Cliques: The Good, the Bad, and the UglyClique. Noun. A small group of people, with shared inter-ests, or other features in common, who spend time together and do not readily allow others to join them. Most people have experienced cliques, and most of-ten in a negative fashion. Now, what truly makes a group of friends a clique is when the try to purposely exclude people or make others more distant due to certain traits. In all reality, the adjective used to describe ‘clique’ de-pends on from which side you are on; the loner or with the group.

Cliques in Nature In nature, cliques are formed between animals and organisms in order to survive. One example would be lions; lions form into prides, or clans. In this pride, the lions hunt in organized groups and stalk their prey. These natural cliques, like the cliques in all levels of school, can be particularly brutal. When they attack, their attacks are concise and forceful, furthermore, they often kill their prey in gruesome ways. Another example of cliques in nature would be dolphins. Movies Coming Out In 2015By: Logan F.

There are movies coming out in 2015 such as Monkey Kingdom (April 17), Minions (July 10), Goosebumps (August 7), Hotel Transylvania 2 (Sep-tember 25), and Peanuts (November 6). One movie I thought was interesting was Jupiter Ascending (February 6). Jupiter Ascending is a sci-fi adventure about a young woman in the furture that gets targeted for assassination by the Queen of the Universe, and begins her destiny. I thought it was interesting because it is action packed.

What’s Happening in Y2Y? By Julia H. & Kayla H. Y2Y members played a game where you ask questions to a person and they answer and it goes to the next person. These are teen questions. Mr. Mayers created questions for his class and Y2Y used them for a fun activity. Y2Y members were also playing another game where you write down a title of a movie and you have to pass it to your right and you keep going and then at the end of the game, you see the silly answers on your paper.

The 4th Annual Y2YLock In will be held Friday January 16th from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

at the Union County YMCA.

Future City Update InterviewBy: Kaylee S. The Future City Team is on a roll! The first part of the whole future city job is finding a theme; this year it will be steampunk. We were able to get an interview with Blain K. He is working on the virtual part of Future City or SimCity. Blain has been on SimCity for 4 days working to complete the objectives. These objectives include a level 5 town hall (they are at 4), 37,000 citizens which they have exceeded, and they also have to have “owned” in the city for 10 years while they have only had it for 3 years. Not many things have delayed them but development has been a problem many time SimCity has popped up with a note about too few homes, but they soon found a way to fix that. Be ready for more updates and wish them luck.

Movie Trip DetailsWritten by: Libby C. On the 21st the 8th and 7th grade took their reward trip to Mocking Jay part 1. Everyone got popcorn, soda, and fruit snacks. There were moments when people laughed and gasped with shock. After the movie was done everyone went in front of the RAVE and took a group picture. When everyone got back on the bus we headed Polaris Mall Food Court. That was the end of our fabulous adventure.

STUCO ReportWritten by Kayla K. Did you go to the Fall Dance? Did you partici-pate in Teacher Turkey Day? The NUMS Student Council hosted both of these events back in November. The profit STUCO made from the dance will go towards some kind of community service, and will most likely go toward fill-ing the stockings of the students NUMS “adopts” for the holidays. If you didn’t catch the winners of Teacher Tur-key, Mr. Gattermeyer won first, Mr. Mayers won second, and Mrs. Wade received third. Each teacher was supposed to wear some kind of Thanksgiving themed costume. First place had to wear a turkey costume, second had to wear a pilgrim costume, and third was to wear a pie hat. Due to the pilgrim costume not fitting Mr. Mayers, Mrs. Wade wore the pilgrim costume, and Mr. Russell generously wore the pumpkin pie hat. STUCO is hosting Candy Cane sales during the week before break. You can buy a candy cane from December 16-18 during your lunch. The candy canes will be delivered on December 19.

Why does Scrooge love reindeer?Because every buck is deer to him.

What do Christmas trees and bad knitters have in common? They both drop their needles.

Snow Ice Cream By Sabrina Q.

Ingredients: 1 cup of milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup sugar 2 or 3 drops of food coloring (optional) 4-5 cups of CLEAN unpacked snow

Tip from source *To get CLEAN snow we set big bowls out on our deck while it’s snowing to collect the snow. Then we pop the bowls in our big freezer until we are ready to make ice cream. Collect snow at your own risk.

DirectionsMix together the milk, vanilla, and the sugar in a large bowl. Stir this mixture until the sugar is dis-solved. Add a few drops of food coloring if you want to. Then slowly add the snow to your mixture! Stir until smooth. Do not over stir. Then enjoy! :)

Directions for the Hot Chocolate Gift1. Start with one decorating bag and add 3 packets hot cocoa mix per cone. Make sure the mix fits nicely and all the way to the tip of the bag. Trim off about one inch of the and twist the bag. Secure with a small rubber band or use clear tape. Make sure the Wilton label is in back of the bag so it does not show.

2. Slide the filled cocoa cone inside a second decorating bag (you double the cones to keep the cooca mix separated from the toppings). Push down the sealed cocoa bag in the middle to make an indention (this is where the candy and marshmallows will sit).

3. Add 1/4 cup of peppermint crunch baking chips or chocolate chips followed by 1/2 cup of mini marshmallows. Twist the bag tight and tie closed using the red ribbon. (Op-tional)

4. Glue on two wiggly eyes and one red or brown pom pom for the Reindeer's nose and eyes. Add one brown pipe cleaner or fuzzy stick twisting and shaping them into antlers.

So that is the reindeer hot chocolate idea. This is a fun and easy 4 step process that will be a perfect present for anyone.

Steampunk Style By Riley F.

