Editorial For Round 18

Turvey Park's topsy turvy season continues to baffle pundits as the Bulldogs cling to their finals chances with only two Mercantile Mutual Riverina Football League rounds remaining before the play-offs. The Bulldogs may be experiencing one of their worst seasons in the past decade but there is no writing them off just yet.

And should the Dogs clinch fifth spot from other contenders Narrandera and Temora there's no telling what might happen com~ finals time. Turvey Park are finals specialists and that experience will be invaluable should the Dogs secure a finals berth. Their crunch game is against Narrandera at Narrandera Sportsground this Saturday. Victory is vital for both teams, not that any side could ever afford to be beaten in a season as close as this one.

All that seems certain at this late stage of the season is the top three positions - Wagga Tigers, Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong and big imp rovers Collingullie-Ashmont filling those places. The Dogs, Eagles and Roos along with Griffith all face elimination from the finals series should a combination of wins and losses in the last two games eventuate in these teams' favour of disfavour.

Griffith must get their campaign back on track after losing to Turvey Park last week. The Swans won the first half of the game but a big comeback by the Dogs kept them in the finals race while the Swans will regroup against East Wagga-Kooringal. This is a danger game for the Swans who must be wary of an inconsistent Hawks outfit. The Hawks have taken plenty of criticism over recent seasons for their inability to maintain a consistent standard. When the Hawks are hot they could beat any team in the competition but when they're down they struggle in a big way. But this is just the type of game East Wagga is likely to rise to the occasion. Playing in Griffith

won't suit but it's a big chance for the Hawks to prove their nuisance value at an important part of the season for the Swans.

Also capable of playing the menace this weekend will be North Wagga on their home turf against Collingullie-Ashmont. This game should have plenty of feeling as a number of former North Wagga players, led by Demons' coach Dick Carey, return to the 'north shore' to tackle many of their old team-mates. The Saints would love dearly to hand the red-hot De_mons a real lesson in their return to glory. This should be an interesting result.

Temora, too, should be warned from being too complacent against MCU after the roos' less than impressive win against LeetonWhitton last week. Taking nothing away from the winless Crows who played one of their better game_s, Temora did expect to win by a bigger margin than 28 points in the search for percentage at a crucial stage of the season. Temora will want to rectify that against the Goannas but there can be no certainty against the former Farrer League superpower. The Goannas have struggled again this season but are far from easybeats in a competition that has shown competitiveness and high standard this year.

In other games this weekend, competition leaders Wagga Tigers take on Coolamon in Wagga while GGGM plays Leeton-Whitton at Ganmain · games the respective top teams would expect to win well. Collingullie's Barry Mclachlan bagged his 100th goal for the season with eight six-pointers against Narrandera last week, bringing his total to 102 for the season so far. It was the first time a century of goals had been kicked in the senior grade since Wayne Carroll's ton in 1991. Narrandera's Jeremy Bourke needs 16 goals In the last two games to notch this century.

I'm sure we can all be excused for focusing on the Firsts win against Griffith. They went into Sundays clash as underDOGS, but with a glimmer of hope for a finals appearance. It was a great

display and has provided the springboard for a victory today to ensure our proud record of finals appearances is maintained.

To hold Griffith to 1 goal after half time was a great effort. Vags received the Workforce on Tap award following a good performance. Craig (Spanner) Spencer the Mug and Cameron Mooney, who hardly needs it, the Salon on Morgan award. Syksy, Brett and the whole dam lot of you were terrific.

Against a top placed Griffith seconds team the boys (some aren't' that young) really put it to them in trying conditions. If only the kicking was a bit straighter. Nathan Lieschke the Mug, Bobby Hart the Workforce on Tap and Gary (Tank) Sheppard the Car Wash.

The U 1 B's scored a big win and could be credited with setting the scene for the day. The return of Donno proved a winner but before he backed up in the twos he was awarded the dinner. Darren Bowden the Video Ezy and Joel Lieschke the socks.

Those who came to see the fairer sex strut their stuff would have been disappointed as the games were cancelled and who would blame them. The last two matches will see them fine tune for the finals.

Enjoy the Ball even more tonight after a win today.

What a cold and wet day of football with the Seniors and Juniors both playing at the same ground, not that we came home with any wins. The Seniors had their same start - like a house on fire for the first 15 minutes , then we drift back to our same

old story of catch up football. Last week the boys really had a dig and fought hard all day. No awards .

