Whether you join one of over 80 diverse sports clubs and societies, pick up a pen and write for the WesternEye, have your voice heard by getting on the mic and djing for Hub Radio, become qualified to drive a minibus or run an event for students, UWESU has something for you.

Sports and Activities at UWESU are about having fun and getting involved in something outside of your course during your time at University. If you have a sporting pedigree or you are passionate about media, campaigns or entertainments, then we will have the perfect activity for you to become immersed in. Such is the diversity of our student population and variety of their interests that you will always be able to find something that matters to you; and if you can’t then we can offer you the support and experience to help you start something from scratch.

This handbook is your guide to all these opportunities. Use it wisely: knowledge is power!

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SPORTS & ACTIVITIES HERE AT

PRESIDENTS’ INTRODUCTIONS

Debbie Robertson: Sports and Activities [email protected] 32 831403

Colin Stevens: Sports [email protected] 32 82719

Helen Seacombe: Volunteer Support [email protected] 32 81665

Activities President: Terry [email protected]; 0117 32 82536

Hey there, my name is Terry AKA TerryAkkie. I started here at UWE in 2006 and since then I have worked for the Students’ Union, be it on the bar, kitchen, or as a DJ I have always aspired to help students enjoy their time at UWE. By being elected into this position I can devote myself to that aspiration in a full time sabbatical role.

What do I do? • Support all societies within UWESU, We currently have 40 societies here at UWESU.• Encourage the creation of new societies. • Student Welfare (if you’ve got a problem, and no-one else can help you, maybe you can hire...) No, in all seriousness I am here to help, if I cannot personally I can put you in touch with relevant people who can.• Campaigns: Got a burning issue you want addressed? Or just simply want to get your voice heard? It’s my job to help you do it.• RAG: Raising and Give is aimed at raising money for charity. This is done by various events staged throughout the year. I support this and fully encourage anyone to participate.

Ultimately I am here for you. If you want to talk about anything regarding the above motioned points, or just want to chat, email me.

Elected by you in the spring term alongside the Student Representative Council (SRC) President and SRC Vice-President, Terry and Nadia represent you in the day to day running of sports and activities across the University, at other institutions and in the local community.

Sports President: Nadia [email protected]; 0117 32 82915

Hello, my name’s Nadia (AKA Go Nads), What do I do? This is a full time position that the student membership have elected. I am here to encourage the development of sport and make sure that students are at the heart of UWESU, whether you are a club member, committee member, or a student that just wants to get active and make change!I co-ordinate the Varsity Series, Sports Awards Dinner, Free Sport Week, and chair the Sports Council. I am part of the St Matts Relocation Board (where decisions are made about the move) and I also am in charge of budgetary decisions, along with the sports executive.

How is my role different to the staff? I offer the representation and strategic development of the Union and Sports & Activities Centre. I am also here to do what the membership want; if you feel

something should be changed or have ideas then I act as your voice and try to make these changes. The staff are the operational force that facilitate the union goals, your ideas and facilitate clubs and societies.

If you don’t want to come up to the Students’ Union, myself and the Activities President will be doing ‘Sabb on a Sofa’ once every two weeks where you can come have a casual chat with us: keep checking online for updates of where we will be!Remember this is YOUR Sports and Activities centre and we are here to enhance YOUR university years.

VOLUNTEERINGSPORTS AND SOCIETIES

What does that get you? The Sports and Activities CouncilsUWESU allows you to take part in your chosen sport or activity in a safe, controlled and professional environment. Both the Sports Council and the Activities Council act as your forum to express queries or concerns to ensure your club or activity is run successfully. Last year’s councils passed motions which led to a Swimming Pool Campaign, Club Honorary Associate Membership and a reduction in Society membership fees.

Want to start your own activity?UWESU offers a wide range of groups and activities to get involved in, but if the activity you’re looking for isn’t currently available then why not set one up yourself? It’s easy to start an activity: the four steps outlined in the Quick Guide are all it takes for you to get there. There is plenty of support for you along the way, too; the Sports and Activities Centre are on hand to help the process along and then to ensure that you get all the know-how you need to kick start your activities, whether that’s a welcome meeting, first trip or a social event.

Vehicle QualificationsA big part of sport and society activities are the trips they undertake. To help you get to your destinations we offer minibus and people carrier courses for members of our sports and societies. As long as you are over 19 with two years’ driving experience for the people carrier and 21 with 3 years’ driving experience for the minibus we can offer first class tuition to help you pass the tests and get you on your way.