I thought since Future city got on the steampunk train I would too with fashion. Steampunk is a genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology. And steampunk fashion is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction. Specifical-ly, it involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century and often Victorian era Britain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. It’s a big thing in New York, they have party’s just for it all over the country. Look up so style trends if you are interested. I have a couple steampunk fashion trends-below to give you an idea!

(Editorial from Page 1 Continued)

Dolphins form and hunt in pods. These pods can consist of as few as 2 dolphins and can be hundreds of dolphins large in a pod. Dolphins, much the same as lions, hunt in groups with merciless hunting techniques. When dolphins choose to kill a shark for fun, they can charge into the gills of the shark causing the shark’s lungs to bruise. Eventually, the shark can no longer withstand the beatings and dies of pulmonary contusion. What We Can Learn From Natural Cliques What these cliques in nature represent are the brutality and enmity of cliques. Think back to the lions; they form groups and are quick to ward off any other lions who might be roaming around. When lions hunt, they hunt with preci-sion and force. Lions as an example also brings up another point; lionesses are often the creatures doing the hunting, which is quite similar to girls forming cliques and attacking other students. The example with dolphins however, shows that cliques can form of groups of females, males, and also groups of both males and females. The natural cliques attack in cruel fashions and they single creature out. But, what can we learn from them? Middle school and high school can be tough places to survive in, everyone under-stands that. However, what most people don’t understand is that cliques we form keep us suspended in a unilateral way of thinking. Cliques are the webs and we are the flies. We never have a chance to form new friendships, new ideals, new beliefs, or new experiences. Cliques allow very little room for change.

Do we truly need the cliques we create? As students become older, they grow and change; that change could make them “grow out” of the clique they used to be associated with. However, fellow members of the clique may not notice that an individual has changed. Thus morphing the clique they joined in order to survive, a cage. In nature, cliques are formed to help animals survive. However, the cliques can be brutal whether they are in the wild or in society. With cliques in society, we use them to survive the other cliques, establish an identity, and fulfill the need to belong. But what if, as a society, we didn’t need others or cliques to make ourselves an identity? What if we had friends with all kinds of “different” to help make us feel like we belong? If we didn’t have cliques, we wouldn’t need to try to “survive” any grade, school, or social situation. As a society we could be living instead of just surviving. If we didn’t form cliques we could be, as a human being, and as an individual--we would be a stronger and more unique individual.

*Special thanks to Mr. Gattermeyer for supplying examples for cliques in nature.*

Volunteering By Madison H.

I work in the Ohio Village as a volunteer. The process was kind of long but it's all worth it in the end. I re-cently finished the third step of becoming a character

in the village. I finished my first person interpretation class that was at the museum. My character's name is Elizabeth Abigail Bairer and she comes from a poor family. Her birthplace is Hat-field, Massachusetts where her mother died of pneumonia three days before Elizabeth's fourth birthday. Her father, Jedidiah Paul Bairer, works with their cousin Ezechiel Abraham Barrymore who she likes to refer to as "Uncle Zeke" or "Uncle Ezechiel." She came to the Ohio Village with her regular schoolhouse education and two years of education at the Lasell Seminary for girls. She currently works part time at the American House Hotel to help pay for her tuition for the Female Seminary in the Ohio Vil-lage. Elizabeth came to the Ohio Village with her father on the Ohio and Baltimore Train Station. Her family stayed home in Massachusetts. Her grandmother and grandfather live retired and her uncles are carpenters. I also got my Dickens of a Christmas schedule. There are five days for Dickens of a Christmas. This is a special event that the museum does every year. It is based on the book by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol. The activities that I am doing are cooking demonstrations in the farmhouse. I will be accompanied by Joby E. I will one day be in the school house doing a puppet show. This is an interactive puppet show where visitors can be in it, be the audience, or work the puppets. I will be accompanied by two other people. On the last day, I will be dancing. This will be 1860's styled dancing that I have to go to rehearsal for. Many will accompany me and visitors are more than welcome to come and join in. The dates for this event are December 12,13,19,20,21. The times for this event are 6-9pm (12,13,19,20) and 12-5 (21) For more details about the museum and the special event, go to the website listed below. We would love to feature others who volunteer like Madi-son does. Please let us know your story.

Samsung Galaxy s5: The Best New Phablet By: Jeremy Q., Julia H., and Kayla H. Phablet (phone/tablet) sales are expected to lead the pack in 2015. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is out now. Galaxy 5s smartphones are known for going big: on screens, specs, software tricks and, of course, sales. The 16MP sensor captures accurate colours, good contrast and masses of detail when used outdoors in good light, so it’s a superb ad-hoc tourist cam. Its improved HDR mode is one of the best we’ve used, too - it’s lightning quick and the results in tricky light are close to magic. For a start, the 16MP sensor captures accurate colours, good contrast and masses of detail when used outdoors in good light, so it’s a superb ad-hoc tourist cam. Its improved HDR mode is one of the best we’ve used, too - it’s lightning quick and the results in tricky light are close to magic.he autofocus is seriously quick. Samsung reckons it’s as fast as up to 0.3s; Using the S5 can still feel overwhelming at times, mind you. It has stickers you can edit your pictures with. The settings menu is somewhat over-stocked with options, to the extent that we gave up scrolling the icons and used the search tool. All the familiar Samsung innovations are here if you want them, includ-ing last year’s motion gestures (eye tracking, touchless scrolling, etc) neatly tucked away in their own section. It’s worth noting that none of these are as useful and intuitive day-to-day as the One (M8)’s swipe- and tap-to-unlock gestures. Oh yeah, and It is waterproof. Cost varies, but it is $199 at Verizon if you have a contract and a plan and if not then $599.