Reserve Grade got to a slow start and let Coolamon run away with the game in the first half. Alter that we started to play football and pretty well kept Coolamon scoreless. If we put 4 quarters of football together we could keep with any side. Palm & Pawn award went to Andrew Fitzgerald. Thomas Blarney went to Nathan Garrod, Coaches award to Adrian George, K&J Trophies went to Nigel McKellar.

The U18s played catch up football, playing 2 quarters out of 4. Let's put our minds back on the job and get that team work going again. K&J Trophies and Palm & Pawn award went to Geoff Phieffer, Crampton St award went to Ian Robertson, Bob for the Job award went to Chris Dunn. Fife Air & Electrical award went to Steve Nicholls .

The netballers came home with 3 wins well done girls. C Grade Mug went to Su~mer Edwards, Pizza Haven award went to Nancy Brown . B Grade Mug went to Summer Edwards and A Grade mug to Shonna Carroll Palm & Pawn dinner to Emma Boynton. '

Belated birthday wishes to Baz who turned 50(?). Bad Taste Night on after the Collingullie game at the North Wagga Public Hall, 8 pm. Team photos are back, $5 each please, see Bob to get yours. Presentation Night and B&F vote count on 28 September, Keep in mind. If anyone is interested in the League Vote count and Presentation night please see Bob.

Well he done it, Baz kicked his 100th goal , well done, a great effort. Good wins were recorded in the Under 18's and the Firsts and the wheels fell off our Reserves with two of our boys carted off to hospital. In our Ones a great team effort from

20 players, Barry Mclachlan took out the Mug and Dinner for Two at the Tolland Hotel with his 8 goal effort. Laurie Andrews the John Waring Endeavour award , Brett Page the R.H. Blake award and the Coaches award to Brad Burkinshaw.

The Reserves Mug went to Joel (Mighty Mouse) Mellen, Rob Meyers the Dinner for Two at the Ashmont Inn and Clint Hansell the Salon 212 haircut and the Coaches award. In the 18's Alan Hopkins won the Ashmont Female Staff award towel , Shawn Grentell got the Silvalite award, the Video Ezy award to Dane Somerville and the Coaches award to Hamish McLeod. The Berrigans Special award went to Barry Mclachlan on 33 points .

In the netball both grades went down with . the A Grade Mug to Jodie Carey and the B

Grade Mug to Kylee Ashby. This week sees out last away game for 1996 when we visit North Wagga. We also have another milestone in the club with Scott Gunning playing his 200th game, well done Scotty.

Our club would also like to wish Elaine Smith a speedy recovery and hope she is back home real soon. Let's all have a deep dig today and come home with 12 points. Great news about Josh Davis, he is the only NSW School boy to make the All Australian Team, well done Josh.

P.S. Apparently we had five generations of Kay Morrows family present at the Crossroads last week. Kay's grandmother, mother, Kay, Kay's daughter and grandaughter. If anyone else has a special day coming up (anniversary, birthday etc) let me know and I would only be too happy to put it in our notes.

The long trip to Leeton last week brought some marvellous weather (not) and mixed results for the 'Roos.

The U18's received another shellacking but several players can still hold their heads high.

Hard working Kevin Drum continue his good year with the Players Player, Steve Drum won the sumptuous feast from the Waratah while the Socks went to the ever-improving Sheeds. Keep plugging away boys.

The 2nds scored a 1 0 point victory in a crowd pleasing affair which was highlighted by the appearance of veterans, Hawk Reid, John McRae and Ronny Lowes. Festy won the Players Player with an "Energetic" effort, boosted by certain performance enhancing fluids. Chris Schmidt was the lucky Sunday night Mug winner, Hawk showed he has lost none of the skills (and very little fitness) in winning the Wesly award while Rod Reid took home the Cooper & Deal socks.

With all due respect to the players involved, the First Grade game would have fair dinkum put the world'3 worst insomniac to sleep. Absolve from blame is Wayne Mclennon, whose skills shone like a big bright shiny thing as he took out the Players Player award. Others to rise above the general standard included Lesley Thompson, who knocked up getting kicks, Tim Byrnes and "Fabio" Morton, who continues to impress despite his hair getting in his eyes.

Please don't forget to support the Karaoke night which is on at the Wesly tonight. Meals will be available at a reasonable price and apparently Maxy Cole has promised a rendition of "You Don't Call Wagga Wagga, Wagga". If you need any more incentive than that you're very hard to please.

Today we face Mango our old foes from the Farrer League days.

Nothing less than a big win is enough so lets make sure we get one.

We may have lost all three grades on Saturday, but they weren't walk overs as many would expect. All the teams could walk away with their heads held high.

Our 18s started the ball rolling with a game effort against the Tigers. Some pretty ordinary goal kicking didn't help the cause much. Three votes and Pizza Hut award went to Matty Paul who's had a terrific year, while Tristan 'Tricia' McMicking received the Video Ezy award and two votes.

The 2nds found it pretty tough against a very good Tigers side, but to their credit they never gave in. Three votes & Sportsman's Hotel award to Brian 'Love is in the Air' McRae. Kable Tye got the 2 votes and South Wagga Butchery award .. One vote and the Wagga Fruit Market award went to Peter 'Lugger' Byrnes, who was a dominant player.

Our 1 sts gave the Tigers one hell of a shock by only being down by 19 points at three quarter time. Just shows that the boys can match it with anyone in the league. Three votes and the Astor award to Anthony 'the bubbles going to burst' Armstrong. 2 votes and the Tuckwells award to Rob Manual with Dan 'jigga jigga' Galvin getting the Rupunzels Haircut and one vote.

The netballers didn't have much luck neither, going down in all three grades. C Grade mug winner 'Melon' Moore with Anne Phyland taking out the B Grade mug and Anike Jones the A Grade mug.

For those who turned up on Saturday night saw the Slaves go through their motions. Big thanks to Poddy, Robbo, Court, Tim, Mick Nath, Ryan & Wayno for keeping the crowd happy.

Vote Count will be held at the clubrooms on Sunday (Sept 1) with a family day. Presentation Night will be Friday 20 Sept. at the clubrooms, 6.30 pm.

Today we head to Temora and with our form of the last couple of weeks, anything could happen!

A cold and dismal day at Maher Oval produced the wrong result for the seniors after a good start. Undisciplined play let Turvey back into the game and

Whne,AedV from then on we didn't give a whimper. Things must change

as that sort of effort is not good enough. We all want the pats on the back when things are going well , so how about taking the responsibility when things are not. Stand up and be counted today and make sure we consolidate our spot in the five.

The senior awards were $100 to Tony "The Pocket Dynamo" Butcher, $50 to Matthew "Dougy" Olney, $30 to Dean ''l'ts been 12 months now" Jamieson, and $20 to Matthew "Who's driving tonight" Bunn . The players player award was convincingly won by Tim "Barge" Fraser. Congratulations also go to Tim Fraser and Joe Agnesta on playing their 50th senior games against Turvey Park.

The 2nds were made to work hard to get the 4 points and secure the minor premiership. Well done boys on this achievement. Let's make sure we keep on going. The awards were $30 to Glen "Club 58" Smith, $20 Greg "He with the biggest watch band in the club" Dreyer and the $1 O to Brett "What night is training this week" McAlister. The players player award was won by Adam "The Astronaut" Baulch and the Mugs Mug was won by David "Mr Mom" Gee.

The U1 S's battled away against a bigger and stronger Turvey side for little result. Keep going guys . The best players were Stuart Davies, Rodney Duncan, Paul Hunt, Stephen

What a let down, after a big build up all week and the 18's and Two's winning then splat.

The Seconds finally started off with plenty of endeavour but ended up as flat as a tack. The Breusts Pewter and Cornell

Petrol award was won by Nathan East. Darren Cuthbert played his normal good game to grab the Carlovers award and the Civic Video was won by Paul Morphett.

The 18's couldn't kick a goal if the . . . The McDonalds & Incenti ve award to Clint Campbell. The Argweld socks were won by Shane Parr and the Coke six pack went to B.Plum.

The First 18 were bloody disgraceful , Mark O 'Leary won the cen tre duels , worked tirelessly around the ground to win the Breusts Pewter and William Farrer dinner, Brian Hawke took the Eagle Boys Pizza and Barry Suckling won the Civic Video .

The netball girls didn 't have a close game anywhere with A and C Grade winning convincing ly to cement their places in the finals , while B and the juniors lost. The only award I know of is C Grade mug was won by Jean Gorham, this I know because Jean was waving it around in front of me as she was falling over drunk (only joking Jean).

