T his weekend’s Sky City Triple Crown at Hidden Valley Raceway will see the first ‘mixed tyre’ championship race of the season.

While mixed tyre races were the only way we saw the Sprint tyre used in its first year of existence in 2009, two seasons later the format is a somewhat controversial topic.

Moves were afoot to abandon the concept after the non-points races earlier in the year at Albert Park, where the complexity of the racing under the format was further underlined.

With the complaints having been rejected, one looks towards Event 6 of the 2011 championship hoping that the appearance of the Safety Car does not determine Sunday’s race result.

Those without a genuine chance of a strong finish may well hold their soft tyres until the final stages of Race 13, and hope that a late Safety Car allows them to burn through the lead pack before the chequered flag. If that strategy does come into play, then absolutely anyone can win.

Love or loathe the luck involved in the mixed tyre races, last year’s Safety Car-free Sunday encounter at Hidden Valley between Jamie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom was one of the highlights of the season.

With the TeamVodafone and Orrcon FPR squads choosing opposing tyre strategies, the pair managed to have an intriguing race-long dice, without actually seeing much of each other on track.

Let’s wait and see if history repeats this Sunday afternoon.

Q&A with JASON BRIGHT

Having won races at the two most recent V8 Supercars events at Barbagallo and Winton, Jason Bright and his Team BOC squad head to

Darwin in a purple patch of form.

Running outside the top 10 after Hamilton, Bright has risen to fourth in the championship standings , and is now being spoken of as a title contender.

Speedcafe.com’s Stefan Bartholomaeus spoke to the 38-year-old ahead of the weekend’s action.

SPEEDCAFE: You must be heading to Hidden Valley with your confidence up after a couple of great wins.

JASON BRIGHT: I am confident. We had really good race pace at Barbagallo and at Winton. We suffered a little for qualifying speed, but we had a really good test last week and I think we’re starting to improve that as well. So I think we can go to Darwin and be very competitive.

SPEEDCAFE: How do you think the format, with a top 10 shootout, a full hard tyre race and a mixed tyre race will suit your car?

BRIGHT: I think it’ll work alright for us. Our hard tyre pace was actually very good in Perth as well - we were second in practice on the Friday and we just had a bad qualifying run for that first race, but we had really good race pace. So I’m not really too fussed if we’re on the hard tyres or the soft tyres.

Darwin is a high-wear track anyway, and our strength is really our tyre life at the moment, so I’m sure that’ll really shine through. I still think that we should have more soft tyre races, as they make for better racing than the hard tyre.

SPEEDCAFE: Having both tyres in the same race can certainly mix up the result if you get a Safety Car at the wrong moment...

BRIGHT: Yeah, it certainly changes the way you go about it compared to just having a full soft tyre race. It does throw a bit more luck into it - if there’s a late safety car and some guys have saved their soft tyres then it’s their race to win. It confuses things a little bit and makes it very hard to make a clear cut call on what’s the best strategy to have.

SPEEDCAFE: There are perhaps 12 cars right now that can win races, but only TeamVodafone seems to have the toolbox that enables them to compete for the win every weekend. Do you feel you’re close to getting to that level of consistency, track to track?

BRIGHT: You’re right in that so far this year ,Jamie has been the only one to be consistently up there. Except for New Zealand where they had a bit of a slip-up he’s been up there at every round.

Most of the other guys that have won races this year that I’ve seen, maybe except for Tander at Adelaide, and that was slightly fuel economy effected, but most of the other races that have been won this year haven’t necessarily come from having the best pace. They’ve been through wet weather, fuel economy... lots of different things. At Winton and Barbagallo where we’ve won, it was purely on speed. Fuel strategy wasn’t an issue in either of those races.

So I think at the end of the day we can take it up to Whincup on pace from now on. We had a bit of a slip-up in new Zealand and Adelaide, where we didn’t get the results that we should have been getting, and obviously a DNF in the first race of the year put us a long way behind. But i think that we can be consistent from now on, and that we do have the speed to match if not beat Triple Eight.

SPEEDCAFE: It’s no secret that you’ve developed your car away from the Walkinshaw style of set-up. Was there a turning point last year where the development direction really seemed to click?

BRIGHT: We only started going in a different direction around New Zealand last year, and at Winton and Darwin we certainly saw some very good race pace, but we really didn’t come on strong enough until Tasmania and Homebush. The pace we showed at those tracks gave me confidence coming into this year that we’d be very strong.

