I was never much of a girly girl at school (it got a little better in uni) and, at one point, I was a bit of a tom-boy with my hair up in a cap playing basketball with the guys every minute of the day. So celebrating Valentine’s Day was never really on the top of my to-do list. I just didn’t see the point until I recently decided that, on February 14, I would call all of my friends and thank them for being in my life. I guess the Japanese learned something valuable from me (cough cough) and created a White Day (p.18). Besides, what can be better than receiving the most amazing chocolate cake for Valentine’s from ChoCo’a? Yummy!

There’s been a lot of activity lately, including loads of concerts (p.20-23) in this amazing weather where you’re trying to dance but can’t feel your toes from the cold. It’s always either too hot or too cold; we just have to complain, don’t we? We should be thankful for what we have; our homes, our family, our iPod, our smart phone. Just imagine what life would be like without your smart phone (p.40).

Exciting stuff! It is the red month now, and green for those few who see things differently (p.34-35), so enjoy every minute and spread the love.

ShyamI’m Shyam. I like conversation, and tea.

They do go well together. Music, as well, is something I’m very close to. A guitarist

myself, I do fancy the occasional jam. Musically, I find myself often stuck in the 60’s and 70’s. My love for music, coupled with my interest in writing and graphic

design is what got me here.

I first heard of one8one through a friend who had submitted a photo. What appealed to me the most was the design

and layout. With its simple and clean aesthetic approach, one8one’s fun and

student friendly content caught my eye. Another feature of the magazine I greatly

appreciate is in its being a platform for teens and young adults to showcase their

talents to a wider audience.

Short lived, my internship with one8one has been a great experience. I could sum

up in two words what made my few weeks here so much fun: Creative Freedom. The

atmosphere at the office was electric, to say the least. We came up with concepts

and bounced ideas off each other. With my birthday just around the corner, I couldn’t

ask for a better gift than to be a part of one8one’s next issue.

SalimInterning at one8one was just loads of

fun, I got to meet and make new friends and I learnt a lot about the printing

process that the magazine actually has to go through before distribution. Going

through the motions of getting a magazine and thinking up ideas for the magazine

took loads of hard work and organisation, but the end product gives you a feeling of

accomplishment and satisfaction when you know that people will read your work.

I would recommend anyone who wants to intern to do so because the experience is not just about learning new things but

about actually having a great time with great people at the same time.

AyeshaWe all have expectations of our first

internship - the experience, the office environment, the editor, our assignments,

and field trips required for our work. My anxiety was immediately relieved after an

unexpected casual meeting at More café. Yes, that’s the first place my editor, Maria, took us after our arrival at the office. And

right when I expected questions about our previous work endeavors, we were

asked about our dream job, the ideal office environment and that one idea we

imagined was completely impossible. I remember Maria asking us to believe and

act upon the idea that there is nothing you can’t do, and the next four weeks were

a reflection on that rule. I realised my interest and passion related to food and

actively surveyed 10 coffee shops in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. I was never apprehended

on my lack of knowledge regarding the subject or inexperience, but rather

prodded and encouraged to move forward with the ideas with the relevant resources provided. I cant express how grateful I am to one8one for allowing me to experiment

and realise that food writing was indeed my field. And don’t even get me started

on the best New Year’s Eve of my life with Coldplay fan pit access, all thanks to

one8one! Surely, you must know better, how fortunate it is to know who we want

to be.

HEAVEN AT 7HE SEVENS The opportunity to go to the Rugby Sevens

as a reporter was just too much fun. I had the pleasure of meeting some players,

coaches and managers and that is just the tip of the iceberg for a rugby fan as myself.

The atmosphere was amazing; people were dancing and dressed up in costumes

ranging from cavemen, gladiators to sirens and Greek goddesses among the many.

The Rugby Sevens is probably one of the most fun events to attend and definitely the

most exhilarating tournament to watch. It’s worth adding, given the opportunity of

getting out there on the field and taking close-up photos of the players, I have had

an experience of a lifetime, especially after meeting the coach of this year’s winning

England team, Ben Ryan.

SHARMILA DANCE PRESENTS INTERNATIONAL & UAE DANCE STARS TOGETHER ON ONE STAGE

A leading prestigious dance company in the UAE, Sharmila Dance held its first ever dance gala, showcasing the best in ballet, contemporary, jazz, salsa, tango and hip-hop

with international and local dance stars performing at Centrepoint Theatre, DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates on Wednesday, January 4 and Thursday, January 5, 2012.

Stars from the Stuttgart Ballet Company and The Estonian Ballet Company performed the classical Pas de Deux from the timeless Sleeping Beauty and Nutcracker ballets,

respectively.

Furthermore, members of Sharmila Dance showed their versatility and captivated spectators through their performances in jazz, hip-hop and contemporary pieces.

DANCE TILL YOU DROP WITH KINECT

Xbox 360 recently announced that Christopher Lawrence, AKA CL, a UAE-based dancer and instructor, has set the new

Guinness World Record for the Longest Videogames Marathon Playing a Motion-Sensing Dance Game by dancing for 16

hours, 21 minutes and 44 seconds on its Kinect title, Dance Central 2.

Guinness World Records created a new record category for the title as the infinite body movement possibilities offered

by Kinect meant that the physical and mental challenge of playing Dance Central 2 set it apart from previous

videogaming dance records.

The attempt took place on December 15, 2011, at the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai, where dancers Ian and CL beat the

previous Guinness World Record that stood at 15 hours, 17 minutes and 44 seconds. CL then continued dancing until

10.30pm, beating the old record by more than an hour.

NEW CAREER WORKSHOP AT DBSLast December, I was given the opportunity to participate in an experimental workshop aimed at arming young students for the future by investigating what you need in your metaphorical “backpack” to be successful and happy in the future. My friends and I looked to potential challenges that may await us; identifying and acknowledging our personal saboteurs, the small voice in our heads that discourages us from achieving what you dream of achieving. Next, to find ways of preparing to face these challenges and saboteurs, we went to a whole new level and physically acted out the role of saboteurs vs. our future selves, developing and sharing ways of overcoming such obstacles. The workshop was led by Nicola Tanner and Banan Hadidi; the two worked perfectly together, ensuring that the workshop maintained a relaxed, productive atmosphere with playing guidelines such as “We are all players, no observers”, instantly ensuring that all students contributed and gained the full benefit of the sessions. Overall, this was an amazing experience and I sincerely hope it carries on, helping others to achieve, what is, in reality, achievable.

TDIC ANNOUNCES OPENING DATES OF SAADIYAT CULTURAL DISTRICT MUSEUMS

The Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC), the entity behind the Saadiyat Island development in Abu Dhabi, has announced the opening dates for the

museums of the Saadiyat Cultural District. The Louvre Abu Dhabi will open in 2015, Zayed National Museum in 2016 and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open in 2017.

Substantial work has already been completed on the museums. Detailed architectural designs have now been finalised, as well as all foundation and piling work. Growing

teams with regional expertise that will operate each institution are undergoing comprehensive training, and the acquisition of the vast and diverse art and artifact

collections for each one is well underway.

Designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize-winner Jean Nouvel, The Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to be the first universal museum in the Arab World, and will showcase art from

different civilisations and cultures. It will display paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, manuscripts and objects of historical, cultural and sociological significance from the

ancient to the contemporary. The most distinctive feature of The Louvre Abu Dhabi is its 180-metre diameter dome, with intricate perforations, designed to resemble rays of sunlight passing through date palm fronds and diffusing light below. More pieces of art

are currently being revealed in a public programme called Louvre Abu Dhabi: Talking Art Series, a series of nine monthly lectures at Manarat Al Saadiyat, the already open

art and exhibition centre in the Saadiyat Cultural District.

VISS STUDENT LANDS ACCOLADE FOR PERFECT VCE EXAM SCORE Students at Victoria International School Sharjah (VISS) gained exceptional results for Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) exams, with many students achieving A and A+ grades across a number of subject areas. One of the students finished with a result that placed her in the top one per cent of all students in Australia, gaining her a full scholarship at Melbourne University, which is ranked as the number one university in Australia and is also one of the top-ranking universities worldwide.

The VCE is a two-year secondary school Australian qualification that is highly regarded internationally and recognised for university entrance worldwide.

When I asked around for good cafés in Abu Dhabi, Mugg and Beans topped

the answer. And once we set foot inside this woody English café, we understood

its popularity perfectly. Surrounded by wooden barrels on show and green

leather seating, this coffee shop was very cozy indeed and looked perfect for all gatherings. The menu-what

can I say? Despite the overwhelming variety, we just had to pick the

bottomless beverages since neither of us had tried them before. We opted

for the bottomless coffee, iced tea and lemonade that could be refilled over

and over again. When you’re a student and you’re tight on pocket money,

you’d understand just how valuable bottomless beverages are. As for

customer service, we did have to wait for the staff to take our order, but they were pleasant and our orders arrived

pretty quickly. My friends had the coffee and iced tea while I sipped down the

cold, tangy lemonade. When you’ve had a long day at work, iced lemonade really

does the magic for you. And with Mugg and Beans, you can have as much as you

like. This coffee shop definitely lived up to all of our expectations.

#2 MUGG & BEANS

Get ready to enter a classy French-style coffee shop with cheerful attendants

escorting you to suitable seats. Located at one end of Marina Mall, little did we

realise how cozy and elegant the coffee shop would be. I was impressed with the

details, from the pastel-colored menu card to the custom-made napkins and choice of furniture. My friend selected

the iced cappuccino while I tried the chocolate truffle cake. Though the

pastries were rather limited, there was a variety of beverages and sandwiches

to choose from. The verdict was that my friend (after having tolerated three

different cups of caffeine) found the iced cappuccino lovely. He deemed it

the best he’s had anywhere. Meanwhile, my truffle cake sat ignored after three

bites-it was rather dry. As much as we didn’t want to, we had to depart from

the humble and cozy French experience. Café de la Paix makes a lovely choice for a posh outing with the girl gang or even

that special friend.

#1 CAFE DE LA PAIX

A retro coffee shop located in Marina Mall, the red and yellow interiors

appeared rather Arabic to me. This tiny coffee shop was bustling with

crowds on a Saturday as attendants rushed over from one corner to another

taking orders. But, wait, what did we notice? A tiny red button, font-etched with time, lying on the circumference

of our table. Curious as we were, we decided to test it and, sure enough, our

attendant appeared after a few minutes to take our order. My friend challenged himself with the rather strong Turkish coffee and I chose the mouth-watering blueberry cheesecake. Be honest, don’t

the words cheese and cake just turn you into a six-year-old all over again? The

dark Turkish coffee that arrived in a small red cup just screamed about how

concentrated it would be. One sip, and my friend confessed this coffee would

be a feat for him. Let me warn you, this coffee is best under stress, or during

those cramming sessions on the night before the exam (let’s face it, we have

all had those nights). Cinnamon City is ideal for lunch as well, given their

variety of subs and meals. Bring your friends along but try not to play with

the functional “call me” button; they’re having it busier than you!

#3 CINNAMON CITY

Now that the holidays are over and the festive season takes a breather for the

rest of the year, one8one thought it that we could all do with a healthy dose

of caffeine. And what better way to do that than to test out all the best coffee

shops? Our own Ayesha Akbar Ali rolled across 20 coffee shops and here are her

top six from Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

A café that’s built on the color schemes of maroon and white, Costa is a very comfortable coffee shop that caters to all demographics. With plush leather couches, and enthusiastic baristas, it has managed to create a cozy environment. We visited the branch at Dubai Festival City, where you can choose to be seated outside (especially given this wonderful weather) or the familiar indoors. My friend ordered a frescato while I selected a creamy slice of tiramisu. She sipped down her frescato with eyes closed, oblivious of my patience to hear her speak about the beverage. But it was clearly visible just how perfect she found her selection. So I decided to get started with mine before she was capable of muttering English. I took a modest bite of my Tiramisu, afraid of the cream that appeared to smother the cake. One bite. Two. Three. Four. It dawned upon me that I had lived 21 years of my life without acknowledging the existence of this divine pastry. Need I say more?

#1 COSTA

Want to surprise that special someone with the little things in life? Head down to Kino Café after sunset and watch Dubai Mall’s musical fountain at its best. Yes, this humble café is the unexplored view of the famous fountain that gathers hundreds of people every night. You can choose between the elegant indoor seating and the fresh, breezy outdoors. But if I were you, I’d rather spend the mandatory Dh50 and eat outside with a steady breeze flowing and the glorious musical fountain playing in the background. Alright, enough said about the venue; the menu was beyond amusing. There were coffee and tea varieties we had never realise even existed. If you’re a tea person, you’ll definitely be excited with the Jasmine tea. Our sumiyaki arrived pretty quickly, and it felt like a suitably blended aromatic cup of coffee. Little did we know that the Japanese coffee is distinguished by the use of coconut milk. If your eyes do catch a glimpse of the grey buzzer placed at the table corner, you won’t have to struggle beckoning them for your order. What can we say about this café? It’s got an amazing view, the perfect atmosphere for a quiet chat with a friend and an interesting menu that encourages you to experiment.

#2 KINO CAFE

I’d be surprised if you’ve failed to spot this vintage English café right beside Galleries Lafayette. From the crockery and menu to the furniture and pastel colors, this little coffee house takes you back to the 18th century, when beauty appeared in antique interiors. The staff were very presentable and attended to us immediately. Vanilla espresso sounded like an interesting combination, so we went ahead with it. And it sure was. Imagine a cup of hot coffee topped with a thick scoop of vanilla ice cream. What was once hot soon turned ice cold once the vanilla merged with the coffee. If you prefer iced coffee with a little difference, this would be perfect for you. Also, the Shakespearean coffee house gives you the suitable background to try that fake bri’ish accent you’ve always wanted. If you’re a fan of Jane Austen classics, you would certainly enjoy the experience. As for the rest of you, go easy on the slightly outworn furniture would you? It’s supposed to look old, you know?

Soulcalibur V Namco’s smash-’em-up might not have an Inception-deep storyline, but it has cool words like soul and edge, so the attempt at telling one is bearable. The new instalment, apart from introducing a host of new (good-looking) characters, adds a “revolutionary” eight-way run, allowing players to fight in “true 3D” environments rather than a static side-scroll. Namco also promises a refined battle system that differentiates between heavy and light weapons, which limits and aids characters accordingly. Oh and let’s not forget, Ezio Auditore from Assassin’s Creed will be featured as one of the special guest characters. Now that’s a different take on the word assassin.

