Go out into your garden and make a list of all the things you can see. See if you can write down 15 things. Include the word in te reo if you know it. For example, birds (manu).

Spelling - Level 1

Add an adjective (describing word) to each of your 15 words. You can add more than 1. For example, if you wrote down ‘flower’ as one one of your words, adjectives in front of it could be ‘rosy, red flower’.

Spelling - Level 2

A prefix is a letter or group of letters which can be ‘fixed’ onto the beginning of a root word to change its meaning. Match these prefixes (on the left) with the root word (on the right). They are mixed up. Try one list per day.

Then come up with some prefixes and root words of your own and ask someone to see if they can create the words like you did.

Spelling - Level 3

A suffix is a group of letters that can be fixed onto the end of a word. The suffix ‘ist’ tells us when someone does something. For example if you study science then you are a scientist. Note how the end of the word ‘science’ changed when you added the suffix. Complete these sentences. You may need to use a dictionary to check the spelling once you have added the ‘ist’ ending.