I left Abu Dhabi feeling that we’d punched nowhere near our weight, and like I said, Adelaide and New Zealand were very disappointing. But where we’ve been in the last couple of rounds - that’s where I expected to be from the word go this year.

CIRCUIT INFO

Hidden Valley was voted the 2008 Event of the Year. The Championship first ventured into the Northern Territory in 1998 when the round was the penultimate event in that year’s Championship. South of Darwin, the circuit’s main feature is its 1.1-kilometre long straight where top-end horsepower is critical. Having a car that flows well through the sweeping bends in the second part of the lap is also crucial.

Hidden Valley Raceway has a bit of everything really, with a very long straight, a tight hairpin, and some really flowing corners. It’s a good

challenge for the teams and the drivers.

It’s not a track where a point and squirt car works very well, often you have to be able to carry speed, particularly through the exit of Turn 1, which is increasing radius.

You also need a car that doesn’t chew up its tyres. We haven’t had a lot of luck with that on the softs, but we are reasonably happy with our car on hards, so we’ll see what happens when we get there.

Circuit challenges

There are some big bumps and a couple of kerbs, particularly through Turns 7 and 8, that the better cars ride very well, giving a better run onto the straight.

Obviously you need to get down that long straight as well as you can. The keys really are getting onto that straight without hurting your rear tyres, and then of course being able to stop over the bumps at the end of it.

It’s very hard on brakes. Going through Turns 1 and

4, and then the hairpin at Turn 5 - by the time you get there the brakes are very very hot, especially if you’re running close to other cars.

The other thing that makes overtaking difficult into Turn 1 is that, because of the high speeds, it’s one of those places where you see a bit of side-draight. You’ll see someone pull out and get alongside, but then they can’t continue it on - the car that you’re overtaking picks up a side-draught, and it almost sling-shots you back again.

Mixed tyres

I actually like the mixed tyre races. If you qualify up the front, you’re almost forced to start on the soft, but if there is a Safety Car and you’ve started on the soft then you’re in a little bit of trouble.

Historically there hasn’t been a lot of Safety Cars in Darwin. There’s often a lot of red flags in practice, but they haven’t been a lot of Safety Cars in the races. As much as everyone will say that you should start on hards in case there’s a Safety Car, half the field will start on softs.

In terms of car set-up, the mixed tyre races mean you’ve got to compromise your set-up. It depends how

long you’re planning to run on which tyre as to how you bias that.

Gentle approach

You’ll certainly see people going easy on their first laps on the soft tyres in Sunday’s race.

The difficult part going to the soft is that you’re often racing somebody right there and then, looking for track position.

But the general trend seems to be that the harder you are on them for those first few laps, the less life you get out of the tyre. Probably the Stone Brothers are the ones that stand out in terms of taking time to get up to speed. They often sacrifice quite a few positions in those first few laps, having the confidence in their tyre life that they’ll get it all back. The drivers have to be very controlled to be able to do that.

Qualifying strategy

We’ll see the shootout back this weekend. In Darwin, the qualifying sessions almost turn into shootouts anyway, because you only get one lap out of each set of tyres.

There’s an hour between qualifying and the shootout, so it’ll be interesting to see how the track temperature changes in that time.

Last year we saw a lot of people complaining of oversteer, and then on Sunday they went out with the

same set-up and had massive understeer. We had a similar thing at Winton, but nowhere near as bad as that.

Ambient temperature has a lot to do with that, as well as track condition. The different rubber that goes down from the support categories can make a real difference to the way our cars behave.

One thing to watch for is how people use their tyre bank on Saturday. If they have a couple of runs in qualifying and then use another green set in the top 10, you’ll only have one left for Sunday. So you’re going to have to do one or two runs on tyres that have already done a qualifying lap, and often there’s a big difference between a brand new tyre and a slightly used one. So it’ll really hurt if you get baulked on Saturday and have to use more than one set.

Form

I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see Jason Bright take another win this weekend. If you look at his times in the races last year, he was very very fast. He qualified poorly, but in the races he was right there, so don’t be surprised if he’s up there again this year.

They’ve obviously found something recently with their car and have made a quantum leap. They probably didn’t have the fastest car over one lap at Winton, but they clearly had very good race pace. They’re doing a great job.

The temperature and humidity in Darwin makes the Sky City Triple Crown one of the hardest events of the year for the V8 Supercars drivers.

While it’s no secret that the drivers undertake extensive training programs throughout the year, IRWIN Racing’s Alex Davison - who has recorded his strongest V8 Supercars qualifying and race results at the NT venue - says Darwin is especially challenging.