The Tee Dee's Haircut "Hawk of the Day" this week was won by someone, can't remember who. Everyone who went to the Ball had a great time, the only ones who didn't were those that were too drunk to remember they were having a good time.

The trip over to Griffith this week, vital for the Two's to show they are a genuine force for the One's and the 18's to add a little respect and the netball girls to keep the good form approachi ng the finals. Up the festinating Hawks.

With all players contributing we had an easy win over the East Wagga Hawks. Luke Carroll won the Sports Club award, Jason McPherson prepared for his 21st Birthday party with nine goals and Nicholas Carroll won the socks.

Miltons Gear voting went the same, (3) Luke, {2) Jason and (1) Nicholas. Judging by the video at Jason McPhersons 21st we were lucky not to lose the 'raging bull' Anthony Carroll to the Australian Rugby League team a few years ago. Nicholas Carroll also performed well in the mike and could have a future in public speaking .

The 2nds only played the last 1 1 /2 quarters and now have a battle on their hands to get back in the finals. Mark Carroll won the Bowling Club award , Dennis Walsh the Ganmain Store towel and the socks went to Brett Lenon. Nadines Dinner for Two went to Wayne Cox.

The U18s went down, but put up a much better performance than in previous weeks. Steve Ruskin won the Club towel , Drew Symons the four Hotels award and Shane Ha

An average day in netball against the Hawks with both A & C Grades losing. A Grade demonstrated a hint of talent, whereas C Grade were outdone by the umpire. Juniors & B Grade continued on their winning way with B Grade winning by almost 80 goals. The awards this week went to Jo Driscoll in C Grade who is having a good year. Briony Crozier in B Grade, assured us all she would make good use of it. Sonya 'cowgirl' Carroll won it in A Grade.

Congratulations to our mighty little U 11 s for winning their Grand Final at Griffith last Saturday. Believe the Coach only just made it in time after doing a bit of a double trip . Congratulations to the Schoolboys on a very successful vote count and presentation day last Sunday. Also congrats to the award winners: Under 1 S's B&F Gavin Lenon, R/Up Courtney Sullivan, B&F finals G.Lenon, U13s B&F Adam Bensch, R/Up Paul Hamblin, U11s B&F Cameron Steward, R/Up Mitchell Steele, B&F finals Mitchel Carroll.

Silver Circle draws 13 & 14 - (276) Max Croker, (379) Peter Bloomfield, (266) Nicole Fish, (268) Pat Logan, (219) Fred Hillier, (314) Nadine and Vikki .

This week we host the Leeton-Whitton Crows, so let's not have too much show on Saturday and continue on our winning way. Remember players it's white shorts.

Major sponsors - Wade Sports Club, Davis Sanders Homes, Golden Apple Superstore. ■ SOCIAL-After the last game of the season against Mango

Navy~.Red&Goij Hoops we will be having our Vote Count night, should be a great

night at the Wade Sports Club. RAFFLE -All raffle books need to be in this

week or next so don't forget to sell "them all" and give them to Pat Lyons or Judy McLean.

AUTOPSY - Firsts: Great first half boys and it was just a matter of good defensive work setting up swift and creative attacking football. Temora may say they played below their best but we all know that we didn't allow them to play well and it wouldn't of mattered which team fronted us on David Sanders Oval last week they would have had a game on their hands.

2nds: Let a great opportunity slip against a patched up but experienced Roo outfit. I really didn't think we had such a bad team. Training, training and more training is the only answer.

U18s: A goal blitz in the first quarter and then a steady trickle from then on gave the Crowlettes a comfortable win in slippery conditions. Award winners were hard to pick but Bullys three goals in the first quarter were inspirational, but for a split second there I thought he was going to recover the ball and then proceed to run it into the Central Umpire.

Netball: Let's play Temora on Sunday all the time. In the upset of the season our A Graders may have cemented themselves to the top five with a convincing win, and B Grade bolstered their chances as well with a stirring victory, while our young C Grade narrowly went down in a thriller.

Milestones: now here is one hell of an achievement, Peter (come lately) Wornes played his 50th Reserve Grade game last week, well done Pete. But out of curiosity we tallied up all the quarters that he played and it came to a total of 15 games, not even a full season of footy in how many years. At this rate he really won't reach his 50th until the year 2001 .

