PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the Sharks 2004 Annual Report. Sadly I regret to inform you that this year we have to farewell Myrna Bosio who was granted life membership in 1998. I had the pleasure of working with Myrna in 2002 when she took on the role of Asst Treas & Sec. Even though she was extremely ill she still managed to make her delicious signature corned beef and salad sandwiches at the Veterans Carnival for the Laurie Packham Golden Jubilee in 2003. I also remember playing goalie with Myrna for the Masters in 1985 when Isabella Calder prematurely left us that year. Four and a half years ago Myrna was diagnosed with cancer which she fought with her dogged courage and determination that we had often observed on the hockey field. Thus this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson typifies the spirit that Myrna has left behind. "What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters when compared to what lies within us." Since I have been President the PL have finished as Premiers, third and runners up but this year it was not to be. However this setback is really just a challenge to test the character of the player group and to toughen their resolve for the hard battles they will face in the future. Encouraging signs are emerging that the players are responding and finding those reserves of inner strength. For example the U17 Sharks won the Regional Championship for 2004. Congratulations to Dave Mellor who was coach of that team of very talented hockey players. SP depth can also be found within this group of players from SL4 who won back to back premierships and who were also minor premiers this year. This consistently successful team was also promoted to SL3 which is the first time this has happened during my tenure at the club. Although many have contributed to the success enjoyed by SL4 I would like to make special mention of their player coach Ann Prior. Only an extraordinary individual has the capacity to combine the dual role of setting an example on the field as well as the demanding vocation of assessing the pulse of the game as a coach. Members of this team also play for the V2 who are clearly on top of their division, winning the May Campbell Minor Premiers flag and Premiership pennant. The onfield success that has been achieved is only possible with the support of our sponsors and encouragement of my Executive Committee off the field. Asst Treasurer & Secretary Liz Hansen-surely the most effervescent and social member of the club. Secretary Noelleen Gardner-you are a true example of the expression "If you want something done, give it to a busy person." Vice President Amy Scolleen-sooo glad to see that you decided to stay after all and continue to grace us with your presence. Vice President Cathy Hewett-the quiet achiever who has given me unwavering support over the last three years. I will miss your hard working contribution and cheerful demeanour next year. Treasurer Kerry Chapman-another trusted and loyal friend with whom I have enjoyed many a long night crunching budget figures! NOT! Your wise counsel and practical solutions to club conundrums has been wonderful over the past two years.

Ladies, your inner beauty and majestic strength has helped me to endure the difficult periods I have had to face this year. I thank you most sincerely for your support and look forward to continuing our rewarding work together for 2005 as we welcome new executive members to start a new era in our club. Also working hard behind the scenes this year has been the Junior Committee, many thanks to Ian Dawes the Coordinator, and the Social Committee, Julie Blythe Convenor has done a great job. I look forward to her minutes after every Thursday evening's meeting with her detailed description of all the fun and entertainment she has planned for the club members. Once again I can only conclude that it has been a pleasure and privilege to serve such a fantastic hockey club. I acknowledge the trust you have placed in me and I will always endeavour to place the interests of SPWHC above all else. Unity is Strength. Report composed by Kay Lee President

JUNIOR COMMITTEE REPORT As with the last couple of years, South Perth fielded six teams in the girls' division this year. Although initial registrations were quite healthy, the club did struggle to fill some teams on a weekly basis. This was particularly the case with the Under 15s and from time to time in the Under 17Bs. Shortages of players in some age groups did fluctuate from week to week and it was often the case that girls from younger age groups were asked to step-up and cover for absent team members. Whilst this exposure to higher age groups can benefit some of the younger girls, it is important for the success of the teams and the club that shortages in the various age levels is avoided. This is not to suggest that younger girls should be discouraged from playing in higher age groups but rather that the club needs to attract increased numbers of junior players to the club. To this end, the Junior Committee will look at ways of increasing the profile of the Club in the South Perth extended region. Primarily this will be done by promoting SPWHC in 2005 as an excellent club where girls receive first class coaching and have fun playing the game of hockey. Initially this will involve promoting the club at schools and encouraging existing players to promote the club to any friends who may be interested in playing hockey. The Junior Committee would also welcome the support of any parents or senior club members interested in helping out with promotional activities and coaching in the 2005 season. It was a mixed year in terms of where teams finished on the ladder, but a very successful year in terms of girls enjoying their hockey. There is no doubt that success brings its own rewards but it is equally important that girls are encouraged to participate and play sport. In the role of Junior Coordinator, I tried to attend as many games as possible and the games that I did get to see it was quite evident that not only were girls enjoying playing the game but were also learning and refining their skills. The credit for this must go to the coaches who willingly give their time to teach and mentor the girls in the game of hockey. It is vitally important that the club has excellent junior

