Robbie Helps Pupils To Paws To ReadVisitors to Carnegie library may besurprised to meet our new helper, Robbiethe Border Collie. Robbie will be helpingpupils from local primary schools to gainmore confidence in reading. Provided by Canine Concern Scotland,Robbie is trained to encourage youngreaders who lack confidence with readingto come along to regular sessions where, instead of reading to a person, they havethe opportunity to read to Robbie.

Research shows that reading to an animal or a stuffed toy helpschildren to relax, gain confidence in their own ability and improvetheir enjoyment in reading. The children taking part will be given their own small toy colliepuppy which they can name, and continue to read to, when theygo back to class.

The Final Straw For Single Use Plastics

SOUTH AYRSHIRE COUNCIL 18 OCTOBER 2018

To find out more

about the ecoschools programme

The Council is proud to take a standagainst single use plastics and has signedup to the Final Straw Campaign. Our first priority will be to stop the useof plastic straws across all our services, but we have ambitious plans to cut othersingle use plastics such as bottles, cutlery, bags, coffee cups, lids andballoons over the next four years.

Our pupils are already leading the way, with 62 schools registered withthe Eco-Schools Programme. This is an internationally recognised awardscheme which aims to make environmental awareness and action centralto the ethos of schools. Pupils who took part in our holiday programme found some creative waysto recycle their rubbish. Children at Barassie and Cairn Primary schoolscollected their empty bottles to use as plant and vegetable feeders at localallotments. In Girvan, children helped Glendoune Community Associationturn the bottom of empty bottles into poppies which will be displayed tocommemorate the centenary of the end of World War I.

"The children are fully behind our commitment toreduce single use plastics and they are already fillingup their reusable water bottles inside and outside ofschool. We're an Eco School so there's already goodawareness about protecting the environment but we

are always keen to do more to safeguard the planet forthe children and future generations."
