Why Go Green? The RIGHT Thing to Do

“Global warming is no longer a philosophical threat, no longer a future threat, no longer a threat at all. It’s our reality.”

Why Go Green? The RIGHT Thing to Do

21

[The “green” revolution]… is not about Earth Day concerts. It is not about green issues of magazines. It is not about 205 easy ways to go green. It is not about the latest dot-com gold rush or marketing fad, either. It is a survival strategy. It is about what we do in response to the truly massive challenge that we face to preserve the natural world that has been bequeathed to us. [emphasis added]

Hot, Flat & Crowded, by Thomas Friedman, 2008, pg 397

Why Should You Care?

You are being pressured by the demand to deliver better results & greater value, but at lower costsYou and your company are being compelled to respond to the need for sustainable practices and facilitiesYou have much more influence over a facility’s effect on the environment & the people in the buildings than those who designed/built them

Business Case Basics

1. Well structured reasoning for initiating a project or program

2. Outline of resources to be consumed that will benefit the organization

3. Specifics on who is involved, scope of activities, performance measures, management engagement, and benefits

4. Descriptions of metrics to allow management to measure progress and performance

Especially true for sustainability proposals

What Typically Does NOT work?

“Spray-and-pray” – train everyone on The natural Step framework and sit back to see what happensThe big black hole – Train and then ask for suggestions, but don’t put in place a person/process to respond or give feedback.Disconnected leadership – boss hires a Champion but doesn’t work with his management team to describe expectations and consequences. Champion soon quits!Unrequited expectations – Getting everyone so excited that the business can’t implement or sustain them. Employees leave for “greener” pastures.

Any rough idea of amounts?Who could be your sustainability champion? What is the kick off activity?Describe a successful project outcomeHow would it be made visible? To whom? When will you start this process????