coaches and despite perhaps only limited success through the year, the SPWHC coaches approach their role with the long-term future of the girls in mind. A junior sport success fluctuates from year to year and all of the coaches believe that the teams will have a terrific 2005 season. As for the 2004 season, the Under 11B side finished third on the ladder after just failing to make the grand final. Their semi-final draw against Riverside Lions was not quite enough to get them in to the final as Lions finished above them on the ladder. But it was still a very successful year under the guidance of Rachel Puddey and Amee Bosenberg who for the third year in a row did a great job with our youngest players. The priority is certainly on the girls having fun and you only have to attend a game to see just how much fun these young sharks (shark-lets!), have playing hockey. The Under 13A team finished sixth in what is a very strong competition. Whilst UWA and the two Wolves teams dominated the competition, the South Perth girls were far from disgraced. The team was a real mixture with girls from last year’s U13As & Bs, a couple of girls from last year’s U11s and a few new girls to the club. What was also new for the U13As was the coaching. Wendy Quint and Jaks Scott took on co-coaching roles and did a fantastic job not only teaching and refining skills but also teaching the girls tactics and new ways of working as a team. Both Wendy and Jaks have expressed great optimism for the 2005 season and believe that the girls are ready to step up to the next level. This year the Under 15B side, coached by Megan Harrison and Emma Cummuskey. Of all the teams, it was probably this team that struggled for numbers the most. This was reflected in the girl’s ninth position on the ladder with only two wins for the season. However, again it is a credit to the coaches that the girls continued to enjoy their hockey, particularly those girls who turned up every week and gave their all. Travis Mair and Greg O’May co-coached the Under 15A team which included a significant numbers of very talented players. Hockey started early for the girls with a solid pre-season workout that included fitness drills, trial matches and skills work. It would be fair to say, therefore, that the girl’s sixth position finish on the ladder was not a true reflection of the terrific amount of work and commitment shown by the girls throughout the season. This was a case where the competition was not only very strong but also that South Perth girls went through a big learning curve in terms of what was needed to be competitive at this level. The Under 17Bs also had a mixed year with a fifth position on the ladder and just missing out on the finals. This was very disappointing for the girls especially as they could have made the playoffs if OGHMC had not forfeited the last game and therefore denying the girls the opportunity to make the finals. It is also important to note that the girl’s coach - Alisia Harmon - thought that perhaps a few unnecessary soft losses through the season had cost the girls a finals position. One thing for sure about this Under 17Bs team was the great camaraderie demonstrated by all the girls towards each other throughout the season. The girls genuinely enjoyed playing hockey and playing alongside each other and were ably supported by Alisia.

