Mon-day, Nov. 23, 7:30 p.m. A regional premiere of New York City performance artist Kyle deCamp’s latest multimedia piece. “Urban Renewal” is a meditation on perception, public policy and the signifi cance of buildings lived in, from a child’s rigor-ously unsentimental point of view. In this solo performance, deCamp maps an experience of growing up in Chicago in the chaotic ’60s, caught in the crosshairs of power and history. A conversation with the artist will follow this event. This special program is made possible in part with public funding from the New York State Council on the Arts’ Electronic Media & Film Presentation Funds, administered by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.

There are those among us who can remember a time when the poinsettia wasn’t one of our holiday plants. They’ve only recently arrived on the holiday scene.

Before continuing, I need to air a pet peeve of mine. The word poinsettia is pro-nounced “poin-set-ee-ah” not “poin-set-ah”. There are those who argue that either version is correct. I beg to differ.

The poinsettia was cultivated by the Aztecs in Mexico B.C. (Before Cortez). Called Cuetlaxochitl, it was a symbol of purity and was highly prized by the Aztecs. Later, the fl owers were used by Franciscan priests in nativity processions in colonial Mexico. Mexican folklore holds that the poinsettia or ‘fl ower of the Holy Night’ appeared during a miracle that occurred on Christmas. A boy who came to the church on Christmas was so poor that he had nothing to offer the Christ child. In shame, he fell to his knees and prayerfully asked God to forgive him. When he stood up, the fi rst ‘fl ower of the Holy Night’ appeared from the soil at his feet so he would have a gift to offer.

Eventually, around 1830, the fi rst U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, saw the plants, and sent some home to South Carolina. Poinsett, like so many early Americans, was a respected amateur botanist. He propagated his plants and shared them with friends and botanical gardens throughout the U.S. From that time, English speaking countries have known the poinsettia.

Around 1906, a German immigrant, Albert Ecke of California thought that the easy-to-grow poinsettia might make an interesting cut fl ower. It’s habit of producing bright red leaves, or bracts, just before the solstice seemed to make it a natural for the holiday sea-son. His idea caught on, especially in California and the southwest. Over the years, Albert and his son Paul began breeding poinsettias for larger bracts and bracts of different colors. They eventually developed varieties that performed well in small pots. The modern poinset-tia plant was born. Years of hard work and experimentation blossomed into a huge business with the Ecke family at the center. Most of the poinsettias grown today are from cuttings produced at the huge Ecke Poinsettia Ranch in California. They continue to develop new va-rieties. We now have white, pink speckled, bi-colored and new yellow poinsettias, all thanks to the efforts of the Ecke family. Maybe they should be called “Eckeias”. Nah.

Another tropical that has found its way into the American Holiday scene is the Christmas Cactus. Like the poinsettia, the Christmas Cactus is a short day bloomer. This means that decreasing day length is the trigger for the fl owering period to begin. The ances-tors of our modern Christmas cacti are native to the forests and jungles of South America.

Although a true cactus, the Christmas cactus seems to break all the rules of cactus culture. In its native environment, the Christmas cactus (Zygocactus truncatus, or Schlum-bergera bridgesil), and it’s relatives, the Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncatus, or Zygocactus truncatus) and Easter cactus (Rhipsalidopsis gaertnerl), are all epiphytes. In other words, these are cacti that grow in trees! These forest or jungle cacti grow their roots into the bark of their host tree. Their only access to moisture and nutrients is from rain and droppings that fall from above. When we think of cacti, we automatically think of the desert and bright sunlight. These forest cacti always grow under a canopy of trees and are never exposed to the full sun of the desert. The environment that these cacti have adapted to is that of the warm, humid jungle with sunlight fi ltered through the canopy of the forest. The adaptation of the Christmas cactus and its tropical cousins make it an excellent candidate for use as a houseplant. Their habits of fl owering just before the winter solstice make it a natural for display during the holiday season. Thanks for the read.
