PURPOSE

ABOUT THE POWER RISING SUMMIT

At critical moments in history, Black women have always found a way to come together, define a new path forward, and make an impact in ways that change the world. How-ever, not since the Combahee River Collec-tive statement was written 40 years ago have we assembled with the purpose of crafting an agenda explicitly for Black women that recognizes our unique needs.

It is in the tradition of these women that we come together again. Just as the times called for them to act; the urgency of this moment of political and social unrest has called us forward to unite Black women across ethnicity, religion, sexuality, age, political affiliation, socio-economic status and gender experience.

With great intention and at the height of purpose, it is our mission to use the Power Rising Summit to leverage our collective wisdom in ways that allow us to think strategically around the development of actionable avenues towards the maximization of power. For ourselves, for our families, for our communities, and for our future, we commit, to once again, put in the work necessary to create change now and for generations to come.

The Summit will be organized around five pillars: Business and Economic Empowerment; Culture, Community, and Society; Education, Technology,

and Innovation; Health & Wellness; andPolitical Empowerment.

Dynamic speakers and empowering plenary sessions will explore these topics, while engaging discussions and interactive workshops will educate and inform the delegates and support them in developing individual and

community goals.

All of the programming and speakers will be intentionally diverse and intergenerational to represent the broad spectrum and experiences of

Black women and girls. By the end of the Summit, we will have developed a clear call to action for Black women – complete with specific, actionable

steps – designed to leverage, demonstrate, and build our social, economic, and power.

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

2016 found 94% of Black women voters exercising their franchise. At a time when the safety, health, and economic security of Black women, girls, and femmes continues to be under attack – many of us were left wondering, what we could do to reclaim our power and our voices. And so, 35 Black women leaders, educators, clergy, activists, and politicians came together to discuss how to create the national gathering that we all need. Atlanta is the capital of the Southeast, a city of the future with strong ties to its past. For more than four decades, Atlanta has been linked to the Civil Rights movement and is home to a host of activists and advocates for civil and human rights. In the turbulent 60s, Atlanta was “the city too busy to hate.” And today, in the 21st century, Atlanta is the “city not too busy to care.” Often called, the “hub of the Black South” Atlanta has hosted some of the largest and most impactful progressive gatherings in the country; and so we couldn’t think of a better location for the Power Rising Summit!