Unit 13What’s a console without a proper military

shooter? Unit 13 fills that gap for the PlayStation Vita. It has players picking off

enemies in 36 action-packed missions as one of the six operatives. Players can also hop onto Wi-Fi or 3G for some competitive

action against players from around the world. The game features a live notification

interface that feeds users leaderboard positions, daily challenges and news from

the game.

Uncharted: Golden AbyssThe adventures of Nathan Drake do not only lie with the PlayStation 3. The globe-trotting adventurer is back in Golden Abyss, one of the highly awaited launch titles of Sony’s new handheld system, the PlayStation Vita. Drake is now after a 400-year-old Spanish expedition, which quickly unravels a murderous trail of an ancient and secret Spanish sect. His search leads him to the river basins and undiscovered temple ruins of the caverns of Central America, and also into the crosshairs of rival Jason Dante.

The Darkness IIWhile having massive, jaw-equipped

tentacles that chomp up enemies like it was breakfast time-and having The Darkness

itself behind your back (quite literally)-are good enough reasons to buy the game, there

is actually a pretty good story to follow in The Darkness II. Jackie Estacado is back and

is angrier than ever, especially now that he is the Don of the Franchetti family. Unable

to shake off the memory of witnessing the death of his long-term girlfriend,

things were made worse when Jackie was attacked, provoking not only him, but The

Darkness within himself as well. Now there is a full-scale mob war to deal with and an

opportunity to unravel the mystery of The Darkness.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Final Fantasy XIII-2 continues three years after the events of Final Fantasy

XIII. The utopian world of Cocoon, after being overrun by Fal’Cie and its servants,

has been saved by Lightning and others. However, Lightning is nowhere to be found,

leading the people of Cocoon to believe she is dead. Serah, her sister, believes

Fox Hill V

Some might say that living in Dubai as a teenager opens up a world of opportunities. Post-rock band Fox Hill V is living proof of this. Fox Hill V was formed in September, 2011, after four good friends with a mutual interest in music decided to unite their talents to create what they describe as a “post-rock monster”.

Fox Hill V are a fresh new band that have just emerged into Dubai’s local music scene, and are currently in the process of recording their first EP, a large step in a hopefully long future. Having played a few gigs at various private events, the band look forward to playing at more events in order to promote themselves and make the local youth aware of who Fox Hill V are as a band and make them aware of the messages behind the music. They have also been working with artists such as photographer and graphic designer Khashayar Toodehfallah to promote themselves and develop designs for merchandise, which will be available to purchase in early 2012.

The members of the band are Niklas Olsson, lead guitarist, Ali Gawdat, who is on bass, Sami Hazim, the drummer, and Gerrit Genis as a guitarist. The four of them have known each other since 2008 and have all played in separate bands in the past, however this is the first project in which they are all involved.

As all of them are studying in Dubai at the moment, and each member has other commitments aside from the band. Gawdat has stated, “It’s something we hope to transpire into something more, and we do take it very seriously. But with members leaving for university soon, we don’t know what is going to happen. All we have to do is wait and see.”

Meanwhile they will be creating music as a monster to be unleashed to the youth of the UAE.

White Valentine’s in Japan

Fellow Skip Beat manga fans would know the chaos Kyoko faced after mixing up her Valentine’s Day chocolates. Like other Japanese women, Kyoko reserved specific chocolates for her colleagues, her friend Moko, an admired senior co-actor Ren, and the hated Sho. Imagine the frustration if the gift you had intended for the admired one fell into the hands of the despised one!

For those unfamiliar with the popular Japanese comic, the above scene is just one of the many depictions of what happens on Valentine’s Day in Japan. While the rest of the world is buying gifts for their special someone, women in Japan are obliged to gift chocolates to not just male friends, but co-workers, family members, relatives and classmates. Does it sound like a lot of work? Yes, it’s absolutely exhausting. So why would women work themselves through the night baking chocolate for men that they don’t especially like? Gratitude forms the backbone of Japanese culture to the extent that if a return-gift (or Okaeshi) was not received, it would be assumed as an insult.

So what about the Japanese men? Well, for Valentine’s Day, they enjoy the attention from their female colleagues, friends and family. Strange enough, a month later, it’s their turn to return the favour. On March 14, exactly a month after Valentine’s Day, Japanese men offer gifts to women who sent them chocolates. Although the popular choice would be chocolates, cookies and candy, women prod on what they’d want for White Day besides confectionary.

Just because the tradition originated from Japan, it doesn’t mean that the act of gratitude cannot be extended to the ever-changing city of Dubai. Armed with more than a decade of experience in rock and roll, country and blues, the Black Keys’ El Camino just might be one of the best rock albums of 2011.

The Ohio-raised duo, Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach, have collaborated with producer Danger Mouse to create 11 tracks that I could only describe as fresh

and energetic. With the use of effects and other unnecessary tweaks limited to a minimum El Camino has 11 tracks that have given American roots music a new,

bold feel. The single, Lonely Boy, starts with a bang and, before you know it, you’re grooving to its catchy tune. Gold on the Ceiling is another peppy, foot-tapping

song that evokes-but doesn’t imitate-The Beatles in their glory days. Originality is something these guys have paid attention to, and they seem to do it with ease.

Little Black Submarines is softer, for the most part, with a great solo to satisfy one’s guitar cravings. There’s no saying where the duo will be in a few years, but I’ll be

sure to watch out for them. It’s bands like this that strive to keep rock and roll alive, and for that, hats off.

Hip-hop isn’t really my cup of tea, but this album stands out for a very good reason. Supported by its jazz-inspired, loungey composition and lyrics that aren’t about

parties and women, Undun by The Roots doesn’t necessarily blow your mind, but still leaves you with a good and lasting impression. It’s a concept album that tells the story of the short life of Redford Stevens, a fictional character named after a

Sufjan Stevens song. Lyrically sound, the album is a reverse-first-person account of Redford’s life in urban poverty. After the intro, Dun’ Comes Sleep, a uniquely

thought-out song about Redford’s last moments, the composition for Sleep fits so well with the lyrical theme without being an obvious choice. Kool On chronicles

Redford’s success and reign at the top of the game, with his flashy suits and fancy cars. With some soulful guitar fillers and hooks, it is quite a captivating song. Stomp is gritty, and with its angry riffs, it bears a heavy theme. Tip the Scale sheds light on

Redford’s fight-to-survive attitude, and has a hopeful yet raw feel. Rough and not from an easy place, this album is filled with wonderful ideas, and works better for

me with every listen.

AMY WINEHOUSE

‘LIONESS: HIDDEN TREASURES’Last year bore the loss of some of the world’s finest musicians, but it did so most gracefully with that of Amy Winehouse. In spite of her troubled and fatal lifestyle, her untimely death was received by the world with respect, a testament to her soulful voice and immense talent. The opening track, Our Day Will Come, is a blissful reggae number that magically transports you to a happy, peaceful place, filled with hope. I picture a nice Caribbean beach with its pristine waters. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? bears little resemblance to the original by The Shirelles, with Winehouse bringing her own brand of music to the song. I hold a lot of respect for covers that have their own character, as opposed to those that are identical to the original. Another is the umpteenth cover of The Girl from Ipanema, which has a very modern jazz feel and time signature. One of my favorites from the album is Valerie, a fun and energetic song that I could only assume is about a friend you’ve lost touch with. “Rhythm floods my heart, the melody, it feeds my soul,” croons Winehouse in Half Time. Intimate and moving, to say the least, Lioness: Hidden Treasures is a most befitting way to honor the youngest member of the 27 Club.