Congrats - and commiserations to our U 11 s

It's hard to fathom why MCU haven't won more games after observing their Tiger-like display last week. Our boys certainly didn't play like they know how -I'm sure they all realise that and will be out to produce their best

in the run to the finals. What a superb display by Terry, particularly when it mattered in the final term. Flex - Ray Colvin was again a full 4 quarter contributor and was rewarded with the Wagga Motors award. The Walker Chemical awards went to the man who just loves washing his car - Steve Schultz. The Birdnest award to "That Man" - "Moves faster than the speed of sound" Gerald Pieper. He must have more chickens & towels & fuel than anybody! Jason Morton had his first full game in 1sts & came through with flying colours. The 4 points were what was needed - it just didn't look the prettiest getting them!

The two's continued to put it together with a big win. A shame M. Barber had to pull out -it would have been bigger! Damien Parcell had a top game and finished with the Warehouse award, The Nationwide Towel went to Clay Barber - welcome back Clay. Glen Medau, again a great effort, the Carlovers award ..

The 18's are workng into excellent from for the finals. They were well served by Clinton Hanckel - The Lowry & Howick, Stephen Bromham and Shane Atkinson the 2nd & 3rd Lowry & Howick awards.

Congratulations to Tony Power on his state Under 16 selection recently. Today - it's the Coolamon Hoppers - Let's give them a Tiger Licken'.

Well the finals are here and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all teams that made the Farrer League finals, and good luck to all RFL teams vying for a final berth.

Congratulations to our members on a good all round effort throughout the year, although numbers at training must pick up to keep our perfornances at a high.

Drinks this week are at the Home Tavern. The Presentation Night is on Friday, September 20 at the Rules Club , so everyone be there for a great night.

Good luck to all umpires and boundaries in their games this weekend .

Farrer League Preview (cont. from pag-3 30)

Robbie Schnoegl (again, if fit) Ian Ross and Shane Brown, young League representative, Steve Marston and along with the flashy John West and improving youngsters, Mark Chaplin and Leigh Collins, wont let the Blues have it all their own way.

The capability of the Magpies to lift in the finals, coupled with their winning record over the Blues this season tempt me to go for TRYC to win this elimination game, but I'll be brave and tip the Blues, whose coach, Matt Conway, I believe has something "up his sleeve", and will produce it today to see his charges progress to the preliminary final.

In the Reserves curtain-raiser, the Magpies are again involved, their opponent being reigning premier, Marrar. On both occasions that they met during the season, Marrar have recorded comfortable wins, beating TRYC by 32 points at The Rock on June 1 and then again at Marrar on August 10, by 27 points. But, then as Marrar proved last year, past records count naught when it comes to finals. Despite that, I do think the Bombers will, once again, be too good for the Magpies, with players to watch being Simon Crouch, Richard Nottle, John McCormack, John Carroll, David Chamberlain and the Hindmarsh boys, Paul and Greg, for Marrar, and Dale Gowland, John Taber, Shayne White, Phillip Walsh and veterans, Richard Flanigan and Chris Grentell for the

RULE OF THE WEEK. Ball Possession. A player may hold the ball for any length of

time provided he is not held by an opponent. If he runs with the ball he must bounce it

or touch it on the ground at least once within every 15 metres from the commencement of his run, whether running in a straight line or turning and dodging.

If a player with the ball bounces it, he is deemed to be in possession of the ball.

If he runs with the ball and handballs it over an opponent's head and catches it, he must, within 15 metres of commencing his run or striking the ball on the ground, bounce it or touch the ground with it or dispose of the ball.

A players who lies on or over the ball is deemed to be in possession of the ball.

FARRER LEAGUE ~

€-eit~ria~ Spring is not far off. .. the days are

lengthening, the weather's hopefully on the improve, and, to a footballer, that's a sign of "finals time". Finals ... the business end of the season; the very goal that most coaches and their charges set themselves at the start of the season . Finals ... a whole new ball game; a time when players are even more desperate; when the pressure increases, because the stakes are higher.

Four clubs, only, made it to this year's finals series: Ariah Park-Mirrool, Marrar, The RockYerong Creek and Cootamundra. Ariah ParkMirrool has taken Ardlethan's place in the Seniors and Cootamundra, South WaggaTolland's place in the Reserves, to give that little difference from last year's finals series. However, the makeup of the top fours is quite different from last season.

