Summary

How can we make sure we do not cross the cultural border without

knowing it during the selection process of internationals?

The more you invest in the pre selection/ offer guidance the stronger the

commitment of the candidate will be.

For international candidates it is important to:

- Offer a safe harbor

- Guidance

- Show empathy

- Take time

- Think outside of your own culture

- Guide them along the company culture

- Use the Guus Hiddink approach

Quotes

“ I chose to work in the

Netherlands because many Dutch

enterprises have a strong

international focus and I find it easy

to integrate since English is a

commonly spoken language and

the Dutch are outgoing and

welcoming.”

“In comparison to other countries I have

worked in (Germany and Spain) the

work-life balance is good and I feel well

taken care of by my employers.”

“Finding work in the Netherlands was such

a relief as it really gave me a sense of

purpose and made me feel like I was not

only a part of Dutch society but contributing

to it as well. I am thoroughly enjoying my

work experience here as people are so open

and respectful of other cultures. I have

worked all over the world but the

Netherlands is the place where I feel the

most comfortable to be myself and to show

what talents I have to offer.”

Summary

Don’t we underestimate the role

of cultural borders? Are they also

disappearing?

We do underestimate the role of

cultural borders, even though they

may seem fading away they are

there and will probably never go

away.

Use the Platinum Rule instead of the

famous Golden Rule;

Golden Rule: prescribes us to treat others,

as we would like them to treat us.

“The Platinum Rule” by treating others, as

they would like you to treat them.
