnn is most passionate about. “All areas of District 1 have been touched by GRDC. My aim is to

create a greater, more complete connection with the wider business community.”

A few years ago, when BrieAnn and her husband Michael were looking at houses, they didn’t just look in Grandmont Rosedale. As they looked, they realized that they weren’t just looking for a house, they were looking for a community. BrieAnn sees her position with GRDC as an opportunity to “enhance what we have here. The residents own this neighborhood and businesses see that.” GRDC is lucky to have BrieAnn as an employee, and Grandmont Rosedale is lucky to have her as a neighbor.

Northwest Detroit Farmers’ Market Begins its 15th Season

Opening Day for the 15th season of GRDC’s Northwest Farmers’ Market is Thursday, June 6! The Market runs every Thursday through early October from 3 – 7 pm at the North Rosedale Park Community House, 18445 Scarsdale. Many familiar and favorite vendors will be returning this season, and there will also be several new vendors. This year, our Market has been chosen to be on the advisory board of the Detroit Community Markets. The NWDFM is the third busiest Market of the Detroit Community Markets and the

oldest continuously running Market. Be sure to stop by this season. You’ll find local, fresh produce, fresh eggs, vegan snacks, fresh pies, soup, some new food trucks, and a whole lot of neighbors who’d love to see you at the Market. A little over a year ago, GRDC renovated the commercial space at 19556 Grand River. This space, initially named the Grand River Annex, was created in response to the Grandmont Rosedale business community’s request for a flexible cultural space where they could hold special events and pop-ups that they could not host in their stores. Quickly, the Annex became the site for author readings, dinner pop-ups and more.

Norwest Gallery of Art curator Asia Hamilton thought the Annex would be a great location for her to have a pop-up art gallery. “Dedicated to contemporary art with a curatorial focus on African and African-American art,” the success of the initial installation lead to a new

installation each month, which inspired more and more people to come to the gallery and to Grandmont Rosedale for the first time. After six months of curating increasingly popular openings and exhibitions, Asia Hamilton decided to become a permanent tenant. GRDC is thrilled that the Annex has become the Norwest Gallery of Art, Grandmont Rosedale’s first art gallery. News Around the NeighborhoodNEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY MEETING

The next Neighborhood Safety Meeting will be on Thursday, June 27 at 6:30 pm at the North Rosedale Park Community House, 18445 Scarsdale. The Neighborhood Safety Meetings are organized by GRDC’s Crime Prevention Task Force, and an effective way to be involved with local law enforcement officers.
