Fitness

Football Trip to Spain

In January pupils undertook a unit of work on fitness. During this

module, the children explored different methods of how to get fit,

such as circuit training, interval training and skipping. They also

performed different types of fitness tests.

Here is a picture of some of the Upper Transitus’ boys performing

the Multi-Stage Fitness Test.

The Multi-Stage Fitness test is an incremental test

where pupils run back and fourth over 15 meters to

the sound of a bleep that speeds up. The children run

for as long as possible and drop out when they fall

behind the bleep. Below are some of the top scores.

In June, members of the school football

team will be off to Spain to visit the

home of Malaga Football Club.

The trip will be action packed with train-

ing sessions provided by professional

coaches, a stadium tour and a football

fixture against a local school team.

The boys will also enjoy the amazing ho-

tel facilities at Atalaya Park Golf Hotel &

Resort, which has been used by many

professional football teams as their base

for pre-season or mid-season training

camp.

Super League Netball Trip On the 10th February the F2 & F3 Netball squad visited Hert-

fordshire University for a netball Super league fixture, the Hert-

fordshire Mavericks were playing against Manchester Thunders.

The visit was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to sharpen

up on their tactical knowledge of the game and see how ad-

vanced skills can be applied effectively in a match situation.

The score finished at 38 - 48, with the Thunders winning the

game. The girls all had a fantastic time and were able to watch

some professional England Netball players. Overall, the girls

were a pleasure to take to the game and all came back with

new ideas and skill to put into their own netball.

The Football Squad experienced both highs and lows during the recent

Enfield Borough 7-a-side competition with an incredibly spirited perform-

ance.

The group stage was made up of eight matches with the top four teams

qualifying for knockout stages.

The boys fared well, with our defence, made up of Hakan Aknar, Tom

Green and Tony Dinh resilliant throughout, only conceding three goals on

their way to three victories, three draws and only two defeats. The pick of

the results were 1-0 victories over Eversley, Eldon and George Spicer.

Such a performance ensured a fourth spot finish and qualification to the

knockout stage.

Unfortunately, the boys were defeated in the quarter final but bearing in

mind the majority of the squad were a year or two younger than the op-

position, the result was greater than most would have expected. Well

done, boys!

On the 29th March, almost 200 pupils com-

peted in the Annual St. John’s Swimming Gala.

The event consisted of 94 races, which in-

cluded front crawl, backstroke, breast stroke

and relay. The standard was amazing, not just

from the winners but also from the children

who were unable to swim competently at the

start of the academic year. Well done to all

of the children that competed in the gala.

Ski Trip - Morzine On 29th January, F3 and 1st Form boys and girls

accompanied Mrs. Tardios, Mr. Tardios Jnr, Mrs.

Farrenden, Mr. Hodgson, Miss Pym and Miss

Collins to Morzine in the French Alps.

The seven day trip started by flying into Geneva

airport and travelling by coach to the hotel, set

in a picturesque village, covered in fresh winter

snow. Morzine has recently had a new lift sys-

tem put on slopes, which was exciting for St.

John’s, as this meant more time on the slopes.

All pupils skied with great control and had a

fantastic experience.

Each of the pupils at the end of the skiing trip

received a skiing award, a badge and a booklet,

which can be updated as they develop their ski-

ing ability. A special mention must go to Grace

Alexander and Henry Jonscher for achieving a

special gold award as they had already attained

all available badges.

As well as practising their skiing, the pupils had a

opportunity to watch the ski instructors show-

ing why they are instructors with their amazing

skiing skills and looking at how skiing has devel-

oped throughout the ages. The pupils also got

to try a variety of different food and swim in the

indoor/outdoor pool of the Hotel. Overall, the

trip was a great success, with all pupils and

teachers enjoying the experience immensely.

Sports’ Pupils of the Term Awards

Harry Baldock-Proud has had an outstanding first year at St. John’s Preparatory

school in sport and is the worthy recipient of the Sports’ Pupil of the Term Award

for Boys Sport.

He has continued to play a crucial role in the success of the school football team,

displaying a good all-round level of ability and he never shies away from a tackle!

During P.E. Lessons, Harry has impressed us with his level of fitness in lessons,

scoring 14.4 on the Multi-Stage Fitness Test and always gives 100% effort.

The term was nicely rounded off for Harry at The Annual School Swimming Gala,

where he performed magnificently, picking up a Gold in Back Stroke and a Silver in

Breast stroke.