Creamfields. Oh boy, what a weekend! First and foremost, two days of quality dance music is something that takes weeks to recover from. My legs hurt for days from all the dancing. This year, Flash Entertainment delivered over 20 hours of a dance overdose to the capital, featuring massive acts like Deadmau5, Katy B, Tiesto , Laidback Luke, Magnetic Man and Tinie Tempa.

I was amazed by how lively and true to her core Katy B was when on stage. She, although a young artist, managed to get everybody going and singing along to the tunes from her debut album, On a Mission. This girl is on fire; definitely worth buying her music.

Deadmau5 was clearly the artist people came to see on the first day. There were many wearing his signature Mou5head, almost competing with one another for the best replica. The Canadian DJ came onto a giant LED-lit cube wearing a Cheesy head himself. He delivered over two hours of some quality heavy beats to the ever-wanting dance lovers.

The second day’s highlight was, obviously, Tiesto. While the DJ has earned the love of millions around the globe, I was rather surprised to see how out of touch he had become. His style has changed drastically, which makes me think he is either trying to bring something totally new to the folks or he is just out of it.

The true star of the night was most definitely Laidback Luke. I have never seen a DJ electrify the crowd and send them into a one-off dance altogether. I’d say those couple of hours was when i danced the most at Creamfields.

The beauty of the event was that most of the partygoers made it a weekend, having the party move over to the nearby hotels and taking it all the way until early Saturday morning. The party just kept going on and on.

Overall, the whole weekend was brilliantly organised. The venue was fantastic, featuring the main stage as well as two tents, a shisha chill-out, I Don’t Feel Like Dancing area and an oxygen bar. Joy! I say thumbs up to the organisers, artists and, of course, us-the partygoers. Creamfields Abu Dhabi 2011 was amazing. Creamfields Abu Dhabi 2012-bring it on! 21+

When it comes to great artists, the talented ones, it is usually hard to get to see them perform. They are either not popular enough or you are not in the right region for their concert to happen. So I was surprised to hear Sade was coming to Yas Island.

As I expected, the crowd was very different from most of the concerts in the UAE; stylish, mature, classy and jazzy were the words to describe it. There was a sense in the air that we all knew exactly what we came for-great music, a brilliant performance and to see a living legend perform.

Once the crowd filled up the arena, the British Nigerian beauty came out from the bottom of the stage and kicked off the show with Soldier of Love. The entire set-up was impressive yet simple, featuring an LED backdrop and gigantic fabrics hanging in front of the stage or in the background, depending on the song performed.

Sade has an amazing ability to connect with people through her songs and when she just speaks. Flowing from one hit to another, her voice took us on a journey of exploring the feelings known and discovering the unknown.

“This is a very emotional time for me as we have come to the end of the world tour,” she addressed the crowd. “My last name is Adu, and I would like to rename the city for one night, Adu Dhabi, just tonight.”

The crowd was exstatic, we were all one, together.

To complete the magnificent night, Sade stood above the crowd, elevated on a small part of the stage, easily 10 to 15 metres above the rest. She wore a deep red dress, shining like a gem wrapped in her diamond voice. I’ve seen beauty, I’ve heard magnificence, I’ve felt love. I’ve seen Sade!

Coldplay

An infectious start of a New Year

So how shall I describe my first concert? Yes, it’s embarrassing to admit that I hit 21 without having attended any concerts, but it was a question of value rather than the opportunity. Why people spent over Dh300 for a concert was out of my comprehension, until I saw Coldplay live on New Year’s Eve.

The band was welcomed with fireworks and thrilled fans as they opened with their latest album’s single, Hurts like Heaven. Despite having waited for five hours (yes, we were really early), the band kept us on our toes for a little more than an hour. A few songs from their fifth album were accompanied by past hits such as Yellow, Lost, Viva La Vida, The Scientist and more. We yelled our lungs out in sync with the band while my friend stood in astonishment as Chris Martin apparently made eye contact with him before jumping on stage (yes, he’s a boy and has been a true fan of Coldplay since their first album).

You can imagine our love-struck grin when the paper confetti made their long-awaited debut at Abu Dhabi. Each performance involved different effects like smoke, lasers, a huge screen and giant balloons that entertained a crowd of over 20,000 fans.

Their latest hit track, Paradise, was followed by a digital countdown to the New Year, which was phenomenal, and soon concluded by their all-neon performance of Every Teardrop is a Waterfall. The concert was excitement, suspense, thrill, energy, happiness and persistence all packed into one hour. The band departed after midnight and left the audience to be stunned by fireworks on display at the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

The Coldplay nation exiting the concert were faced by predictably daunting traffic. Yet, contrary to being frustrated, we reminisced about the surreal night on the way home, while listening to some more Coldplay tracks on loop on a radio station. It was the perfect start to the New Year.

Dear World,

Well hello there. First off, you did a swell job revealing what you were like all these years. I do take pleasure in finally speaking to you up-front. I believe that you are aware of my existence in small ways, but today will probably provide a good moment for you to know who I am.

I’m writing this letter to tell you that I’m finally joining the ranks of the greats, the men and women who work with you all day to make a name for themselves and change you in interesting ways. Today, I am graduating along with my peers after three years, now wiser than I was before. So what does that mean for you? Well, just add one more name to the long list of people who have a dream but haven’t quite got to achieving it yet. I’m pleased to let you know that I’ve not given up and I’ll probably still damn well try to get there, one way or another.

I’d like to thank you for many things, most of them I’m sure the rest of us do thank you for in many ways. I’d like to thank you the most for the interesting people I have met over the years. For my family, I stay blessed until this day, and I am convinced that my blessings continue thanks to them. To my friends, who mean a lot to me, I thank them for the sheer fact that I learned more about you than I would have by reading countless books or by emulating several life lessons. Thank you for helping me find love-I almost began to doubt its existence. I thank you more for the people who came across as a challenge. I have learned to find that there are no bad people who I’ve met in life; there are only bad circumstances we have to face and we make amends to make things a little easier. To the fine folk at the institution of learning, I have no words to express my gratitude over the countless years you put in to bring that creative spark. I thank you endlessly.

Three years ago, I set out to make something of myself. Now, I have the bachelor’s degree stating that I have successfully completed this course. I have a set of skills and I stay in debt to the institution that bestowed it on my name. However, the price we pay in time often leaves you wondering what’s next. I continue to live in the shadow of doubt about what to conquer next. There lies great opportunity in the future, as I have gotten so used to hearing, and I thank you for helping me realise that I cannot build a castle in the sky. There are pitfalls to everything and I am often, like many others before me, forced to tread lightly so as not to bury myself. The degree has certified me. To many, the degree is a ticket, a chance, a show of education. I guess this is my tool to change you for what is needed to be seen.

I am at the end of my letter. I hope you are as bad as what people say. The phrase “big bad world” is too often over-used in my opinion. We are aware that we are the underdogs but I suppose we all need a warning. Perhaps you will be the best challenge we need to make our lives worth living, to become an asset of some value. To me, life is the institution I graduate from.