The Under 17As had an outstanding year. The team was runners up in their grade in September losing 0-3 in the Grand Final to NC Raiders. However, earlier in the year the girls won the U17 State Championships with a 2 – 1 victory which was also played against NC Raiders. This was a fitting result for this team that has been playing together for many years. Indeed, for a lot of the girls this is the team that they have played most of their junior hockey with starting with the Under 11s. Not only have the girls played together since their earliest junior days, but also for most of the girls, Dave Mellor has been their coach. Dave has had great success with these girls and has had a big role in developing the girls in to very good players. Hopefully, the girls will stay on to play with SPWHC and have great seasons as senior players. Finally, a big thank you to all the parents for their support without whom we would not have a junior competition. This can also be said about the umpires who take on this task knowing full well that they cannot please all of the players or parents all of the time! We cannot thank you enough for your efforts and yes, you ARE very much appreciated. Thanks also to the other members of the junior committee ---- Julie Miller, Dave Mellor and Liz Hansen ---- and thanks to the members of the senior committee who assisted and guided us during the year. Isolating the results of Round 2 it is evident that the team performed extremely well in the second half of the season, in fact falling 1 point short of being in the Top 4 performing teams in the second round. Further analysing the results of the second round it is also evident that the final ladder standings do not accurately represent the season. Willetton for example finished the season with an outstanding second round of results, adding a respectable 15 points to their season total of 25 points. This performance though STILL did not reward Willetton with a berth in the finals. It is also important to highlight that in the second round South Perth drew with Willetton, and in fact defeated Wolves, who went on to become eventual winners of the Premier League Competition. The Season The 2004 season saw South Perth field a new look squad, and an equally new look off-field team. Overall results were clearly disappointing but it is important to look beyond the final results to see what the season means to the club for the future. Firstly we faced difficulties such as loss of PL players through injuries:

1. Liz Davies (knee) – missed entire season 2. Melissa Hall (knee) – missed 9 games (13 wks out) 3. Nicole Rollason, GK (wrist) - 2 games missed (5 wks out) 4. Tish Ingram (back) - 8 games missed

Typical disruptions occurred during the season as this young, talented team is proudly made up of many State and Junior Australian Players, as listed above. Our National players, Trini Powell (who also battled injury) and Wendy Alcorn were rarely available as it was an Olympic year. From a coach’s perspective, the 2004 season was disappointing when you look at the final result, but enlightening and encouraging when you analyse the processes behind it. An extremely talented, young team represents the club. It boasts potential that should see it yield far more positive results in the future if it is to continue to develop it’s players. It is important the focus remains on basic skills and further development of the players’ understanding of the more technical ideas of positioning, systems and game play. The season offered a similar ride to that of a roller coaster at a show! At times this team demonstrated its potential and outplayed its’ opposition, though the end result did not always reflect this performance. It was frustrating that these performances were NOT consistent. At times the team did not mesh well, overall morale was flat, or individual performances were not up to standard, and the result suffered. It was recognised early in the season that this was happening and many different ideas were tried in order to attempt to lift the team’s performance. A close relationship between the coaches and Gemma Cowen (captain) ensured that the player’s had a part to play in improving the team’s performance. Employing the facilities at Utopian Gym noticeably improved team morale by using weights and circuit training once a week. Another noticeable improvement late in the season came from a team meeting Tate and Melissa called with 4 games to go. It was recognised that although we were not going to achieve a place in the ‘4’ in the 2004 season, we needed to maintain sight of the 2005 season and therefore needed to re-set

Page 13: South Perth Women’s Hockey Club Inc Annual Report 2004members.iinet.net.au/~richardmurphy/SPWHC Annual Report 2004.pdf · South Perth Women’s Hockey Club Inc sponsored by Fearis

team goals with this in mind. Goals such as that we wanted to earn ‘x’ amount of points, win ‘x’ amount of penalty corner attack and concede ‘x’ amount of defensive penalty corners. We also named a small number of team focuses to assist us in achieving our goals. We agreed that it was important that we re-build together and regardless of the final outcome, we would monitor our performance on a weekly basis. As has been recorded and stated earlier in this report, from the final 4 games we earned 8 points (from a possible 12) – an outstanding result. In hindsight perhaps this meeting and consequent re-grouping should have occurred earlier in the second round, but regardless the results were positive and important leading into the 2005 season. It should also be noted that in the final 4 games we chose to invite Jack McMeekin to our trainings and games. We decided a new, yet familiar face may have an impact on the morale of the team. Jack did not coach the team, but rather added extra feedback and encouragement during training. He sat on the bench on game day and in the absence of Tate for 2 matches (due to state coaching commitments), ran the substitutions under the direction of Melissa, and with the assistance of Kristy Warburton. Melissa was Coach, and handled all coaching matters accordingly (i.e. team talks pre-game/half-time, etc). Thank You Thank you to Gemma Cowen (captain) for her commitment to the club and the team. To Kristy Warburton (SL2 coach) for her assistance as manager. Thanks also to Murray Grime, as PL manager. To Kay Lee for her support of the PL Team and leadership of the club, and also to the Executive. Thanks to guest coaches Jack McMeekin, Peter O’Sullivan and Chris Munroe, for their invaluable time, assistance and input. Report composed by Tate Napier Coach

