Spring Term Newsletter 2015 KEY DIARY DATES Welcome back! I trust you have had a good break over the festive period and that you are ready for an exciting new year of music making! At least there are a few months until we start rehearsing Christmas carols again, although I have to confess I did attend a Christmas 2015 planning meeting yesterday! There is a multitude of exciting musical events, workshops and concerts for schools, academies and partners to get involved with this term. In fact, there are more events and musical opportunities than I can remember in a spring term and I hope you will take full advantage of the many opportunities on offer. You will find key dates for your diaries in the right-hand column. Remember to ‘like’ Portsmouth Music Hub on Facebook and follow us on twitter so that you can keep up to date with events as they happen. If you have any feedback or suggestions, please contact me. I look forward to making music with many of you and your students in the forthcoming months. Please note: The Music Service SLA (Service Level Agreement) will be e-mailed to schools next week. KEY DIARY DATES Welcome back!

These need to be returned to the Music Service by

March 31st 2015.

Best wishes,

SOUNDSATIONAL!

CONCERT IN MEMORY OF ALISON

SPITTLES The Music Service organised a special concert in memory of Alison Spittles, in December which was attended by her family and the musical was narrated by her mum.

Children from Goldsmith Infants, Cottage Grove Primary, Westover Primary, Southsea Infants and Meon Infants performed at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Southsea. The church was packed and we raised over £700 for Rowans Hospice.

Two of the Hub's Rock Bands took part in an exciting day at Winchester University at the end of term. The Bands worked with students to find out about sound, lighting, stage presence and plenty more besides! The gig at the end of the day was an excellent tribute to the hard work of all the bands and the event organisers, Stu and Seb Brewer from Portsmouth Music Service. There are some more exciting Rock Band gigs planned next year including another day at Winchester University and a gig at the Wedgewood Rooms in the Summer.

Here is the first regular slot presenting IT resources available on the web. The focus for Spring is Musical Elements with a focus on music notation.

SFS Kids – The Education Site of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra: www.sfskids.org/ This site has just recently been updated. Try Musical Skies to look at musical textures and explore mood or try Perform to explore pitch using a range of instruments. If you click on looking for SFS Classic, a tab just below the main window, you can get access to the Music Lab. Great activities to explore all the Musical Elements. The Tempo Activity is great for KS1 and lower KS2 you as you make the drummer work up a sweat playing at increasingly higher tempos.

Counting Music by Phil and David Tulga: http://www.philtulga.com/counter.html This is your first stop for teaching rhythm notation. The rhythm program is the first activity that comes up when you log onto the site. It’s a very simple drop and drag program for teaching simple rhythm notation which can be played back in an interesting way by pressing the play button. Press the tab for Activities and then Maths and Science Activities and you open up to a bright colourful word of interactive games for teaching the Musical Elements at KS1/2.

IT RESOURCES FOR KS1 AND KS2

CREATE! AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY

FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS

Portsmouth Music Hub is launching an exciting initiative called 'Create!', a programme which aims to support budding young composers. The first stage of the programme is a competition for students in KS2, 3 and 4 to compose a piece of instrumental music. The best composers will be given the opportunity for their compositions to be performed at a special concert. Their pieces will also be published on the Portsmouth Music Hub website. In addition, one composer will be awarded a 'Composer in Residence' position with one of Portsmouth Music Hub's ensembles, where they will receive advice and support in writing a piece for the ensemble to perform in their end of year concert in the Summer Term.

Please encourage students to participate in this exciting competition. Entries should be in the format of a score and a recording, and should be sent to [email protected] at Portsmouth

Music Hub by Friday 13 March 2015.

Ten Pieces is an exciting new initiative for primary schools, led by BBC Learning and the BBC Performing Groups, focusing on classical music and creativity.

Announcing a special brand new resource - Ten Pieces Guide to the Orchestra Ebook which is available as a free download for iPad, Android and Kindle devices. It’s a video-rich, interactive guide to the orchestra with five games. Barney Harwood from Blue Peter introduces the families of instruments, and professional musicians from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales explain how their instruments work. .

How to get involved To find out how your school can get involved visit bbc.co.uk/tenpieces, where you can sign up for the newsletter and find your local Ten Pieces Champion who may be able to help you develop the project in your school.

We are hoping to get involved with a very exciting initiative on June 5th with students performing Anna Meredith’s body percussion piece “Hands Free”. This will be subject to all sorts of liaison and arrangements and also subject to funding. In the meantime, do put the date in your diary - you will not want to miss out!
