News from the Principal…. It has been a busy fortnight with much happening within the school. I have been working closely with Ms Bannon in the Foundation to Grade 2 Classroom during literacy time. The students are loving reading their books to me and I am thrilled to see even the youngest students achieving success and beaming with pride as they recognise words from the explicit teaching that is occurring.

It was also great to read the stories that the children are writing in class. It was evident that the children are not only able to recognise by sight some key words in their reading, but can hear the sounds in some words and attempt to spell them in their writing.

Volunteers In School

There are many people showing an interest in volunteering to support our college. Last year, we undertook the work that was necessary to ensure that we comply with the Child-Safe Regulations. All volunteers will need to show their Working with Children’s Check card and sign a Code-Of-Conduct form that clearly outlines the acceptable and unacceptable behaviours. To support and ensure that there is a clear understanding of what it means to be a volunteer at our college, and the role that you would be playing, information sessions will be held each term. Look out for the dates in upcoming newsletters.

PBIS

Our college continues to recognise the importance of teaching our students, your children, to behave in ways that are reflective of our college values of being respectful, responsible and resilient. Daily we are challenged to model these behaviours to the children and young people in our care. This can be difficult, however, I strongly believe that when things are most challenging it is more important than ever to remain respectful and responsible. This is when we show how resilient we are. We would love your support in ensuring that you take up this challenge, also.

Our first blitz for the year is focussing on remaining in school grounds. This relates directly to the safety of our students. A canteen provides lunch on a daily basis and we also run Breakfast Club four days a week.

Congratulations to the award winners in the previous weekly draws and thank you for demonstrating behaviours that make Rushworth P-12 College a great place to be.

Family/Student/Teacher Interviews

Information is included in this newsletter that relates to the upcoming Family/Student/Teacher interviews. This is a great opportunity to make appointments with your child’s teachers to talk about what they have achieved and what the areas for improvement are. Please make the time to attend this event – your involvement is crucial in supporting your child to achieve the best outcomes they can.

Primary Meet ‘N Greet

Thank you to all the families that attended last night’s Meet ‘N Greet in the Primary area. It provides another opportunity for you to meet the teachers who work with your children every day. Forging a positive, respectful relationship between school and home is one of the ways that we can work together in pursuit of excellence.

College Council

We still have three parent member vacancies and I am putting out a further notice for expressions of interest to fill

these positions. Nomination forms are available at the college and must be received by

Wednesday 15 March, 2017. We want you to be involved.

Kind regards, Leanne Miller, Principal Currently reading: The Invaders by John Flanagan – Book 2 of the Brotherband series Recently finished: The Outcasts by John Flanagan – Book 1 of the Brotherband series

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Rushworth P-12 College is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by September 2017.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers.

Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll.

Information will be sent home with students shortly, but now is a great time to start your own little challenge.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

For any additional information on the Challenge and how it will operate at our school, please contact the following teachers:
