HESA Celebrates Class of 2015
On May 9, HESA said farewell to our
class of 2015 at the annual Hooding
Ceremony. Faculty, fellow students,
family members, and SPA supervisors
gathered at the Ohio Union’s US Bank
Theatre to honor the 2015 MA and PhD
graduates.
Dr. Jennifer Gilbride-Brown, Senior
Lecturer and SPA Program Director,
called on the class of 2015 to continue
to develop their intellectual curiosity
while wrestling with theoretical and
practical complexities. “The issues of
our time are puzzling and complex; our
work requires humility, intellectual rigor,
and a commitment to justice in order to
even attempt to meet current
challenges.”
This year HESA recognized six PhD
and 30 MA graduates at the event,
during which faculty advisors share
personal comments about each
graduate and present them with a hood
(MA) or stole (PhD). MA Graduates
Danny Kim, Ashley Pryor, and
Gadise Regassa shared a film that
captured reflections on the MA Class of
2015 journey.
Special awards were also announced.
This year, Dr. Davida Haywood (MA
’04, PhD, ‘09), Senior Executive
Director of the Multicultural Center,
received a combined “Friend of SPA”
and “Outstanding SPA Supervisor”
award. The HESA and SPA
community wishes Dr. Haywood well
as she transitions to her new role as
Vice President for Student Affairs at
Alabama State University this summer.
Deirdre Rosenfeld and Tricia Shalka,
both PhD candidates, received the
Porterfield-Dickens Award for their
research projects. (See page 5 for
more details.)
Finally, graduates Caleb Craft and
Amanda McCann received the Robert
F. Rodgers Outstanding Student
Award. This award, named in honor of
“Dr. Bob,” is given to graduates who
have made lasting contributions to the
program.
In addition to HESA faculty, Dr.
Javaune Adams-Gaston, Vice
President for Student Life, participated
in the event. “You have worked hard,
you have done well, and we are so
proud of you,” Dr J. told graduating
students in her welcoming remarks.
The new HESA alumni have a variety
of upcoming plans. Some will continue
to work at Ohio State and some will
work all over the country.
Congratulations to our new alumni!

Emerging Professional Awards
This spring SPA named two recent HESA graduates as the 2015 recipients of the Emerging Professional Award: Justin Samuel (MA ’12) and Sam Al-Khoury (MA ’12). These awards represent outstanding contributions to the professional early in one’s career. Justin is currently working at the University of Texas at Austin as a Hall Coordinator and Sam is the Program Manager for Student Engagement and Activities at the University of Washington. Congratulations Sam and Justin!
Porterfield-Dickens Awards
Deirdre Rosenfeld and Tricia Shalka, HESA PhD candidates, received the 2015 Porterfield-Dickens Award. This award funds MA and/or PhD research projects and was created to memorialize two alumni, William Porterfield and Cynthia Dickens, who made extraordinary contributions to the field of Higher Education and Student Affairs before their early and untimely deaths. Deirdre’s critical feminist grounded theory study aims to understand higher education institutional responses to Title IX policy related to sexual violence. The purpose of Tricia’s constructivist grounded theory study is to understand how college student identity development is impacted by the experience of trauma. Congratulations Tricia and Deirdre!

For the past three years Tricia has held an assistantship with the Columbus College of Art and Design, where she was the Institutional Assessment coordinator within the division of Student Affairs. The SPA program will benefit from Tricia’s keen intellect, administrative skills, and general affability. Welcome Tricia! Former SPA GAA Deirdre Rosenfeld begins an assistantship position in Student Conduct this summer.