Well Done, Harry!

Lily Harbron is a determined athlete, who is very enthusiastic about sport. She

always strives to improve her technical ability and is committed to representing

St. John’s School in a variety of sports.

Lily has displayed a high level of ability in Netball this term, representing the

school in fixtures. Lily was also a crucial member of the netball team at the U11’s

North London Independent Schools Netball Tournament . At this fixture she

demonstrated fantastic defending skills, carrying out skillful interceptions. She was

an asset to the team and helped lead the team to victory.

This term was the annual St. John’s Swimming Gala, where Lily performed out-

standingly, picking up a gold medal in the 25 metre Front Crawl and a silver in 25

metre Breaststroke. This demonstrates that Lily is an all round athlete.

Overall, Lily is a joy to teach in lessons and has produced work of an excellent

standard. Well done!

Cricket In June, the F2 & F3 members of the School

Cricket Squad will visit Lords Cricket ground -

‘The Home of Cricket’, to watch England take on

Sri Lanka in the 1st test match of the English

summer.

This will be an amazing experience for the chil-

dren, allowing them to see how it is done by

some of the best cricketers in the world.

They will also enjoy the atmosphere of the

crowds and hopefully this will inspire some of

our boys to become future top class cricketers

themselves!

In November 2013, Madeline Dean was chosen to be part of the gymnastics squad from Tan-

glin Trust School, Singapore which competed in the Federation of British International Schools

in Asia (FOBISIA) Annual Gymnastics Competition in Bangkok, Thailand.

The competition included gymnasts from Thailand, China, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore

and took place over two days. Boys and girls competed across a range of gymnastics disciplines

with the girls performing on Floor, Bars, Beam and Vault.

The girls were scored individually for each discipline and these scores were then combined to

provide an overall individual performance score. There was also a combined team score, which

took into account the individual scores of each member of the Tangin Trust School team.

The competition was of a very high standard and featured potential Olympians in some of the

age groups. But most importantly, it offered boys and girls from the many International schools

operating throughout Asia the opportunity to meet new people from different countries and

cultures and gave them the chance to experience the thrill of competing in an International

competition.

Madeline came 3rd overall in her level and age group and in doing so helped her team to come

2nd overall which was a great achievement for Tanglin Trust School.

MADELINE DEAN - GYMNASTICS

JACOB HAYNES - FENCING

Jacob has been fencing for 2 years.

Initially, Jacob trained once a week but he is now a member of Newham Fencing Club and

trains twice a week alongside many members of the Great British Fencing team. Since he

started to compete in competitions, Jacob has won numerous medals.

At the end of 2013, Jacob was ranked 9th in 2013 out of 160 boys who competed in the Leon

Paul U11 Junior series. Some of his more notable success have been winning the Hertford-

shire Junior Championship for U10 in 2013, Gold at the Leon Paul Junior series earlier this

year and silver in the Leon Paul Junior Team event.

Jacob enjoys fencing because it provides everything he is looking for in terms of physical exer-

cise, competition and need to develop skills and techniques.

The ballet lessons comprise of three

sections; Warm-up with emphasis on

posture and stance coupled with ballet

stretching; Free Movement, which con-

sists of students’ improvisation and

interpretation of a piece of music or

stimulus and travelling sequence based

on locomotor skills with rhythmical

patterning.

The main focus of the lessons is to

raise students awareness of body align-

ment by embedding the ballet tech-

nique in each activity.

The children really seem to be enjoying

learning new skills relating to Ballet and

putting them into practice.

Summer Term

In the Summer term, we will be focusing

on Athletics and striking & fielding games

In Athletics, children will be developing

their throwing and jumping as well as one

against one and other and also working in a

team when performing relays. All of these

skills will prepare them for Sports day on

FRIDAY 20th JUNE.

During striking and fielding lessons, pupils will be developing their basic throwing,

catching and hitting skills and applying the

skills to game situations. During the

games they will learn about tactics, rules,

scoring and working as a team . All of

these skills will help them to compete in

the end of term Interhouse Competition.

Over the Easter break, it would be great if

you can find time to take your child to the

park and have a go yourselves with a bat

and ball; this will give your child a great

head start before the summer term!!

From All of us in The Sports Department, We wish you a fantastic Easter! Mr. Ian Russell Head of Prep. School P.E.
