On Saturday, the Gusties will take on defending national runner-up and current No. 2 Elmira College at 4 p.m., and Sunday, will face defending national champion and current No. 1 Plattsburgh State University at 1 p.m. Gustavus is most recently coming off a tie and win against Augsburg in a home-home series this past weekend. In Friday’s game in Minneapolis, the Gusties skated to a 2-2 tie with the Auggies, with Allison Eder-Zdechlik (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) scoring shorthanded for Gustavus in the first period, and Laura Johnson (So., Chanhassen, Minn.) scoring her first goal of the season in her first game of the season in the third. The Auggies tallied two goals of their own, however, and after regulation and an overtime period, the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Saturday’s game was a different story, as Eder-Zdechlik led Gustavus to a 4-1 win by notching the Gusties’ second hat trick of the season with an even, shorthanded, and empty net goal. The senior forward now leads the team and MIAC in goals and points and is tied for second in the nation in goals scored of players who have only played six games. Meanwhile, Elmira faced a stern test this past weekend when it faced a red-hot Utica College team that was off to a 5-0-1 start to the season. The Soaring Eagles rookies dominated the headlines in the opener of the two-game set at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena on Saturday. Three Elmira first-years tallied goals, with Katie Granato and Shannon Strawinski scoring 1:18 apart to break open a 1-1 game. In Sunday’s return trip to Utica, second-year forward Meghan Fonfara ‘18 stole the show. Trailing for the majority of the game, Fonfara keyed a late Elmira rally, scoring twice in the final 5:02 to stun the Pioneers 2-1. The Elma, NY, native tapped in the go-ahead goal with 1:04 remaining to send the second-ranked Soaring Eagles to a 4-0-0 start to ECAC West play. Plattsburgh State is most recently coming off a 4-0 victory over then-No. 10 Castleton University in Plattsburgh. Despite outshooting the Spartans 21-7 in the first period, Plattsburgh didn’t manage to find the net until the 13:40 mark in the second, and broke the game open with a shorthanded goal just minutes into the third to take a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals proceeded to add two additional goals to remain a perfect 7-0-0 on the season. Series Snapshot: Gustavus has met Elmira three times prior to this weekend, with the Soaring Eagles notching victories in all three meetings. National Championship runs in 2012-13 and 2001-02. The other meeting came in the third-place game during the 2009-10 campaign.

The Gusties have matched up with Plattsburgh State five times an notched a 1-3-1 record against the Cardinals all-time. The last time the two teams met was in last season’s Cardinal Classic, where Gustavus found itself in a 4-1 hole with 10 minutes remaining in the game. However, goals from Emily Reibert, Katy Fuller, and Carolyn Draayer ‘15 allowed the Gusties to tie the game at 4-4 and send it into overtime. There, Plattsburgh State held a 3-0 shot advantage, but couldn’t put one home and the game ended in a 4-4 draw.

About The Soaring Eagles: Elmira has gotten off to a fast start in 2015-16, as it boasts a 5-1-0 record and the No. 2 ranking in the most recent USCHO.com poll. The Soaring Eagles’ only loss came in its season opener against then-No. 6 Adrian College in which it dropped a 4-1 decision. Since, Elmira has won five straight and outscored its opponents 22-5. Meghan Fonfara leads the team with seven goals and nine points, while Kelcey Crawford has seen the most time between the posts, as she owns a 3-1-0 record and 1.72 goals against average on the season.

About The Cardinals: Plattsburgh State is the two-time defending NCAA Division III National Champion, and hasn’t missed a beat this season with an unblemished 7-0-0 record to begin the year and the No. 1 ranking in the USCHO.com poll. In its past three games, Plattsburgh State has outscored opponents 16-0, and over the course of the season has only allowed four goals. Kayla Meneghin leads the team with 17 total points off eight goals and nine assists, while Camille Leonard has worked a majority of the minutes between the posts and earned a 6-0-0 record and 0.18 goals against average.

(Another) Hat Trick Hero: After going nearly two years without one, the Gustavus women’s hockey team has now tallied two hat tricks in two weekends, as Allison Eder-Zdechlik most recently accomplished the feat on Saturday in a 4-1 win over Augsburg. Diana Draayer also notched a three-goal effort two weekends ago in a 6-4 victory over the University of St. Thomas. Eder-Zdechlik and Draayer became the first Gustie women’s hockey players to notch a hat tricks since Lindsey Hjelm had one on January 26, 2013 in a 4-1 victory over Concordia College.

Shorthanded Studs: Along with hat tricks, Gustavus has also been particularly effective on the penalty kill over the past two weeks, as Eder-Zdechlik notched two this past weekend against Augsburg and Draayer tallied one in her hat trick effort against the Tommies. The pair are the first Gusties to score a shorthanded goals since Diana’s sister Carolyn did so last season in a 5-2 win over the St. Thomas on Feb. 13.

Eder-Zdechlik Named To D3hockey.com National Team of the Week: Following her impressive weekend against Augsburg, Eder-Zdechlik was named to the D3hockey.com National Team of the Week as a first-team selection. EZ was one of just six players from around the nation to be selected to the first team.

Two Of The Best Behind The Bench: Gustavus’s game with Plattsburgh will feature two of the most esteemed coaches in Division III women’s hockey. Gustie coach Mike Carroll has compiled an overall record of 353-84-29 in his 15+ seasons with the team, while Cardinal coach Kevin Houle owns a record of 293-42-22 in 11+ seasons with his squad.

Gustavus Embarks On 19th Season Of Women’s Hockey: The Gustavus women’s hockey team is currently in its 19th season. Founded in 1997, the Gusties have attained an all-time record of 389-103-30, which stands as the second winningest program in all of NCAA Division III women’s hockey. The Gustie women have won 13 MIAC titles in the 18 years of women’s hockey in the conference. Those 14 titles rank first in front of St. Thomas (3), and Augsburg and Saint Mary’s, who each have two. Gustavus has also earned the MIAC Playoff crown a total of 11 times, 10 of which have come in the past 12 years and led to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Wearing The “C”: In the 18-year history of the Gustavus women’s hockey program, 35 players have earned the honor of being a captain. This year, two new players earn that title in junior Allie Lewis and sophomore Diana Draayer.

Home Grown Talent: Of the 23 players on this year’s roster, 20 are natives of Minnesota. The only players who reside outside the State of Hockey are Courtney Bethune, who hails from Fort Frances, Ontario, Allie Lewis, who is a native of Kearney, Nebraska, and Amanda DiNella from Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois.

Scorers Return: Despite losing two of its top four scorers from its 2014-15 squad, Gustavus will return 62 percent of its scoring from last season, including sophomore Erica Power who led last year’s squad with 27 points (9G, 18A) and Allison Eder-Zdechlik who finished tied for second on the team with 20 points (9G, 11A).

A Balanced Approach: Thirteen of the Gusties’ 23 players in 2015-16 are returners, and the Gusties also welcome back three of their five All-MIAC selections. However, the Gusties also welcome in 10 first-years, including five forwards, three defenders, and two goalies.

Gusties In The Polls: Gustavus is ranked ninth in the most recent USCHO.com Division III Women’s Hockey Poll, which was released Monday. This week marks the 95th consecutive time that the Gusties have been ranked in the USCHO.com poll.