Catherine Charnley Michelle Roberts Jessica Stanley Helen Rose Kristy Warburton Phoebe Thomas Ali Markey Jenna Moore Perin Breakell Ok Nam Park NB – this list does not include PL players who played down in the SL2 team, rather this is the core SL2 team for the 2004 season. Coaches Award Went to Jessica Stanley for her work ethic and attendance at training, sportsmanship and for playing a full 2’s game each weekend and then quite often playing at least half, if not more of a Premier League game each weekend. For her age Jess has an impressive training ethic. Fairest and Best Award Fairest and best for the year (decided by votes from players collected after each game) went to Ok Nam Park. Park was another player who did whatever was requested of her and for the majority of the season played two games per weekend. Her work as a sweeper saved the team many a time and pulled us out of tricky situations. A major highlight I felt was that every player got players votes at some point over the season. State Representatives Congratulations must go to Jessica Stanley for being selected in the Under 18 state team and to Stephanie Andrews for being selected in the WA Under 16 school girls team and the Australian Under 16 Schoolgirls squad. Catherine Charnley was selected as a train on player for the WA Under 16 schoolgirl team as well. Thanks To Tate Napier and Melissa Hall who did all the hard work of conducting training sessions that included the SL2 players each week. As a game day coach I found their support of the team and myself was invaluable over the season and my thanks must go to them for their efforts and enthusiasm throughout the year. A large amount of credit for the development of our younger players is due to the efforts of Tate and Melissa. To Nicole Rollason for managing the team over the season and ensuring things ran smoothly on game day. Thanks to all State League 4 players who assisted us with bench players when required and to Ann Prior for making the process so easy for us. Ann Prior was also very

supportive of the team and made the process of finding reserve players when required so much easier. Finally thanks must go the SPWHC committee for all of their hard work and Kay Lee for all her efforts in keeping us on track and to Tate Napier and Melissa Hall for being an excellent squad coaches. As coach I intentionally focussed more on development and the improvement of the team and skill development of individuals, due to the experience level of the team, as the scores in our game or win/loss record very rarely reflected what had happened on the field. Our first round record was poor but the girls really turned this around in the second round of the season. In several cases we held the top teams in some very close games but would then lose easily to a bottom team. The age and inexperience of the girls really showed at times over the year, but they could not be faulted for their efforts and for their sportsmanship as a team and for their ability to keep getting back up and getting back out there. Although our result of 7th place does not look promising on paper, I feel we have an excellent player base for the premier league squad for next year (particularly with such a young average age of players) and that individual skill levels and game experience of each player has improved over this season, all of which stands us in good stead as a club for the next couple of years to come. The club must continue to focus on nurturing and retaining young players as a considerable age gap exists in the PL team which will impact in the next season or two if not handled correctly. I thoroughly enjoyed coaching such a fantastic bunch of girls. Their attitude and sportsmanship were excellent and I look forward to assisting them to reach their potential as players. STATE LEAGUE 4 TEAM REPORT

“The Sharks Kick Arse 2004!” This was my second year as coach of this group and with a premiership at the end of 2003 the 2004 season was going to be a lot harder. We were still aiming to achieve our objectives of a Challenge Cup, Minor Premiers (Including promotion to State League 3) and a back to back Premiership. We retained the core part of last year’s team and were fortunate enough to add some very good players in Peta Davison, Jaks Scott and Claudie Markey to the group, with Renae Couper & Suzie Stoate also playing a full season. Our season pushed off with a 4-2 win over Fremantle which gave the group a huge belief that this was going to be a very good year. Round 3 bought us crashing back to earth with a 3-1 loss to Raiders. We pushed on and punished the teams we played next scoring an average of 4 goals per game. This also set us up for a birth in the Challenge Cup against Fremantle. Wendy “the seagull” Quint was in early form scoring goals – thanks to all the practice she got over the summer from playing 7s.

