With the holiday season just around the cor-ner, BC Safety Authority (BCSA) is reminding British Columbians to protect themselves and their property by following a few basic light-ing safety tips.Faulty wiring of seasonal lights can create
electrical hazards and result in injury or prop-erty damage. To reduce risk, BCSA advises consumers to follow the manufacturer’s directions for installation and use of indoor and outdoor lights and to use only Canadian-approved products.BCSA recommends checking lights or other
electrical decorations for defects before use and discarding any with cracked sockets, frayed or loose wires. Another important precaution is to turn off all electrical lighting
and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.In addition, BCSA provides the follow-
ing tips for lighting your home safely this holiday season:• Ensure that your lights have Canadian
safety approval certification.• Follow the manufacturer’s directions for
installing and using any electrical decora-tions.
• Consider switching to energy efficient LED lights – they produce less heat which reduc-es the risk of fire.
• Use the right cord for the location - indoor and outdoor cords are different.
• Outdoor sockets within 2.5 meters of grade

require a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) receptacle.• Never run cords under rugs where people will walk over them
or through doorways or windows where they may become pinched – breakage of pinched wires can cause a fire.
• Never use staples or nails to attach cords to walls or roofs.• Make sure cords can handle the amperage indicated on your elec-
trical devices, and avoid multi-outlet adaptor connections which can overload your outlet.
• Outdoor lights left up year round will likely need to be replaced.• Keep lights out of the reach of small children. For additional information about electrical safety, visit the BCSA website www.safe-

The Christmas music is echoing throughout Street Hope New and Used. But if Christmas is about giving and caring, it’s Christmas all year round at the Young Road shop. For three years Street Hope has been there to help people furnish their homes, fi ll their closets, and dress their children. It has done that with a simple philosophy. It’s on a wrist band that John Hood never takes off: “Pay it forward.”John and Bev (wife, partner and best friend) have seen some tough times. But they’ve also seen the good that can happen when people help each other and treat each other with dignity and respect. That begins by offering quality merchandise – items that anyone would feel proud to have in their home.Indeed, that pride bubbles from Bev with the freshness of a mountain spring. Not only is she proud of the eclectic array of furniture and household items they’ve sourced from contacts and connections throughout the Lower Mainland, she’s also proud to show them off.Street Hope is deceptively large inside. And that layout allows Bev to organize their inventory in a way that masks the true size of what they have to offer. And there’s a lot. Whether it’s a living room, kitchen or child’s room that needs fi lling, Street Hope has something.

Cutlery, small appliances, pots and pans – Street Hope is a great place for someone just starting out, or starting over.
The clothing is meticulously organized, clean and in excellent condition. They have everything from sleepers for a newborn, to jeans for the teens, and business wear for that important interview.
There is also an extensive collection of equestrian gear – an echo of Bev’s earlier passion for riding and running a tack shop.
Prices are kept affordable, and their son, Graeme is there with a friendly smile to help out.
But John and Bev don’t stop there. If there is a need, they will fi ll it for little more than a promise that the recipient will do the same for someone else. They regularly support Meadow Rose Society – a local charity that helps new moms support their children.
They’ve provided mobility scooters to those in need, helped families recovering from a fi re, or people just looking to start a new life.
That approach has helped Street Hope build a community. Their facebook page – which lists upcoming specials and events – has nearly 1,500 likes.
Nonetheless, as Street Hope approaches its third anniversary on Dec. 15, John and Bev still chuckle at the surprise expressed by so many who walk into their store for the fi rst time.
“We’re Chilliwack’s best kept secret,” Bev says with a laugh.
Street Hope New and Used is located at 8982 Young Road. Donations are excepted during store hours, but only if they are in good condition.

