A celebration not to be missed

This is your chance to be a part of Red, the inaugural fundraising gala, and help us raise vital funds for Queenslanders in need.

It will be an evening where you will hear inspirational and heart breaking stories from some of our Red Bag recipients and amazing clients as well as be entertained and dined. You will also have the opportunity to “give back” by participating in the live or silent auctions or purchasing a raffle ticket.

In 2016 over 1,600 Red Bag Hampers were distributed to Queenslanders in need. In 2017 we need your support in helping us reach our target of 6,000.

Red is an opportunity for corporates, Wesley Mission Queensland supporters, partners and suppliers to come together and celebrate the joy of giving and helping those less fortunate.

A Red Bag Story

Katie has two children (8 and 6). She left her partner due to domestic violence and lifestyle issues; he was regularly using drugs, and becoming increasingly violent. She has also been caring for her sister’s children (13 and 11), as the children have been removed by Child Safety Services due to domestic violence and chronic neglect. Katie works part time in a local business and receives a very small wage. She is behind on the rent, and the family have been surviving on very little. Katie also has almost no personal support and suffers from depression and loneliness. Katie went to Emergency Relief (ER) hoping to receive toys and a Red Bag. After taking part in ER’s interview process, Katie received a number of Red Bags, fresh meat, and a large box of fruit and vegetables. In addition, she chose three toys each for her children and toys for her nieces. ER had purchased substantial gifts suitable for adolescents, including mobile phones, and one of these was given to Katie for her eldest niece. Katie has made an appointment with ER’s financial resilience counselling program, and she also had the opportunity for a one-on-one session with one of our counsellors. Katie was very appreciative of both the toys and the Red Bags. She was also very excited about linking to the Financial Resilience Counselling program and started by engaging with the counsellor on site. She also made a commitment to visit with a local counsellor for support – a strategy developed in the brief counselling session, where she made some links to that service.

Wesley Mission Queensland has been providing support and care for the Queensland community formore than 100 years. Since our inception in 1907 in the roots of the Albert Street Methodist Church in Brisbane, we have been living our mission by supporting people on the margins of our society.

We support more than 100,000 people per year including youth and families, people living with adisability, the unemployed, isolated and mentally ill. We support people living with disadvantage who have nowhere else to turn and families of children with life-limiting conditions.