Renae Couper took the role of our Penalty Corner hitter and had an immediate impact with her scoring in nearly every game from a direct shot. Claude Markey was starting to play a little more after returning from having her baby Josh and it was around this time that we realised how good Claudie was going to be with us this year. We had to face up to Fremantle for 2 weeks in a row, firstly in our Challenge Cup and then the following week in a normal fixture. Fremantle beat us 2-1 in our Challenge Cup but it was the following week where the 3 points mattered that we turned the tables on them. It was always going to be hard playing each other 2 weeks in a row but the 3 points were always the greater priority. This win put us 5 points clear at the top of our league and in the weeks that followed saw us out by 10 points and in a clear position for promotion to SL3. The midfield of Pete, Jaks, Renae and Claude were well gelled together by now and Sue, Wendy and Chelsea were now making goal scoring a regular habit. Our defence in Nic Holberton, Amy Scollen, Alisia Harmon and Roz Medbury has been solid all year and we very lucky to be able to have a player like Greenie that we can call on when needed. We stumbled slightly with 2 losses to Uni Associates and then Willeton but by this point we were not going to be knocked out of top spot in our league, and with that sorted we could now look forward and focus on the finals. We played Uni Associates in our 2nd Semi Final and won 1-0 with a goal by Sue Stoate and went straight through to our Grand Final. The floodgates really could have opened in this game, however we were a little soft in front of the net and goals went begging. A week off to find out who our opponents would be - and “big Surprise” it was Fremantle yet again. Straight after our final Wednesday training before the grand final – 5 of our team mates won their Vets grand final 4-1 over Raiders. Most of the girls stayed and cheered and we enjoyed their support enormously. Our Grand Final day came around with most players excited about what we were about to do and achieve together. We scored early in the game through a corner variation (No 4 I think?) where Pete Davison deflected a nice little goal to put us up 1-0. Fremantle came back to score a flukey, but nice, goal with about 10 mins before half time. The second half saw us more or less dominate the game, our efforts were rewarded when Renae Couper put away a direct corner hit as we have seen her do so many times this year. 7 minutes remained before time and we ran, fought, tackled and held together, lead by Roz Medbury at the back, Pete Davison in the midfield and Kelly Perry who was alert and made many well time saves in goals. With about 35 seconds to go the “Fat Lady” was on her feet high in the stands preparing to sing, the final score was 2-1 and it was our time to enjoy our very successful year with a “Back to Back Premiership”. Thankyou to Renae Couper as Captain of the team, and to Wendy Quint as Vice Captain you have been a great support to myself and have lead the group very well this year. Many thanks to Joc Henly for all her help on match days and also to Kerry Chapman who has been a great manager this year. To Billy and Helen whose support of our team this year has been a great boost, and to all our parents, boyfriends, husbands, kids and supporters who have yelled and screamed you are part of our great year.

