The Greater Toledo International Youth Orchestra is excited to share this musical program with our friends in Toledo, USA and our sister city in Toledo, Spain.

This program features works from three distinct musical genres. First, we featuremodern works by American composers specifically for string orchestra. Second, weperform pieces with an international flavor so that our musicians and our audiencescan get a taste of musical cultures from around the world. Lastly, we feature traditional/Chinese music, which represents Greater Toledo International Youth Orchestra’s founding as the Toledo Chinese Youth Orchestra.

The diversity of our program reflects our belief in the universality of music and our goal of bridging cultural differences through music. We are excited to share ourpassion and performance with you. Appreciating this music requires an open mindand open heart—the sort of openness that allows us to embrace the sense of vitality,connectedness, and humanity that music evokes in all of us.

The Greater Toledo International Youth Orchestra—La Orquesta Internacional Juvenilde Toledo, Ohio, EEUU—está muy entusiasmada de poder presentar este programamusical a nuestros amigos en Toledo, y nuestra ciudad hermana en Toledo, España.

El programa incluye obras de tres géneros musicales distintos. Primero, desta-camos trabajos expresamente para la orquesta de cuerda por compositores norteamericanos. Segundo, realizamos piezas con un sabor internacional de modoque nuestros músicos y nuestro público puedan conseguir un gusto musical de culturasdel mundo entero. Finalmente destacamos la música tradicional china que representa la fundación original de la orquesta juvenil.

La diversidad de nuestro programa refleja nuestra creencia en la universalidad de la música y nuestro objetivo de construir un puente entre diferencias culturales através de la música. Estamos entusiasmados para compartir nuestra pasión yactuación con ustedes. GREATER TOLEDO INTERNATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA

ounded in 2013 by conductor Yang Kun Song, The Greater Toledo

International Youth Orchestra (GTIYO) is a stringorchestra that performs a diverse repertoire,including traditional and modern Chinesemusic, as well as Western compositions. Mr. Song was the founder and the previousmusic director/conductor of the ToledoInternational Youth Orchestra (TIYO). That orchestra achieved considerable musicalnotoriety over the past 13 years under Mr. Song'sdirection as they performed in venues through-out the Toledo area and abroad. It had thedistinct honor of performing with local talentfrom the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and themembers of the Bowling Green State UniversityMusic Department. As TIYO developed overthe years, Mr. Song's reach extended to youngmusicians throughout Northwest Ohio andSouthern Michigan.

To better serve the youth in this expanded region, and redirect his focus and passion ofbridging cultures through music, Mr. Songresigned from his position with TIYO, and hasgathered some of the finest young Musiciansfrom the region. Many of these talented youngmusicians have won prestigious regional competitions, scholarships, and numerousother awards. Varied in backgrounds, cultures,and interests, the members of GTIYO share thecommon goal of increasing their knowledgeand understanding of cultures through music.

Mr. Song has a long history of success in facilitating this international exchange ofculture through music. In April 2007, he took his previous orchestra on a concert tour visitingToledo’s Sister City Qinhuangdao and Beijing in the People’s Republic of China. They alsovisited London in Ontario, Canada later thatyear. In 2008, his group performed in Europe,visiting two other Toledo Sister Cities: Poznan,Poland and Delmenhorst, Germany.

In the summer of 2009, Mr. Song lead atrip to Tanzania, East Africa that included avisit to Toledo’s Sister City of Tanga. The groupperformed at the American Embassy in Dar Es Salaam in front of world diplomats for a Fourth of July celebration. In 2010, his groupcompeted in the Summa Cum Laude Inter-national Youth Music Festival and Competitionin Vienna, Austria and visited Toledo’s SisterCity of Szeged, Hungary.

With a desire to continue expanding thebridges of international cooperation andknowledge, Mr. Song's previous orchestra trav-eled to Korea and our Sister City of Toyohashi,Japan in 2011. Finally, in late June, 2012, Mr. Song's last international trip with TIYO wasto South America, touring several cities in Peru,including Lima, Cusco and Machu Pichu.

Building on this history of success, Mr. Song looks forward to GTiYO's future as we travel to experience other countries in the pursuit of our mission.

YANG KUN SONGMUSIC DIRECTOR/CONDUCTOR

ang Kun Song, a native of Beijing, China, was born into a musical family, and began studying cello with his father at the age of nine. In 1972, he was admitted to

the Beijing Music Training Class. The following year he went to the Beijing Conservatory of Music to study with Min Yao Shen, the principle cellist in the Central PhilharmonicOrchestra of China. Mr. Song graduated from Beijing Conservatory in1976 and laterbecame the assistant principle cellist of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. He is a mem-

ber of the Beijing Musicians Association and the Performing ArtsCommittee of the Chinese Violoncello Association.

