Peter James ShawDecember 4, 1925 – December 18, 2015
Husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, sailor, hunter, golfer and the best damn grader operator anywhere has left for greener pastures where every shot is a hole in one and every meal has Yorkshire Pudding and key lime pie.
Dad was born in Parksville and, although he travelled far, his heart was always on the Island. After time in the logging industry, he joined the war effort and sailed with the Atlantic convoys during WW II on HMCS Prince Rupert. After
the war’s end, he joined the Surfacing Branch of what was to
become the Ministry of Highways and laid a lot of the first
blacktop in the Okanagan, Princeton and Cariboo areas. He
met Mom while in Vernon and they got married in Parksville
in 1951. Dad started looking for a job where he wouldn’t be
away from home so much. They ended up in Quesnel where
Dad was a foreman for Highways for many years. In 1964,
Dad took a giant risk, quit Highways, bought his first grader
and embarked on another adventure, building and maintaining
logging roads and plowing snow. Another grader followed
and Peter J Shaw Ltd. eventually had 2 graders, a loader and
a truck plow. The opportunity to return to the Island came
in 1975 and Dad sold off all the equipment except for the
one grader and moved everyone to Campbell River. There
followed many years of grading roads and plowing snow,
mainly from Gold River to Head Bay but other places as well.
Dad eventually sold the grader and retired but it didn’t stick
and he went back to work running grader for various outfits,
including Holbrook Dyson Logging and Onion Lake Logging
before really retiring in February 1989.
Mom and Dad moved from South McCarthy to the place in
Shelter Bay in 1984, where they spent many years; Mom
digging in the garden and Dad golfing at Stories Creek or out
fishing in the Topper III. While it was an idyllic life, it didn’t
stop them from running away to Yuma in the winter or to
Cranbrook for hunting with his sons. When the stairs became
too much, Mom and Dad moved to the Forde House in Willow
Point in 2013 and then to Berwick in 2015.
He leaves behind his wife Mary, children Ed (Linda), John,
Peter (Tina), Paul and Cilka (Mark), many grandchildren and
greatgrandkids.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 137 in Campbell River on Saturday May 21, 2016
from 1 to 4 pm.
Flowers gratefully declined. A donation in Peter’s memory
made to Campbell River and District Adult Care Society, 12 –
142 Larwood Road, Campbell River, BC, V9W 1S2, 250 923
0991, [email protected], www.cradultcare.com, would be
greatly appreciated.

Condolences may be left for the family at: www.campbellriverfunerals.com
Mike is survived by his wife and partner of 34 years, Linda, sons Scott (Sherry) and Michael Jr., daughters Wendy and Carmen (Sean), nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, nephew Steven, niece Melissa, and his beloved cat Tonchie.Mike had a long and varied career in the aviation industry, flying many types of aircraft, on floats, skiis, and wheels, as well as co-pilot on Cessna Citation 500. He received his pilots license in 1955, and flew commercially until his retirement in 1995. Beginning
in Ontario, he worked in many of the eastern provinces and
territories, including Quebec, Labrador and Newfoundland,
before moving his young family west to Campbell River in the
mid 1960s.Mike was a “jack of all trades” and avid outdoor enthusiast.
Always busy, he built houses, hiked, biked and generally loved
the outdoors. In 2003, he completed the “Great Walk” from
Tahsis to Gold River with his friend Klaus.
He also held a ticket as a “Tool and Die Maker”, and when not
flying, worked in that trade for one of the Engineering outfits in
Campbell River.Mike loved to travel and along with Linda, had visited many
countries, Peru, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Egypt, most of
Europe, China, Tibet, Greece, Turkey, Singapore, Antarctica, and
The Amazon to name a few. Many winters were spent in Mexico,
enjoying the warm Mexican sunshine and comradery of friends.
Mike was an inspiration to his children and grandchildren, and
will be forever missed and loved, especially by his wife Linda.
Mike donated his brain to the UBC clinic for Alzheimer Disease
at UBC Hospital.Donations can be made in Mike’s memory to the Alzheimer
Society of B.C.A private gathering was held for Mike on Jan 17, 2016. There will
be an informal scattering and celebration of life held for Mike at
a later date.

September 18, 1936-January 14, 2016 Albert Karl TarkanenMay 5, 1931- January 20, 2016
It is with much sadness that the family of Albert Karl Tarkanen announce his death which occurred on January 20, 2016 at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
Born May 5, 1931 in Alert Bay, BC., he was the only child of the late Jack and Esther Tarkanen. He was also predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children Eija (Jarvinen); second wife Fran (Drury) and his special grandson Brent Tarkanen.
Albert is survived by his partner and best friend Mary
Parkes; his three children Steve Tarkanen (Crystal),
Linda Sjoberg (Campbell), Carleen Palo (Barry),
daughter-in-law Jean Tarkanen, sons-in-law Tim
Church and Gerald Sjoberg; seven grandchildren Tanya,
Jason and Troy Sjoberg, Jory Tarkanen, Jaylene Atkinson,
Dylan and Katie Church as well as nieces and nephews.
At the age of six Albert moved with his parents to
Sointula, BC., where as a teenager he began his lifelong
and dearly loved career as commercial fisherman.
Albert’s knowledge of BC coastal waters was phenomenal
and his happiest days were those spent fishing halibut,
rock cod, herring, trolling for salmon and gill netting.
His many boats from the Sturgeon1 to Island Reward
were his pride and joy.Albert’s success as businessman and fisherman can
be attributed to his ability to accept change, welcome
new technology and his special skill of finding talented
people to work with him.
He will be missed not only at his Marine Ways, Freezer
Plant and Net Loft in Sointula but by his network of
commercial fisherman families and associated businesses
all along the BC Coast.A service celebrating Albert’s life will be held in Sointula
Hall at 2pm on January 30, 2016.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sointula
Cemetery Fund.

We who have loved and have known her,
whose parting brought great pain,
will treasure her memory forever, until we meet again.