The book is always better-a saying which is, more often than not, true. And this is evident in Picoult’s novel, My Sister’s Keeper. A story that is sure to create a whirlwind of emotions within oneself, this is about a young girl who sues her parents for the right to make her own medical decisions. The purpose of her existence was essentially for her to be a body of spare parts for her older sister who was inflicted with leukemia. Her family, the Fitzgeralds, are united in their love for each other but divided on exactly where the boundaries of family obligations, love and sacrifice should end. The book takes place throughout the trial, each section told from the point of view of a different character.

Emotionally tense and uplifting, the author creates a flux of anxiety for the reader, not allowing them to lower the book for a second. Read the book before the movie and you wont be disappointed.

MY SISTER’S KEEPER

Everyone loved George Orwell’s 1984-the political innuendo, the complicated love story and the oppressed rebelling against the oppressors. Suzanne Collins has created a modern day 1984, with a fantastical twist that has enraptured such a large audience that the movie is due to be released this year. The story takes place in a fictitious future when America has ceased to exist and in its stead are 12 Districts and The Capitol. Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12 (the main character), takes her younger sister’s place as one of 24 “tributes”-two from each district, selected every year to participate in the Hunger Games at the Capitol. Going with her, another selected tribute, Peeta Mellark, would leave behind her best friend Gale to take care of both their families.

The Games pit the tributes against each other in a fight to the death in a giant arena. Everything is televised and highly publicised all over the country, making it an incredibly important even and Katniss must not only survive the Games, but also decide if she is willing to kill strangers her own age as well as her friend, as a pawn of an oppressive government. The Hunger Games is the first book in a trilogy, released in 2008, and it is an incredible series sure to keep you captivated.

There have been many books published on the genius of Steve Jobs, however none would match the one written by Walter Isaacson. The famous biographer and the author of the critically acclaimed Albert Einstein biography was called by Jobs himself a few years back. As Mr Jobs put it, “I want the world to know the truth about me, I want my children to know me.” Jobs , his colleagues and family members were interviewed for the next three years by Isaacson.

This beautifully written book shines light on what really goes on behind Apple’s doors, as well as in Jobs’ head. It portrays the iCreator as he is, depicting his life from the early hippie days to him turning Apple Inc. into one of the most profitable companies of today. It shows how vulnerable yet dedicated to Apple Jobs was until his last breath. A definite page-turner.

As the international fashion industry undergoes a series of paradigm shifts, the offshoots of that activity can be seen in the aspiring domestic market. Critically acclaimed blog Pintsized Fashionista, the brainchild of British-Iranian twins Saanieh and Alizey Mirza, prevails among the rapidly ascending community catering for those with a predilection for knowing the latest styles, gossip and trends. The pair have established themselves as the predominant outlet for teenage consumers in the UAE and the broader Middle East, highlighted by their status at numerous haute couture events and being placed amongst the twenty most stylish people of the UAE

The past year has seen the pair being catapulted into the spotlight of the industry, being hosted by celebrities such as Eva Longoria and Kelly Brook to pillars of the international scene like Anna Dello Russo, editor of Japan’s Vogue. More recently, esteemed publishers have featured the design duo, noting the innovative styles incorporated into their respective looks and outlook on the industry. Complimenting their unhindered ascent, they have secured themselves the position of being luminaries for Perrier and acquired reputable brands such as L’Oreal and Topshop as sponsors for their blog, demonstrating their credence amongst the professional atmosphere and are perhaps indicating greater prospects to come.

Although the couple both relish writing and designing, their penetration of the industry has allowed them to specialise in their relative passions. Having a propensity towards being different and original since the tender age of six, Saanieh experimented with designing upon inheriting a sewing machine, an assortment of fabrics and a mannequin from her mother whom has always encouraged her infatuation with fashion. Her experiments recently became projects upon the realisation that the monotony of high-street retailers didn’t satisfy her demand for more inspiring collections. She grasped the opportunity to begin her own label with her ever-supportive sister, who has committed to further developing the blog and sustaining their growth into the regional market. Their newly created label, appropriately named after the blog, underscores Saanieh’s transition into the innovative character of her designs, radically altering the nature of a product that is frequently utilised but seldom redesigned; leggings. She describes her inspiration as being predicated upon the basis that they “were bored of wearing comfort clothes such as a t-shirt and black leggings and wanted to spice things up without being too overdressed for the mall, [and] bring a little fun back into everyday dressing that is commonly seen in monochromatic palettes”.

The collection is greatly inspired by Versace for H&M, comprised of vivid colouring, emblematic statements and imaginative illustrations. The selective abilities of the couple shouldn’t be underestimated; the collection certainly spruces up otherwise typical legging styles, or lack thereof, allowing comfortable expeditions to malls accommodating personalised fashion statements. This negates the often frustrating opportunity costs associated with sacrificing comfort for design or vice versa, a predicament faced by those who lack the capability to transport unruly wardrobes on their endeavours.

But according to the pair, the collection is only the beginning of their expansion into the industry. It has been revealed that Saanieh is working on her own separate brand entitled the Saanieh Mirza Fall/Winter 2012 collection, inspired by her style icons, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. She noted that she was extremely lucky to source premium designer fabrics and the expertise of brilliant tailors, although the collection pieces had to demonstrate being limited in nature, which is reflected in the pricing, exceeding that of popular retailer Topshop. The finely selected sourcing of materials and tailors, alongside the obvious commitment, dedication and sheer brilliance of design, has amalgamated into a noteworthy collection that wouldn’t look atypical if placed among brands that comprised her previous collection.

The details remain a trade secret for the moment, but she was allowed to divulge some information that would allow for cursory musings on the nature of the items. At first, I was told that instead of me wearing a red shirt and brown pants, I, in his eyes, was dressed in green and black. Weird. Adam, let’s call him that, had told me he’d had it since he remembers himself and it took him several years to work his way around the condition. A million questions rushed to my head. “How does he choose his outfits? How does he drive? How does he know what fruits are rotten or ripe?” You know, the usual questions.

I was amazed when I got my answers. When it comes to driving, he’s learnt all the signs and traffic lights in his way, like green means stop, and go is generally yellow. The hardest for him is shopping for clothes.

“There were times when I’d go out wearing a brown and a black shoe. My friends had some good laughs,” says Adam. “But overall, I’ve come to accept it and even laugh at it myself from time to time.”

After a good couple of hours talking to him, I absolutely had to go and research. Apart from the facts and descriptions (see right), I was shocked to find out that the majority of people suffering from Protanomaly and Deuteranomaly (the most common forms) are males. This makes me think that maybe that’s why men are generally more prone to having fashion faux pas. It is worth noting, however, that Tritanomaly is the only type that is hereditary and does not depend on whether it is a male or a female.

The next thing to pop up in your mind might be, “ Well how can one, who is color-blind, perceive his or her dreams and have a successful career?” My answer to that is that they still can. Indeed, one won’t be able to work in any design-related field-as bad as it sounds, they won’t-however there are billions of other things to do. Pretty much any position from a finance manager to a CEO of some massive business group could still be taken up or achieved by a color-blind person. It is not necessary to know what color the number or a pie chart is to get the ball rolling. All in all, not to worry.

To finish this up I would like you to take a test (below). All you have to do is look and see what is visible to you. And remember, do not jump to any conclulsions after taking this test; you would still need to visit a doctor if you happen to think you are color blind. This is just for fun.

