When thinking of a leading woman that is not afraid to put herself

forward in the Nigeria Oil and Gas industry, Mrs. Henrietta Ebo comes

to mind. She is a trail blazer in the petroleum engineering industry.

From her early days as a petroleum engineer to attaining the position of

Deep Water Asset Manager responsible for the DW Asset Development

and production in Chevron Nigeria Limited, she is an inspiration to

female engineers; fortified with hard work, passion to succeed and abil-

ity to lead successfully. Mrs. Henrietta Ebo shares her story and views

on topical issues in this edition of the SPE Lagos Newsletter.

Please tell us about you and your background, your edu-cational and career history

My name is Henrietta Ebo, I am currently the Deep Water Asset Manager responsible for the DW Asset Development and production in Chevron Nigeria Limited.

I hold a Bachelors of Engineering degree in Petroleum Engineering and I am a certified practicing engineer with Chevron Nigeria Lim-ited in Nigeria. I am a member of SPE, NSE, COREN, APWEN and NAPW (USA). I joined Chevron in 1992 as a trainee petroleum engineer. Now an experienced Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the oil and gas Industry, my specializations include Production Optimization/Reservoir Engineering Management Engineering (Asset Management of Oil and Gas Production), Pro-ject Management with strong technical skills in Field Development Planning/ Implementation, Offshore/Onshore Production Engineering Support and Planning, Strategy and Business Planning, strong competency in Reserves Reporting and Compliance practices, Crude Oil Production Permitting and Export.

From the onset, did you see yourself achieving all the lofty career goals you have attained and what were the key ingredients that aided you in accomplishing these goals?

Career advancement demands hard work and appropriate work ethics, a learning curve I had to overcome over time to get to where I am today.

Key growth values that groomed and enabled me included the following - Leveraging and imbibing the vast learning experiences from upper management, through their mentoring, sharing ‘best practices and lessons learned’ from experiences with Peers/Predecessors, growing one’s confidence and visibility within and outside the organization and the ability to form your own opin-ion of people on their actual capabilities, amongst others.

Tell us a bit more about your success as Deepwater & PSCs Asset Manager at Chevron?

As a leader, it is essential to understand that certain expectations are required of you in order to enable the success of your team. Amongst them is the ability to be an effective team player, to be able to effectively communicate, motivate and align your team to the goals and objectives for the group, to recognize and leverage the diversity within your team, be able to set the ex-pectations for your team by ‘Walking the Talk’ and ensuring that I hold myself accountable for good results from my team.

Aside from my core PE background, having assumed responsibilities like ‘Crude Oil Analyst/Permit Specialist (Liftings, Export Per-mitting and Dredging/Pipeline permitting)’, ‘Strategy and Business Planning Manager’, ‘JV/DW Reserves Coordinator (SEC Re-porting et al)’ exposed me to how the various perspectives of the company/corporation roll up to providing an overarching view of how the business is run. Such experiences are very key and essential to running a ‘Producing Asset/Field’ effectively.

With how far you have come in your career, what would you describe as the most fulfilling moment?

Hmm! Let me see….Most of my career has been fulfilling to me based on the diversity of my professional background. My most fulfilling moment was when my MD called me while I was on vacation; to assume a position reporting directly to him, that is

I was his Tier 4 being asked to move to a Tier 1 job. It took close to a week (till the end of my vacation) for that to sink in, but it really motivated me to appreciate the fact that as long as you work hard, deliver on the expected results and communicate effectively with key stakeholders, efforts will always be recognized and rewarded.

How challenging is it for a woman like you thriving in a male dominated industry?

Women in such industries face varying types of challenges which include negative self-perceptions of their compe-tence, the need to adjust to the masculine environment to accommodate them, the women’s work /life balance roles to avoid conflict at home and in some extreme cases, dis-crimination. Fortunately I have had the good fortune of not experiencing any of the fore-mentioned challenges. But in the interim, my coping strategies have included being more assertive and straightforward when applicable, ensuring I modify my behavior to avoid being overtly feminine, enjoying my responsibilities with the associated challenges, always seeking out mentors to help me grow and looking back at the experiences that have brought me to the current place I’m in.

Do you think there are enough female engineers in the world? What should be done to encourage more females to study engi-neering?

From my time when there was only one (1) female in every engineering class to today where that number has increased twen-tyfold, is a clear conviction that the thin line between male and female dominated professions is ‘non-existent’ - for example, we have more female pilots, astronauts, astrophysicists, neuro and cardiac surgeons, etc. This has further created the appropriate ‘breeding’ ground for both genders not just to compete but also provide the ser-vices and expertise necessary to grow the individual and the nation as a whole.

How do you view SPE’s role to women development in the Oil industry in Nige-ria?

SPE’s role in Women development should be targeted at ensuring the recogni-tion of women in their various roles and capacities as entrepreneurs and/or professionals in the oil and gas industry through net-working, building alliances, providing opportunities and creating a supportive environment to building their careers.

Do you think mentoring plays a relevant role in shaping engineers for the future?

Absolutely!! Be it ‘Formal’ or ‘Informal’; by your ‘Peers’ or ‘Predecessors’; by your ‘Leaders’ or ‘direct reports’, it is necessary and very relevant. Giving and receiving qualitative and timely feedback, career guidance (whether business, technical or leadership based) is essential to one’s professional growth as it provides the foundation for appreciating one’s weaknesses and gaps and how best to close those gaps in order to become a better professional.

Do you think the local content advancement and Asset divestment within the industry is good for the industry?

In my opinion, I feel it is a step in the right direction in order to continue growing the economy. Part of the ‘local content’ vision is to ensure that as a nation, the local expertise and resources are developed to reduce the country’s dependency on external assis-tance and their associated resources.

In your career, what guides your choices between work and personal commitments?

In order to achieve a better work/life balance in my life, the following have guided me through the success of it all - Setting realis-tic goals for oneself, developing a win-win work plan, having a backup plan for emergencies (especially at home), drawing person-al boundaries and staying true to them, managing one’s time efficiently, delegating/sharing the load, not sweating the small stuff, but most importantly and very critical is ensuring the necessary support system at home in times of needed assistance. What’s most important is finding the right balance that suits you.

If you were not in Chevron, what would be your dream job?

Petroleum Engineering will always be my passion irrespective of where I find myself.

What is your typical day like?

Work, Work, Work! But on a serious note, I love what I do considering the occasional challenges I get faced with. One of the most valuable things is the tradition of sharing my day with my family and open to potential career building blocks/feedback, even from my son!

What talent do you desire to have?

None that I desire that I don’t already have - Singing, Counseling, Culinary expertise, Home Interior décor to name a few.

Describe your most memorable vacation?

Corfu, Greece – Visited the Achilleon palace with the statue of Achilles, with a breath-taking view of the city from the garden.

South Africa - Stellenbosch (Wine country at its finest), Cape Agulhas (meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans) and the Boulder Beach (Intriguing location for a Pen-guin colony).

What advice do you have for young indus-try professionals who are looking up to you?

Be confident, be passionate about your work, seek advice/guidance –find a mentor, be open to constructive feedback, be more objective and less sentimental, be patient, never stop learning new things, learn and grow from your mistakes as this is known to be the ‘stepping stone’ to success and ac-quire the skill of ‘being diverse’ in your ca-reer, dealing with colleagues/people et al.

“Performer!!!” Interview with (Mrs.) Henrietta Ebo, Deepwater Asset Manager, Chevron Nigeria (Contd.)

My advice for young industry professionals is to be confident, be passionate about your work, seek advice/guidance, find a mentor and be open to constructive feedback…..
