Spring 2012 Class Schedule Location: Amphitheater at MBBG, west side of Polliwog Park (unless otherwise stated below). Park on N. Peck Ave., off Manhattan Beach Blvd. Prior Registration: Required for most Classes. Contact: Julie Gonella at 310-546-1354 or [email protected] Rain Bird’s New Drip Irrigation System March 31, 9 -11am Note location of Class: Downtown Post Office landscape on 15 th & Valley Mike Garcia, Enviroscape Dave Palumbo, Rain Bird This class will provide a demonstration of Rain Bird’s new drip irrigation system, made of strong, flexible polyethylene. It uses their new “Copper Shield” technology…tiny strips of copper which create negative ions, resulting in a natural, non-chemical way to repel roots, thus preventing clogging of drip irrigation emitters. This method is effective and efficient, and will cut water use in half. Identifying & Attracting Our Local Wild Birds April 21, 9:30 – 11am Bob Shanman, Wild Birds Unlimited Join Bob on a casual bird walk through the Garden. Learn about spring migration and the colorful birds commonly seen, such as warblers, orioles, tanagers, goldfinches, grosbeaks and many more. Learn how to identify these birds and attract them to your yard. Bring binoculars. How to Compost in the Garden April 28, 10-11am EARTH DAY AT POLLIWOG PARK Lisa Ryder, City Authorized Instructor Composting…Nature’s way to recycle your trash into a treasure for your garden. Learn how to set up composting and worm bins, and the simple steps to recycling many organic materials such as yard trimmings and food waste, while creating free organic fertilizer. Discounted compost bins and worm bins available to MB residents. Sustainable Landscaping June 16, 10-11am Mimi Andersen, Garden Magic Mike Garcia, Enviroscape Are you interested in creating beautiful and environmentally sound, climate appropriate landscapes that use less water, create less pollution, and provide habitats for wildlife? These local landscapers will share their knowledge and experience gained creating numerous earth-friendly gardens in the South Bay. Discussions will include: Irrigation/rainwater harvesting methods for zero runoff; gardens that pay for themselves over time; lawn removal and reduction; urban habitat and pest management; the right plant choices; choosing non-toxic materials and the fossil fuel cycle; using recycled and local materials; and design mistakes to avoid.

If you would like to have a specific insect identified, bring it to class in a sealed plastic bag.