True, for the second consecutive year, Marrar is the Senior competition's minor premier. But, this season, they've been beaten by both APM and Cootamundra, as opposed to last season.when they went through undefeated. APM shot up three positions from last year's final ladder, to end up second, whilst TRYC dropped from last year's second to third and Cootamundra remains fourth, but is quietly confident of progressing further this year.

In the Reserves, APM, third last year, failed

at last week's last hurdle to be the second consecutive Reserves' team to go through the competition season without loss (TRYC did it last year). Such wasn't to be, though, with last year's fifth-placed Reserves' team, Cootamundra, remaining at second position after beating APM last Saturday. Those two, APM and Cootamundra, will meet in next Saturday's second semi-finals at Ardlethan, whilst last year's grand finalists, TRYC and Marrar meet in today's first semi-final. In the Seniors, of course, it's TRYC versus Cootamundra. The venue is Kapooka ... a first for a Farrer League finals match.

Last Sunday night, the Annual Presentation Dinner of the League was staged at the Rules Club and 'The Record' wishes to congratulate the respective grades' Best and Fairest players, Clear Medal winner, Glen Treacy from Ari ah Park-Mirrool and Allan Carroll Memorial Medalist, Peter McCabe, also from Ari ah ParkMirrool. Congratulations are also extended to the leading goalkickers, John Read, of Cootamundra and Richard Flanigan, of TRYC on winning the Urquhart and K&J Trophies awards, respectively, and to the Champion Club, Ariah Park-Mirrool. A popular segment of the evening was the crowning of Miss Farrer League for 1996, Tanya Eckermann from TRYC. All ten young ladies are to be congratulated for representing their clubs with distinction.

So, back to today's games, in which, both Seniors and Reserves, the fourth-placed teams, Cootamundra and TRYC, respectively, have not beaten their opponents, TRYC and Marrar, this year. Can they do it in a finals match!?!? Let the siren sound ...

FARRER LEAGUE FIRST SEMI-FINAL PREVIEW by "Jock"Currie

When The Rock-Yerong Creek and Cootamundra last met in a finals match, Don Oliver had never been heard of at Cootamundra, Lewis Winter had just become a teenager, Brent Milthorpe went to the footy to watch Dad play and Steve Marston had just started kindergarten.

Fourteen years down the track, those four footballers will be key players in today's historic first semi-final, between the Magpies and the Blues, being played at Kapooka. Oliver and Winter, their club's Best and Fairest players this year, and Milthorpe and Marston two of their team's most promising younger players. It was in the Riverina District League's elimination semi-final of 1982 , that the only previous finals' encounter between these two clubs was played, with the fifth-placed TRYC defeating fourth finishing Cootamundra, 22-13 to 17-10. It was the year that current Cootamundra secretary, Rod Knagge was his Club's Reserve Grade best and fairest, and current Cootamundra player, Anthony Cummins was Junee-Kapooka's Best and Fairest player. Enough of distant history.

More recently, these two teams have met twice this year in the home-and-away series of matches, with TRYC winning narrowly on both occasions. On May 18, at The Rock, the Magpies, four points down at three-quarter time, kicked 4-6 to 3-1 in the final term to defeat the Blues by seven points. In the return match on July 27, at Cootamundra, TRYC led all day, but a last term, in which Cootamundra booted 5-3 to 1·1, saw the Magpies' winning margin only six points. So, whilst TRYC have won both games, there certainly hasn't been much in them, and Cootamundra. after their great ettort last week in defeating A1iah Park-Mirrool, must consider themselves every chance of winning today's match.

Both teams have key players whose performances today could sway the result in their team's way. The RockYerong Creek will be hoping that coach, Greg Brain, best and fairest winner. Lewis Winter. centreman, Paul Noack, centre half forward, Graham Fellows and full forward, Jason Brown all fire, thus inspiring their less-heralded team mates to big performances. Likewise, in the Cootamundra camp. supporters will be hoping that coach,

finished we had a couple of vote counts to finish the weekend off. In our B & F Lewis polled 104 to beat Feathers on 80. Doc

Blo::k&Whdestripes Gowland polled 15 to beat Whitey on 9 in the 2nds. Well

done to Lewis for coming second in the League B&F. The big news of the night was the reappointment of Greg Brain as Coach and Lewis Winter as assistant coach for 1997.

