The Origin…

In those days need of potable water, health care, education and basic infrastructure laid the foundation of Mahila Mandal Barmer Agor, an esteemed organization in Thar Desert of western Rajasthan. The situational silent victim, Late Ms. Mumtaz Ben, coming from an orthodox Muslim family committed to change her own life and Indira colony too. With a thought to set egalitarian society, convinced her family beyond the barriers and restrictions she started to motivate her fellow residents towards right to have access to basic needs.

In a male dominant society, found difficult to materialize her thoughts. However, sincerity and consorted efforts she organized her fellow residents, that turned into a movement, raising the demand for their basic needs to the district administration. Her selfless and emancipated approach and attitude of getting things done made proud to Indira Colony residents with having primary school, drinking water, basic health care facilities and proper infrastructure.

After success in the initial struggling period she won the confidence among people, with that confidence she always looked forward to rendered selfless services and problem solving. Meanwhile, society brought to identify Late Ms. Mumtaz Ben as women of philanthropist in nature and concerned for the rural poor.

The success story moved and acclaimed by District Collector of Barmer, Shri Sohan Lal and with his guidance, the movement got its shape and formally registered as an NGO under the Rajasthan State Society Registration Act 1958 on January 1991, in the name of Mahila Mandal Barmer Agor (MMBA). Since then, the organization is constantly striving for the upliftment of deprived, dalits, girl children and women empowerment through basic health care services, education, social and economic intervention.

During the journey of upliftment of women, the National Women Commission has graced Late Ms. Mumtaz Ben with "Women Excellency Award” “in 1997. By then MMBA has also been accorded at district and state level many times.

Persons with

Disabilities

percent of Persons with Disabilities

of the total population of the

Country. These include persons with

Skill Development

Skill development has emerged as a key

strategy to realize the potential of

demographic advantage of having the

youngest workforce with an average age of

29 years in comparison with the advanced

economies to create human resource for

improving country’s competitiveness and

growth. India is poised to become the

youngest country in the world by 2020, with

an average age of 29 years. If the youth are not skilled and face unemployment challenges, it might turn

out to be a liability rather than an asset.

MMBA cater skill development initiative in association of central/ state government

ministry/department. This year we have trained 760 youth and 250 are under training. We have

provided training in Domestic Data Entry Operator, Domestic IT Helpdesk Attendant, Handset Repair

Operator, Handloom Weaver, Fashion Designer,

Dairy Farmer/Entrepreneur, Traditional Hand

Embroidery, Kantha Work and Appliqué etc.

Through skill development approx 54% of the

trainees were linked with self/wage employment

and more trainees are to be linked with

employment. 560 Persons with disabilities and

250 disadvantaged Minority youth and 200

Community Women had undergone the training.

Road crashes are a major

cause of death and injury

among the young, with the

risk rising as children reach

secondary school age and

have more independence,

and young drivers and

passengers facing

significant risks. In today's

world road and transport has become an integral part of every human being. Everybody is a

road user in one shape or the other. Every year road crashes result in loss of lakhs of lives

and serious injuries to crores of people.

In India itself about eighty thousand people are killed in road crashes every year which is

thirteen percent of the total fatality all over the world. In most of the cases crashes occurs

either due to carelessness or due to lack of road safety awareness of the road user. Hence,

road safety education is as essential as any other basic skills of survival. Our aim is to provide

road safety information for road users to encourage safer road user behavior among current

and prospective road users and reduce the number of people killed and injured on our roads

every year. Till the last financial year we had conducted Road Safety Awareness and

Education Program in 1852 Gram Panchayat, 90 Truck/Bus Drivers program, 100 School

Awareness Program and trained 8444 Volunteers. This year MMBA has taken Road Safety

week as education and Awareness. Continually efforts have been made by us to educate

people through pasting of posters in cities mass people are gathered.

Desert terrain of

Western Rajasthan gives

adverse and complex

situation such as high

temperature, drought,

unfavorable agriculture

production and dairy

farming; limited source

of livelihood etc. gives

big challenges for rural

population. Mostly it is

hard to depend on same

source of livelihood;

male partners are to migrate for earnings. MMBA make various efforts like market

linking and community buying and selling are being done by us to increase the livelihood

of rural women and men, due to which they started getting a steady and high income.

Livelihood

Rural women make handicraft products to fulfil the order of the exporter and to sell

in fair aftermarket engagement

Women Empowerment

Ms. Kesar Kumari becomes a trainer of appliqué artisan out of the trainee. She began to be a learner; during the appliqué artisan training her courage, learning ability and confidence nurtured by our eminent trainer. Post-training she was provided a platform to take the responsibility which she bears efficiently as trainer. With grace, she set an example of success among her women fellows. She is recognized by her community as their leader and guiding factor.

This year more than 200 women trained with different skill set such as literacy skills, product development skills and communication skills etc. our programs and implementation focus on women empowerment at large. We are working to close gender gap through our women centric programs of skill development, artisan development and their related issues.

Page 13: Annual Report 2018-19mmbarajasthan.org.in/images/docs/annual-report-2018-19.pdfSince then, the organization is constantly striving for the upliftment of deprived, dalits, girl children

Rajasthan’s female literacy rate is worse than

the average for the Arab world and “fragile and

conflict-affected” countries, according to World

Bank data. India’s seventh most populated state

(68.5 million people), with 24% of its population

between the ages of six and 14, Rajasthan also

has many children out of school (5%), according

to government data.

Barmer lack behind in girl enrolment and retention, girls are retained back to home in belief

that they are to do chores, take care children and old age. They trained to take all the future

responsibilities at their Laws house as their mother did. To counter and link out of schools

girls/boys and ensure retention MMBA has conducted more than 28 village level meetings to

put 213 children’s in schools. We have aligned educational promotional activities with other

development intervention at village level. This year we have conducted awareness

programme focused on need of education and relevance of school into children’s life.

Education and Literacy

Page 14: Annual Report 2018-19mmbarajasthan.org.in/images/docs/annual-report-2018-19.pdfSince then, the organization is constantly striving for the upliftment of deprived, dalits, girl children

Our water resource development program ensures holistic development of

community, our water resource and preservation work has been able to

create sustainability, availability of water during drought, water resources

brought to address caste based discrimination and ensure beneficiary

children’s to complete their education at graduation level.

Health issues in the area remain a challenge, lack of information sources,

skilled workforce and limited resources keep population away from health

and hygiene knowledge and practices especially among women and

adolescent girls. MMBA has actively conducting health and hygiene

awareness programs and aligning health and hygiene education with its

other programs. They are educated how to keep healthy, what are does and

don’t, what can be done as preventive action etc. These initiatives keep

women conscious and updated about family health and hygiene concerns.

In modern times, a lot of efforts have made to protect the interest of

consumer by government and non-government organizations. In spite of

this, the exploitation of consumers has not come to an end, and they are be

fooled by business interests at all levels. We should acknowledge that

consumer exploitation will not come to an end unless they themselves come

forward to protect and promote their own interest. Although businessman

is aware of his social responsibilities even then it comes across many cases

of consumer exploitation. The reason of consumer’s inactivity inability to

act against any kind of exploitation is lack of information of ways to take

action. MMBA is conducting consumer awareness program to safeguard

consumer interest on regular basis. This year We have conducted consumer

awareness program in 19 villages, through which we have educated rural

consumers and youth on malpractices by suppliers, Irregular supply, wrong

weight measures, poor after-sale-service, duplicate goods, unethical

advertisement, health and safety hazards, poor quality of goods and

preventive measures of such practices.
