Spelling TipThere is a vowel sound in each syllable of a word. Some vowel sounds are spelled as you expect. Others must be remembered.

Say each word. Listen for the short vowel sounds. The soft vowel sound in the unstressed syllable of cactus and success is called a schwa sound. The sign for this sound is /ə/.
