What can we do that is new this year in our synod, our congregations and outside of ourselves into our communities? I started something new this Christmas by giving gifts from the ELCA Good Gifts Catalog. Our families gave a goat, a pig, a rooster, 3 sets of chicks and a water filter to help others get a hand up to make their families happy, well fed and able to support themselves. As a board, we hope to inspire you to look at new ways of being Women in the ELCA. So we want you to help us by giving us suggestions for what you want at your convention in the fall. Volunteer to host and support our efforts in planning events at which you can come to learn, refresh yourself and be inspired by all who come. Remember that our leaders at WELCA have lots of resources for our congregational units, so look for all these resources on the website at www.womenoftheelca.org. Make plans to attend our retreat in April. Let’s get a couple of people from each unit to attend! We have a new location for all of us to learn ANEW. Our task is to tell the story of Jesus in whatever way we can—by words, by actions, by being who we are in this world we inhabit. Kathy Newton OLYMPIC CLUSTER ELECTION OF OFFICERS From Linda Zeh, President Olympic Cluster Do you look forward to the Olympic Spring Event each year? Have you ever wondered how this event is created? The women who serve on the board are committed to working as a team to plan for this annual event. We share in the joy of how God directs us throughout the planning process. At the 2018 Annual Meeting we need to elect new officers and members: Vice President (assists president and takes minutes in absence of secretary); Secretary (takes minutes of the meetings and helps with advertising and printed material for this event); Treasurer (provides report of income and expenses for annual meeting and oversees transfer of funds to hosting church); and an opening for a board member to join our team. Your Cluster needs you! Your public relations, event planning, and leadership skills are needed to ensure the continued success of the Olympic Cluster. Our board meets four times from September to April to plan the Spring Event and we have fun! If you have an interest, if you are looking for a meaningful way to serve the Women of the ELCA, please contact Linda Zeh at 360-277-9069.

The Southwestern Washington Synodical Women’s Organization board held their first meeting with newly elected members on November 4, 2017 at The Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd in Olympia, WA. President Kathy Newton gave devotions on “No Gift Is Too Small” from the book, Bible Women Speak to Us Today. President Kathy Newton gave each board member a gift of an angel necklace which represents that , on any given day, we are an angel to someone we meet or an angel will show up for us. Convention Evaluation forms were reviewed. Beth Lindell gave a report on the 2018 Spring Retreat. It will be held on April 20-22, 2018 at Black Diamond Camp, Auburn, WA. Board members were each given an assignment to write articles for the Swatch on the Goals for 2017-2018 which are printed in the Convention Bulletin of Reports. Ideas for enrich-ment of board meetings included: a Bible study , guest speakers and craft ideas . These ideas will be researched for future meeting dates. The Olympic Cluster Spring Celebration will be held on April 28, 2018 at Elim Lutheran Church in Port

Orchard, WA. The meeting ended in prayer.

Meet Your New President I have been a member of Women of the Lutheran Church since 1964. My church activities have included: attendngat 4 Triennials, multiple retreats, con-

ventions, and Bible Study events. holding offices at many levels of my church life Leading Bible studies Singing in choirs Leading worship services and even preaching

a sermon or two on Lay Sundays I have just followed in the footsteps of my mother, and have been guided by the inspiration I received from many other women of the church. I graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and taught school in Terry, MT and Longview, WA. I completed a MA in librarianship which taught me to be organized. I was co-owner of a quilt shop for 5 years. So that tells you what some of my hobbies would be: reading, quilting, beading, and knitting. With my husband, I have traveled to 49 of 50 states and will cover more places in the future. We have two grown children and two grown grandchildren. The grandchildren keep us busy with volleyball and basketball games (2 years left of Linfield College basketball). A wedding in 2018 is planned by our granddaughter. Kathy Newton