The Club is very happy indeed to have both back on board and we hope all others will remain. There were three other notable victories last weekend. Firstly the B Grade netballers who disposed of a couple of A Graders as well. Secondly Dick Flanigan winning the 2nd Grade League goalkicking with 84 majors. Great effort Dick after missing about five games. Thirdly Tanya winning the Farrer Princess on Sunday night. I said you would kill 'em and you did. The Club thanks you and congratulates you for highlighting the poise and beauty in the Club.

The First awards last week went like: The Rock Butchery Mug to Greg Brain, the RAFC award to Paul Noack, the Riverina Spraying Service towel to Jason Brown, the Thomas Blarney voucher to Steve Marston. $50 - Dale Gowland, $30 - Mathew Collins, $20 - Matty Gale. The KOH Dinner went to Dale Gowland.

The 2nds awards - Libbys Takeaway Mug - Dick Flanigan, the Porky and Verda Mug -Paul Hallam, $1 O each to John Taber and Scott Brown. The KOH Dinner went to Mick Williams.

A Grade netball went down by 3 with Katie Burkinshaw winning the Mug. The B Grade won, as already mentioned, with Emma Mclachlan winning the Mug. Their B&F was very close with Katie Burkinshaw winning the A Grade by 1 vote from Gin Auld and Simone Loutitt the B Grade. Well done girls.

Well today brings the first of what we trust will be three finals for both teams. There is no need to harp on what is required because everyone is well aware of that. All we need is commitment, courage and desperation in both grades and we will come away with two victories . All the best boys.

UP THE HOT PIES.

■ Just the finals build up we

were looking for against Ariah Park last weekend with both grades recording inspired wins. Phil Guthrie , Mark Schmidt,

Navy Btue, White motif Don Oliver and Brent Milthorpe

were the standouts in Seniors and in Reserve Grade Paul Delaney was fantastic and was well supported by Jeremy Roberts. Justyn Smith, Wayne DeBritt and David Earnshaw. The Netballers also had a big day taking out B Grade and performing well in A Grade to go down narrowly to finish the year on a good note.

Congratulations to Don in taking out the Club Senior Best & Fairest for the 3rd time and to Pete Hoey for his second title in Reserves. Also to John Read who has of course taken out both the League and Club Goalkicking and to Ariah Parks Glen Treacy who was a very deserving winner of the League Medal .

Bookings are open at Rudds for Presentation night on the 21st of September. Numbers are required for catering so please book early. Today is a big day for Matt and the Seniors against the Rock and we wish them all the best and tonight hopefully a big one at the Olympic.

MARRAR CLUB NOTES Congratulations to Melinda Roth for her

participation in the Farrer Princess Competition. Top of the ladder in the Ones and third in the Magoos is a terrific result with both the A and B grades making the four in the netball . Who knows this year it might be four out of four.

The Magoos really got into top gear to grab that second spot but the Blues would not give up the four points. Today we will see a continuation of great play to eliminate the Magpies from the race for the flag. Award winners were - Hindi (Paul), The Fly, Darren and Scratcher.

The Ones will enjoy the weeks rest before tackling the Brown Bombers. C.B scooped the pool with the mug and the top dollars. Wes, Frank and Brendan split up the balance of the till.

Make an extra effort to call in and watch the boys at training over the next couple of weeks.

Ariah Park-Mirrool Club Notes

The Farrer Football League conducted their annual vote count on Sunday night at the R.A.R.F.C. It was well attended by our club and from all reports a good night was had by all. The A.P.M.F.C ended up having a very successful night, firstly taking out the club championship then winning the first grade best and fairest with Glen Treacy receiving 26 votes to take out the Clear Medal. A rare double was achieved when Peter McCabe won the Allan Carroll Medal for the best and fairest player in reserve grade. Congratulations to both players on a very successful year.

Well it wasn't the result we would have liked at Cootamundra last week. Only one win for the day that being the A grade netball girls. The first grade footballers suffered a big loss to Coota going down 27-19-181 to APM 17-16-118. Good players were probably hard to find, but some players performed well. The Bowling Club award went to Grant Ryan who is quickly returning to his best. The towel award went to the young players, Ben Peacock and the Ariah Park Sales & Service award to Ian "Crack" Gordon.

The 2nds suffered their first loss of the year going down by 3 points. Glen "Chad" O'Brien took out both the pewter and the sports massage awards with a great game at full forward. The Bowling Club award went to Alan Ball, the towel went to Cameron Furphy and the socks to Matthew O'Dwyer.

