It is particularly well served with surface transport links: Southampton is 5 miles to the south; the M27 motorway is within a mile and the rail station, within 50 miles of the Passenger Terminal, making it possible to get to London Waterloo in less than an hour. Since purchasing the Airport in 1990, British Airports Authority (BAA) has spent approximately f25M on a major development programme renewing buildings, landside infrastructure and upgrading the airside aprons and service network. Currently used by 10domestic and international carriers offering services to 19 national and international destinations, the airport’s annual passenger traflic of approximately 500 OOO is forecast to double by early in the next century. The new 9000m2 terminal, built for less than f7M, is the centrepiece of the Fig 1. View of airport Fig 2. Location plan The Structural EngineedVolume 74/No 4/20 February 1996 53