Deuteranomaly

The image on the left depicts Deuteranomaly. This is the most common color deficiency type and generally exists in about 5 per cent of the male population. Unlike Protanomaly, it is a milder inability to discriminate between greens and reds.

The image on the left is how Tritanomaly affects one’s color perception. This condition is the rarest one as well as the only hereditary one. Someone who suffers from Tritanomaly is unable to distiguish blues from yellows.

ProtanomalyThe image on the left depcts Protanomaly. This condition involves a slight, almost non-existent color discrimination between green and red. It is caused by an altered spectral sensitivity of red retinal receptors.

Normal visionThe image on the left depicts your average color vision; all the color receptors are fully functional and the hues and tones are perceived as they are meant to.

As I walked to the café we were supposed to meet at, I silently thanked Facebook for letting me know what she looked like. It had been a few years since I last met Shilpa. We rarely spoke at school, and it was only later that the social networking site got us talking to each other. A familiar, and rather pretty, face smiled at me, breaking my train of thought. With the greetings and formalities soon out of the way, we got down to business. I got myself a coffee and she went for the lemonade.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your art.I recently graduated from University of Wales in the UK, where I went to pursue my degree in animation. I always found myself leaning towards a career that involved art and knowing that animation is a budding industry for people who are artistically inclined. I wound up opting for it. I currently find myself more of a contemporary artist rather than an animator.

How long have you been doing this and what role have your parents played in your growth as an artist?

A contemporary artist, Shilpa Syamaprasad began drawing at the age of six. With the support of her parents and encouragement from school, Syamaprasad soon developed a passion for creating art. Filling in simple forms with intricate and playful patterns, her work is inspired by many things, and inspires much more. At 22, Chip, as she likes to be called, looks forward to taking her art places. one8one caught up with the budding artist to find out and share her dreams, aspirations and steam punk concepts.

I’ve been drawing since I was a child; I believe I was six years old when

I started. I still remember my first drawing was a picture I mimicked of a king from a textbook and that’s when my mother noticed that I could draw. She has ever since been encouraging

me, constantly cutting out little snippets of pictures and cartoons

from magazines and newspapers so I would try to translate what I see on to

paper. This really helped me develop my observational skills, but drawing

off the top of my mind used to be a bit of a Herculean task in comparison,

something I’ve managed to work through with practice. During the last

two years of high school, I went for professional classes and received a

Bursary for Visual Arts in the eleventh grade from my school, which motivated

me to get into art at a professional level. As for my mother’s involvement, she still

helps me and pushes me to be a better artist perpetually.

Where do you draw your inspiration

from? Well anything that speaks to me in an

aesthetically beautiful or witty manner. Different artists inspire me and they

don’t necessarily need to draw but are expressive in other mediums like dance,

music and fashion. I do have an eye for artists who cleverly combine humor and

politics to execute a sharp message in their work. Currently, I’m in love with

the idea of steam punk, which I was exposed to while doing my university

degree. Steam punk is where they

incorporate Victorian style in the development of mechanical objects. It made me want to watch the film, Wild Wild West, so many times as it practically drowns in the steam punk theme.

What does your art mean to you?I would say my art work is a language I choose to express the way I perceive the world. The style that I’ve currently adapted to is a combination of mural art work I used to do in school, following the Indian artist, Madanan, and henna designs which I used to do a lot while in university.

What vision do you bear for yourself and your art?My first step would be to create a good collection of my art work and hold an art exhibition. I’m assuming from the reaction I shall receive I will have a better understanding of how people view my art work and possibly grow through constructive criticism. Eventually, I would like to start my own brand of greeting cards. This was an idea that popped to mind after I stumbled across this beautiful artist and illustrator, Cori Dantini. I loved how her greeting cards were not necessarily speaking for what the card had to say, but they were beautiful in their own manner. Her style to me was so novel and different. She has been a strong inspiration for me to pursue a similar path.

How much time do you devote to your art in a day?The time I devote to art varies; it’s more based on how inspired I get. If I see something that speaks to me with an artistic value, all I need is a paper and pencil and I’ll be drawing for a good while. I doodle and do life drawing a lot when I’m in India. I always find a lot to draw when I look around as the world is quite raw and real in its form. I tend to be impatient sometimes and choose to work overnight so I can complete my work rather than take a break, as I lose the emotion I feel for the subject the minute I begin to procrastinate. This used to result in a lot of my works ranging from size A5 to A3, so that I didn’t leave my work mid-way and hanging.

Could you give us a walkthrough of your creative process?I look at images of animals, which evokes the emotion of power and beauty in me (like the lion and nightingale), and I adopted their basic silhouette lines and added intricate designs on the inside that sometimes adapted to their structure and sometimes was to create an element of interest. Once I’m done, I generally translate the image to Photoshop to add other details like color and texture and give it a final finish.

What do you do when you’re not drawing?Apart from drawing, I love taking macro photography, mostly because I have a love for capturing intricate textures and details that are not visible from an average distance. I love traveling, discovering new things while I’m at it and, lastly, yes, I’m a bit of a Facebook addict, but it’s also opened doors to a lot of other artists and opportunities, so I’m grateful for that.

In 2012, we have reached the point in technology where even a 12-year-old carries a Blackberry while holding his sister’s hand as she skyrockets points on her iPhone with Angry Birds. I, for instance, have become such a gadget addict, that I managed to surround myself with most of Apple’s products. I’ve reached a point where even my soul was about to be synched with the iCloud and then be distributed across every tech piece I own.

We have come to this stage where our phones do so much, it is hard to imagine what it would be like without them. Our iPads and Macs could be organising a party with their Android mates without inviting their rightful owners. One morning, a couple of weeks ago, I woke up but my phone didn’t. When I saw its cold frame, lifeless and dark, I got chills running down my spine.

time, I’d like to focus your attention on something I have been both unfortunate

and fortunate enough to experience myself.

answer was, “Yep, last night.” I then remembered that it accidentally fell into the sink. My iPhone was dead.

It took me a while to realise how dependent I was on something so small and ordinary. Gone were the days when I could pull out my phone and get a song name I was listening to. Gone were the days when I could tell the whole world how amazing a tree looked on that specific street and post the directions to it. Gone were the days when I’d wake up and be reminded to buy flowers when I left the house. Gone was my iPhone. My life has become so strange and so different. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry about it.

I then had to wait for a week to get it replaced, which meant getting the cheapest and the simplest Nokia one could find. Oh, how I suffered! A simple text would take me about two to three minutes to compose. That’s when I realised how much we’ve evolved since 2001. I suddenly noticed how

disconnected my life has become and how little you do when you don’t own a smartphone.

I started thinking of people who are not privileged enough to own a smartphone and how their lives must be. Let me just say, it isn’t that bad at all. In the span of some seven to 10 days that I’ve spent with the Nokia, I enjoyed life a little more.

I paid more attention to details. I enjoyed the face-to-face conversations a little more. Indeed, there were times when I would get frustrated with being unable to update my status or tweet a thought, however it didn’t bother me much after all.

Eventually, when I got the iPhone back, I held it in my hand and thought of the Nokia. It seemed like a getaway, a holiday when life was simple without worries, Hakuna Matata. Now, I had to get back to the iPhone-my work, my busy, everyday life of today.

