The fundraising strategic planning
- Idea definition
- Main Work Packages
- Tasks and partners
- Budget
- Abstract
- Participants’ Portal
- Risks evaluation
THE IDEA = THE DREAM
"You are never given a wish
without also being given the
power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however."
Richard Bach, Illusions
"Three people were at work on a construction site.
All were doing the same job, but when each was asked what the job
was, the answers varied.
Breaking rocks, the first replied.
Earning my living, the second said.
Helping to build a cathedral, said the third"
Peter Schultz
THE IDEA = THE DREAM
"Your customers dream of a happier and better life. Don’t move products. Enrich lives."
Steve Jobs, Apple
"If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of
the sea." Antoine De Saint Exupéry
The fundraising strategic planning
Project Impact identification = define the main features of your project and the
impact it will have in its specific operational context integration through
sport
Indicators definition = on the basis of the project objectives, specifically define
the indicators – both qualitative and quantitative – that will demonstrate the
final results achievement (or not)
Fundraising channels identification: choose the best channel, depending on :
• the contribution programs you already know
• the funding lines that are easy to present (even if they have lower budget)
• the budget you may decide to dedicate to pay fundraising experts that will
help you presenting the proposals (above all for contribution channels that
have a high percentage of possible approval - % of redemption )
The analysis and the choice criteria of the most
adequate fundraising channels and tools
• There is no magic wand!
• The choice criteria have to be adequate, depending on specific and contingent sport associations’s needs
• A perfect fundraising tool doesn’t exist!
• But there exist tools and funds perfect - or partially useful - for the specific case or project (public funds bids and programs, private funds bids, crowdfunding, project financing, sponsorships,…)
The analysis and the choice criteria of the most
adequate fundraising channels and tools
• The fundraising monitoring has to be:
• Constant
• Periodic
• Precise
• Focused
• Disciplined
• The fundraising monitoring has not to be:
• Superficial
• Una tantum
• Synthetic
• Vague
• Not focused on the needs and the objectives of the sport association
The analysis and the choice criteria of the most
adequate fundraising channels and tools
The strategic monitoring – and selection - approach has to be based on:
– Lobby and contacts network
– Subscription to focused mailing lists, newsletters, suppliers registers
– Daily reading of bulletins and public gazettes/magazines
– Studies and market surveys reading
– Ad hoc public funds monitoring subscriptions
– Market analysis
– Others (depending on the individual country)
Specific monitoring tools
– Internet Sites: Cordis, national istitutional sites (es. in Italy
www.lazioinnova.it, Pimega site and newsletter), European and worldwide sites (the Worldwide Bank site, the Horizon portal, the Erasmus portal,….)
– Public organizations portals and digital platforms: municipalities, regions, government
– Publications
– Anticipations constant check
– Information desks
– Crowdfunding portals
– Private big foundations sites
THE PRO-ACTION CONCEPT
- To «look for» the information
- Constant, continuous and periodic monitoring
- Networks activation (through institutions, direct contacts, partners, …)
- Discipline and lucidity in the whole pro-active process
- Monitoring planning
- Bids scheme
- Project summary
- Partnerships scheme

STRATEGIC GUIDELINES FOR WRITING, PREPARING AND APPLYING FOR A HORIZON 2020 PROPOSAL
- Put in place and constantly use the operational tools

The euro projecting process – Basic knowledge:
• English
• Excel (basic) and Internet navigation
• Planning, management (PDCA, never-ending improvement,
Lean approaches,..), communication methodologies

Conclusions
The main key actions to efficiently manage fundraising are:
- To have a good project idea to realize and go forward
- To correctly select the best funding bid and program
(thanks to 2h/week or an external expert)
- To most specifically complete all parts of the proposal
form
- To activate a follow up process