The netball girls almost won both grades with B grade just going down by 1 point, Coota 31 to APM 30, the award from that game going to Felicity Gordon. The A grade girls won 50 to 43 with the award going to Suzanne Fairman and the towel to Paula O'Dwyer. We now need a lot of hard work from everyone to gain entry into the grand final.

Let's do it Brown Bombers. Don't forget our vote count at the Hall

and 13's on their Grand Final appearance last weekend, so close and yet so far. From what I can gather the parents enjoyed the day more than the kids.

Don't forget to head back to the Wade Sports Club tonight.

Farrer Preview (continued from page 23)

Matt Conway, best and fairest, the evergreen Don Oliver, "gun" forwards, Phil Guthrie and John Read and, if available, champion ruckman, Danny Jaques, can show the way for the Blues.

Despite TRY C's apparent liking of young League rep Steve Marston playing at CHS, I wouldn't be surprised to see either of Graham Fellows or, more likely, Lewis Winter line up in the key defence position, in order to nullify the effectiveness of Cootamundra's Phil Guthrie. Compared to last season, perhaps Guthrie's form has not been as outstanding, but he hit his straps in last week's match and his super marking strength, deceptive pace and long goal kicking prowess will have to be closely monitored. To my mind, Winter is just the man to do this for the Magpies. Winter reads the play well, himself marks strongly and makes every kick count. Often they're long kicks well into the forward line.

At the opposite end of the ground the likable Don Oliver, as evident by his best and fairest win, is still playing top football, and his clash with likely TRYC centre half forward, Graham "Barney" Fellows should be one of the features of the match. Oliver will have a slight height advantage over Fellows ... both are good marks, and perhaps the younger Fellows will have too much pace for the defender. But experience is a huge factor in finals football, and Oliver has an abundance of this!

With injuries causing Blues selectors to play a variety of centremen, it wouldn't surprise to see the opposing captain-coaches, the Magpies' Greg Brain (this week, reappointed for next season) and the Blues' Matt Conway, line up in the middle. The two are players of contrasting styles, with Brain playing the position more like a rover, and the taller Conway, like a ruck-rover. Brain would cover more territory, whilst Conway would pick up more than his share of possessions staying at home. Or, indeed, the Magpies brainstrust may persist with potential matchwinning centreman, Paul Noack, in the pivot. A harder footballer is difficult to find in this League ... he let's nothing or no-one come between him and the ball in his endeavours to win the footy. Conway has had an excellent first year at the helm and is eager to take the Blues beyond the fourth-placing of last season. He brought with him from Canberra, one of the best forwards

Farrer League Preview (cont. from page 29)

the League has seen in the past decade, in John Read. This year he continued to break and set records as he kicked on to a tally of 159 goals in the home-and-away series. He is a fine mark, and a most accurate kick, but, would you believe in the two games against The Rock he has kicked a meagre total of only threei He will be desperate to show that he can kick goals against the better teams, as well as the not so goods.

for the Magpies, and if Brown (Lee) can find the finals form he displayed with MCU on more than the odd occasion and Brown (Jason) can continue to kick goals, those two players will be decided assets to their team's cause.

The ruck contests should also prove worth watching, especially if Danny Jaques is available. Although lacking match practice, it shouldn't take long for the big fellow to find his stride, and the RFL experience he picked up with the premiership-winning Wagga Tigers last year will prove invaluable. His opponent is the Magpie workhorse, the under-rated Marcus Kreutzberger, who often concedes centimetres, but at the end of the day has been credited with more than his share of hitouts and strong play around the ground. Jason Brown (early in the season) and Lee Brown (later) have been handy pickups during the year,

Cootamundra's roving duo, the master, Greg Bennett, and his apprentice, Brent Milthorpe, are on a par with the Magpie pair of Greg Brain and Wayne "Jimmy'' Jones. B_ennett has played some top games this season, belying his veteran category and has been particularly handy near goals. In the last four matches he has snared 16, including five when they last met TRYC. Around the ground, the Blues will be well-served by perennial finals players , such as David Harris, Mark Douglas, Mark Annetts and more-than-handy footballers in Gerard Guthrie , Mark Schmidt and yet another Mark, Mark Pitchford. (Does that make them a good Marking team???). Of course, the Magpies, too, have some seasoned players, such as Col and David (if fit) Carroll,