In 1988, Mr. Song was sponsored to come to the UnitedStates by Dr. William Sloan and Dr. Paul Carter, on a recom-mendation by world renowned cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. He studiedcello with Professor Steven Elisha at the University of Toledo,Ohio, and graduated cum laude in 1993.

Honored by a full scholarship, Mr. Song earned his Master’sDegree in Music Performance at Central Arkansas University inConway, studying with cello professor Felice Farrel. He was also

a member of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Song is the founder of “Trio China”formed in Little Rock. In 1995, “Trio China” toured four major cities in China: Beijing,Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, and he gave master classes at conservatories.

A highlight of his studies at Central Arkansas University was a second opportunityto serve as demonstrating cellist in a master class taught by the respected performerand educator Janos Starker (the first time was at Indiana University in 1992). After graduating from Central Arkansas University, Mr. Song returned to Toledo, where hepresently resides. For several seasons he performed with The Lima Symphony.

Mr. Song also maintains a private studio where he teaches all string instruments.Several of his students have won Toledo Symphony League scholarships. Two of his stu-dents have won the Toledo Symphony Orchestra (TSO) Young Artist Competition andToledo Youth Orchestra (TYO) Concerto auditions, earning the privilege to perform withthese fine orchestras. In March of 2006, three of his students won the Northwest OhioBuckeye String Competition for Elementary, Junior High, and High School Divisions. In March 2013, his students won first and second place honors in all age divisions of theDistrict competition and second place honors in elementary and junior high divisions at the State level. He has many orchestra students that have been selected to perform nationally at Carnegie Hall in New York City as members of the American High School Honors Orchestra Performance Series. Many of his students play in theToledo Youth Orchestras.

In 2008, Mr. Song was appointed Guest Cello Professor at Yanshan University’sCollege of Performing Arts in Qinhuangdao, China. He is the founder, Music Directorand Conductor of The Greater Toledo International Youth Orchestra (GTiYO).

Currently, Mr. Song is a music educator for the Toledo Public Schools. He is marriedto Sharon Du and has a daughter, Lee Ann, who plays both piano and cello, andattends Harvard University.

Yang Kun Song en 2013 para darles opor-tunidates a más alumnos en el contornode la ciudad de Toledo, Ohio de serparte de una orquesta . Toledo, Ohiotiene fronteras con los estados deMichigan y Indiana que ahora compren-den parte de la orquesta. La orquestaentera cuenta con 45 alumnos entre lasedades de 12 y 18 años. Tocan unrepertorio diverso de música occidental ycomposiciones tradicionales y modernaschinas. Los músicos jóvenes, de distintosintereses, raíces, y culturas, comparten la meta común de aumentar suentendimiento de otras culturas atravezde la música.

En 2000 el Director Song había fundado la original “Orquesta Juvenil deToledo, Ohio” cuyos miembros han ganado becas y premios prestigiososregionales. La orquesta ha tenido muchoéxito y para los jóvenes, experieneciasinolvidables durante sus visitas a las ciudades hermanadas con Toledo, Ohio.

En 2007 hicieron una gira por nuestra ciudad hermana Quinhuangdao y tam-bién Beijing en China. También visitaronLondon, Ontario, Canada. En 2008tocaron juntos con jóvenes de las ciudades hermanas de Poznan, Polonia y Delmenhorst, Alemania.

Con un deseo de aumentar susexperiencias internacionales y extendersus manos a jóvenes de otros países, viajaron a la ciudad de Toyaoashi, Japónen 2011. Por fin, en 2012 pudieron visitary tocar en Lima y Cusco, Perú.

Con esta nueva orquesta regional que se ha abierto a más alumnos, eldirector Song espera continuar y aumentar estas experiencias interna-cionales, cumpliendo la missión de laorquesta.

ang Kun Song Procedente de Beijing, China de una familia musical, empezó sus estudios de vilolo ncelo a los nueve años con su padre. Se graduó

del Conservatorio de Beijing en 1976 y se hizo segundo violoncelista principal de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Beging. En 1988, con la recomendación del famoso violon-celista Yo-Yo-Ma, recibió becas para seguir sus estudios en los EEUU. En Central

Arkansas University, donde recibió su maestría, y en IndianaUniversity, el reconocido Janos Starker le pidió ser intérpretepara sus clases magistrales. En 1995 fundó “El Trío Chino” con el cual fue de gira a Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai y Guangzhou. En 2008 fue nombrado Profesor Visitante de violoncelo en laUniversidad de Yahnshan en Quinhuangdao, China.

