When I was in high school, I wouldcountdown the hours until Friday afternoon. The hands of the clock never seemed to move

fast enough! When the bell dismissed the masses from school, ahandful of other teenage guys and I would run to our cars and

drive straight to the home of our youth leader. There we wouldspend the rest of the afternoon in his living room. We would eatand laugh together. We would study Scripture and pray together. When a classmate of ours was killed in a car accident, wegrieved together. When spring arrived, we took our dates to the

prom together. When graduation came, we celebrated together. In short, we simply "did life" together and, to this day, the guysin that small group are dear friends of mine.

That small group established a lifelong pattern for me.

Wherever I happened to be in lifecollege, graduate school, or

beyondI made it both a point and priority to seek fellowshipwith a handful of other Christian men. (In fact, a member of mysmall group from seminary, Kent McKeever, is the one who firstintroduced me to Woodmont Christian Church and paved theway for my joining staff.) It has been in these small groups that

the words of Psalm 133:1 have rung truest in my life"Howgood and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!"

For several months, in this column for The Spire, I havefeatured just some of the small groups that make this churchso special. For example, we have talked about the FellowshipDinner Groups, the Women's Prayer Group, the Circles ofPrayer, the Heavenly Helpers, the Super Somebodies, NashvilleTools for Schools, and Restore Ministries small groups. This

month, I want to turn the spotlight on some of the small groupsthat are just for men and some of them that just for women.

Ladies first. For decades, Christian Women's Fellowship(C.W.F.) has been the largest organization of women within thechurch. These women are some of the church's most dedicatedmembers. The women of C.W.F. meet altogether on the first

Tuesday of each month, and then in small groupsor circlesonce per month. I have had the privilege of meeting with severalof these circles (I'm meeting with another one this week!) and Iam continually impressed. In these small groups, women formclose relationships, share table fellowship, study the Bible, praytogether, participate in missions, and care for each other in times

    of need.

It used to be said that behind every good man is a goodwoman; well, I say that behind every strong church are a numberof strong women! Scripture tells of many women who served

side-by-side Christ and the apostlesLydia, Priscilla, Joanna,Susanna, and others. Personally, I doubt they had anything onthe women of C.W.F. In so many ways, the church has been

    built by their labor.

There are also several small groups for men. On Mondafternoon, the self-described "geezers" of the church meet in tBoard Room. If you look around the room, you will see someWoodmont's most distinguished church members. Ostensib

the geezers meet to discuss a theological bookNearing Ho

by Billy Graham, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, aothersbut they meet just as much to bond with each otherfellowship. To join, you don't have to have gray hair; you juhave to be old at heart!

If "old at heart" does not describe you, fear not! O

Wednesday, a number of mensome single, many with you

children, others middle-aged, and a few retiredmeet early in morning. They can attest that there is no better way to start tday than with Christian fellowship, an excursion into the pagof Scripture, and a warm biscuit. Each of these small grou

provides the opportunity to connect with others on a perso

level, learn about the Lord together, and serve together in hkingdom. In many ways, they hearken back two thousand yeto another small group of men that changed the world forever.

Friends: Male or female, it does not matter. What matters

Christian communitydeep and real and true. What mattersthat your life is woven together with the lives of others, formia beautiful tapestry of faith. A single thread does not amountmuch. It is lonely, lifeless, and limp. One can even sense yearning to fulfill the purpose for which it was made, namely,

be inextricably connected with others. On the other hand, whmany threads are deeply connected with each other, the strengwarmth, and beauty of the fabric produced is a great goo

So, seize the opportunity to weave yourself into Woodmonbeautiful tapestry of faith. Join a small group today!

"And the one who had much did not have too

much. And the one who had little did not have

    too little."Exodus 16:18

When I was in seminary, I had the privilege of working with

a professor named Janet who became my mentor. She is one ofthe most faithful and prophetic people I know. One afternoon, near the date of my graduation, she came over to my apartmentfor lunch. While we were eating, she said "What are you goingto do?" I assumed her question referred to my post-graduation

plans. At the time I was doing some private catering for a fewfamilies on the Upper West Side, so I told her I was consideringcontinuing that work or trying to expand it. She stopped me inthe middle of my long response and said, "No, Tallu, I meanwhat are you going to do about poverty?"

Any of us reading the papers and listening to the newsknows that the gap between rich and poor in our country is

only widening, and Nashville is not exempt from this growingdisparity. There are too many among us who are unemployedor underemployed, who can't find affordable housing or buyhealthy food for their families. And yet, there are thousands ofhomes across the country that sit vacant, there is more thanenough food for everyone, and there is so much work that needsdoing to fix this breaking, broken world.

I am always moved by the story in the Torah about tIsraelites wandering in the wilderness with no food to eat. WhGod sends manna down from heaven, they are filled with tfear that there will not be enough and try to save it by hoardiit. But whatever they attempt to save turns sour and begins

rot. This story in Exodus reminds us of what happens when wtry to hoard God's abundant blessings instead of share the

When do you think we will be more concerned with othearound us having enough than with making sure we ourselvhave plenty? Like many of you, my life is brimming with t

blessings of family, of education, of relationships, of plentyam grateful for the work of The Nashville Food Project becauit gives me a daily chance to practice sharing what I have begiven, a practice that rescues me from a life of plenty. I still feconvicted by Janet's question every day and am grateful for yowho show me how to be generous with these blessings that alike bread falling from the sky.

Poverty and Being Generousby Tallu Quinn, TNFP Director & Outreach Minister

At the end of his freshman year, FranklinWillis auditioned for the choral musicdepartment of Nashville School of the Arts and

I accepted him. It took no time at all to realize that God hadplaced into my care a vein of gold. His parents (two preciousjewels) and I worked together with him to dig through musictheory, music history and much vocal music. As a high schoolsenior, what emerged from that mine was something to behold.

He went to the University of Memphis for further polishing, finishing with a Masters degree in choral music. He spent a yearteaching in Memphis and returned to Nashville, where he hassparkled as the choral director of Oliver Middle School andshone at WCC as a bass soloist and section leader.

Franklin will be leaving us at the end of June. He and hwife, Erica, are returning to Memphis to complete her educatiAlthough we will miss him terribly, we understand that preciometals are meant to be shared. God's hand is on this young mand I am thankful that He allowed me a small part in presentihim to the world. God bless Franklin and Erica in their neendeavors.