“It’s always very hot in the car, but in Darwin temperatures can approach and even exceed 60 degrees celsius,” says Davison.

“My preparation throughout the year consists of training in the gym with my trainer three days a week doing a myriad of exercises ranging from strength work, core work, circuit work, sprints, boxing and other power exercises.

“We focus on strength and endurance. The other days

I spend racking up the kays riding the bike, improving my cardio fitness.

“Preparing yourself in this way enables you to handle excessive heat in the car, particular in the longer races.”

According to Davison, fitness is nothing without hydration.

“The hotter the weather the more important hydration becomes,” explains Davison.

“In the longer races, especially races over 200 kilometres, it is critically important to ensure we are saturated from a hydration point of view prior to getting in the car.

“You can’t leave it to the last minute, it’s important to get yourself right and then keep yourself topped up.

“If you are hydrated then you will be right, if you are not, then you could struggle and it can be dangerous.”

TeamVodafone’s Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes run 1-2 in the V8 Supercars Championship and they also sit atop the qualifying averages from the season so far.Whincup is averaging a starting position of 2.27, while teammate Craig Lowndes on 4.73.

Steven Johnson is a surprise next best on 6.91, ahead of Mark Winterbottom (7.91), Lee Holdsworth (9.36), Will Davison (9.45), Garth Tander (10.36), Jason Bright (10.36), Rick Kelly (11) and James Courtney (12.09)

The major disappointment of qualifying has been Shane van Gisbergen who, although being fifth in the championship, is only 13th best in qualifying with an average starting position of 14th.

Barbagallo and Winton race winner Jason Bright needs a turn around of recent form at Hidden Valley if he’s to keep his recent run going in the V8 Supercars Championship.

Bright hasn’t qualified in the top 10 in Darwin since 2006 – when he took pole for Ford Performance Racing, and hasn’t recorded a top

10 finish in his last 10 races at the venue.Bright failed to finish five of those races, all of

which were across 2007 and 2008 with his own Britek Motorsport outfit.

Team BOC however has strong Darwin form, with Jason Richards scoring pole at the circuit in 2009 and provisional pole last year.

IRWIN Racing’s Alex Davison is still at a loss to explain just why he has such good history at Hidden Valley Raceway, but the Ford pilot could again land on the podium in Darwin.

In 2009 he recorded his first-ever V8 Supercar podium finish with a second place behind Michael Caruso on the Sunday.

Last year he backed it up with his maiden V8 Supercar pole position on the Sunday but sadly an electrical gremlin sidelined him when he seemed on target for a return to the podium.

Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing’s Karl Reindler will move into yet another car for the Hidden Valley event after using two different cars at Barbagallo and then at Winton, right.

His team has purchased chassis WR008 from Walkinshaw Racing and Reindler will step into this car from the Hidden Valley event onwards.

Rick Kelly first raced the car in 2008 before it was used by David Reynolds in 2009 and Andrew Thompson last year in Bundaberg Red colours.

Reindler failed to finish on Saturday in Darwin last year and was 26th on Sunday.

Toll Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney is in danger of the worst finish by a reigning champion in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship.

The #1 Commodore driver sits 13th in the points score, 618 points behind series leader Jamie Whincup, with just three top-five race finishes from the 11 races held so far.

No driver competing full-time in the championship in the year following their victory has ever finished outside the top 10 since the ATCC became a series of races.

I love going to Darwin, we have family up there so it’s nice to catch up with them each year, and the event gener-ally falls on or around my Birthday, so it’s a good time of year. The whole town comes alive and gets behind the event, which creates a great party atmosphere and obviously the weather at this time of year is incredible.

Hidden Val-ley is a great track; it’s got an extremely long straight and is very hard on tyres. This year we’ll use the hard and the soft tyre throughout the weekend with a com-bination of the two on the Sunday, so it should provide plenty of entertainment for the fans. It’s a great event to spectator at as well with the circuit snaking its way around plenty of viewing areas. I’ve had some good success in Darwin and I’ll be hoping for another good result this year.

The warm V8 Supercar events are the perfect place to break out your running shoes and take in the sights, and both Darwin and Townsville have some great running spots. Here’s a beginner’s running program. It will get you to 20 minutes of easy running in just 10 weeks, but remember to warm up and cool down and do some simple stretches before and after your run.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYShowed great form on both compounds of tyre here last year, but recent Winton event proved FPR still has a long way to go to be able to back them with confidence. While a broken shock absorber on Sunday made the #5 Falcon look worse than it was, tyre life is still a major issue. Certainly a winning chance for Saturday’s hard tyre race, though.