Seconds turn into minutes, minutes turn into hours, hours turn into days, days turn into weeks, and so on and so forth we live. Every day we rush somewhere to do some things, every day we wake up with the plan for the upcoming day, thinking non-stop while enjoying a cup of coffee, making calls, arrangements, plans for the future. We live a life building something for ourselves, our children, building houses, buying things. We spend year after year exploring, learning and feeling, and then we collect it all and put it in a box. Then we name that box Memories, and we go to sleep, just so we can do it all again tomorrow, or do it better if we can. The force behind this constant motion is very simple and purely innocent; we call it hope. Some could call it love, or just the hunger that never satisfies. I would like to focus on hope. You see, it all looks great and it’s good to hope and wish for the best, but what is the best? What if that best is actually non-existent and is more of an illusion that we create, or that our parents and society created for us? Have you ever wondered what would happen if you just stopped, stopped and got outside this madness that we call life? Would it feel different? Would it feel better or worse? Would you finally be able to notice the smallest and simplest things around you? Would you say those things are a part of your life, too? They say life is short; how would they know? And even if it is, then why do we keep on running around, keeping ourselves so busy that we often forget what we want? It’s like we are here but not really here. We exist but we do not live.

“So what’s the solution?” you might ask. I simply don’t know. What I do know, however, is this could be the reason why most of us are not happy, why we are never satisfied. “We all have different tastes,” is the reply I am most commonly met with when I bring up the subject that good music is slowly fading away. Yes it’s true that we all like different types of music, but isn’t good music the kind that impacts you beyond the sound that comes out of your headphones? Beyond that catchy tune and the urge to sing along? Unfortunately, I believe that this is what the criteria for whether or not a song is good has turned into; the depth and the meaning of a song, most of the time, no longer seems relevant to anyone. Maybe it’s because music has begun to lose its meaning.

Now onto the touchy topic-you may frown and shake your head, or you may agree with what I have to say. Either way, this is how I see it. I doubt that I am the only one who can make the simple observation about how music has slowly become contorted since the times of phenomenal artists like Michael Jackson, The Beatles, REM, and Queen-the list goes on. A time when a song, which when simply listened to, appears to be about a “blackbird singing in the dead of night” is actually symbolic of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s; this is meaning. You can tell when you listen to a piece of music if the artist has put their heart and soul into their work; the artist feels, and by listening to their music, you feel what the artist felt. Today, this sensation is rare. Artists are losing their creative musical flare. Today, the clothes some artists wear is practically as important as the music they make. The thought and raw emotion that goes into making good music is fading away. I apologise if listening to “Who run the world?” screamed into a microphone repeatedly is unappealing, or even, “I predict an earthquake”. But what is the significance? What is the point in making music which sounds like it was written, recorded and burnt onto a CD in an hour?

Music itself is an instrument, an instrument of self-expression, and like any other instrument, if you put it into the hands of someone who doesn’t know how use it, the result is a frantic mess; put it in the hands of someone who knows and understands it, however, then the result is truly remarkable. So in conclusion, no, I am not being a cynic, there is still good music out there today without a doubt, and the artists who are making this music are keeping it alive. However what I am saying is that good music is getting increasingly harder to find and that the majority of artists are forgetting what this passionate art really stands for. At the end of the day, you are entitled to enjoy whatever music you like. Keep in mind, however, that music is much bigger than it seems; it can inspire you, it can enlighten you, it can move you, it can touch you, and so we cannot afford to lose it.

What is music? As young people, it is a part of almost all our lives but this

question is one that is not very frequently asked. True, the answer is complicated; it is not nearly as simple as saying that music is merely a collection of sounds.

The countless answers you can have to this question is what makes music so

beautiful, so unique, so personal. And the fact that it can mean whatever you want it

to mean proves the fact that music has meaning.

Aside from making her one of the most talented musicians at UAS, Afyouni’s versatile musical skills are soon to prove her name “big” around the world. Growing up, she listened to many artists, among which are Sam Cooke, Tool, and Sublime. But it was not until one day when, fascinated by her brother’s beat boxing, Afyouni picked up the sticks and started playing the drums. As she recalls, it was something that was “pretty self-explanatory”, and it opened the way for the “other music” which was to follow. This was electronic music, which lead to her significant phase of experimentation as a DJ.

The voice of Logan A., however, did not emerge until much later when, realising that she was incredibly good at imitating voices, Afyouni eventually found her own among the many. At this point, it is hard, or rather needless, to categorise her style under a specific genre. From mellow acoustic/indie (like Tegan and Sarah, Zooey Deschanel, and David Bazan) to more upbeat, jazzy rhythms (like Nina Simone and Miles Davis), she is always experimenting with new sounds and has surprises in store. Indeed, she gives us a sneak peek at a “secret project” she’s working on with three other musicians. According to Afyouni, this project will represent a sound that’s different from what she has been known to sing, with great similarities to The Black Keys and The Kills. Additionally, her home-studio cover album, Sophia Province,

She’s the one whose voice you may have heard from the corner of the stairway beside the music room, filling the hallway with its beautiful, guttural echo. She’s also the one whose skillful drum beats leave you tapping your foot if you happen to be in hearing range. You may better know her by her band name, Logan A. Yes, I am talking about none other than Hana Afyouni, who I had the pleasure to interview on a typical school day.

While enjoying the process of making music, Afyouni knows exactly how to “run the business” as well. Opening up her own t-shirt company with artists already working for her, Afyouni plans to move to Boston (the place to “flourish”, as she says) to study business and independently make herself known to the world “the logical way”, without having to “lose any money, or time, or sleep”.

At the end of the interview, Afyouni gives us all a little advice. “Don’t give up,” she says. “Keep going, but make sure you always have a plan B with everything. Take the path that you like and always take your chances. I would rather do something than not do it.”

She then notes the struggle that many artists face when trying to follow their dreams and ensure financial security at the same time.

Perhaps it is the excitement of an unexpected arrangement of a cover or the sheer joy of hearing her voice that leaves me feeling eagerly responsible to attend as many in-school concerts as I can. The expressive and dynamic performances unique to every song make the experience of watching her perform unforgettable. Logan A. is a name that is here to stay.

Thank you for your letter. What you are describing to me is that something that aligns with your core values has you working at your best and things that do not align with them do the opposite and have you procrastinating or avoiding tasks completely. Your values were developed very early in your life; some studies even claim that they have been developed in a child by the age of seven. Your experiences help to create your values and it is important to remember that your values are unique and your own. Even members of the same family do not have the same values, although they may share common family values, the core values remain unique to the individual.

How does this help you? Unless you take the time to elicit and define what your values are, they will remain unknown to you and your life experiences may continue to seem fruitless and you will begin to want to change yourself as you have described in your letter above. Unfortunately, many people do not know what their core values are and they set themselves unrealistic goals that they are unable to achieve, which then leaves them feeling low, frustrated and sometimes even as if they have failed.

My method of eliciting core values is easy and very effective. Start by taking a piece of paper and pencil and draw a line down the middle of the sheet of paper. On the left side, write down the characteristics of people that you find challenging to be with. I do this because it is always easiest for most people to pinpoint the characteristics in others that they do not like. Don’t stop at just two or three characteristics; ask yourself “what else?” over and over until you have exhausted your list.