2020%%The Hampton Inn by Hilton Chilliwack has partnered with 89.5 The Drive to launch their 1st Annual Fill-A- Room-With-Food campaign in support of the Salvation Army Food Bank. This food drive started on November 12th and will continue through to December 12th, 2014, when they will host a wrap-up reception and presenta-tion to the Salvation Army.
As a new business in Chilliwack, the Hampton Inn wanted to institute an annual food drive as a way of supporting and giving back to the community.
“We wanted to select a charity that is based in Chilliwack and would have the greatest tan-gible impact”, say Christina Welsh, General Manager of the Hampton Inn. “The Salvation Army Food Bank does an outstanding job helping to feed the more vulnerable families in our neighbourhoods. We are proud to be partnering with them.”
The Hampton Inn’s cater-
ing partners, Kuro Asian Cuisine, Sherry’s Kitchen, and Vita Bella Bistro, are assisting with food collec-tion at each of their respec-tive locations. All food donations will be consoli-dated in Room 213 at the Hampton Inn, where the public is also encouraged to drop off non-perishable goods.
The Salvation Army food bank feed at least 3,800 Chilliwack residents every month, one-third of whom are children. Pre-packed foods such as canned tuna, peanut butter, cereal, rice, pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, as well as baby and personal hygiene prod-ucts are always needed.
“We are excited to have some of our corporate clients joining in to sup-port this campaign”, said Patricia Lundquist, Director of Sales & Marketing for the Hampton Inn. “Some of the businesses are collecting food donations within their offices, and others are con-tributing financially.”
The Hampton Inn would like to invite the Chilliwack community to participate in the wrap-up reception between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm on Friday, December 12th, when the Salvation Army will be presented with a cheque and all the com-munity donations filling Room 213.
Fill A Room With Food
As the community wraps itself in the Christmas spirit and the traditional shop-ping season begins, Upper Fraser Valley RCMP wish to ensure that your gifts remain safe & secure for delivery on December 25 right along with Santa’s.
The holidays are a time for fun & festivity so don’t let criminals be your Scrooge this season. Here are a few precautions to take when venturing out to do shopping all while avoiding heartache & disap-pointment.
• Don’t withdraw more money than you need when visiting ATMs. Thieves lurk in parking lots around financial institutions. Be aware of your surroundings & take note of anyone fol-lowing you
• Men should carry their wallets in their front pockets as opposed to their back pockets or jackets
• Women should carry their purses close to their body but should not wrap their purse straps around them-selves. Doing so could cause you to be dragged to the ground in the event that your purse is snatched.
• Never leave your pur-chases unattended, even for a short period of time.
Parents:
Everyone knows that shopping malls become increasingly busy at this time of year. Malls are a flurry of activity with shoppers rushing around, scurrying to find the last perfect gift to place under the tree. Often people become so focused on the task at hand, that they can lose track of what their children are doing or where they’ve wandered off to. A good idea is to ensure that in the event
your children become sepa-rated from you, they go to the nearest cashier to tell them they are lost & to stay there for assistance.
Parking:
Parking is almost always a problem when it comes to the holiday season. If possible, park under light-ing & close to entrances/exits. Under no circum-stances should you leave your children unattended in your vehicle, even for a short period of time. Place all of your purchases in your trunk to avoid drawing attention to your vehicle. Know that if you place all of your purchases in the back seat you may return to your vehicle to find your windows smashed & all of your gifts stolen. Also, if gifts become too heavy
& you are going to place some in your trunk but then go back shopping… place them in the trunk but then move your car to another place in the parkade so that would-be thieves don’t see packages placed in a vehicle & then left unattended.
When your day of shop-ping is over & it’s time to head home, a good practice is to have your keys ready when you approach your vehicle. By doing so, you avoid the clumsiness of try-ing to find them & juggling your shopping bags, which delays you getting into your vehicle.
We hope that everyone has an enjoyable holiday season!
Season’s greetings, from the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP.