STATE LEAGUE 5 TEAM REPORT With a new look team from 2003, a blend of experience and youth, we only missed the four by the tip of our fingernails. Maia, our internet scanner, kept us up to date each week on how we were going, what we needed to do, not always achieveable, but certainly gave it a try. Our last game against Cowan saw the team play great hockey and record a good win. At half time the girls were down 1-3 but they threw everything into their last half of hockey for the season to win 4-3 and finish on a high! The main scorers for the team were Maia McShane with 9, Pippa Birss with 5, Sarah-Jayne Collins and Lisa Barnes tipped in 2 goals a piece. The youthful Como girls: Pippa and Lisa in the forward line, Cassie Mair and Felicity Holtzman as backs showed great improvement towards the end of the season. They were playing a lot of hockey with school, Saturday junior and senior competition so we need to be careful we do not run these younger players into the ground. Nicky de Blank in goal had a great season saving us on many occasions, she won the team's "Most Valuable Player", with the defence Gill Cheetham, Jacqui McGuire, Hayley Gardner and Tammie Miller. We are sad to see Rhonda Kaan return to Sydney with her husband Rob's change of job-her presence will be missed. Sarah Carter played six games with us until she fell ill and she is still recovering so we wish her well. We thank the ladies from other teams who filled in during the season. VETERANS 2 TEAM REPORT At the beginning of the hockey season Kay was trying to get someone to help out with the vet’s team, so after a year off I said to Kay that I would contact the names of the girls that was handed to me and I also found a few extras. Hence I got the job as manageress. We had 15 girls’ names on the books. I worked out that two girls would have a break each week but that didn’t happen as girls were either sick or had other commitments. I really didn’t know who was going to turn up until the night. The first round saw us winning all our games and by very big margins. The second round wasn’t as easy with us struggling with some games, including a draw and shock horror a loss!! We finished up as premiers and played Hale in the second semi final winning 3-1. It was a very good game, short passing and everyone encouraging and supporting each other. We then went straight into the grand final against Raiders. We were down 1 nil at half time and I was a little bit worried. A good pep talk saw a huge change in the second half with the forwards moving the ball around which resulted in 4 good goals. Jennifer scored a goal off a great pass from Sue Stoate, Kerry Chapman managed to get one in from off the post. Sue Stoate then put the ball into the net after a raised ball from the defenders. Gloria not to be outdone by her sister also scored a goal. Final score 4-1. The full backs and halves played a solid defence which no one was going to penetrate. Our goalkeeper Sue played very well especially since she wasn’t feeling very well. Viv George played an excellent game she seemed to be everywhere and stopping anything that came her way. I thought overall the team was evenly balanced with some young legs and experienced players. The only constructive comment I would have is that there is 11 players in a team and we must all support and use each other. I would like to thank Liz Hanson for filling the position of goalie when Sue was away. Thank you to all the team members for their support and help throughout the season and hope to see you all again next year Congratulations to Jaks Scott who was the winner of the Most Consistent Player of the year award. Also congratulations to those girls who made the State Veterans Team. Jaks Scott and Wendy Quint 35’s , Sue Stoate 40’s, Jennifer Houghton 45’s, Cheryl Sweeting 50’s, and Joan Birch 55’s. The Tournament is being held in Perth. 8th – 16th October. Come and see some of the games. The Team consisted of: Sue Flint Carolyn Connolly Beth McMiles Lynne McMiles Viv George Cheryl Sweeting Ros Medbury