Next, write the opposite of each characteristic on the right side of the sheet. This part can be challenging because now, you are asking yourself, “If I am challenged by that characteristic, what would I like them to be like?” Once this is complete, you are half-way through eliciting your core values.

Finally, continue by taking your ideal characteristics list and begin clearly defining what they mean to YOU. I state the word YOU strongly because everyone has the right to define them differently, that is why our core values are unique to each person. Remember, this is not an English assignment. You are not defining what the word means as a vocabulary assignment, you are asking yourself, “What does this mean to me and how would I know that someone is achieving this characteristic?” As you work your way down the list, you may find yourself linking characteristics together because they may mean the same thing. This is fine and very common.

This core values activity is very effective and very useful in helping you to begin understanding why doing some things makes your heart sing while doing other things may make your heart sink. Have fun with it!

Q. Something I’m passionate about will have me delivering with heart and soul. If it doesn’t interest me, I don’t usually put my best into it, and sometimes avoid doing it altogether. This occasionally tends to stand between me and my goals. Even though I know this, I find it hard to change the way I do things.

University expectationsQ. Taking things for granted, I sailed through school and thought I could do the same at university but that did not work. I found myself demoralised and I can’t shake off the feeling that I let my family down and that I am now facing the harsh realities of my consequences. What can I do to help myself get back on the correct track?

Q. I wake up in the morning and I look at what is happening to society. People around me or globally are suffering. While at the same time I will be walking in the mall while children are whining about how they have an iPad and not an iPhone too. It is either me or there is something wrong with society in the modern age? It just depresses me and builds up rage to the point when I think the human race is the worst thing to ever evolve on this planet. What can really be done when charities take and do not give and all people care about is material and not the importance of the person next to them?

I want to start by congratulating you on being so conscious and aware of the sufferings of others. Becoming empathetic towards others is very necessary for our world, and it is something that we should all do much more of. Without sounding harsh and unfeeling, there are always going to be problems with our society that will remain unresolved. These are called perpetual problems. As frustrating as this is, you can do something within yourself that will help you to make a difference. The following exercise is called The Dream Behind Your Complaint.

Start by writing down all of your complaints around this topic. Don’t stop until you have written them all down. Once you have finished, take the sheet of paper and put it out in front of you. Next, ask yourself what all of these complaints mean to YOU. Why are they so important to you? What dream are you hoping for that these complaints are an obstacle for? This part of the exercise requires that you do a lot of inner reflecting. It is not enough to just be vague.

Once you are aware of what the dream is, explore it more. Ask yourself what the dream means to you. Why is the dream so important? What is the world needing and longing for? Continue asking yourself these questions until you become very clear.

Next, look at what you have written and ask yourself, “What have I learned?” Finally, dreaming is a wonderful thing to do but I believe that after we become aware, we must become conscious of our impact and help to create empowering experiences because of our learnings. So I now ask you to brainstorm ways that you can make a difference and help the dream you have learned about become a reality. What actions can you take? Remember that many people walk around in a state of unconsciousness and they are not always as aware of their wider footprint in the world, so try to be gentle with them.

What’s wrong with society?

What you are describing in your letter is a very common concern for students just entering the university lifestyle. For many students, high school was an experience that had teachers and parents guiding them throughout their time at school. On the one hand, this guidance is important and very effective but on the other hand, high school students assume that they will be able to continue sailing through university because there will always be someone there to guide and protect them.

Sit down with a piece of paper and draw two circles and a square. Draw a circle at the top of the page with the heading, My Highest Expectations, and another circle at the bottom of the page with the heading, My Lowest Expectations, and add the square in the centre of the page between the two circles.

Next, fill in each circle by writing what your highest expectations and lowest expectations are for your learning journey at university. Leave the square blank for now. When you have written all of your answers, take a step back and ask yourself, “Am I closet to my highest or to my lowest expectations?” Where do you want to be closest to?

Moving on from here, fill in the square by asking yourself, “If I could be closest to my highest expectations then what COULD I do?” I stipulate the word COULD because at this moment, you are NOT committing to anything. You are just brainstorming ways that COULD bring you closer to your highest expectations.

Finally, look at all of the actions that you COULD do and choose two to three that really interest you and that you are willing to try. As you complete those actions, you may decide to return to the box and complete any of the other actions.

Being dehydrated is not when your lips start cracking and your mouth goes super dry. When that happens, it means that your body is extremely dehydrated. It takes much less than that for your body to be dehydrated. So how do you know when you’re dehydrated?

How much water do you need?

Obviously you will need to replace all the water that your body is using up every day. So how much water do you need? Although the amount of water your body needs is influenced by the amount of exercise and physical activity you get, the environment you live in or illnesses you may have, you still need to get at least eight cups of water a day for ladies and 12 cups of water for guys, along with a normal, nutritious diet.

Is it possible to have too much water?

It is extremely uncommon but possible to overdose on water. If you have excessive amounts, it may overwhelm your kidneys and they may not be able to get rid of all that water.

What does water do in our bodies? • Carries nutrients and oxygen into cells• Humidifies the air in lungs• Assists with metabolism• Guards our vital organ and enables them to absorb all the required nutrients• Controls the temperature of our bodies• Detoxifies• Helps to keep our joints healthy and hydrated

Water is very important to every organ in your body, so if you don’t get enough water in your system, you will get dehydrated, which means that your body will not be able to carry on with its normal functions and you’ll feel tired.

A blonde, out of money and down on her luck after buying air at a real bargain, needed money desperately. To raise cash, she decided to kidnap a child and hold him for ransom.

The work you submit may be published in one8one monthly magazine, in our books or/and on our website. Submissions will not be returned, so please keep a copy for yourself if you need to. Label all your work; interview, poetry, art, article, fiction, non-fiction…etc.

You can email your art of photography as an email attachment, scan items as grayscale line art or color file of at least 300 dpi (resolution) and smaller than 10mb when saved. Do not scan as a halftone. Save all items as a TIFF (.tif), PICT or JPEG file, before sending as an attachment.

You can email a video (no longer than 5 minutes) to us in the following formats: MOV, .AVI, MPEG, and .WMV.

Remember that we completely depend on you, young youth, to send in your writing and make creative contributions.

You can submit your work in three different ways:

Through your school: Written work and art/photos may be submitted directly through your school. Provide your work to your teacher and he/she will be able to guide you.

Through email: You can also send us your work by email, but please make sure you’ve read the guidelines before you do.

Through direct mail: You can send your work through direct mail. Please make sure your work is neatly written or typed and do not forget to include your details.

There are no deadlines to when you submit your work. We accept your submissions all year long. However if the work you send in is specifically for an event or occasion, please try and send it in at least one month prior to the date.

At the end of your work please include the following originality statement to confirm that this is your original work. Please include your full name:

“I, FILL IN WITH FULL NAME certify that the above and/or attached work is entirely original.” You will be able to request anonymity. If for any reason what so ever you do not want your name to be published, your request will be respected, but you must include your name and all the above mentioned information.

-We reserve the right to publish our edited version without your prior approval. -We may not print your name on personal articles and in some cases may change the names to protect other people’s identities. -All material submitted to us becomes the property of one8one. By submitting your work to one8one magazine you are giving us the non-exclusive right to publish your work in any format, including all print, electronic and online media.-Our editorial staff will review all the submissions.
