• Spain are playing in their fourth successive EURO finals. They have missed only one final tournament (EURO '92)since the inception of the eight-team event in 1980 and were runners-up in 1984 in France. Their best performancecame 20 years previously when they beat the USSR 2-1 to win the Henri Delaunay trophy on home soil, in Madrid in1964.

• 'Chus' Pereda opened the scoring for Spain inside six minutes of the final at the Santiago Bernabéu and althoughGalimzian Khusainov drew the Soviet Union level two minutes later, Marcelino made sure of a home triumph withSpain's second goal after 84 minutes.

• This is Russia's third EURO finals appearance as an independent state and, in both 1996 and 2004, they went homeafter the group stage. They enjoyed considerable success as part of the former Soviet Union, however, winning theinaugural UEFA European Championship in 1960 – beating Yugoslavia 2-1 in the final in Paris – and finishingrunners-up in 1964, 1972 and 1988.

• As a player, Spain coach Aragonés was on the losing side for Club Atlético de Madrid against Russian outfit FCSpartak Moskva in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He scored in Atlético's 4-3 home defeat in the first leg andhis team exited the competition on away goals following a 2-1 second-leg success.

• Russia coach Hiddink has held the reins at three Spanish sides: Valencia CF (1991-94), Real Madrid CF (1998/99)and Real Betis Balompié (1999/00).

• Hiddink enjoyed a famous victory against Spain with the Korea Republic team he took to the semi-finals of the 2002World Cup. The Dutchman's South Koreans held Spain to a goalless draw in the quarter-finals before prevailing 5-3on penalties.

• At club level, Hiddink's PSV squad overcame Real Madrid on away goals in the semi-final of the 1987/88 EuropeanChampion Clubs' Cup. The following season, they surrendered their hold on the continental crown after a 3-2 aggregatedefeat by Madrid in the quarter-finals.

• Russian internationals Aleksandr Anyukov, Andrei Arshavin, Vyacheslav Malafeev, Roman Shirokov and KonstantinZyrianov were in the FC Zenit St. Petersburg team that eliminated Spanish side Villarreal CF in the UEFA Cup Roundof 32 in February. Zenit progressed on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw against a Villarreal outfit featuring Spaintrio Joan Capdevila, Santi Cazorla and Marcos Senna.

Head coach

Spain: Luis AragonésDate of birth: 28 July 1938Nationality: SpanishPlaying career: Getafe CF, Real Madrid CF, Real Oviedo, Real Betis Balompié, Club Atlético de MadridCoaching career: Club Atlético de Madrid (four times), Real Betis Balompié (twice), FC Barcelona, RCD Espanyol,Sevilla FC, Valencia CF, Real Oviedo, RCD Mallorca, Spain

Luis Aragonés faced a test of his credentials in the early stages of Spain's UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying campaign, when successive defeats in Northern Ireland and Sweden left them with three points from a possible nine. However, this vastly experienced coach soon led the Spanish out of their 'crisis' and they took 25 points out of the next 27 enroute to qualifying as Group F winners.

Born in 1938 in Hortaleza, Madrid, Aragonés represented Real Betis Balompié, Real Oviedo and RC Recreativo deHuelva as a player but made his biggest impact in a decade at Club Atlético de Madrid from 1964 where his scoringtouch and set-piece expertise earned him the nickname 'Zapatones' (Big boots). Moving straight into coaching afterretiring in 1974, the no-nonsense coach with a notoriously short temper has not always had it easy. Indeed he brieflyretired from football in 1986 due to mental illness before leading Atlético to the Copa del Rey in 1992.

His crowning achievement with Atlético came when they captured the league and cup double in 1995/96, and he thenmoved on to spells at FC Barcelona, Sevilla FC, Valencia CF, RCD Espanyol, Betis, Oviedo and RCD Mallorca beforetaking over from Iñaki Sáez as Spain coach following UEFA EURO 2004™. Aragonés's first challenge was to takeSpain to the 2006 FIFA World Cup, which he achieved via the play-offs. At the finals, Spain won many admirers asthey cruised through their group but then lost 3-1 to France in the last 16. It was their first defeat in 25 matches butAragonés had done enough to earn a new two-year contract, although he announced in November 2007 he wouldnot renew it after UEFA EURO 2008™. Russia: Guus HiddinkDate of birth: 8 November 1946Nationality: DutchPlaying career: SC Varsseveld, De Graafschap (three times), PSV Eindhoven, NEC Nijmegen, Washington Diplomats,San Jose EarthquakesCoaching career: De Graafschap, PSV Eindhoven (assistant), PSV, Fenerbahçe SK, Valencia CF, Netherlands,Real Madrid CF, Real Betis Balompié, Korea Republic, PSV, Australia, Russia

The Russian press had dubbed Guus Hiddink a coaching wizard long before a magical sequence of results conspiredto send his side to UEFA EURO 2008™. Winger Yuri Zhirkov said: "What else can you call him, given that he hastaken so many teams to World Cups and European Championships?"