METRO 1 TEAM REPORT

The Metro 1 team started season 2004 with a lot of rebuilding to do. We lost our captain, center forward and leading goal scorer - and that was just 1 player, Maia - to pursue turf time for SL5. With her went Tammy, our exceptional center-half and my mentor and fabulous fullback, Gill. We also missed Stacey; who gave birth to her second child midway through the season, Holly; whose University commitments and injury restricted her to filling-in for only a couple of games and Amani; who decided not to return to the club this season. This left us with only 5 players from last year’s squad. However with the demise of the M3 team from last season, we picked up some players and the remainder of our team coming from new stock and players returning to the club. We also has a change of coach half way through the season, with Kay Lee stepping down due to the demanding commitments of being SPWHC President, making way for Graeme Simms (from Classic League) to take over. We overcame all the upheaval to post a win against Hale in the first game of the season. Only to find out later that one of the teams in our league (Vic Park) had withdrawn and the first game did not count! Sadly, we were not able to repeat our performance in the round 1 replay, going down 3-1. Hale also flogged us 8-1 signalling the halfway point of the season. This point saw us at 3 wins, 4 losses and a draw to leave us sitting 5th – a very rude shock from last year, when we had dropped only 1 game and were coming 2nd. The second half of the season saw us post a convincing 4-nil win over Freo, giving our goal difference a much-needed boost. After a coaching change and our team beginning perform as a more cohesive unit we reversed the first half trend. Another great win over North Coast Raiders, with a sterling individual performance from Linda scoring 3 of our 5 goals, gave us more confidence in ourselves heading towards the finals. After dropping 2 games to Melville earlier in the season, we finally beat them 5-1 in the last game to finish outright 4th. All this change did give the rest of us a chance to show what we were made of. I was elected captain for the first time in my life (I’m not actually sure if this was because the team though I would make a good one, or I was the only one silly enough to say yes). Anyway they were stuck with me and put-up with my on-field outbursts admirably. Alyssa made the most of the opportunity to take over Maia’s spot as center forward and finished the season as leading goal scorer. Sam Waller was our very deserving Fairest and Best winner, polling votes in almost every game. Although it must be noted, team-wise, that it was a very tight contest with 4 possible winners with only 1 game to go. Sam finished with a great game to win outright and the runner-up was Claire Omodei.

Natalie Jones was awarded the most improved player, considering she had never picked up a hockey stick until this year. Special mention must also go to our VERY DEDICATED Goalie, Tara, who spent most of the season driving up from Lake King which is approximately a 1000km round trip! I must make note of the umpiring standards this season as they left a lot to be desired. There were even a few games in which no umpires turned up and I believe this was the case across the M1 league. While we all understand how daunting/inconvenient it can be to umpire, it is disappointing to see that commitments are not take seriously for the lower grades. Despite everything we got on fabulously as a team, with the majority of us making it back to the club for a drink after every game – even the losses. We were really proud of our performances, with all our training finally paying off much to the coach’s delight. METRO 2 TEAM REPORT

Well as usual we had a great season, we managed to play in the Grand Final but were beaten by a very determined Eastern Blades team, the weather was atrocious and Blades came out firing. But the Metro 2 team are not just out there to win, we come together as a group every year to socialise with great friends and run around and play the sport we love. We have been together for a long time and over the years have welcomed new people into our team. This year we welcomed Cathy Hewitt as a fabulous fullback, Cathy brought a bit of fun into the team and we all enjoyed her little giggle if she missed the ball or missed a tackle. Thanks Cathy for joining us. Louise Houghton played a few games for us and I think in one of those games got 80% of the votes for that game, thanks Louise for helping us out. I have no doubt that we will all be back next year, a little older a little slower but…..a little wiser, so bring it on you young girls!!! Report composed by Noelleen Gardner Captain BB

SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT The 2004 Social Committee was formed about a third of the way through the season. It started as a group organising a quiz night fundraiser, which then just snowballed into a committee. The committee was formed in partnership with WASPS and with the aim of developing a deeper social connection between the two clubs. The functions coordinated by the committee were: Quiz Night This was a highly successful night due to the fantastic support of club members who attended and those that supplied some of the numerous prizes. The event required a lot of preplanning and the committee recommends that another not be held until at least 2006. Theme Night – James Bond This was unfortunately not a very successful night. Poor attendance was the issue, with only about 40 people attending. The committee was disappointed with the effort of club members, but also realised that perhaps this style of event is not a popular as it used to be. Suggestions were made to either change to no theme or a very simple theme such as a beach party. The committee would still like to see this type of event were it is about socialising and not making money. Annual Dinner The joint Annual Dinner held at The Charthouse Restaurant was a big success. Numbers well exceeded the expectations of the committee. We believe the success of the night was due to the low cost and location. The format of the night was felt to be successful with all speeches/presentations prior to the serving of the main meal. Thanks to Ash Kelly for hosting the night. Overall the committee was pleased with the efforts made over the season. Of course it would have been better to start prior to the season rather than part way through. The partnership with WASPS was a positive initiative and the committee thinks that this is important to foster in the future. SPWHC Committee Members Maia McShane, Anthea Bird,
