St. Peter’s College of Engineering and Technology, was established by Lakshmi Saraswathi Educational Trust in the year 2008. The college aims to impart training to students to develop their intellectual powers, identify and cultivate interest and talents, and train them to become responsible and eminent citizens of India. The following UG and PG programmes are offered by the college: B.E. (Aeronautical Engineering) B.E. (Civil Engineering) B.E. (Computer Science and Engineering) B.E. (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) B.E. (Electronics and Communication Engineering) B.E. (Mechanical Engineering) B.Tech. (Information Technology) M.B.A. The intake of students is 120 for M.B.A. and B.E. (Mech.). For all other programmes, the intake is 60. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE The academic year 2011-12 for UG and PG courses commenced as per the guidelines of Anna University. Apart from class room teaching and laboratory training, the students are given exposure to latest developments/technologies by arranging Guest Lectures and industrial visits. The students are also encouraged to present technical papers and participate in technical events to develop their technical and communication skills. Quite a few students of our college have won prizes in these events. MESSAGE

This Newsletter briefly highlights the academic and other activities of the College during the odd semester of the academic year 2011-12. Three important technical programmes were conducted by the College during the reporting period. We thank the AICTE, CSIR, and BRNS for the grants received. We also thank the AU-KBC Research Centre, M.I.T. Campus, Anna University, Chennai, for providing hardware and software for Open-Source Software.

WORKSHOP/CONFERENCE/SYMPOSIUM Faculty Development Programme on CS2406 – Open Source Lab, June 22-24, 2011 Co-ordinators: Ms.B.Shanthini and Ms.Jermin Jersha The Department of Computer Science and Engineering conducted the programme on Open Source from 22nd to 24th June 2011. About 40 participants from various engineering colleges attended the program. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Siddhanath, Project Manager, HCL Technologies, Chennai.

The materials about the open source lab were distributed to the participants. Dr. C. N. Krishnan,Director, AU-KBC Research Centre, M I T Campus, Anna University Chennai was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory Function. He gave an inspiring speech on the topic of ‘From Open Source Software to Open Knowledge Systems: Transiting into an era of Knowledge abundance’. Dr. C. N. Staff Development Programme on Disaster Management for Engineering and Management Faculty, July 11-23, 2011 Co-ordinators: Dr.D.S.Ramachandra Murthy, Dr.T.L.Venkita subramanian and Dr.P.Partheeban

A two-week staff development programme on Disaster Management was conducted from 11th to 23rd July 2011. The programme was sponsored by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The contents of this programme was so designed to serve as course material for a one-semester course on Disaster Management in undergraduate and post graduate programmes. Dr.B.Bhattacharjee, Hon’ble Member, National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India, inaugurated the programme and delivered the inaugural address. He outlined the various aspects of disaster management namely, pre-disaster phase which includes prevention, mitigation and preparedness, and the post- disaster phase which includes response, rehabilitation, reconstruction and

recovery. He also released the book on Disaster Management, published by the Coordinators. This book contains reading material prepared by experts who delivered key-note papers during the programme.

Twenty-three lectures were delivered by experts during the programme. Mock exercise session was conducted and two field visits were also arranged to a relief camp of Indian Red Cross Society near Tiruvallur, and to CSIR – Structural Engineering Research Center, Taramani.

Dr.T.Srinivasa Kumar, Scientist, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, presided over the valedictory function and delivered the valedictory address. He also distributed the certificates to the participants. The programme was attended by more than 50 participants from various academic institutions. National Seminar on Design, Analysis and Health Assessment of Structures including Bridges, August 24-26, 2011 Co-ordinators: Dr.D.S.Ramachandra Murthy and Dr.P.Partheeban Integrity and health assessment of structures is very important for ensuring the safety of structures and their life management. A national seminar on Design, Analysis and Health Assessment of Structures including Bridges was conducted from 24th to 26th August 2011. Very good response was received from experts and authors for the seminar. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr.Nagesh R.Iyer, Director, Structural Engineering Research Centre – CSIR, Chennai, on 24th August 2011. While delivering the inaugural address. He highlighted the major projects carried out on health assessment of structures. Seven key-note and twenty-two contributed papers were presented during the seminar. We are grateful to the Council of Scientific and Industrial research (CSIR), New Delhi, and the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Mumbai, for sponsoring the seminar.

CO-CURRICULAR AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Sports Our College conducted inter-collegiate Anna University Zone I Tournament for foot ball and cricket during the semester. Our students have won in the following inter-collegiate sports events.