Regresó a Toledo donde tiene un estudio privado en queenseña toda clase de instrumentos de cuerda. Varios de susalumnus han recibido becas de la Sinfonía de Toledo que lespermitió tocar con su Orquesta Juvenil. Muchos han sido

seleccionados para tocar en Carnegie Hall en Nueva York con la American HighSchool Honors Orchestra en su serie de conciertos.

agmar Varela has helped to arrange GTiYO’s trip to Toledo, Spain in July. She isthe Vice President of The Association of Two Toledos and a long time member. She is aSenior Lecturer Emeritus in Spanish at the University of Toledo. At Wright State Universityin Dayton, Ohio she graduated with a BA in Spanish and German. She received herMaster’s degree in Spanish and German Language and Literature from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and has an ABD in Spanish literature from Indiana University,Bloomington. Taking both college and high school students on study abroad programsto Spain, Germany and Mexico has been an important part of her life. Of the 21 programsshe has led, 11 of them have been from the University of Toledo, OH to the University ofCastile-La Mancha in Toledo, Spain. Dagmar is looking forward to accompanying theorchestra this summer on their musical journey to the first Sister Cities in the world, established in1931 –Toledo, OH to Toledo, SP—as well as to the International MusicFestival in Segovia, Spain.

PROGRAM NOTES

Falstaff Overture opens a drama giocoso (jocular drama) in two acts by Antonio Salieri, set to a librettoby Carlo Prospero Defranceschi after William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. The composermoves the plot and structure away from the style of Elizabethan dramas and closer to the standard conventions of late 18th century opera buffa, which was less formal and more comedic. The overture is in rondo form with many repetitions of its opening theme.

Salute to Irving Berlin is a medley of American composer Irving Berlin’s greatest hits, including “There’sNo Business Like Show Business,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” and “God Bless America.” “There’s No Business LikeShow Business” is the famous show stopping song from Annie Get Your Gun (1946). “Puttin’ on the Ritz” is associated with Fred Astaire, who danced to it in the 1946 film Blue Skies. Berlin’s “God Bless America”was sung at his funeral to remember the talented man who had delighted America with his musicalgenius until the ripe old age of 101.

Con te partiro “Time to Say Goodbye” is an Italian song famously performed by Andrea Bocelli atthe Sanremo Festival in 1995. The phrase literally means “with you I will leave.” A later version of the song,sung partly in English by soprano Sarah Brightman, became a chart-topping hit that has sold over 12 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best selling singles of all time.

The Day of Freedom was written by Chinese composer Wang-Hua Chu. Born in 1941, Wang Hua’scompositions were first played at the First National Music Week of China when he was just 14 years old.He studied piano and composition at the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing and moved to Australiain the late 1980’s to study at the University of Melbourne. Having grown up during the Cultural Revolution,this piece was inspired by his desire to leave China in its time of domestic turmoil and have the freedomto study music more creatively abroad.

Appalachian Reflection was written by Percy Hall, who has been a music educator in public schoolsfor over 40 years. This arrangement begins and ends with popular fiddle tunes, starting with Old Joe Clarkand ending with the exciting and technical Devil’s Dream. The contrasting interlude, Just Before theBattle, Mother, is appropriate in this selection about Appalachia because the first shots fired in the Civil War took place in Appalachia.

Joyful Harvest was written by Huang Xiao Zhi in 1989. It is composed in a traditional Henan Bang Zi Style,which reflects the music of the Henan Province of Central China. Henan covers a large part of the fertileand densely populated plains south of the Yellow River (“henan” literally means south of the river),hence, the people grew much of their food on these fertile lands and plentiful harvests are always joyfulcelebrations that involved singing, dancing, and coming together with family.

Across the Water, Lin Jia Qing: This wistful piece, popularized by famous Taiwanese singer Teresa Tengin 1975, first debuted as the main theme of a romantic movie entitled Across the Water. The song depictsa young woman’s longing for a lover she hopes to find “across the water.”

Hoe Down is a dance in quick movement most likely related to the jig, reel, or clog dance. According tothe website “Streestwing,” a hoedown was a virtuoso display of footwork, where a succession of dancerseach tried to outdo the previous dancers. This meant that if the last dancer was the best one, the audiencewould cheer wildly. The most famous hoedown in classical music is the section entitled Hoedown from theRodeo ballet by Aaron Copland (1942). The most frequently heard version is from the Four Dance Episodesfrom Rodeo, which Copland extracted from the ballet shortly after its premiere; the dance episodeswere first performed in 1943 by the Boston Pops conducted by Arthur Fiedler.
