INFORMATION LITERACY PROGRAM SPRING 2014    The  Leeward  CC  Library  and  the  Language  Arts  Division  partner  to  develop  the  information  literacy  skills  of  students  enrolled  in  ENG  100,  ENG  24,  ENG  22,  and  some  ESL  courses.   Our  program  is  designed  to  teach  students  how  to  find,  evaluate,  and  use  information  appropriately.   Assessment  of  student  understanding  and  application  of  these  skills  is  accomplished  through  online  exams  managed  by  the  library.    LIBRARY  SESSIONS  

   

Schedule  librarian-­‐led  sessions  to  introduce  your  students  to  library  services  and  resources  as  well  as  the  requirements  for  the  information  literacy  exam  (ILE).    A  typical  ENG  100  session  includes  an  introductory  presentation,  database  demonstration,  and  hands-­‐on  database  searching  by  students.  Sessions  are  held  in  the  library  instruction  area  (a  22  seat  computer  lab)  in  

the  Learning  Commons,  3rd  floor,  but  classroom  visits  can  also  be  arranged.  

Research  Challenge  The  Research  Challenge  is  an  activity  that  helps  students  find,  evaluate,  and  use  credible  sources  in  their  research  assignments.  Students  start  their  research  in  the  library  and  get  the  help  when  they  need  it.  View  the  RC  online  at  http://lcc.hawaii.libguides.com/re  searchchallenge

   TUTORIALS  &  EXAMS  

 

 Students  prepare  for  the  ILE  by  studying  the  appropriate  online  tutorial  posted  on  the  library  website  at  www.leeward.hawaii.edu/library.    After  reviewing  the  tutorial  students  are  ready  to  take  the  exam.

Transfer Scores Exam  scores  are  no  longer  transferrable  from  semester  to  semester.   Students  are  now  required  to  take  the  ILE  each  time  they  enroll  in  the  course.  

 Exam Enrollment

Students  must  be  enrolled  before  the  LCC_InfoLit_ENG  exam  tab  appears  on  their  Laulima  page.   E-­‐mail  your  class  rosters  with  student  name  and    UH  e-­‐mail  address  to  Chris  (ENG  100)  or  Junie  (ENG  22  &  24).  You  will  receive  an  e-­‐mail  from  the  library  confirming  that  your  students  are  enrolled  and  can  access  the  exam  in  Laulima.  

   

Weekly Progress Reports Reports  will  be  sent  to  you  each  week  with  student  scores.  Reports  begin  after  your  first  student  finishes  the  exam.   A  final  report  will  be  sent  after  the  exam  closing  date.  

 Retake Option

Students  get  two  chances  to  pass  the  ILE.   If  they  fail  their  2nd  attempt  they  can  request  the  retake  option  at  the  librar s  Reference  Desk.   The  yellow  Tutoring  Request  Form  must  be  signed  by  the  instructor  before  tutoring  is  provided  by  a  librarian.  At  the  completion  of  the  tutoring  session  students  will  receive  instructions  on  how  to  access  the  retake  exam.    LCC-­‐Waianae  &  Online  students:   E-­‐mail  requests  are  accepted  and  signatures  are  not  required.   Tutoring  can  be  done  by  e-­‐mail  or  over  the  phone.