Our College Men’s Football team won the Gold Medal in Anna University Zone I Tournament 2011.

Our College Men’s Cricket team won the Bronze Medal in Anna University Zone I Tournament 2011.

Our College Men’s Football team won the Gold Medal in Chengalpattu Medical College Tournament 2011.

Our College student Mr.S.Jaganathan, II B.E. (EEE) won the Gold Medal in Anna University Inter - Zonal Boxing Tournament 2011. He is going to participate in All India Inter- University Boxing Tournament to be held at Shivaji University, Mumbai.

M.C.Arunkumar and S.Sivakumar of III B.E.(CSE) got I prize in Paper Presentation conducted by SRM University on 29th August 2011.

N. Anugraha and S. Jansi of III B.E.(CSE) got III prize in Paper Presentation at Hindustan University on 24.09.2011.

20 students from III B.E.(CSE) underwent Implant training in HCL, Uniq Technologies and Open Soft Technologies in December 2011.

7 students from III B.E.(CSE) participated in the workshop on ‘Computer Networks and Security’ at MGR University on 22nd and 23rd December 2011.

46 students from CSE department participated in workshops on ‘Hacking Forensics’ and ‘Android’ at Anna University on 27th & 29th January 2012.

Youth Red Cross, YRC

Mr.S.S.Ramadoss, Hony. Secretary and Sr.Lecturer, St. John Ambulance, Chennai, conducted First Aid Awareness Programme for YRC volunteers on 29th November 2011.

Students of our College Youth Red Cross participated in the competitions conducted by Indian Red Cross Society as part of 62nd Geneva Convention Celebrations Day. Two students, Mr.V. Gopikrishna , IV B.E. (CSE),and Mr.R.R.Suresh Maharaja, IV B.E. (ECE), won first prize in Quiz competition.

SAE Collegiate Club Students participated in several events organized by SAE.

Secured 2nd prize in Aero Design and Fabrication contest held at Sri Venkateswara Engineering College, Chittur.

Team SPARK cleared Virtual Baja SAE India – South India contest held at Dayanand Sagar Institute, Bengaluru, during August 19-20, 2011.

Our club was selected for participation in BAJA competition to be conducted in Pithampur in February 2012. Our students are enthusiastically making the all-terraine vehicle for the event with liberal financial support by our management.

Road Safety Awareness Programme

Road safety awareness programme was conducted on 6th January 2012. Mr.N.Dakshinamurthy, Former Divisional Manager, Traffic & Transportation Planning Division, Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Chennai, delivered a lecture on Road Safety. Apart from students, 35 drivers participated in the programme.

National Education Day was celebrated on 11th November 2011 commemorating the birth anniversary of Mr. Abdul Khalam Azad, First Education Minister of India. Dr.L.Mahesh Kumar, Director (Academic), St. Peter’s University delivered a special address to the students. Essay and Elocution competitions were conducted for First Year B.E./B.Tech. students and prizes were distributed.

Dr.K.Purushothaman, Prof. and HOD (Mech.), participated in the International Conference on Mechanical, Automobile and Robotics Engineering ICMAR’2011, held at Pattaya, Thailand, during October 7-8, 2011. He presented a technical paper on “Study of combustion performance and emission characteristics of a compression ignition engine operating on a diesel-orange blended with lower concentrations.” He was also chairman for one technical session.

3. Dr.R.Gayathri, Professor, M.B.A. Department, participated in the International Conference on Innovative Business Technology Strategies for Developing Countries, held at Dubai, during December 16-17, 2011. She presented a technical paper on “A comparative analysis of organizational culture in manufacturing and service sectors.”

PLACEMENT Campus Recruitment Training (CRT) Programme was conducted by T.I.M.E. Chennai Centre for the Final year B.E./B.Tech. Students from 9th to 16th August 2011.

Ms. Saranya Chandrasekaran and her team HRD – Recruitment and Campus Relations, Infosys Technologies Ltd., interacted with the Final Year B.E./B.Tech.students on 16th August 2011.

Final Year B.E./B.Tech.students participated in SPARK programme conducted by Infosys Technologies at their office on 10th September 2011.

On-campus placement drive was conducted for Final Year B.E./B.Tech.students by the following companies namely, Infosys, Vernalis Systems, Prokarma, Protechsoft Technologies, MRF Tyres, Bharat Logistic Solutions, IMRB Abacus, Syntel, Cybernet Slash Support, and Origin Learning Solutions. Our students also participated in the interview conducted by Cognizant Technology Solution at Anna University and ORACLE Financial Services at Hindustan University. Forty eight students were placed in various companies.
