Southern Dunes Win for Mendez Quinn, Rogers, and Wood Win Flights
Gennifer Mendez of North Port defeated
Diane Lang of Weston 4&3 to capture
the 76th FWSGA State Amateur Match
Play Championship at Southern Dunes
Golf and Country Club May 2-6,
2005.
The week started out at the Host Course
with its broad fairways, abundant greens
and lazy swaying rough lines that breach
for a few wayward tee shots, and enough
sand to bring the beach inland for miles.
The well bunkered, larger than life
fairways become decidedly narrower
closer to the green making shot accuracy
a requirement to score well. A course
that proved to be fi rm but fair, offering
an honest score for an honest shot.
Playing 6,027 yards, 60 contestants
teed off Monday, May 2nd for the 32
Championship spots.
A typical Florida day, hot and humid, did
not deter Valerie Melvin of Champions
Gate to a fi nely fashioned one under par
71. The medalist would prove to be the
only score under par for the day. Leslie
Smith of Jacksonville and Ann Pohira
of Winter Park followed with matching
73's. Terrell Italiano, the 1999 Champion
followed with 74.
On Tuesday the first round matches
started and all winners moved on
while the losers went into
consolation fl ights. Matches pitted
champions against champions and
friends against friends, producing a
day of tears and smiles, mixed with
the heat and the humidity.
Mendez, 17, the 12th seed, defeated
7th seed Diane Lang 4&3 in the
fi nal match to secure the title. In
route to the fi nals Mendez defeated
Sharon Keil in the first round 1
up. In the second round, Mendez
rallied back from fi ve down with fi ve
holes left to win the fi nal fi ve holes and
win the match in 19 holes versus Sarah
Phillips-Durst. Gennifer advanced
to the quarterfi nals and upset 4th
seed Terrell Italiano 2&1. In the
semifi nals, Mendez defeated Mary
Jane Hiestand 3&2 to advance to
the fi nal match.
Diane Lang of Weston defeated
Tama Caldabaugh in her first
match and then went on to play
Reggie Parker. Parker took Lang
to 19 holes before Lang closed the
door. The next morning, Lang went
on to defeat Kim Goedecke in the
quarterfi nals and in the afternoon
semifi nal it took her the full 18 holes
to close out Ann Pohira to reach the
fi nal match.
Golf is unique. It's not what you
drive, if you can drive, it's where you
drive it. Gennifer had a great driving
record for the week. A couple of
close calls but no infractions. She
was the last one standing.
In the fi rst fl ight, Therese Quinn, of
Jacksonville, defeated Kathy Westlund,
of Fort Myers, 3&2. The second fl ight
featured Pat Rogers, of Tampa, defeating
Marsha Funk, of Palm Beach Gardens, 1
up. the third fl ight had Christina Wood,
of Vero Beach, defeating Christine
Martin, of Clearwater, 4&3.
The matches this week produced many
true golfers. She [Mendez] appreciates
the privilege of being able to play the
game; treasures its values and traditions;
respects the games rules and plays

Time To Get Involved
FWSGA's exciting Championship season is drawing to a close. But there are still many events and activities to keep you active. Members over 50 years, the State Senior Match Play Championship will be held September 18-22 at Bear Lakes Golf Club in West Palm Beach or get a male partner and join us at The Forest Country Club in Fort Myers for the Fall Mixed Championship on October 28-30. This is always a very popular event that sells out. So, go online and get your entry in.Don't want to travel far? There are still 7 District Tournaments yet to be held around the state. These local tournaments offer you a variety of competition formats. Some are team 4-Balls and
others are individual formats. Check our website for dates locations and entry forms. With the fall club season soon to be active, you can help our Junior Girls' Scholarship Fund by conducting a Penny-a-Stroke event(s) at your club. What is Penny-a-Stroke? It is just a name FWSGA attaches to a club based program de-signed to raise money for our scholarship fund. This fundraising is done by members at their home golf clubs. You can raise money on your play days or any other designated day. We suggest having your ladies donate (tax deductible) a penny-a-stroke for every shot played on that day. (We will happily accept any amount not just pennies.) If that concept doesn't work, choose one that will work for your club. Your club can conduct as many fundraising events throughout the calender year as they like. We keep track of all your club's donations. At the end of each year, we award the Top Fundraiser for each District as well as the overall Top State Fundraiser. Remember your dollars support our scholars. If you would like more information, contact either Executive Director Kelly Tarala or Vice President Dean LaFerriere.FWSGA has made signifi cant fi nancial commitments to our 4 girls on scholarship. With the cost to attend a state school surpassing $10,000 per year, we are increasing our annual grants to $5,000 per student. We are confi dent that through our fundraising efforts like the Charity Golf Tournament and the Penny-a-Stroke program we can meet this obligation. As we head into the winter months, FWSGA will be introducing a new type of competition. Starting in February 2006 and running through March, we will be conducting a Club Team Championship. Each of our 8 Districts will run a one day com-petition. Winners and runners up at the District level will advance to State Finals. Later this fall, all the particulars will be mailed to member clubs and the club's ladies golf association presidents. We hope you will stay involved and active all year long. Good golfi ng and see you soon. -Susan
