Commodore’s Comments Happy New Year everyone,

First off, I would like to thank everyone from the previous board for all their dedi-

cation to the club. John Haag, Mike Gengler Jr, Jan Ruggles, Betsy Reifschneider,

Bob Jepson, Katy Steinhaus. Many of these members have been in a position of

responsibility within the organization for many years and they all deserve our re-

spect and gratitude. That being said, if you look at that group of names you will

realize we have had an unusually large change in the board this year, while some of

the new members have been on the board in the past, many of them have not.

I would like to say that I believe we have a great new group and I look forward to

working with each and every one of them.

Luckily, many of our past committee chairs have offered to stay on for another

year. Randy will be staying on as Harbor and Docks, Harry Brunette will be staying

on as Grounds, John Erickson will be staying on as House Maintenance, Tom

Schulz will remain as Planning, the list goes on and on. I would like to thank all

committee chairs for all of their hard work. Members will see the complete list of

Committee chairs in the High Tide and web very soon.

On a separate note I have one highlight. Paul is staying on a Bar Manager, Publish-

ing High Tide and is picking up the web site. Somebody please help this man. Also

remember, if you have anything fun for the High Tide lets him know and he will

get it in.

One change to note is that the Hall and Entertainment will be handled as a commit-

tee. I would like to thank Tara Billingsley, Cheryl Rybka and Kris Herington for

taking on this responsibility. I believe they will do a great job and I would appreci-

ate if all members would help them in any way possible. Lastly I would also like to

thank Mary Jo Haag for her many years of hard work, not only as the Hall manager

but for also giving the club the face lift that it desperately needed. I hear comple-

ments from other clubs on a regular basis.

After learning more of the ins and outs of the club it is amazing how much support we have to suc-

ceed. If it’s not John John and Buss fixing the security system on a short notice, It’s Bill doing some

touch up painting while he is down taking the flags in to be replaced on his way to get a replacement

aerator, the Ciurlik’s noticing issues in the harbor when they are going out of their way to stock sup-

plies. Everyone should always remember that many members volunteer behind the scenes to make

the club what it is. Each one of them deserves a hand.

Now to talk brass tacks. After taking on this new responsibility, I have spent quite a few hours at the

club in the last few weeks. I’ve met with a lot of members and discussed a lot of concerns. To be

honest I was a bit overwhelmed by it all and was trying to get a grasp on everything. Well, one day

last week I was in the office, cleaning out my old mail box and trying to freshen up the membership

data base. As I looked over at the clean box, out of the blue a ray of light shined down on me. I

couldn’t believe it. Right in the basement…. What just happened, well it had just accrued to me is

that some other poor soul is now our Fleet Captain. Oh, by the way, have I told you yet? We have a

new fleet captain. It was like a gigantic burden lifted off of my shoulders….. All kidding aside, I

have very much enjoyed my time as the Fleet Captain and it was very rewarding working with the

lift crew. It was a great opportunity to work with each and every one of them. It is also the way that I

met many of you that are reading this now. To come to a close with this chapter in my life, I also

look forward to working with Mike Herington, “the other poor soul” / “sucker”, that is our new fleet

captain. Thank you, Mike.

Lastly I would like to thank the members of South Shore Yacht Club for stopping in to see us New

Year’s Day. We appreciate your support, I for one had a great time.

I am looking forward to great things to come and with full club involvement we can overcome any-

thing.

See you at the club,

Bryan Gahan SMYC Commodore (c) 906-369-4098 (e) [email protected]

Attention all members new and old

The 2018 boating season will soon be upon us and the club events are

already being scheduled on the calendar.

Putting together a club event is a great way to get some hours in.

If there are any members that are interested in running an event, or have

an idea for a new event, please let a board or committee member know.

Please remember that large club events do not need to be handled all by

yourself.

The club has been doing this for a long time, and there is no lack of

knowledge or experience among the members when it comes to running

an event.

A committee can be assembled for large events, to help with making it

run smoothly without a lot of stress.
