Greetings and welcome to our newsletter for November 2016. Our events generally wind down in October but members still managed to get out and about on more social events including a visit to The Mayflower in Southampton to see Mamma Mia while another group enjoyed an evening on the Real Ale Train on the Mid-Hants Railway. We will look to book for a summer evening real ale train in 2017. Our first meeting to discuss the New Forest Run for 2017 was well attended. The minutes from that meeting were circulated and I have had some members contact me to offer their support and assistance and many thanks to them. Since then I have had confirmation from The South Lawn Hotel that we can use there grounds and function room and also from The Huntsman of Brockenhurst for using their skittle alley on the evening before the run. I will update the record sheet for the run accordingly and reissue in due course. I was unable to make the mid-monthly due to ‘taxi’ duties but I understand a small group turned out at The New Queen. As we head into November there is a mid-monthly on Wednesday 16 November at The Luzborough near Romsey and a tour of The Flack Manor Brewery on the evening of Thursday 17 November. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the brewery tour but I am sure the nineteen members who have enrolled will have a good evening. I had hoped to arrange some more week day trips out but have been engaged with some consultancy work for the next few weeks. I have received some nominations for Member of the Year but just wish to remind all members to get your nomination to me by the mid-monthly in November please. Enjoy your events this month and safe driving.

Editors Notes:

Member of the Year 2016

As we approach the autumn period it is that time of year for members to consider who, in their opinion, should be considered for the annual open vote of who is ‘Member of the Year 2016’. There are no criteria to assess; it is a personal reflection with opportunity being provided to all members. A voting slip is attached after the Contacts section so you can remove from the newsletter, make your nomination anonymously, and hand to the Club Secretary by mid-monthly November please. The presentation will be made at the Christmas Dinner.

Hi everyone, things are now starting to slow down a little on the MG events front, just as everything and everybody will be getting busier with preparations towards the festive season. I have, therefore, held back a couple of articles to use in the coming months when there are no runs and thus the material for the Newsletter will inevitably become less. Thanks very much to Fiona and Robin for their articles and reminders, supplied for this month’s edition. I hope to see you all at Club night on Wednesday. Stay safe and healthy!!

Tamar Valley People & Places Run – Sunday 18th September 2016 On the morning of Saturday 17

th September, six cars left from the Empress of Blandings, collecting three

more at the Merley lay-by for a group run down to Yelverton, north of Plymouth, where we met up with two more 1009 cars. We were joining Tamar Valley MGOC for their fourth bi-annual People & Places as part of a promise made in 2015 to support them after they came up to our New Forest Run, and took the team and individual skittles prize! The run had been limited to fifty cars and after 23 cars from TVMGOC, Southampton & New Forest came up with eleven. Heavy traffic on the A35 and A31 gave us a slow journey to Fenny Bridges where we stopped for a very good light lunch break at The Greyhound Country Inn. Although late, we had managed to contact the pub, and were all welcomed in on our eventual arrival. The owner asked us to line the cars up outside for a photo opportunity which we duly agreed to.

Lined up at The Greyhound Country Inn, Fenny Bridges

Quicker progress was made after this via the M5 where Roy & Kris headed off on the A30 to see old stomping grounds around Tavistock while we continued down the A38 to Ivybridge and then across the southern edge of Dartmoor via Cornwood, Wotter and Bickleigh before joining the A386 Tavistock road to the Moorland Garden Hotel just south of Yelverton. Tamar Valley MGOC had arranged a ‘meet and greet’ evening which we joined after our dinner. The start on Sunday at Plympton was about 9 miles from the hotel and we all managed to get there just before the first cars started leaving. Coffee and bacon butties were available from a local café.

The run was sub-divided with a mid-way stop at Roadford Lake after about 54 miles, where meals and drinks were available to purchase. Two intermediate stops were incorporated at Postbridge and Okehampton Castle with the route requiring a zero of the trip meter at each stop. The first half route took us north from Plympton up onto Dartmoor via Dousland and Rundlestone taking in Princetown and Dartmoor Prison and across to Moretonhampstead.

Out on Dartmoor with Roy & Kris and Linda & Nick

From there we headed generally west via Sticklepath and Bratton Clovelly to Roadford Lake, northeast of Launceston.

The mid-way stop at Roadford Lake The second half route of about 41 miles had one stop for a re-zero at The Royal Inn at Horsebridge and worked its way south via Stowford and Chillaton with an excursion west across the Tamar River into Cornwall then back down the Tamar Valley to finish at the Moorland Garden Hotel for a superb cream tea and prize-giving. During the cream tea prizes were awarded for the furthest travelled car and the largest team entry. Our members Tony & Penny won furthest travelled as they actually live in Northampton while we won the prize for largest entry.

On Monday we dispersed for more sightseeing with some heading off to Morewellham Quay on the River Tamar, formerly a historic port which served the local copper mines. Others headed to Dartmouth for a guided tour of the Britannia Naval College on the Monday.

Well done and thanks also to 1009 for an excellent weekend in great company.

Apologies to Fiona, Tony & Penny who were not around for the photocall! Loads of photos available on website and Shutterfly.

New Forest Re-Run – Sunday 25th September 2016 We haven’t done this for a while so it didn’t take much of a decision to arrange a re-run of the New Forest Run for those who were involved in the organising and missed the run and for those who just wanted to do it again. Eleven cars turned up at East Boldre although two more were unable to join us due to a sick cat and a failed key fob for an MGF!!

With all navigators armed with a route book, modified for the final part as we were not stopping at New Milton Recreation Ground, the cars set off soon after mid-day with the intention of stopping for a mid-run break at The Red Shoot. However, progress was slower than expected, confirming the issue on the run in June that those cars which arrived while we were still setting up had either driven too fast for the speed limits, missed significant sections of the route or just come straight from East Boldre to New Milton!!!

As Sunday turned into a nice sunny day there was plenty of traffic around and nearly all the potential stops were full. As we were losing time it was decided to adopt the short route which eventually got all the cars to the South Lawn Hotel for about 1520, in time for our planned afternoon roast lunch.

Unfortunately while driving through Burley, Tony & Penny had a strange sound from the rear of their MG TF160 but managed to reach South Lawn. On arrival and inspection it was noted the engine had dropped to the offside. The RAC were called whilst we enjoyed our dinner after which the RAC engineer found two sheared bolts from the engine mounting. As the car was un-driveable a suitable lift was arranged which eventually turned up about 1830 although this driver only took them as far as Rownham’s Services. There, they waited for another vehicle which eventually delivered them home to Northampton at about midnight. The car is at a garage for repair and we hope to see them on the road again soon. Other photos are available on website and Shutterfly.