Lang and Ritter Top Mixed Team Championship On June 4th and 5th, the PGA National Golf Club played host to the 2005 Summer Mixed Team Championship. A fi eld of 29 teams competed on the Champion Course for the Championship Crystal.Defending champions Diane Lang and Doug Ritter tied on the fi rst day with Mary Kozak and Ryal Lancaster with a 71 at one under par. But while Kozak and Lancaster stayed steady at 71, Lang and Ritter sharpened their game and fi nished with a 69 and a two day total of 140. The magnifi cent weather only helped add to the beautifully serene setting and helped to make the competitor's mission more pleasant. This strong fi nish put them at 4 under par, thus making them the 2005 FWSGA Mixed Team Champions. The 2005 FWSGA Mixed Team Championship was a huge success. A special thanks to all the participants, the PGA National Golf Club for hosting and putting together a fantastic luncheon, Kelly Tarala for her leadership and guidance, Diana Black for her expertise and tact on the golf course. What's the Ruling?
-By Tisha Vogell, Director District III
June 20-22, 2005 the Florida Women's State Golf Association conducted the 46th Annual Junior Girl's Championship at Lake Buena Vista
Golf Course in Orlando.
Lake Buena Vista is a lovely venue for a Junior Championship and the personnel at LBV were wonderful to work with. An unusual feature
at this golf course is the lateral hazard situations on the right and left of most fairways. This means the shot must be straight and true or the
player will incur a penalty stroke under rule 26-1c.
The fi ve relief options for 26-1 if the ball is in a lateral water hazard would be (1) play the ball as it lies (no penalty);{not an option, thick
woods and water} Under penalty of one stroke, (2) play the ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played;
{maybe, but who wants to try that shot again?}; (3) drop a ball behind the lateral hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last
crossed the margin of the lateral hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind
the water hazard the ball may be dropped; {not an option, thick woods and water}; (4) drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-
lengths of and not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the lateral water hazard or (ii) a point on
the opposite margin of the lateral water hazard equidistant from the hole. {"Can't get there from here"}
Thus the only viable option is to take your medicine (1 stroke penalty) and use the two club length relief option. Simple, you say? Well the
problem with this solution winds up being a "pace of play nightmare" as most of the lateral hazards are within two inches of the cart path.
The two club length relief is on the path. In this case the spot needs to be marked on the path and subsequently a ball dropped within this two
club length relief. We all know how a golf ball bounces on cart paths. Inevitably the ball would bounce back in the lateral hazard or more
than two club lengths from where it fi rst struck a part of the course and at times it would roll nearer the hole, each requiring a re-drop. [Rule
20-2c (ii)], [Rule 20-2c (vi)], [Rule 20-2b]
The point at which the ball struck the cart path on the re-drop was marked and the ball subsequently placed. Now we are involved with the cart
path, immovable obstruction, from which theres is one club length "free relief" if desired. (Rule 24-2). If relief is desired, the player should
attain her nearest point of relief by using the club with which she would have made the next stroke, assume address position, direction of play
and swing for such a stroke with relief from the path, no nearer the hole. This spot is marked and one club length (with any club in her bag),
no nearer the hole is accomplished. The player drops her ball within this area and the play is on.
Know the rules!
SAVE THE DATE!Mark your calenders now for the second annual Junior Girls' Char-
ity Tournament to be held at Champion's Gate Golf Course in
Orlando on Sunday, December 11, 2005. This year's event promises
to be a sell-out with a new site, new format and new divisions!
The event will be played on the International Course at Champion's
Gate. The format is a "shamble"- everyone on the team hits a drive,
the best one is selected, then each player plays her own ball from
that spot into the cup. The two best balls of the team are used.
You need not be a member of FWSGA to enter. There will be
three team divisions: all women, mixed team, and all men. Each
of the divisions will be fl ighted based on the number of teams in
that division.
Watch for more information as we continue to work on exciting
details of this tournament. Get your team together now and be
ready when entries open!
