Spain
The Spanish Grand Prix is once again the first European race of the Formula 1 season this year, and can be expected to set the tone for the majority of the campaign.
The championship equation is interestingly poised after the opening four races, with drivers from four different teams holding down the top four places in the standings.
Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing lead the way courtesy of two wins, a third and a fourth place finish.
Although far from their dominant best, Red Bull has shown flashes of the sort of performance that has taken it to the last three world titles.
Vettel may only be 10 points up the road from Kimi Raikkonen right now, but a victory for the German in Barcelona this weekend would be a huge blow to the opposition.
Lotus and Ferrari have both put wins on the board already but will need to make solid fists of their upgrade packages to stay in touch.
Whether the underfunded Lotus outfit can keep pace with development over the season is always a question mark, while a lack of qualifying speed is currently the biggest concern for the Italian outfit.
The greatest weakness at Mercedes - high rear tyre degradation - is equally clear, but at least the Silver Arrows have astounding pace over one-lap.
And what of McLaren? Arguable this weekend is more important for the Woking-based outfit than any other.
The sound of Jenson Buttons delight at simply making Q3 in Bahrain was a sure sign that this squad is still a fair way away from where it needs to be.
Expect to see a multitude of new parts coming on and off the MP4-28s this weekend as the team seeks to validate a vast collection of potential improvements, particularly to its wing and exhaust packages.
With no in-season private testing allowed in modern Formula 1, itll be a very public case of suck-it-and-see on Friday at Barcelona.

Its been hard to know what to make of Ferrari during the early part of the 2013 season.In 2012, the Scuderia and its star driver
Fernando Alonso could not even make Q3 on the first Saturday of the season, such was its lack of competitiveness.
And yet, with a mix of skill, daring, and a dash of good fortune, Alonso led the title race through the early part of the season.
By contrast, 2013 has seen Ferrari produce a stout car from the off, but fail to make the most of it.
Alonso sits just fourth in the championship, 30 points adrift of leader Sebastian Vettel, after four races.
Failing to pit for a broken front wing in Malaysia and a rear wing malfunction in Bahrain have both cost valuable points.
Qualifying, too, has been some cause for concern, with the quickest Ferrari a second away from the pace in both Australia and Malaysia. While that gap has come down dramatically in the most recent two events, the fact that it was the teams second-string driver, Felipe Massa, who was the faster of the pair on the first three Saturdays of the season indicates that something is indeed amiss.
The teams chief designer, Nikolas Tombazis, rates the proud Italian squads performance so far at a mere 6 out of 10, but warns not to write the teams season off just yet.
I think in general, the first results mean we can be reasonably optimistic about the rest of the season, with a sense that we can fight for wins and the championship, he told the official Ferrari website.
However, if I was to score our overall performance, I would only give it a 6 out of 10 and thats for two main reasons: one is that we are not yet quite where we want to be.

In the first four Grands Prix, we were not really able to fight for pole position and that is one of our main objectives at the moment.
Secondly, if you look at the actual results, even if its true weve had a win, which naturally we can be very pleased about, we have also had two very bad results where we scored very few points. However, I reiterate, that overall, we can be optimistic for the future.
Ferrari has not won at Barcelona since Felipe Massa triumphed from pole in 2007, while Alonsos drought stretches back a year earlier to his Renault-propelled victory of 2006.
The Spaniard has finished on the podium at his home event twice in the three years since joining Ferrari however - memorably dashing to the lead at the first corner on each occasion.
The wins at Barcelona in 2006, Monza in 2010 and Valencia last year are unquestionably the races that have given me the best emotions of my career, says Alonso.
The warmth of the fans and the feeling you get when you race in Spain are always special, from the moment you arrive at the airport and you head to the hotel and the circuit.
From the first laps on the track on Friday and Saturday morning you can immediately feel the passion of the fans in the grandstands and that sparks off extra motivation because you want to do that little bit extra to make sure they can celebrate.
Thats how the search begins for that elusive tenth of a second of performance
that you are always seeking when youre in a Formula 1 car.
As the first event in Europe, the Spanish Grand Prix traditionally signals the appearance of a raft of performance upgrades for each team. This year is expected to be no different.
I believe most of our competitors will have a significant number of updates in Spain, which is not surprising, as there was a reasonably long gap after the first four races, says Tombazis.
Of course, we too have updates and naturally, I dont want to go into too much detail, but they extend to the bodywork, floor and wings.
With any new component, the difficulty lies not so much in its development but in deciding whether or not it is working on track as well as we had hoped. Therefore, by Friday evening in Barcelona, our objective is to have a clear view on what we will take forward to use in the race, in
the hope of seeing measurements taken from the wind tunnel confirmed on track.
Ferraris technical department has been under even more scrutiny than usual of late, with wind tunnel correlation issues having largely been blamed for the troubles of 2012.
Tombazis says that a variety of organisational factors have helped the squad make a more competitive start to the season.
We have made a series of changes to our approach in terms of our working practices and also from an organisational point of view, he says.
At the same time, we are improving our facilities and I believe we now also have a better understanding about how certain aspects of the car work. Putting all that together has enabled us to make a better start to the season than in previous years.