First Aid CoursesTo help our sports and societies take part in the widest possible range of activities, we offer members national First Aid qualifications. Emergency First Aid at Work courses are run by our instructor on a first come, first served basis. For full details on how to become trained, visit the website.

Swim TestsIf you join any of our watersport clubs, you must complete a swim test for safety reasons. That way we can be doubly sure that you’re honest when you assure the club committee that you did your 400 metres badge! The swim test only involves swimming a few lengths and treading water, so don’t be put off. This year swim tests will take place the week after Freshers’ Fair. If you join a watersport after the swim tests have been carried out, inform your committee and they will arrange a swim test for you at a later date.

How do you join?Firstly, take a look at the listings and see what takes your fancy. Your next step is to attend Frenchay Freshers Fair on Friday 24th September (11am – 4pm, ECC); all sports and societies will be present for you to talk to and get a feel for what they’re offering.

Then simply go to www.uwesu.org/register and follow the simple steps to register, first as a member of UWESU, and then as a member of your chosen sport and societies. At this point you’ll also be able to register your interest in other activities such as volunteering, RAG and media, which you can read about later in this book.

For your 4 step guide to set up a sport or society see:www.uwesu.org/get_involved/sports/start_your_own_sports_clubwww.uwesu.org/get_involved/societies/start_a_society

Sports and SocietiesOne of the most popular ways to get involved at UWE is to join a sport or society, and with over 80 to choose from there is bound to be one that is ideal for you. Whether you’re after regular competitive action, would rather reignite a long lost interest or try something totally new there will be a group of students that can support and help you reach your goal. Clubs and Societies at UWESU are run for students, by students and so they are the perfect way for you to get involved, whether on the committee or as a member of Sports or Societies Exec. Detailed listings for all our sports clubs and societies can be found on page 18.

VOLUNTEERINGUWESU Volunteering has a student-led focus so it’s up to you what you want to get involved in. You can even set up your own project – with help of course!

Your UWESU Volunteer Support Officer can help you to choose the best volunteering for you. You may want to learn a new skill, get some work experience, make a difference in your local community... or, have a bright idea for your own project, campaign or event. If so, you can get help with project planning, apply for a budget of up to £100 and gain leadership and team working skills.

Also, there are many volunteering opportunities open to members of Clubs and Societies. Over the past two years drama, dance and cheerleading have led their own after school clubs in primary schools; trampolining, netball and women’s football have run sessions at school sports days; OUTUWE have put on a World AIDS day campaign and forensic science hosted their own lecture with a guest speaker.

If you are a member of a sport you also have the opportunity to gain coaching qualifications for free in return for volunteering. Last year members from many sports honed their new skills at local schools benefiting the community while helping their CVs.

To try out different types of volunteering come along to one-off action days in the community, working with local organisations to make an impact in just one day. The first action day will be Saturday 2nd October.

UWESU work in partnership with the University and the Centre for Sport to provide the UWE Volunteering service. Through UWE Volunteering there are a whole host of opportunities for you to get involved.

For more information on volunteering, contact: [email protected] or phone 0117 32 81665

RAISE AND GIVERaise and Give (RAG) gives you the best opportunity to raise money for charity while having a great time. Run by committed and enthusiastic students and supported by UWESU, the RAG committee looks to raise money while having the most amount of fun possible.

The CharitiesThe RAG committee chooses up to four charities to benefit from the money raised across the academic year. In 2009—2010 the charities were:

Throughout the year RAG have a number of set events that they will always put on, culminating in February’s RAG Week, a collection of wide ranging events that incorporate anything from cabaret to pizza eating. Last year saw the inaugural Jailbreak event which saw over 60 teams try and get as far away from the University without spending any money. The winners got to New York and in total over £12,000 was raised for the charity Young Minds.

How you can get involved?Although RAG already have a few ideas up their sleeves they’d love to hear any that you have! Is there something you’d like to set up? Is there some idea burning inside but you’re not sure how to put it in to action? If you have an idea for some way to raise money for charity then we would be more than happy to hear it. Whether it is a street collection or a record attempt we can help you get your ideas off the ground.