Hired in April 2006 after winning another Dutch title with PSV Eindhoven and before taking unfancied Australia to theknockout stages of the FIFA World Cup, the Dutchman – who signed a new two-and-a-half year deal in March – hadpreviously steered the Netherlands and Korea Republic to World Cup semi-finals in 1998 and 2002 respectively. Hereturned to Eindhoven for 2002/03 and proved his Midas touch had not deserted him at club level either, winning thechampionship in his first term back at the PSV Stadion, adding a Dutch double in 2004/05 and running AC Milan allthe way in an enthralling UEFA Champions League semi-final. The domestic crown was successfully defended in2005/06, by which time Hiddink was also working with Australia, who he guided to the World Cup last 16 before alast-gasp penalty against Italy ended their hopes.

It was all a far cry from his undistinguished playing career, encompassing spells at SC Varsseveld, De Graafschap,PSV, NEC Nijmegen, Washington Diplomats and San Jose Earthquakes. As a coach, he joined the PSV set-up underJan Reker and Hans Kraay, taking sole charge in March 1987 and piloting the club to three Dutch titles and a defeatof SL Benfica in the 1988 European Champion Clubs' Cup final. Stints with some of Europe's leading teams -Fenerbahçe SK, Valencia CF, Real Madrid CF and Real Betis Balompié, with the Netherlands job in between – furtherenhanced his reputation before he accepted the Korean challenge in 2001.

Competition facts

UEFA European Championship: Did you know?

• Only three sides have ever won the UEFA European Championship on home soil: Spain (1964), Italy (1968) andFrance (1984).

• No side has ever retained the trophy, and no player has appeared in two victorious finals.

• Since 1980, when the tournament became an eight-team event, the hosts have only failed to reach the semi-finals– or better – twice. Italy finished second in Group 2 in 1980, when only the top side in each section progressed to thefinal, and in 2000 Belgium – co-hosts with the Netherlands, who did reach the semi-finals – came third in their section.

• UEFA EURO 2008™ is Germany's tenth successive UEFA European Championship final tournament, moreappearances than any other side – they last missed out as West Germany in 1968. The Netherlands are taking partin the finals for the sixth successive edition.

• Italy are bidding to become only the third team to hold the UEFA European Championship and FIFA World Cup atthe same time. West Germany won the European title in 1972 and added the world crown two years later, while Franceclaimed the 1998 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000™.

• A total of 15 players appeared in both those finals; for West Germany, Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer, Hans-GeorgSchwarzenbeck, Paul Breitner, Uli Hoeness and Gerd Müller and France's Fabien Barthez, Marcel Desailly, BixenteLizarazu, Lilian Thuram, Didier Deschamps, Youri Djorkaeff, Patrick Vieira, Zinédine Zidane and Christophe Dugarry.

• Having played in Manchester United FC's UEFA Champions League final victory in Moscow on 21 May, Edwin vander Sar, Patrice Evra, Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo can join the exclusive band of five players who have appeared inEuropean Champion Clubs' Cup and UEFA European Championship final victories in the same year. Luis Suárezachieved the feat with FC Internazionale Milano and Spain in 1964, while in 1988 PSV Eindhoven quartet Hans vanBreukelen, Ronald Koeman, Barry van Aerle and Gerald Vanenburg were all in the victorious Netherlands side.

• Wim Kieft and Nicolas Anelka won the European Cup with PSV and Real Madrid CF in 1988 and 2000 respectivelyyet remaining on the bench for the Netherlands' and France's European Championship triumphs in those years.Anelka's Madrid and France team-mate from 2000, Christian Karembeu, holds the unique position of being an unusedsubstitute in both final victories in the same year.

