Whether you are local or visiting the area, we hope the Summer Festival programme offers you lots to enjoy, along with the chance to get to know one of the most invigorating parts of London.

This year we are delighted to have Early Opera Company and Robin Rimbaud join us as our Associate Artists. Led by international opera conductor Christian Curnyn, Early Opera Company present a baroque feast with the brilliance of Handel’s Susanna in Christ Church Spitalfields, Monteverdi re-conjured for a toddling audience and Bach’s Coffee Cantata complete with artisan coffee. Robin Rimbaud, known to many as Scanner, invites a

range of artists to respond to pieces including John Dowland’s Flow my tears with new works. Both Associate Artists promise, in different ways, to explore music written over more than 400 years in a very contemporary way, through the prism of Spitalfields.

Alongside is much more music, both the familiar and some brand new commissions; lots of chances to participate; and events, which explore Spitalfields and local life. Music resounds in some of the most intriguing spaces in London, from underground gems such as Hoxton Hall to the Georgian front rooms of Spitalfields and the newly revived Village Underground.

There are many people who support Spitalfields Music and I am grateful to them, as without this, our work simply would not happen. Most of our year-round Learning & Participation programme is free to participants and our Festivals offer a third of tickets for free or £5. The generosity of public and private funders makes this possible — thank you all!

I look forward to welcoming you to the Summer Festival in June.

The Orlando Consort’s programme of music from 1250-1550 features beautiful religious works and lively secular pieces that document all aspects of food, including feasting, shopping, recipes and table manners. Their culinary journey takes them from medieval France to early renaissance Italy by way of Burgundy and England, surprisingly the ‘food capital’ of the age. After a diversion to the Iberian peninsula, they conclude in Germany with lively songs that are a true celebration of ale and... eggs!

Early Opera Company Christian Curnyn director Whitechapel Coffee Company JS Bach Cantata BWV 211: Coffee Cantata Opening their Associate Artist series, Early Opera Company celebrate two of the most important arrivals in Germany during the 18th century: Johann Sebastian Bach and a newfangled drink called coffee! In Leipzig, Zimmermann’s Coffee House was the place to get a caffeine fix and also hear compositions from the soirées of the Collegium Musicum. It was for this ensemble that Bach wrote his Coffee Cantata warning fathers in the highly caffeinated audience of the terrible dangers if they let their daughters near such a stimulating drink. Following the performance, baristas from the Whitechapel Coffee Company will showcase caffeinated inspiration of a different kind — the art behind the perfect cup of coffee.