How to make your holiday party uniqueEntertaining season is in full swing, and many people’s social calendars are filled with parties, dinners and family gatherings. For those serving as host or hostess, setting your event apart from others can be challeng-ing but not impossible. At a time when the holiday sea-son is littered with events, many are difficult to distin-guish from one another. But party hosts can take several steps to set their shindigs apart from other holiday gatherings.
• Choose a creative date. The weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day tend to be the busiest of the holiday sea-son, so think about hosting your event outside of this time. A pre-season party or
something in mid-January may be more amenable to busy guests. Parties that fall outside of the usual time period may be a welcome change for guests who are simply stretched too thin during the heart of the holi-day season.
• Choose an unusual party time. Cocktail par-ties are the norm come the holiday season, so switch things up for your soirée. Host a brunch or luncheon, which figures to be less expensive than cocktail or dinner parties.
• Invite children to the event. For a depar-ture from the more typical adults-only holiday par-ties, include children in the festivities this year. Seeing the magic of the holidays
through the eyes of children can add life to your party, and it can save you and your guests the cost of childcare.
• Create a photo mon-tage. Collect images of your guests from the last year and create a slide show. Guests will likely enjoy reliv-ing the previous 12 months and look forward to making some memories in the year to come.
• Throw a party YOU would love to attend. Instead of thinking of ways to make your party the best or the most unique for guests, figure out your likes and what makes you com-fortable. If you are relaxed and enjoying yourself, there’s a good chance that will rub off on your guests.
The phrase “Happy Holidays” is uttered millions of times across the globe between the end of November and the beginning of January. But even if you find yourself in a foreign, non-English-
speaking country this holiday season, you can still pass along this popular greeting thanks to the following translations.
• Danish: Glade feriedage• Dutch: Gelukkige Vakantie
• French: Joyeuses Fêtes• Italian: Buone Feste
• Portuguese: Festas Felizes• Romanian: Sarbatori Fericite
• Spanish: Felices Fiestas• Swedish: Trevlig Helg• Turkish: Mutlu Tatiller

Seven simple strategies to avoid holidayscammers.
While the holiday season is the busiest time of the year for shoppers, it’s also peak season for scam artists set on stealing your identity or hard earned cash. Fraudsters target the holi-
day season using a variety of schemes including email phish-ing messages that try to con-vince you to hand over your personal information or install malicious software or even donate to a fake charity – and, unfortunately, they don’t stop there. Scam artists also employ
shoulder surfing and telephone scams to get your identifica-tion or they create fake web-sites that offer deals on gift cards that you’ll never receive. You can outsmart the scam-
mers by being vigilant and one step ahead of their game. The best defence is to be aware of the tricks they’ll use and take steps to avoid becoming a victim including these seven
simple strategies:• Be a scrooge with everything
related to your identity.• Don’t take a big purse shop-
ping and limit the amount of bank cards, credit cards and identification you take with you.
• Be extremely cautious when shopping online
• Be mindful of bogus web-sites and go directly to the store’s website by typing its address into your web browser
• Buy gift cards directly from merchants or from an authorized sales merchant
• Be wary of filling out online forms that request personal information
• Remain vigilant, protect your PIN and ensure no one is shoulder surfing when you put it into an ATM or a pay-ment device.
• Keep an eye out for those door-knocking fraudsters representing a fake charity or selling magazine subscrip-tions to raise money for a
worthy cause or school trip that may not exist.
• Don’t leave gifts visible in your car with receipts that have personal information on them.
• Avoid broadcasting to your social media circles that you are about to fly off to your warm holiday vacation which also tells criminals that your snail mail – with your banking and personally identifying information – will be sitting in your mailbox untouched.
Fraud is a significant problem that Vancity takes very seri-ously. They work with industry partners, other financial insti-tutions and law enforcement and coordinate efforts to catch and deter financial criminals. Employees at the credit union
are also trained as a critical first line of defence, to detect fraud and the various scams and they have monitoring and detection systems that iden-tify fraudulent transactions – sometimes even before they’re completed.
Tis the season for friends, family and fraudsters