• A total of ten players have been UEFA European Championship final losers after appearing in a European Cupvictory: Sepp Maier, Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck, Franz Beckenbauer and Uli Hoeness (1976, FC Bayern Münchenand West Germany) and Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho, Nuno Valente, Costinha, Maniche and Deco (2004, FCPorto and Portugal).

• Conversely six Chelsea players – Petr Čech, Claude Makelele, Carvalho, Michael Ballack, Florent Malouda andAnelka – could join a list of four players who followed European Cup final defeat with EURO victory in the same year:Ignacio Zoco and Amancio Amaro (1964, Real Madrid and Spain) and Manny Kaltz and Hörst Hrubesch (1980,Hamburger SV and West Germany).

UEFA information

'Wonderful atmosphere'UEFA President Michel Platini has joined millions of football fans in Europe and around the world in heralding thelong-awaited arrival of UEFA EURO 2008™. "As President of UEFA I am very proud that this tournament is kickingoff," he said in Basel. "UEFA and EURO 2008 SA under COO Martin Kallen have been working hard for very manyyears to ensure the best possible conditions for players, spectators and the media. Everything is being done to ensurethat there will be a wonderful atmosphere for the fans coming to Austria and Switzerland from the whole of Europe. What is really important are the feelings and emotions that will be felt by the spectators, thanks to the games thatthey will be watching. There is going to be a lot of drama, there will be pain and joy, and the best team will be thewinner. I also hope that football will be the winner. I'm expecting wonderful emotions and I'm passing the ball on toall the players, who are key to our success."

Zero tolerance for racismThe football family and anti-racism campaigners have joined forces at the start of UEFA EURO 2008™ to deliver astrong message: racist conduct, discrimination and intolerance will have no place at the tournament, or in the future.A key gathering in Basel brought together representatives of UEFA and the FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe)network for a reception featuring former players, administrators and non-government organisations to signal thebeginning of a three-week anti-discrimination programme at UEFA EURO 2008™. The Unite Against Racismprogramme, run by the FARE network with UEFA's backing, as well as with the support of the professional players'union FIFPro, will include an advertising spot broadcast at every game – Different Languages, One Goal: No ToRacism – pitch-side boards and activities with fans, culminating in high-profile activities on the field at the semi-finalsin Basel and Vienna on 25 and 26 June.

Technical teamUEFA has announced the make-up of the expert team who will study the UEFA EURO 2008™ technical and tacticalaspects in detail. The UEFA Technical Team will consist of nine football technicians, all of whom have vast experiencein the coaching and technical field. They will be split into two groups, one based in Switzerland and comprising JerzyEngel (Poland), György Mezey (Hungary), Morten Olsen (Denmark) and Holger Osieck (Germany). The other groupwill be located in Austria and consists of FIFA Technical Director Jean-Paul Brigger (Switzerland), Roy Hodgson(England), Gérard Houllier (France) and Jozef Vengloš (Slovakia). UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh will leadthe group's activities in both countries.

Anti-doping driveIn the run-up to UEFA EURO 2008™ an unprecedented programme of out-of-competition doping controls was carriedout – including blood testing – and all 160 samples examined at the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA) accreditedlaboratory in Seibersdorf produced negative results. The results were communicated to UEFA's 12 doping controlofficers (DCOs) when they met in Lausanne on 6 June. The programme of blood controls alongside the usual urinesamples, which will continue with the testing of two players from each side in every finals match at the Swiss dopinganalysis laboratory in Lausanne, is another innovation for UEFA.

Support for fansThe "fan embassies" project is designed to provide support to fans during UEFA EURO 2008™. Apart from facilitiesat each of the eight venues where fans can go for assistance, there will also be mobile fan embassies moving fromstadium to stadium. The project is being run by people familiar with the fan scene in the participating countries, togetherwith local fan experts. It is hoped that this co-operation will also be put to use well after UEFA EURO 2008™. Theproject leaders are UEFA's long-standing partners FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) in co-operation withthe FSI (Football Supporters International), Fairplay-vidc (Austria's Vienna Institute for international Dialogue andCo-operation) and Projektorganisation Öffentliche Hand (a Swiss state project organisation).Location of fan embassies:Austria: Vorplatz Museumsquartier (Vienna); Fancamp, Messegelände (Klagenfurt); Ferdinand-Hanusch-Platz(Salzburg); Fancamp Innsbruck (Innsbruck).Switzerland: Rathausplatz (Zurich); Marktplatz (Basel); Waisenhausplatz (Berne); Place du Rhône (Geneva).