these fundamental changes and we continue to work on improving all these parameters, which, in the case of our facilities, includes the work we are doing on our wind tunnel.
I think the new working methods we have adopted and the new structure put in place has allowed us to be more creative and this was one of the objectives we established along with Pat Fry, to reorganise the place and to give people more time to think.
We identified areas where, in the past few years, we were a bit understaffed, which meant people were under pressure and did not have time to think about what could make the car go faster. It is working, but there is room to improve still further, even though this aspect has definitely contributed to the improvement in performance that we have seen so far this year.
Whether or not former Lotus F1 technical director James Allison heads to Ferrari remains to be seen, with the Briton having been heavily linked to a return to the squad since Lotus confirmed his departure this week.
With Red Bull, Lotus and Mercedes all showing flashes of great promise in the early races and the need for all teams to invest in their all-new 2014 packages looming large, its set to be another challenging year for the Prancing Horse.

rear wingSimilar levels of downforce are required to Bahrain, which is a little bit higher than Shanghai. A reasonably long straight here means an effective DRS systems helps, even though the straight isnt as long as that seen in China.
BrakesThere are no real issues with braking at all here. The demands are not great and testing here means we know what to expect. It will be a case of tuning our front and rear ducts to achieve the correct temperatures for best braking performance, with no particular concerns over wear.
SuspensionIts a track we know well from testing, but the main difference with the race is that the track temperatures will be much higher, meaning the tyres will work differently. Set-ups used in winter testing to make the tyres warm-up quicker will not be needed. There is no particular kerb usage so the car can run lower than otherwise. Turn 16 is the essential corner; if you have a good car through here, it maximises the run down the long straight. In qualifying its pretty much a flat out corner but with high fuel and a bit of tyre degradation it becomes more tricky.

CIRCuIt dE Catalunya
Turns 1 & 2A quick part of the circuit with swift change of direction. Good pace exiting Turn 2 is important before setting a good line heading into the very quick Turn 3. The approach to Turn 1 is one of the few corners on the track where overtaking is possible.
Turns 3 & 4The high speed Turn 3 and tighter Turn 4 put a lot of stress through the tyres, especially the front left.
Turn 5Braking downhill into this corner makes it
ThE Car
layout and track surface abrasion, while the long, fast Turn 3 puts a particularly heavy load on the front left tyre. Turn 5 can present a risk of locking the front tyres through a combination of braking and turning into the corner as the road falls away from the car. Its worth noting also that Pirelli have changed to a new hard compound which is closer to that used last season.
Front wingSufficient front wing is required to eliminate understeer through the first and final turns.
EngineGood driveability from the engine is needed, particularly during the lower speed corners in the second half of the lap.
ThE CirCuiT
very easy to lock the inside front tyres as the road falls away from the car.
Turns 7 & 8A challenging uphill sequence.
Turn 10The slowest corner on the track; taken in first or second gear on high fuel before a wide exit into Turn 11 which is taken flat out. Turn 10 is a good tests of the cars traction.
Turns 14 & 15A more technical part of the track here with some large kerbs which drivers are advised to avoid. The car is not set-up to use these kerbs.
Turn 16Its essential to have a good car through Turn 16 to maximise the run down the long straight. In qualifying its taken pretty much flat out, but with high fuel and a bit of tyre degradation it becomes more tricky.
Start/Finish StraightAlthough not one of the longest straights on the calendar, effective DRS will notably assist overtaking here.
SurfaceThe track surface is quite abrasive here, meaning the tyres get a double whammy as the circuit layout puts them through their paces too.

As usual, the Spanish Grand Prix will see almost every team on the grid bring a major upgrade package, making the form at this race particularly hard to predict.
Although the Barcelona venue serves as one of the key pre-season testing circuits, its sensitivity to changes in temperature and wind strength/direction ensures that its a place that often puzzles the very best.
The early races indicate that Red Bull is undoubtedly the team to beat. It has won two of the four Grands Prix held so far, both with Sebastian Vettel at the wheel.

Both Vettel and team-mate Mark Webber have won in Spain over the past three years, although the teams 2012 campaign at the venue was surprisingly lacklustre.
Lotus, Ferrari and Mercedes have all been snapping at Red Bulls heals thus far, with the Lotus perhaps the most complete package.
Although the team has played down its upgrade package, expect the black and gold machines to be well in podium contention again here.
The local fans will be looking for something special for Fernando Alonso, who had
appeared the only one able to challenge Vettel in Bahrain prior to a rear wing malfunction.
The Spaniard will have to improve his qualifying speed though if he wants to challenge for victory at this notoriously hard to pass venue. The last 12 races in Barcelona have, after all, been won from pole position.
By contrast, the Mercedes cars have been arguably the very fastest of 2013 over one lap, but burning off the rear tyres still appears to be an issue. Its hard to imagine that the team could have completely fixed that issue since Bahrain.