Send any ideas to the Activities President and we’ll try and help get your ideas up and running: [email protected]

STUDENT MEDIA

WesternEyeGetting involved in your student newspaper, WesternEye, is your chance to make your mark at UWE. Produced monthly, the WesternEye has been running for eight years and is written by students for students. It is editorially independent from the University and Students’ Union, and thus supports a culture of open accountability between students, the University and UWESU.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience in journalism and expand your creativity by bringing fresh ideas to the newspaper and being part of a committed and lively team. WesternEye will keep you informed of current UWESU and University news, events, campaigns, UWESU sports and societies, lifestyle, features, and much more all crammed into one exciting newspaper! A new website is in the process of being created, but previous versions are available from: www.westerneye.net/downloads

WestworldWestworld was previously an independent UWESU magazine, but unfortunately the recession and budgetary constraints mean this is no longer possible. However, it has been kept alive as a supplement of WesternEye, featuring sharp magazine style design and covering topics like art, music, culture, fashion, theatre and photography. It also exhibits work from UWE students.

Getting involved in WesternEye and Westworld is easy, just contact the Editor, George Rowe, on: 0117 32 82842 or email: [email protected]

Student MediaUWESU Student Media encompasses the student newspaper, WesternEye, and its magazine style supplement WestWorld, the radio station, Hub Radio, and the UWESU website. All these forms of media provide a wide range of opportunities for you to get involved in, so if you fancy trying something new or have an ambition to work in the media then we want to hear from you.

Hub RadioThink you’ve got what it takes to be the next Chris Moyles, Annie Mac or Zane Lowe? If so then get involved with Hub Radio, UWE’s pride of AM and internet radio station. Join the Hub Radio team and you can enjoy working in all sorts of roles, from presenting and producing to graphic design and creative management.

Listen to us on www.hubradio.co.uk or on you can pick us up on 1449AM if you are around Frenchay Campus.

We broadcast throughout the year. Consider us the voice and ears that link you, the UWE students with the best that Bristol and UWESU has to offer. With ticket giveaways and live events, plus loads of wicked tunes, why wouldn’t you want to be a part of it all? If you want to get involved then contact the station manager Pete Johnson at [email protected]

The Student Media Centre at Frenchay provides a home to most of the student media activities and can be found in room 5F9 (top floor of UWESU). To find out more about student media visit: www.uwesu.org/studentmedia

Each year UWE and Bristol University go head to head over a whole series of sporting activities competing for the Varsity Trophies.

Varsity is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Bristol and UWE sporting talent. However, Varsity is much more than this; it is an event which builds relationships between two excellent universities on and off the sporting field. It demonstrates to the local community the positive impact the two universities of Bristol have upon the local landscape. All the above is achieved with the mutual goal in mind to raise money for local charities.

In 2010 16 sports clubs took up the challenge:

The ‘Battle of the water’ (Varsity Boat Race) always draws one of the biggest crowds of the year, as do the Rugby and Football matches at the Memorial Stadium, home of Bristol Rovers F.C and Bristol Rugby.

The 2011 Series is shaping up to be bigger and better then ever, with the programme to include a ‘Varsity Day’ where a whole host of Sporting competitions will be held on the same day at a central location. Watch out for further details when announced; put that date in your diary and come along and support UWESU Sport!

Combat Karate Okinawan Goju Ryu or ‘Combat Karate’ is a comprehensive martial art and is concerned purely with effective self-defence. It encompasses both striking techniques (punching, kicking, elbowing, kneeing etc) and wrestling techniques (throwing, locking, choking, strangling etc) to form a fully-rounded fighting system. Training incorporates learning the techniques from across this martial spectrum, and practising them in the form of sparring and grappling, together with use of pads and exercise. Weapons work is also studied, both in terms of how to use sticks and knives (and other weapons), and in terms of how to defend against armed attack. New members are always welcome, whether new to martial arts or having experience in this or any other system. Gradings take place every term, so there are plenty of opportunities to advance through the belts. (Grading is not mandatory however, and everybody is free to progress at their own pace).Where and when they meet: Combat Karate will have a weekly two-hour session at UWE, A full list of training times and places can be obtained by visiting our website or by sending an e-mail to the address below.Membership Fee: £5; £3 per sessionEmail: [email protected]: www.combat-karate.co.uk

Jiu Jitsu Jitsu is one of the few physical activities where women and men take part on an equal footing. It is a ‘team sport’ because you can only improve by working together with other club members, but it’s an individual activity because your progress and development is individual to you. Jiu Jitsu was the system of Self Defence, developed and practiced by the Samurai in Japan. With a wide syllabus employing locks, strikes and throws Jitsu is not a competitive sport, its practiced as an effective system for modern self defence. All martial arts promise to provide self defence, fitness, co-ordination and self confidence. So why is Jitsu different? Firstly if it’s not enjoyable you won’t keep doing it, we make training fun.
